Massmarketing frauds use the internet, email, mass mailings, personal phone calls, texting, television, radio, and all forms of social networking to rip you off. Overpayment Fraud, also known as Cash Back Fraud, usually starts when you advertise something for saleoften on a free online classified site. The criminal sends you a cheque, money order or bank draft. The sum is much larger than your asking price, and you are asked to wire transfer the difference. Since cheques take longer to clear than electronic bank transfers, the money leaves your account before the cheque is confirmed as counterfeit or forged. With the Canadian Premiere of his award-winning documentary DREAM, local Paraglider Pilot, Benjamin Jordan hopes to inspire members of West Kootenay communities to realize their own dreams while raising upwards of $4000 for an east shore nature camp to help children from low-income Kootenay homes realize theirs. The film documents the 108 consecutive flights that it took to live out his dream of paragliding across Canada, the interactions with inspired children at schools and summer camps and a stunning low flying aerial perspective of this awesome country. The film will be shown on Friday, March 25, 7:30 pm at The Capitol Theatre (421 Victoria Street at Ward Street) in Nelson. Having grown up in a low-income Toronto home, Jordan now recognizes that the charity camps he attended during his youth were solely responsible for his passion for nature and community today. Jordan is committing 100% of the proceeds generated from ticket and DVD sales to Tipi Camp, a remote access nature camp on the East Shore which focuses on Wilderness Immersion for Self Esteem. Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26 annually, people in countries around the world are invited to wear purple and host events in support of epilepsy awareness. Salmo is home to two community members that are ambassadors of “Purple.� We have been touched by this disorder as mothers of young children that have been recently diagnosed with epilepsy. The Salmo Valley Youth and Community Centre (206 Seventh Street) will be hosting a perogie luncheon combined with an information table and other fun activities, on Saturday, March 26 between 11 am and 2 pm. This event promises to be fun and informative. We encourage all community members to attend and show their support. Proceeds from the event will be forwarded to The Center for Epilepsy and Seizure Education in British Columbia. We feel passionate that with education and awareness we will attract greater interest in research, which in turn will only benefit the interventions used to assist those living with epilepsy. When embarking on the project, Bockner was struck by the divide between the youth of today and their elders. As a young man himself, he feels that this may be in part because of the role that technology plays in our lives, an advancement that has widened the gap between the generations. Bockner’s impressive talent, inquiring gaze and sense of compassion bring out the deep knowledge and vivacious spark common to the individuals in his portraits. His words will also be on display in the form of poems, which accompany the portraits. The words similarly convey the awe and gratitude he feels for the wisdom imparted to him by these elderly individuals as they shared with him their stories and advice. The opening reception will be on Saturday, March 26 from 7-9 pm at the Langham. HOOKED: Forum Theatre Project For Women Hooked: A forum theatre project for women invites any women who have experience with addiction (past or present, in their own lives or lives close to them), to take part in this exciting six-week project starting April 2011. In this project women will work together on issues that relate to all of us. What will participants get out of it? Every woman participating in this project will receive lunch each week, free childcare (if needed), a close group of friends, and lots of fun and learning. Everyone who completes the project will receive an honorarium What is forum theatre? It consists of a set of games, exercises and practices that create a safe space for people to name their reality, identify the contradictions, dialogue through theatre, and to try out different solutions. It uses movement, storytelling and tableaux to explore how images of one’s personal experience reflect universal issues of power and social transformation. The final result is short scenes that are collectively created by drawing on participants’ life experience in order to engage in discussion of issues. We will create plays collectively about the issues that have come up throughout the sessions and have the chance to perform them in the community. The six week project will take place on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm, starting April 30 in downtown Nelson. We have a chance to perform publicly on June 11. We want to explore the social and personal reasons for addictions as well as the social stigma and discrimination around those with addiction issues. By exploring these issues as a community we can make change and create more safety and support. No. First, we have been very successful in finding homes for all our animals. But if the adoption takes longer than expected or wanted, we will move the pet to another foster home. We are a no-kill organization.

Isn’t it too hard to let go of the pet? While it’s always difficult to say goodbye to a friend, it is much easier if you are happy with the pet’s new home. KAAP involves you in the adoption process, and you feel good about your foster pet’s future.

What will it cost me? Only your precious non-renewable resource – your time. KAAP provides all the supplies for the pet. Anything you wish to donate will receive a tax receipt, as we are a registered charity.

What qualifications do I need? A big heart, a home (or permission from your landlord to foster pets), a love and patience for animals, and time to spend with them. Let us know if you have any special skills or experience with animals, their training, or medical care.

What if I need help? Call a KAAP volunteer any time to discuss any concerns.
