Cardiac Arrest vs. Heart Attack Many people mistakenly assume cardiac arrest and heart attack are the same thing. However, sudden cardiac arrest is not a heart attack. In fact, there are distinguishable differences between the two that are best explained by detailing what is actually happening when someone is suffering from either one. What happens during a heart attack? During a heart attack, blockage occurs in one or more of the heart’s arteries. That blockage subsequently prevents the heart from receiving enough oxygen-rich blood. Research indicates that many people with symptoms of a heart attack actually delay seeking treatment for more than two hours. In a 2010 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers found the average delay in arriving
at the hospital after the start of a heart attack was roughly two and a half hours. Eleven percent of the more than 100,000 cases examined in the study waited more than 12 hours from the start of symptoms before seeking treatment. Those symptoms can include chest discomfort, shortness of breath and discomfort in other areas of the body that do no improve after five minutes. What happens during cardiac arrest? When a person is experiencing cardiac arrest, their heart’s electrical system is malfunctioning and suddenly becomes irregular. The heart begins to beat very fast while the ventricles may flutter or quiver. Blood is not being delivered to the body during cardiac arrest, and a genuine fear is that blood flow to the brain will be reduced so drastically that a person may lose consciousness. cont’d on pg 6

from pg 5 Unlike a heart attack, cardiac arrest requires immediate treatment. It’s best to seek treatment promptly for both a heart attack and cardiac arrest, but those experiencing cardiac arrest are at much greater risk of death if treatment is not sought immediately. Men and women, young and old, should also keep in mind that heart attack can sometimes lead into cardiac arrest, highlighting the importance of seeking treatment as soon as any symptoms of heart attack begin to appear. How are heart attack and cardiac arrest prevented? The goal is to keep blood flowing through the body as smoothly as possible. This means avoiding blood clots and the build-up of plaque in the arteries. That might sound simple enough, but plaque build-up and the process of coronary artery disease has been shown to begin as far back as childhood, when diets are not typically tailored to avoid heart disease. While it’s impossible to go back in time and change certain lifestyle habits, including diet and exercise routines and regimens, there are ways adults can reduce the buildup of plaque, which can help them avoid falling victim to heart attack and cardiac arrest. • Exercise regularly. At least 30 minutes of daily exercise is recommended. • Eat a healthy diet. A diet low in saturated fat, which almost always equates to eating less red meat, and high in fruits and vegetables is ideal. • Stop smoking. For those who have never smoked or have quit smoking, keep it up. Those who have or continue to smoke, stop.

Today’s Frauds More Complex, More Convincing Than Ever
Operating a scam used to be like casting a net – con-artists mailed lots of letters or made lots of phone calls hoping to catch a few “fish.” Those scams usually offered an unbelievable, life-altering deal and used a personal touch to convince victims the offer was legitimate. Since people weren’t used to this type of approach, many believed they really had hit the jackpot and therefore fell for the scam. While education and awareness programs were successful in helping the public detect those early scams, the sheer volume of pitches also helped raise awareness. Eventually, so many of us had received a letter from a Nigerian prince hoping to share his millions that we began recognizing those letters as scams. Today, the internet and email messaging allow scammers to cast a huge net over countless victims from a convenient distance. At the push of a button, they can reach so many people that the odds of success are stacked in their favour. As the public has grown wary, scams have grown more sophisticated. To reel in new victims, scammers have modified their “bait” by improving their pitches, hiding their true locations by “spoofing” their telephone numbers or by using post office boxes located in the victims’ countries. Today’s mass marketing frauds are well planned, fully-scripted operations that have the resources to hire professional web designers and computer hackers. They buy television commercials and magazine and newspaper ads to lend an air of legitimacy to their scams. With organized crime groups becoming more heavily involved in fraud, there’s also been an marked increase in threats and strong-arm pressure tactics used to intimidate victims into either sending money or not reporting scams. Fraudsters have improved their techniques, constructing scams so sophisticated they can fool even the most seasoned skeptic. That said, knowing what to watch for still means you’ll be less likely to fall victim. Lottery and prize scams When lottery scams began, prospective victims received email messages telling them they’d won, even though they didn’t know the lottery and had never bought a ticket. Today’s lottery scammers go so far as to send victims counterfeit cheques in the mail to “pay administration fees, taxes or duties”. To provide a reason why they’re contacting you about a lottery you never entered, they sometimes pose as marketers for legitimate companies such as Costco or Walmart. Tactics like these lend authenticity to scams and increase the chances of fooling you. If you’ve been notified of prize winnings by phone, email or regular mail, remember that legitimate lotteries definitely DO NOT: • Require up-front payment for taxes, duties or fees so you can collect your prize. • Pressure you into making a quick decision. • Discourage you from verifying information about the lottery. • Hide where they are located. • Notify winners by e-mail. • Use free email accounts (Yahoo, Hotmail, G-mail, etc) to communicate with winners. • Instruct you to call mobile phone numbers or keep your winnings secret. Romance scams Fraud artists know that lonely people are often easy prey. Romance scams used to use newspaper and magazine ads to
reach prospective victims. Today, scammers troll dating sites, chat rooms and blogs looking for targets. Some romance scammers even manage to convince their victims to travel great distances. Upon arriving, the victim is kidnapped and held for ransom. When considering companionship offers in email messages, letters or on websites, be especially wary: • Never provide personal data online to someone you don’t know. • Guard your privacy – don’t provide your date of birth or address. • Watch out for ads that include model-like photographs. If they aren’t blatant misrepresentations, the handsome man or gorgeous woman in the photo may in fact be a scheming, ruthless thief hoping to use your trust and kindness to separate you from your money. • Once you share a digital photo online, it’s no longer in your control and can be used for purposes you didn’t intend. • Search a prospective companion’s name and details using your favorite browser. You may be surprised what you find. If they’ve scammed others, chances are someone has posted a message online. If you’re really interested in someone, consider a professional background check to verify his or her identity. • Don’t meet your online companion alone – always bring a friend or let others know where you’re going and when. • Remember, online relationships can be exciting and attractive because they give you a chance to present yourself in a whole new light. But your prospective mate may also turn out to be someone else, much to your surprise and disappointment. Credit and debit card scams If you own a debit or credit card, you’re at risk of being scammed, either in person or while seated at your computer. Phishing emails are one of the most common methods scammers use to get your cards’ information. These emails usually look like they come from your bank or financial institution and they invariably ask you to verify your debit card or other banking information. Another online feature to watch for is the internet “pop-up” ad. Scammers often use them to trick you into signing up for memberships that charge monthly fees. No matter how careful you are with your personal information on-line, beware of skimming, the act of copying your debit or credit card’s information using an electronic reader often attached to an ATM machine or point-of-sale terminal. Protect your cards by: • Ensuring you have a new chip-and-PIN debit or credit card. • Always shielding your PIN when entering it. Don’t be embarrassed – you’re not insulting anyone. • Using online authentication security like “Verified by Visa” or “MasterCard SecureCode” • Verifying your purchases regularly online or on your monthly statement. • Not letting your cards out of your sight when making purchases. When it comes to scams, simple or sophisticated, being aware is still the best way to stay safe. Talk to your friends and family members about their scam experiences and read newspaper, magazine and internet articles explaining today’s scams. For advice on protecting yourself from the most commonly-reported scams, please visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s new website: www.antifraudcentre.ca Pennywise

For someone suffering from COPD, breathing is all that matters. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory disease where the breathing tubes (airways) into the lungs become swollen and partially blocked, making breathing difficult. It is characterized by shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, mucus production and fatigue. It is a long-term disease that gets worse over time. COPD also includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis; it affects 750,000 Canadians and is on the rise here and around the world. Here in Nelson, COPD ranks number three in the list of most common diseases in the community, ahead of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Combined with asthma (ranked number two), these two respiratory diseases have an incidence rate of over thirteen percent.
That’s over 3,300 people affected by asthma and COPD in our local health area alone. Starting in January, there will be a lot more information available to persons diagnosed with either disease. Breathing Matters for Asthma and COPD is a new program being offered in Nelson. Participants will attend four ninety minute sessions where they will learn valuable information for managing their disease including education, smoking cessation (smoking causes 80 to 90 percent of COPD cases), medication advice, breathing exercises, and other health improvement measures. After completion of the program, participants can continue with monthly support meetings in conjunction with the BC Lung Association and a weekly exercise class. Classes will be held at the Community First Health Co-op and are starting Wednesday, January 12. For more information, please contact Jessica at 250-551-9640.

Selkirk College TRIUMFs In Physics Research Selkirk College has joined forces with TRIUMF--a consortium of 15 universities in Canada whose purpose is to conduct world-class experimental research in subatomic physics and nuclear medicine and to commercialize its spin-off technologies. Housed at University of British Columbia’s campus in Vancouver, TRIUMF is one of the world’s leading subatomic physics laboratories. It has partnerships and collaborations with researchers from across Canada and around the world. It usually costs thousands of dollars and about 2 years of advanced planning to book an experiment in TRIUMF’s research facility. One of their latest developments, a new form of superconducting linear accelerator (linac), is budgeted at about $60 million. Selkirk is the first college in Canada to work with TRIUMF through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). “I believe that this partnership could have significant programming implications for Selkirk, and major commercialization and economic benefits for the region,” says Dean of University Arts and Sciences, Neil Coburn. The reason that Selkirk College was “chosen” to become a partner goes back to the history of master-mind Morgan Dehnel. Dehnel completed a PhD in accelerator physics at TRIUMF/UBC, and returned to his roots in Nelson to set up his business “D-Pace” along with his two brothers Kent and Kurt Dehnel. D-Pace has licensed about 10 technologies from TRIUMF and commercialized 3 of them to date. Its most prominent product is a negative hydrogen ion source for cyclotrons, a type of particle accelerator used to produce radioisotope tracers for diagnosing cancerous tumors. DPace was recognized as a Canadian Innovation leader by the federal government earlier this year. The company has contracts to build and further develop ion sources for research/production facilities around the world. Morgan is currently in France for a few months to co-ordinate a 5-year supply deal recently signed with a European accelerator manufacturer. D-Pace’s most recent sale is to Fermilab in the USA. Morgan would like to work with Selkirk College to possibly commercialize more of the technologies D-Pace has licensed. Part of TRIUMF’s mandate is to transfer technology to the market place for the social and economic benefit of Canadians. Because of the Dehnels’ success in commercializing TRIUMF technology and creating a Canadian company (in a small, rural community) that is successful in the world market, TRIUMF is interested in a partnership with Selkirk College that would support these activities. “This is a great opportunity for TRIUMF to connect world-class training and opportunities with the highly talented students and faculty at Selkirk,” says Head of Strategic Planning and Communications at TRIUMF Tim Meyer. For more information about research and innovation activities at Selkirk College please visit www.selkirk.ca/ research.

Take A “CHILI Dip In The Lake
Chilly is a relative term. Chili isn’t. The first depends on your metabolism, attire, and attitude. The second is what’s waiting for you at this year’s Polar Bear Dip. The Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation is sure that attitude is the most important element and that the warm Chili that awaits will more than make up for the rest. The Hospital Foundation welcomes all of Nelson’s swimmers and floaters, young and not so young, to take the plunge for health, personal pride, and appropriately, to raise money to purchase essential Emergency Ward equipment. The quick dip into Kootenay Lake starts at noon on Saturday, January 1 at Lakeside Park, and will be preceded by a hot chili lunch, which can be purchased by donation, at 11:30 am. While the foundation gladly provides the warm snack, in turn, they welcome the environmentally conscious. Please feel free to bring your favorite washable bowl, mug, and spoon. Pledge forms for the Polar Bear Dip can be found at the front desk of Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, as well as at www. klhf.org. Donations will also be accepted at the hospital and at Lakeside Park during the event. Start the New Year with gusto. Bring your supporters. Make them pay.
The Health and Safety Risks Of Holiday Practices Blazing fireplaces, a dry evergreen tree, faulty ornamental lights, unsafe sleepwear designs and candles left unattended can all pose fire hazards. Toys inappropriate to a child’s age or those that contain small, loose parts and packaging materials can all prove harmful to young children. They can choke on small parts, suffocate in packaging materials or be seriously injured if a toy is not suited to their age. Minimizing Your Risk Here are some tips to help you enjoy a safe and happy holiday. Toys and gifts • Choose toys that are appropriate to the child’s age. Be sure to read and follow all warnings and instructions that come with the toy. • Toys with small loose parts can be dangerous for children under three years of age. Keep them out of reach. • Make sure batteries in toys are properly installed and not accessible to the child. Do not let children take battery-operated toys to bed.

• Dispose of all packing materials such as Styrofoam pellets, ties, plastic bags and wrapping as soon as possible. Children can choke or suffocate on them. For fire safety, when buying sleepwear for children, be sure to choose items made of nylon, polyester, or snug-fitting cotton or cotton blend fabrics.
Candles • Never leave burning candles unattended. • Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and away from pets, tree decorations or wrapping paper. • Cut candle wicks short to prevent a high flame. • If candles are used in a centerpiece, make sure they don’t burn low enough to ignite the decorations. • Use sturdy candle holders that won’t easily tip over. Holiday trees • When buying a real tree, check that it is fresh (needles are hard to pull off ). Water the tree daily. Trees can consume up to four litres of water a day. Store the tree in a cool, sheltered area until it is brought indoors for decorating. If it will be several days before it is brought indoors, store it outdoors or on a cool porch or patio. Protect the tree from wind and sun to help it retain its moisture. • Make sure the tree is well-secured in a sturdy stand. • Place the tree away from high traffic areas, doorways, heating vents, radiators, stoves, fireplaces and burning candles. • Keep metal tree ornaments and decorations away from young children. Metal decorations may contain lead that can be harmful to young children if they put them in their mouths. • If young children are around, avoid decorations that are sharp, breakable or have small removable parts, or put those decorations at the top of the tree. • Remove the tree right after the holidays or as soon as the needles start to fall. Dispose of it according to local regulations. Many municipalities have tree-recycling programs. Holiday lights • When decorating your home, only use lights that have been certified by a recognized organization - CSA, ULC or cUL. • Make sure you use indoor lights inside your home and outdoor lights outside. • Check all light bulbs before you put them up and replace broken or burned-out bulbs with those recommended by the manufacturer. • Check the light strings and extension cords you use, discarding any that are frayed or have exposed wires, loose connections or broken light sockets. Never run electrical cords through doorways or under carpets. • Do not overload electrical outlets. Use more than one outlet if the wattage of your lights is more than the outlet can handle. • Keep bubbling lights away from children. They contain a hazardous chemical which can cause irritation or chemical burns if the bulb breaks and the chemical is released. • Turn off all holiday lights before you go to bed or leave your home. Fireplaces and wood stoves • Always use a secure screen in front of your fireplace. • Have the chimney cleaned at least once a year. • Burn hardwood which will leave less creosote in the chimney. • If using firelogs, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use only one log at a time. • Make sure the fire is out before going to bed or before going out. • Ensure that the chimney is drawing well so that wood smoke does not come into the room. • Keep children away from gas fireplaces. When in use, the glass doors can become hot enough to cause serious burns. - Health Canada

Watch Out For Those S.O.B.S (Seniors On Bikes And Skis)
contact either Don Munro (project organizer) at 250-2267855 or Slocan Valley Recreation 250-226-0008. For those needing a little bit of help getting started, Slocan Valley Recreation will be hosting a ski/training day on Monday, January 10 beginning at 10 am, meeting at the Slocan Park Hall. Everyone will be going out and enjoying a ski along the Slocan Valley Rail Trail. After that, skis must be pre-booked for use. A limited number of skis are available, so please let us know if you want to use them. In the months ahead, the group will be providing several bicycles (including a four-wheel bike), some of which will have electric assist, to help seniors reach a little farther. These too, will have to be pre-booked and it’s expected they will be popular. The Kootenay Slocan Lions are working with the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society on this project, and the Slocan Valley Rail Trail is the primary location that all equipment will be used on.
The Kootenay Slocan Lions Club have recently received a grant through the Government of Canada, New Horizons for Seniors Program to keep seniors (55+) active. The purpose of the Seniors on Bikes and Skis (SOB’s) is to allow seniors to pursue some healthy outdoor activities enjoying the Slocan Valley in all seasons. It will also give senior novice skiers the opportunity to try out an activity before deciding on whether they want to commit to purchasing their own equipment. The Lions have used the funds to purchase a variety of cross country ski packages and bicycles (including electric assist) and will be making them available to seniors in the Slocan Valley in the months ahead. Starting in January, the ski equipment will be available to seniors throughout the valley. To access the equipment
Employment Wanted CLASS 1 WITH LOGGING EXPERIENCE: Available for snow removal, equipment operation and driving. Matt 250-368-6687.
Feliz Navidad! My name is Rosie and this is my sister Sophie. I’m the outgoing one with a bit of white on my chest. Sophie is the nice shy one who is all black and has polydactyl toes. This does seem to enable her to catch more flies than me, darn it all. Talk about an unfair advantage! Anyway, fun sister rivalry aside, we really love and depend on one another and we do need to find a home together. We are both about 5 years old and have spent our whole lives together. We’d like to go to a nice, calm stable household that isn’t too noisy or chaotic. Now don’t get me wrong, we’re not ready to settle down into retirement yet, we’re still incredibly playful and love chasing each other around; but the house we came from had a lot of kids and other animals and it was sometimes just a bit too much for Sophie especially, but sometimes even me. Even though my previous owner’s did nickname me “Nosy Rosie” because of my bold, inquisitive nature; but I am very protective of Sophie and what she wants, she gets. Sisters – gotta love ‘em!

Or depending on your preferences, the shelter has a few different pairs of animals that need to be adopted together. There are a few sets of brothers and even a mother/daughter pair similar to us. Most of us are cats, but there is a brother/ sister hound dog pair that need to be adopted together. So if you think your family has enough resources and love to handle bringing a couple of new additions into your home, come on down to the shelter to meet some of us and learn more from the shelter staff. Or have a look online and see if you can’t figure out who the pairs are. As for Sophie and I, our Pet ID #’s are 220780 and 220782 and from all of us at the shelter we are wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS! • Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What details would you want to know about an item you were interested in buying? • Include the brand name (manufacturers spend millions promoting the name and enhancing the image of their products, so take advantage of it). Would you rather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire? • List the item’s best features and what makes your item different from others in the same category. (Remember, the more you tell, the clearer picture a potential buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.) • Take time to research pricing for your article so that you price it reasonably (overpriced items may not receive calls). • Include your phone number and the best times to call. • Ask for the sale...one gentleman put “BUY THIS CAR!â€? in his ad and was pleasantly surprised by the response to his ad!

Bukowski Benefit For African Grandmothers
The Bukowski-Fay family has generously donated their talents and time to support African Grandmothers raising their AIDS-orphaned grandchildren. Kaslo is in for a treat just before the Bukowski’s depart for Edinburgh, with music by Eli Bukowski, Tenise Trueman and Maggie Pearson. In addition, Arin Fay and Brent Bukowski are donating some of their art work for a silent auction, and Morgan Bukowski is baking up a storm. A special guest presentation is by Nelson’s Cynthia Quinn-Young, recently returned from Africa as one of 42 Canadian delegates representing the Canadian Grandmothers Campaign and the Stephen Lewis Foundation. 500 African grandmothers from 14 sub-Saharan countries gathered with the delegates for this first ever three day African/Canadian cultural exchange. This promises to be a special fun, informative and inspiring evening and a Bon Voyage to the Fay-Bukowski Family. Friday, January 7, 7 pm at The Langham. Admission by donation. All proceeds go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation through Kaslo’s Grammas to Grammas.

We’re regularly flooded with information on the importance of being slender. “Being thin or losing weight is the number one desire of most girls and women because it is associated with being in control, desirable and successful” says Merryl Bear, director of the National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC). Despite decades of new nutritional information and diet advice, Canadians today are no thinner than in previous generations. According to a recent report in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, research consistently shows that only about 5% to 10% of individuals who lose weight by dieting manage to keep it off for more than a year. Worse still, the report shows that dieters are 5 times more likely

to develop an eating disorder. “It’s time to stop fear-mongering about those extra pounds, and to value ourselves differently,â€? says Bear. According to the NEDIC website (www.nedic.ca), better health – and appearance – are often enjoyed by individuals who focus on being well nourished, physically active and socially engaged. The following are some suggestions to help you get there: • Acknowledge and appreciate what you have achieved in life, big and small. • Respect and value the natural diversity of human bodies, including your own. • Be physically active for the pleasure and health benefits it brings. • Engage in activities that make you feel joyful and purposeful. • Attend to your emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing. • Bring a sense of enjoyment to food preparation and eating. • Establish regular eating patterns and experiment with unfamiliar fruits and vegetables. • Feel comfortable eating when hungry and refusing food when not hungry, both in your home and others’. These time-honoured ways to respect and treat yourself well are a welcome change from all the taboos and punishments associated with over-focusing on weight, says Bear. It’s never too late to start living well. www.newscanada.com

Medical Qigong Practices Medical qiqong is an ancient Chinese healing art and has been accepted and taught in the Western world. It has been proven to heal and eliminate a multitude of diseases and pain, including physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Practitioners can self-heal, prevent diseases and maintain or restore health by enhancing their life force (qi). Advanced practitioners are able to project energy to heal diseases. A presentation by Ming Kit Kwan will describe how cultivating energy (qi) can avoid and eliminate diseases, establish emotional and metal stability, gain vitality and longevity. Participants will have an opportunity to feel the energy during specific exercises, witness a demonstration, learn some basic techniques to enhance energy, heal diseases and eliminate pain. Ming Kit Kwan has been practicing qigong and teaching classes in Nelson and in the Kootenays for many years. He has travelled extensively teaching workshops and healing patients. He is also involved in remote healing from requests through the internet. A qigong seminar will be held in Nelson on Friday, January 14 from 7 pm to 9:30 pm at Selkirk College Silverking campus, room #16. Pre-registration is required by calling 250352-6601. Proceeds will go to the Nelson Food Cupboard. Ongoing classes are held Mondays at 10:30 am at the Seniors Centre on Vernon street and Thursdays at 10 am at the Nelson United Church basement. )RVWHULQJ D SHW Help us give these pets shelter while they wait for their forever homes 6 most asked questions
FOSTERING HELPS SAVE LIVES
We have helped over 500 homeless pets in the past 3 years. But we can’t do it without you!
1.
Will I be stuck with the pet if it isn’t adopted? No. First, we have been very successful in finding homes for all our animals. But if the adoption takes longer than expected or wanted, we will move the pet to another foster home. We are a no-kill organization.
2.
Isn’t it too hard to let go of the pet? While it’s always difficult to say goodbye to a friend, it is much easier if you are happy with the pet’s new home. KAAP involves you in the adoption process, and you feel good about your foster pet’s future.
3.
Won’t it tie me down from traveling? No. Just give KAAP your schedule, and we will make it fit with our foster pets’ needs. We are looking for weekend-only and short-term foster homes as well, to help fill these gaps.
4.
What will it cost me? Only your precious non-renewable resource – your time. KAAP provides all the supplies for the pet. Anything you wish to donate will receive a tax receipt, as we are a registered charity.
5.
What qualifications do I need? A big heart, a home (or permission from your landlord to foster pets), a love and patience for animals, and time to spend with them. Let us know if you have any special skills or experience with animals, their training, or medical care.
6.
What if I need help? You always have a KAAP volunteer to call and discuss any concerns.

To Improve College Experience Aboriginal students at Selkirk College and College of the Rockies will find support and a place to gather once construction is complete on the colleges’ newly announced “Aboriginal Gathering Places.” The two spaces, valued together at nearly $2.5 million, will be built thanks in part to a $400,000 contribution from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). “The Aboriginal Gathering Places will enhance culturally relevant support for current and future Aboriginal students, as well as provide an opportunity for others to learn about Aboriginal culture,” said Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO. “We’re pleased to help fund these projects, which will enhance our local institutions and improve the college experience of the Basin’s Aboriginal residents.” According to the 2006 census, 6,695 status First Nations residents live in the Columbia Basin, including 677 on reserves in East Kootenay. Many live distantly from traditional support systems of family and community. The gathering places will also play a role in educating non-Aboriginal students about the history and culture of Canada’s First Nations. “Our Gathering Places will create a more supportive, welcoming and relevant environment for Aboriginal students and will support Selkirk College’s goal to better attract, retain and graduate Aboriginal learners,” said Angus Graeme, Selkirk College Interim President. While the projects are different in structure, timing and scope, the two colleges have committed to linking the
spaces, as well as one at Okanagan College, to enhance operations and the effectiveness of events and presenters visiting the region. The gathering place at Selkirk should be completed by late spring 2011. The College of the Rockies will complete its space in two to three years, with contributions like timber, sawn lumber, gravel and labour coming from local Ktunaxa organizations.
Photo: Selkirk College’s Aboriginal Gathering Places is currently under construction. Angus Graeme, Selkirk College Interim President, accepts CBT’s contribution from Wayne Lundeberg, CBT Community Liaison. Still new to Kaslo, Julie is eager to get to know community members and begin working with Katimavik community partners on different projects.

Julie believes that Katimavik challenges and empowers volunteers, while at the same time teaching them about a new region of Canada. “This year is all about personal and professional growth, for both the volunteers and myself, and I’m excited to get started again.” The 11 youth in Kaslo will be volunteering with several local non-profit organizations, including: Kaslo and Area Youth Council, Langham Cultural Society, North Kootenay Lake Community Services, The Kootenay Lake Historical Society, Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society, Periwinkle Children’s Centre, JV Humphries School, Village of Kaslo Fire Department, Kaslo Infonet Society and Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society.
