Peter Lanyon Painting Totals Record £98,400

A small recently discovered painting by one of the most important 20th Century British artists has recently totalled a record £98,400 at a Cotswold auction (9th October).

The work titled ‘Portreath 2 - Roadmenders’ is by celebrated Cornish artist Peter Lanyon, (1918-1964). Depicting a stylised view of the north Cornish fishing village Portreath, the work shows the harbour and surround landscape and is dated 1949. In a typically muted palette, the work measures just 28 by 23cm and was consigned by a Devon based private client whose parents in law had purchased it directly from the artist sometime in the 1950’s.

Moreton in Marsh auctioneers Kinghams who handled the work carried out further research and were grateful to have it authenticated by the Peter Lanyon authority, (and catalogue raisonne author) Toby Treves. Estimated at £30,000-50,000, works rarely appear at auction and as such immense pre-sale interest from private collectors and the art trade resulted in it surpassing this to finally sell to a UK based trade buyer who bid £98,400 to secure it.

Peter Lanyon was a British painter of landscapes leaning towards abstraction and one of the most important artists to emerge in post-war Britain. He received tuition from fellow celebrated Cornish artist Ben Nicholson in the late 1930’s. His body of work are the most important reappraisals of modernism in painting anywhere. In 2018 Toby Treves published the catalogue raisonne after decades of research. In the late 1950’s he trained as a glider pilot in order to gain a deeper understanding of his native landscape. It was a gliding accident in 1964 at the age of just 46 which abruptly ended his career.
