March Bike Girls
We at Rubber Down have colored up our March issue with some fine girls and exclusive custom bikes! by Andrew Fehn
The Cover Model is Heather Reynolds, who is beautifully displaying the legendary “Captain America” bike used in the classic movie Easy Rider. Peter Fonda would have surely rather had Heather on the back of his bike than Jack Nickolson! Heather is a single mother who is originally from Houma, Louisiana, and now resides in Nashville, Tennessee. She is a licensed hematologist and says that modeling is a definite interest, but she wouldn’t quit her day job for its pursuit. She finds her peace of mind with a passion for a wide range of musical styles. Heather is a very strong-willed woman, and seems to have a grip on living one day at a time.
Bike of the Month Girl: On our Bike of the Month, Samantha Jo Hill is simply getting pretty while firmly holding onto the New Orleans Saints custom rocket. Samantha, 23 years old, is a small town girl who grew up in Ashland, Illinois. Besides modeling, her love is photography. She attended a community college for liberal arts which included photography. She’s business-minded and is working on her own company regarding this field. We wish her the best fortune in her endeavors.
Calendar Girl: Calendar girl, Miss Tara Zeringue, is sitting soft saddle on an “old west” theme custom painted Sportster. Tara likes to keep things in her life simple and brags of nothing. Family is what keeps matters of the heart in the right place. She’s a cosmetologist and, like many women, loves the world of fashion. For Tara, a day at the beach with the love of her life, her dog Roscoe, is the only thing she needs to sooth her soul.
Our staff and readers appreciate the girls who make our pages much more enjoyable to look at. RUBBERDOWN MAGAZINE // MARCH 2013 // PAGE 2

We would like to take this time to remind you of all the motorcycle riders and “bikers” alike that will be filling our highways and streets. We feel a personal commitment to tell all of our readers to “watch out” for motorcycles. A recent personal experience prompted me to discuss this topic. On a trip back from Jackson, Mississippi, we were feeling really good about our visit, the progress we made, seeing an old and beloved friend and the wonderful direction our magazine is going in. Carrots have many health benefits as well. They are packed full of anti-oxidants, as in alpha and beta-carotene, vitamin C, and lutein. The “oranger” the carrot, the richer in beta-carotene. It is also true what your mom told you all your life, that carrots

are good for your eyes. Eating them won’t help you see any better, but beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A through the liver, and a lack of vitamin A can lead to blindness in the most extreme case. Eating carrots has been shown to reduce cancer risks, and has also been proven to improve your heart health too!

or many years there were a lot of people out there that would argue that the Dallas Cowboys were America’s team. Then, in 2005, a badass bitch named “Katrina” rolled through the city of New Orleans and killed thousands. As the story goes, the city, and the state of Louisiana were at an all time low, and we sure needed a “fix”. In marched the Saints, and the rest is Super Bowl history. I am a diehard Saints fan myself and was proud as anyone else to brag that our Bayou Bully Boys made the grade. I am not so closed-minded as to think that Louisiana residents are the only Saints fans out there, but man was I shocked to find a diehard Saints fan in Springfield, Illinois, sporting this incredible bike, dedicated to Saints fans everywhere.

Project Bike from Smitty's Cycles on a Jesse James West Coast Frame from beginning to end.
MIDNIGHT RIDER PROJECT BIKE
by Andrew Fehn
f there’s a time to “catch” the midnight rider, it may possibly be now. But as you know, you can’t catch him; he’s just busy planning things at his campfire while slowly feeding his horse. As you can see, Smitty finally has his bike’s V-Twin motor that’s going to turn the rubber on this final product. We can blame the lack of progress on the Mardi Gras, but you can choose whether it’s that or by the amount of bike repairs ordered in his shop. I say, good for him, because this overwhelming amount of business will surely help the funding needed for this bike. This isn’t some MTV Orange County Chopper type show where they add deadlines to enhance the show’s interest; this is just us, covering a normal guy’s bike project. Our magazine will continue to support Smitty and his crew’s ideas and efforts and we’re sure our biker brothers will do the same.

GOLD WINGERS FLYING SLOW by Andrew Fehn he Gold Wing Road Riders Association flies high and excites the parade crowds with brilliant Mardi Gras colors and dressings. For years they have been riding slow and proud while celebrating Mardi Gras on their individual “mini-floats” here in New Orleans. These riders are true enthusiasts as they struggle for a few miles on top of these heavy machines, throwing beads and other trinkets as they safely entertain the parade-goers. We at Rubber Down Magazine got lucky and ran into them in a parking lot while they were gathering together for the day’s events. Among them was the president of the New Orleans Chapter, A.J. Gros (top) and its founder Fritz Beter (middle right). Meeting with them for a few short moments was a pleasure and they stood tall behind the club’s history and its incredible growth. The mission statement or motto that is the core of their reason to be is; Friendship, Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. Our magazine is networking for all bike enthusiasts who involve themselves in fundraising for special needs and charitable events. We want to thank GWRRA for their efforts and participation regarding these important human needs.

are many stories regarding the original motorcycle that Peter Fonda’s character rode cross country to his tragic death in the 1969 film phenomenon, Easy Rider. I believe it’s safe to say that Mr. Fonda did help build it and, sadly, the bike was burnt in the end. This bike was built in 1999 by California Customs. Al purchased it from Carson “CuzMan”, under the condition that he would never sell it. After Fonda actually blew up the original during filming, he authorized the building of 750 authentic Captain America Bike replicas. This bike is not a kit, and does not have a pre-assembled title. It comes complete with an S&S super stock 106 engine. Helmet and plaque were signed and numbered by Peter Fonda.
drag racing. Growing up in Bayou Dularge, he worked hard in the cane fields and inherited the rough life style of the shrimp business in Louisiana’s gulf waters. His grandfather handed his experience to his father which led him to becoming the owner of Al’s Shrimp Company. Throughout the years of his labors, it provided him with the opportunities to own and compete with a variety of wheeled machines. We want to acknowledge our thanks to Al and his wonderful wife Denise for riding out, spending a memorable time, and having us feature their legendary chopper on Rubber Down Magazine’s cover.

DO IT YOURSELFIIIIII by Kenneth Blanchard ne of the most important tasks a biker can do is change the lubricants & filters in their bikes. This task may seem like a chore and a pain sometimes, but it is the one thing you as an owner can do to ensure the longevity of your bike. This is not the area you want to find a “bargain”. For most reading this article your bike is aircooled and as everyone knows if you are not moving you are not providing cooling air for your engine. The oil is basically getting baked while you’re not moving. Here’s where the oil’s properties are put to the test. Is that oil you got for a few dollars less a quart than the name brands actually holding up? Any oil can be manufactured to be great in one aspect of what an oil is supposed to do. It may have great viscosity protection, but fall short on sludge protection, wet clutch protection, internal rust protection, and gear protection. Any oil that is truly high quality will remain consistent in all areas of protection provided by the lubricant. I cannot count how many times someone has called me looking for oil for their bike and the most important item on their mind is price. Yes, you can buy cheaper oil, but when you have thousands invested in your bike, what’s a few dollars more to ensure you have a lubricant that’s protecting your engine? Just as important as using high quality oil is using a high quality oil and air filter. Is buying an oil filter for $3.00 less really saving you money? Is that oil filter rated at 40 microns better than a oil filter rated at 20 microns? To me $3.00 is nothing to pay for double the filtration for an engine costing thousands. Same thing applies for air filters. Keeping airborne contaminates from getting inside your engine is so crucial to long engine life. Just like the oil filter, is that $3.00 to $4.00 really a bargain? When you get outside participles inside your engine it’s basically like having microscopic sandpaper wearing at your engine internal components.
IS THAT OIL YOU GOT FOR A FEW DOLLARS LESS A QUART THAN THE NAME BRANDS
ACTUALLY HOLDING UP?
So what is an bike owner to do? Most manufactures of high quality oils post the products characteristics in all test categories instead of boasting of just one area. In my opinion if you cannot readily find the characteristics of a product, keep looking. If a product is guaranteed to perform at a certain level the manufacture will not be bashful in posting the product’s complete performance results. As someone once said, “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

“The 4 Seasons in Louisiana”: crawfish, crabs, shrimp, and oysters! Three women were in the laundromat one day talking about how good their man is in bed. As fate may have it, all three men were named Leroy. One of the women said, “How I know y’all ain’t talkin’ ‘bout my Leroy?” So, to solve this, they came up with the idea to give their

Leroys nicknames: “We can name them after soft drinks.” The first lady said “OK, my Leroy will be Mountain Dew, cause when he mounts me, he knows what to do.” The second lady said, “My Leroy will be 7-Up, ‘cause he has seven inches, and he sure can get it up!” Then the third lady said, “My Leroy will be Jack Daniels!” The two other women told her at the same time, “That ain’t no soft drink! That is a hard liquor!” The third lady responded, “Yep, that is my Leroy!” On a typical south Louisiana afternoon in July, it is real hot and humid. heavy jackets! Boudreaux asked Marie why she was dressed like that on what surely had to be the hottest day of the year, and she said, “Boudreaux, look at da’ can of paint. It say ‘for best results put on two coats’, so dat’s what I did!” I just had a talk with all of the people living in my head. It has been confirmed by majority vote… they do they think you’re an asshole! I can start having sex with a lot of women again, ‘cause I just had all my shots! I had an earthquake in my pants… and you are smelling the aftershock!

ably get at least seventy-five different answers. Well, this is my answer to this age-old question and remember, it’s just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. Well, here goes: In my opinion a rider is someone who probably loves bikes a great deal and loves to ride as much as the next guy. He takes care of his bike just as good as anyone else does and he probably enjoys going to events and rallies just like you and I do. He can be single, married, or divorced, have
He remains the same day in and day out. Usually his dress and demeanor are steadfast. He’s always a biker. During the week the rider is a lawyer or dentist, but the biker no matter what his job, he remains a biker. The biker does not worry about what the neighbors or his co-workers think of him and the way he dresses, looks or talks. He is happy with his way of life. This is a good example of what most people call the biker lifestyle. He lives it day in and day out and never changes. It’s a way of life.

Sunday evening he becomes average Joe Citizen. Monday morning he puts on a suit and tie or other work clothes and goes to work and probably never thinks of or mentions his bike the entire day unless he tells someone at work where he rode to this weekend and how many miles it was there and back. If his bike needs the oil changed, he probably takes it to his local dealership and has them do the work. That also goes for changing spark plugs, replacing batteries, etc. This guy is probably more apt to be the guy that passes by when you’re broke down on the side of the highway and gives that obligatory wave. He means well, though... he’s just not educated in the old ways. He is just not a biker. The biker, on the other hand, rides his bike as much as he can, seven days a week if possible. When he goes to work on Monday morning he rides his bike. As many wives would say, he talks about that damn bike every chance he gets to anyone that will listen. He lives, eats and breathes bikes. If this guy owns a cage it is probably at least seven or eight years old and does not look as good as his bike does, because it is just a necessity of life and the bike is his passion. The biker doesn’t care where he rode this weekend, or how many miles it was there and back, because to a biker, it’s not the destination that counts, it’s the ride that is everything. If you are broken down on the side of the highway, the RUBBERDOWN MAGAZINE // MARCH 2013 // PAGE 26

- Road Hog
RECIPE OF THE MONTH by Pa Pa Hoo Doo
I’m a “foodie” and a fan of “scratch” and/or slow cooking, but with so many roads and so little time, we need some short cuts. So here is one of my favorites….enjoy!
CRAWFISH AND CORN BISQUE Ingredients: 1 bag 10-12 oz. frozen seasoning blend
In a heavy saucepan or soup/stock pot, sweat down the veggies, including the bag of
1 can whole kernel corn
frozen seasoning blend, along with the whole kernel corn, drained. Sautee the garlic,
1 can crème style corn
herbs and spices in the butter on medium heat. Add the stock or bouillon to sweated
1 can crème of celery soup
veggie mixture, blending well, and simmer for 2 minutes.
12 to 16 oz. crawfish tails (shrimp or
crab can be substituted)
1 tsp favorite Cajun seasoning 1 tsp. dry Italian herb blend 3 cloves garlic 2 tsp. dried parsley ½ stick unsalted butter Stock or shrimp or fish boullion
When veggies are soft and translucent, add the creamed corn and cream soup. Add ½ of the half and half and simmer for about 5 minutes. Add the rest of the half and half and Swiss cheese. When cheese has completely melted, add crawfish and simmer until desired consistency is achieved. Taste and adjust seasoning. By using the creamed corn and cream of celery soup, you skip having to make a roux, and cooking for a long time. This gives you that cooked all day restaurant quality taste that you would pay a high price for.
1 Qt. half and half
Serve with crusty French bread.
3 to 4 slices swiss cheese
Until next time, ride safe and keep the shiny side up and the rubber down…

Most women are attracted to sports models because they are lighter in weight, yet have more torque than some of your larger bikes. Plus, the marketing of these bikes are geared more towards females because they are smaller in size. When a woman sits on a bike that is right for her, she can “feel” that it is right for her, so she buys it.
WHEN A WOMAN SITS ON A BIKE THAT IS RIGHT FOR HER, SHE CAN FEEL THAT IT IS RIGHT FOR HER. One bike that has become popular with women is the Harley Davidson Switchback. The Switchback has even joined the ranks with the pink Cadillac as, one of the preferred gifts that Mary Kay Cosmetics offers its top sales reps as a status symbol for excellence. Most of the women that ride admit to loving the freedom of the road , and helping in causes close to their hearts. Unless you ride, there is really no way to understand why we ride, says one of our local lady bikers.
One of our favorite lady bikers, Marlene Mobley, rides her 1800 Goldwing.
