Summer of Family Fun From storytelling to sword fighting, the curtain is about to go up on a summer of family fun with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. A special programme of events will run across the Shakespeare family homes in Stratfordupon-Avon throughout July, August and into September. Highlights include sword fighting and live Tudor music at Shakespeare’s Birthplace, storytelling workshops at New Place, a nature trail at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and outdoor theatre at Mary Arden’s Farm – which will also open for a series of family days in addition to a number of speciallycurated experiences. Rachael Boyd, director of visitor experience at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said: “With the summer holidays fast approaching, we’re really excited to be announcing a fun-packed programme of family-friendly events throughout the coming months, when we look forward to welcoming visitors from near and far to reconnect and enjoy Shakespeare’s work, life and times. We’ve been working hard to plan events for all ages across our sites, including at Mary Arden’s Farm where families can immerse themselves in Tudor times on special dates throughout the summer.” The full ‘Summer with Shakespeare’ programme is detailed here, with tickets now on sale. Richard III Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-uponAvon. “Conscience is but a word that cowards use” Young Richard of Gloucester uses the chaos of the Wars of the Roses to begin his unscrupulous climb to power. Despite being manifestly unfit to govern, he seizes the crown, as King Richard III. But how does he do it? How do we let tyrants get away with it? How do they find their way to power? Why do we buy into it? And how can it be stopped? Richard III is a savagely comic analysis of the exercise of power. It reminds us both of the dangers of tyranny and of our duty not to let it go unchecked. Directed by Gregory Doran and featuring Arthur Hughes (Vassa, The Innocents, #Sugarwater, Then Barbara met Alan) as Richard, this is the thrilling climax to Shakespeare’s first great history cycle.
