The West Kootenay Women’s Association’s Digital History Project, KootenayFeminism.com, is holding two workshops on digital video editing and uploading to YouTube. This digital archival website hosts the stories of many Kootenay organizations: their struggles and successes from 1970 to the present as they increase the successful participation of women in society. It also reaches back to the early days of the previous century with beautiful documents from the Kaslo Women’s Institute. Marcia Braundy just won the CRIAW (Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women) Barbara Roberts Award for her work on this project, and notes that “it couldn’t have been done without all the wonderful, hardworking volunteers who contributed to the project’s success.� The next phase of the project, partially supported by the Barber Digitization Program at UBC, includes digitizing the audio and video archives and we are looking for volunteers to help with this process. These rich and inspiring archives include interviews with our elders who created some of Canada’s finest organizations: Project Ploughshares and the Voice of Women; to the many coordinators of the Nelson Women’s Centre over the years; Kootenay singers and songwriters; Women’s Festival events; speakers at the C-4 conference at Selkirk; IWD celebrations; and What is Feminism? Carrying Guns Instead Of Notebooks Butterflies in Bucaramanga presents a humanitarian view of the conflict in Colombia, says author Tanna Patterson-Z, and is based on a true story. Patterson-Z will read from her novel at the Kaslo and District Public Library on Monday, March 28 at 7 pm. Based on the story of Ed Leonard of Creston, who was kidnapped in 1998 by Colombian guerrillas, Butterflies in Bucaramanga (NeWest Press) explores the collision between revolutionary politics and Western corporate imperatives. In this face-off between mining and the local people, it is the butterflies, oddly, that have so much to do with Leonard’s survival. People magazine writer William Plummer led with this: “For 105 days, Ed Leonard trudged through the Andes Mountains guarded by 11 men and women with automatic weapons. He bathed in frigid rivers, lived in a tent and lost 21 pounds. Kidnapped on June 24 by the rebel group FARC (Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia), the 60-year-old Canadian driller, who explores core samples for gold and silver, had no idea if he would ever see his wife and children again.” The story of Leonard’s capture and eventual trade for Terramundo Drilling president Norbert Reinhard, captivated headlines for months; at the same time, Patterson-Z worked alongside Leonard’s wife, Trollee, at the Creston optometry clinic. After his release, Ed and Trollee agreed the story could be written, and Patterson- Z searched for a writer. Great story, they said, why don’t you write it? And so she did. Patterson-Z (the Z, by the way, stands for her husband’s name: Zackowski) says when the book first came out, she was afraid of the response. “I hoped that I was a good enough writer to make people believe the story. I hoped that the perspective in the book was similar to that of Ed and Trollee. I discovered early in the writing process that when someone else writes your story, it becomes their story. I was fortunate: Ed and Trollee allowed me to fictionalize and were very forgiving and generous.” She believes there’s a reason why the people of Columbia, with its terrible human rights record, take up arms up against their government. And she remembers Ed Leonard’s comment about the guerrillas who took away his freedom for nearly four months. “They are just kids. 8M\ WN \PM ?MMS" 4]KSa A hail and hearty hello everyone! Lucky’s the name. Came by it honestly enough; I was wandering the highway and was almost hit by a vehicle. Fortunately I didn’t, and was brought to the Trail Shelter. I’m a big, handsome, (and obviously modest) brindled mastiff cross. I’m a 7 year old neutered male who is now ready to depart this way station in my life’s journey. It was a good stop, as the lovely people here have fattened me up and even taught me a few rudimentary manners. Despite this, I’ll still require an experienced and confident dog guardian. Further obedience training will also be required as I admit that I can be a bit strong willed. But I also realize that in order to find my forever home, I’m going to have to make some changes. Now it is a very difficult thing as a man to admit this; but there is an old saying, “The harder you try the luckier you get�. Towards that end, I am willing to try very hard to learn how to be a better dog companion as long as my new guardian is willing to put forth the same amount of effort to train with me. This is not only to learn good manners, but as an important bonding experience for us both. I am extremely playful, and can get bored easily, so a good exercise routine is also required for a happy, healthy Lucky. I absolutely love catching snowballs in the air and playing fetch. And after a hard day’s activity, I would like nothing more than to relax at your feet and watch a little TV. Households served by the Beaver Valley Water System are invited to participate in a Residential Water Sense program which includes free low-flow showerhead packages. Twenty-one year old Russell Vance of Beaver Falls put his money where his heart is! And for doing that, he’s the lucky winner of the Kootenay Savings $10,000 Win-Win Giveaway. That’s $5,000 for him and $5,000 for local charity. The contest, which ran from October 1 to December 31, 2010 sought to encourage savings in these times of easy consumer credit. Any member investing in a term deposit one year or longer was automatically entered into the prize draw. There were no pesky entry forms to fill out, silly trivia questions to answer or amazing feats of strength to perform - just an investment into any one of Kootenay Savings investment products. “Our members’ financial wellness is important to us,� explained Dario Cescon, Kootenay Savings VP: Marketing. “The Win-Win contest helped to promote good savings habits, and to have a young adult like Russell Vance win, who is saving for his first home, is fantastic.� As the contest winner, Russell will receive a $5,000 term deposit, and Kootenay Savings will make a $5,000 donation to The Arthritis Society in his honour. “This is really great�, offered Russell. “I’ll be able to put this $5000 towards a down payment on a house, and at the same time I get to help a charity that I care about.
