Highlighting the work of many local designers, dozens of garments will be presented which illustrate that ‘wearable art’ is meant to be worn and enjoyed, by the maker and the viewer. The pieces will show how innovative outfits come in a variety of sizes, compliment the style and shape of the creator, and are appropriate to the climate and culture of our Pacific West. A new fundraising project for APWQ! APWQ extends an open invitation to everyone to create and donate a table runner or table topper. Your creation will be offered for sale as fundraiser to benefit APWQ at the 2013 Pacific West Quilt Show. The item will be on display and be priced to sell to the public at the APWQ Merchandise booth at the show. We plan to have a list of the donors of these items on display.

Join us for for the Charity Sew-In as we stitch up pillowcases for the 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge event, a nationwide challenge with a goal of creating and donating one million pillowcases to local charities. Our goal is to make pillowcases and donate them to the kids at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and to adult and hospice patients throughout the MultiCare organization. We are inviting quilters, crafters and sewers to make a case for a good cause. APWQ will collect the pillowcases, donate them to MultiCare and update the pillowcase counter at AllPeopleQuilt.com/millionpillowcases. The counter will track nationwide progress toward the goal of one million pillowcases. To date, more than 460,000 pillowcases have been recorded. If you are not able to attend the Sew-In, please consider making a pillowcase or two and bringing them with you to the show. You can deliver them to the INFO Desk, Level 3 at the GTCTC. Special Exhibits SewBatik Fabric Challenge
Stitches In Time For 2013 we will present a special quilt exhibit, Stitches Through Time, to feature a retrospective of APNQ/APWQ winning contest quilts from 1994 to 2012. This exhibit will chronicle the outstanding work that has been created in the region throughout the years. We are excited to be able to present the best of the best in one location for all to admire and enjoy.
SewBatik is our 2013 Fabric Challenge Sponsor and the fat quarter packs sold out in record time! The rules are simple: use a recognizable amount of the challenge fabric on the front of the quilt. Quilts are to be constructed of three layers of fabric and quilted by hand, machine, or both. They can be any type of pattern, design or method of construction and the finished quilts should measure 18" x 18". We look forward to seeing how the quiltmakers will incorporate Pansy, this fabulous batik, into their quilts. We hope that you will be inspired by their imagination and creativity.
Cindy Needham - Machine Magic Cindy has been quilting now for 42 years. She was a hand quilter for the first 25 years and begrudgingly turned to machine quilting in order to finish her increasing number of teaching samples. She admits that it was not love at first sight...she hated it. She loved the tempo of hand quilting, feeling the quilt as she stitched...watching the transformation of fabric into a quilt and the rhythm of the needle. Her first machine quilting class did not go well; the magic trick that was going to quickly transform her into an amazing machine quilter eluded her. Not willing to let her sewing machine beat her, she practiced every night for three months. Finally, she was able to obtain a good rhythm and stitch length. Years and years later, spool after spool of thread, stitch by stitch, her patience, and perseverance have been rewarded. Recognized for her spectacular vintage linen quilts, she has created her own unique style of heirloom machine quilting. Specially curated for the 2013 PWQS, this selection of elegantly quilted pieces displays her progression as a machine quilter throughout the years.

La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum The Museum’s permanent collection includes quilts and textiles ranging from the 1820’s to contemporary works. This special exhibit will feature a selection of the antique quilts in their collection, as well as quilts on loan to them from collectors.
Special Exhibits Founded in 1997, the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum is the only quilt museum in the State of Washington. Their mission is to collect, preserve and exhibit local, national and international quilts and textiles, provide an educational experience, and preserve the historic Gaches Mansion. The museum features changing quarterly exhibits that range from traditional antique bedquilts to contemporary works by emerging and established fiber artists. The Textile Enrichment Series is an educational program that includes lectures and workshops throughout the year, and the annual Quilt & Fiber Arts Festival is the largest international festival of it’s kind in the Pacific Northwest. Collective Stitches Group Quilts Quilts made by three or more people Coxcomb Linda Tellesbo, Carolyn Kreps, Cindi McCracken and Judy Niemeyer Reaching the Target - Valerie Wilson The Fibre Art Network (FAN) is a cooperative of self-defined art quilters based in Western Canada. The cooperative was first conceived in the spring of 1997 by British Columbians Pat Crucil and Gail Hunt and then organized later that year by Gail. The group is committed to promoting quilting as an art form and each other as artists. FAN members come from Western Canada - British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. FAN membership includes emerging fibre artists, teachers, authors, judges and award winning quilt artists. Many have shown their work nationally and internationally and some have won both national and international recognition for their work. The cooperative engenders fellowship of like-minded friends and celebrates differences as well as common interests.

Quilt Appraisals Certified American Quilter’s Society appraisers Eileen Trestain, Ann Bodle-Nash and Beverly Dunivent, will be available on site to examine and appraise your old and new quilted textiles, including quilts hanging in the show. Appraisals will be conducted from 12-4 pm Friday, and 10 am-4 pm Saturday and Sunday. The charge is $50 per quilt for an in-depth written appraisal and $20 for a verbal evaluation which includes the age of the quilt, quilt care and storage information (no dollar value will be given). Appointments and payments will be made directly with the appraisers. To schedule an appointment please contact Ann at annnash51@gmail.com.
Quilt Restoration Quilt conservator Anne Dawson will be available onsite to discuss restoration and conservation possibilities for quilts in need of tender loving care. Anne has been a quiltmaker since 1972 and has been restoring quilts professionally for more than 20 years. Oral evaluations will be conducted 12-4 pm Friday, and 10 am-4 pm Saturday. Limit three per customer. Walk-ins welcome but appointments will take precedence. The charge is $25 per quilt for an in-depth oral evaluation. 2013 Show Judges APWQ’S PHILOSOPHY is to present the highest quality regional juried and judged exhibition of quilts at the Pacific West Quilt Show. Whether entered in a Traditional or Art category, an accepted work will be one that presents strong visual impact and stands out above the competition in its category. Scott Murkin - North Carolina
Sherri Bain Driver took a quilting class to meet people after moving back to her home state of Colorado when her husband left the Navy in 1987. She fell in love with all things quilty and has been hooked ever since. In the subsequent years, Sherri has written books, judged quilt shows, taught workshops, and presented programs to thousands of quilters. She considers her job with McCall’s Quilting/ Quick Quilts as an extension of teaching. Sherri loves to design and create quilts featuring unusual fabrics and techniques. She has been judging quilts since 1991 and in 1997 was certified as a quilt judge by the National Quilting Association.
Scott Murkin, M.D. is a hospice physician from North Carolina. Originally from a quilting family in Illinois, he currently designs original quilts for the bed and wall. Scott exhibits nationally and internationally and has his textile artworks in prestigious public and private collections. He has had his quilts appear in numerous publications including Great American Quilts, Quilting Quarterly, Quiltmaker, and American Photo by Quilter Magazine. Scott Alyssa Paige Murkin Photography is an NQA Certified Quilt Judge who has judged throughout the country, including the American Quilter’s Society, International Quilt Association, and the National Quilting Association.

Instructor Biographies
Helen Powell first experienced quilts and quilting at her mother's knee and has been involved with quilting in one form or another throughout her life. While on the board of the Northern California Quilt Council (NCQC) she participated in and completed the National Quilting Association (NQA) course on quilt judging in 1992. On behalf of NCQC who again sponsored the NQA judging course, Helen audited the course and co-authored a paper regarding the judging process for guilds on the West Coast. Since then, Helen has been judging quilts and wearable art competitions at county fairs, quilt guilds, the California State Fair, and Pacific International Quilt Festival. Helen lives with her husband and one gentle rescue Border Collie in Sacramento, CA. Jody Ohrt has been quilting since 1995. She completed A Course on Judging Quilts and Wearable Art sponsored by The Northern California Quilt Council (NCQC) in 2001 and has judged many quilting competitions including The Best of The Valley Quilt Show and Pacific International Quilt Festival. She is a co-owner of The West Coast Quilt Judging Academy. The first course on judging quilts and wearable art was presented in October 2012 in conjunction with Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara, CA. Jody was instrumental in the redevelopment of the course as well as serving as an instructor. Dawn Licker is an avid quilter, quilt show judge, AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser and was actively involved in the California Heritage Quilt Project. Folk Art and Baltimore Album Appliqué are her passions and she has studied with many teachers including Elly Sienkiewicz. She has also been involved with fabric design for Kaufman Fabrics and Elly Sienkiewicz's fabric line. Dawn is active in the Northern California Quilt Council and in 2003 completed NCQC’s A Course on Judging Quilts and Wearable Art. She has judged quilts and wearable art at guild shows, county fairs, and Pacific International Quilt Festival.

This is not your grandmother's fusible web! Join in the fun while we combine paint, powders and foils with a variety of fusible webs and interfacings to create texture, layering and pattern. We'll try stamping, scrunching and ripping to make a small abstract sample suitable for further embellishments.

Thursday Workshops Open Thread Bar Cindy Needham Thurs: 10 am-5 pm Bernina Sewing machines provided Skill Level: All The workshop begins with a morning lecture where students will learn how to use specialty threads along with proper delivery, machine tension and correct needle usage. Samples will be used to demonstrate different threads and techniques. Work will then begin on a practice panel and students will learn how machine tension affects the stitch quality with different decorative threads. You may work on this for the day or you can learn how to thread play on provided floral panels. Bring your questions or concerns regarding threads, needles, tensions. Cindy would like to emphasize that this class is NOT a commercial. She will educate you on how to use any and all types of threads in your machine regardless of the manufacturer. If you have threads that you are having difficulty using, please bring those to class too. Adding color to a quilted piece is taking the quilting world by storm and Sherry is providing an awesome workshop to share the colorful techniques she has been developing over the past several years! Sherry is providing each student with a pre-quilted original design so that you can start coloring that quilt right away! You will be using Sherry’s vast collection of ink pencils, Gelly Roll pens and Polished Pigments and you will learn how to choose colors, which technique best fits your quilt, shading, highlighting and antiquing and the importance of outlining. This is a fun, no stress workshop where you will be provided with a very solid foundation of good information and instruction on free-motion quilting. The class begins with how to set up your work space; choosing the correct threads, batting and needles, and how to properly baste your quilt. The afternoon is spent quilting and learning how to obtain a perfect rhythm and stitch length and how to execute beautiful free-motion quilting designs. Lotus Blossom Table Runner continued... In this class you will be making a stunning 18" x 44" table runner with Asian fabrics and Sashiko motifs. The lotus blossom designs are fusible motifs provided in the class kit. Students will learn how to transfer the sashiko designs to the fabric and do sashiko stitching. Instructions will be given for finishing the table runner at home. Teresa Franks and Nancy Behrendt Sat: 2-5 pm Evergreen Chapter, Embroiderers' Guild of America Hand Class Skill Level: All *Class is limited to 12 students This class is open to anyone with an interest in surface embroidery techniques. We will focus on a choice between two small commercially available redwork patterns and stitches that may be used to complete them. Written instructions, needle, embroidery floss, and fabric with design pre-transfered will be provided. Plenty of time will be allocated for stitching and some students may actually finish their chosen design before the end of class! Designs will Students are encouraged to bring their favorite embroidery stitch book or reference to further a discussion about embroidery reference books. There will be additional dialog about various types of transfer methods used to incorporate embroidery into quilting. As an added interest Teresa Franks, a Certified National Needlearts Judge, will discuss what a Needlearts judge looks at when judging surface embroidery. The instructors will encourage participation in discussion and sharing of information and experiences. One of the best loved quilting designs of all times is the feather and it seems to be one of the more difficult ones to beautifully quilt. Cindy loves to quilt feathers and enjoys adding special touches and details. Your day will be spent learning how to design and quilt gorgeous heirloom feathers and how to add personal details to make them your own. You will also learn how to create heirloom style backgrounds based on ½" grids. These techniques will be practiced on provided Dupioni silk quilt sandwiches.

Denise Applegate-Schober
Free Motion and Sew Much More ▪ Sat: 9 am-12 pm Denise is a fiber artist living just north of Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has a true understanding of the sewing world with new and different styles. Her background in sewing, quilting and fiber arts gives her the artistic edge to develop new and innovative techniques for sewers and quilters. Denise has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in fiber and fashion design from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. At the Art Institute she received numerous awards and traveled extensively to Europe (Paris, Germany, and Austria) as part of her studies.
Evergreen Chapter The Embroiderers' Guild of America, Inc Redwork Surface Embroidery ▪ Sat: 2-5 pm
Teresa Frank's passion for sewing and hand embroidery started at a young age when she was introduced to surface embroidery by her mother. This passion has been nourished for many years through self-study and participation in workshops, seminars, and correspondence courses through the Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA), American Needlepoint Guild (ANG), Northwest Sampler Guild and National Academy of Needlearts (NAN). Teresa is also a Certified National Needlearts Judge through NAN and has judged for national as well as local needleart shows. Nancy Behrendt's love of stitching and needlework began as a young girl. The first sweater she completed was a ski sweater for her father while in middle school. Her love of stitching was fostered by her mother and grew into many years of association with the EGA, ANG and the Northwest Sampler Guild. As her family moved around, Nancy’s membership in these guilds allowed her to participate in classes, workshops, seminars, retreats, and also foster wonderful friendships all over the country. Nancy is the past president of various EGA and ANG chapters and is current president of Evergreen Chapter EGA in Western WA. As Outreach Chair, she has also coordinated the Kissing Pillow project. This project involved giving small hand-stitched pillows to all deploying soldiers and their families at JBLM. Evergreen Chapter has given out over 24,000 Kissing Pillows in the past eight years.
Reva Flood
Decorative Quilting With Hooped Embroidery-Fri: 9 am-12 pm Reva has been sewing from a very young age. She continued with her interest in sewing by pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Apparel Design. After having discovered a love for teaching Reva began instructing sewing technique classes eighteen years ago. Her goal for all her classes is for everyone to have a great time and learn techniques that the students can take home and use on their own projects (she is not like the Home EC teacher you remember from high school)! Her passion finds a place in all forms of sewing, and since she was introduced to machine embroidery, found it to be even more exciting and moved her to start her own embroidery business. Reva is currently the Education Manager for Quality Sewing & Vacuum and still very much enjoys teaching something new to those who love to learn.
Lana Lee Jones
Delightful Little Quilt ▪ Sat: 2-5 pm Lana has been sewing since she was 10 years old. As a selftaught sewing artist, all of the tips and techniques she teaches are “what works for her.” Lana continues to perfect her craft with the influence from some of the most talented people in the industry. What she then presents to her students is a combination of all of her experience and industry influence that has been processed through her own creative filter. The result is a creative style that is both unique and inspirational. Whether she is teaching, creating designs with embroidery software, machine embroidering, thread painting, appliquéing, or exploring another type of machine art, she is truly addicted! Add some luscious fibers, paints and beading by machine, and she will be lost in the creative flow of a design for hours. Currently, Lana works for Quality Sewing as an Educational Consultant. This allows her to expand her knowledge as she learn new techniques and ideas to present to her customers and students.

Heidi Lund
Janet has been enjoying and teaching Crazy Quilting for decades. She has won multiple awards for her original quilts and designs. During her frequent travels, she has taken numerous extensive classes with many of the Crazy Quilt Divas and Embellishment Gurus. She resides in Gig Harbor, WA where many of her quilts have been a part of several Art Exhibits. Her goal in life is to create beauty in her world and to teach others to create it in theirs.
Heidi is a wearable artist who has a passion for fabric, fiber and surface embellishments. Her garments and art quilts have been exhibited in national and international shows such as the International Quilt Festival, Quilt Expo, Road to California, La Conner Quilt & Textile Quiltfest, Pacific International, MQX and APNQ and APWQ Shows. A five time Bernina Fashion Show designer she has had work published in Creative Quilting the Journal Quilt Project, Quilting Arts Magazines and Calendars, Quilting Arts DVD: Gathering of Leaves as well as several publications and a designer thread-pack line with Sulky of America. She enjoys fabric dying, painting, airbrushing and applying yards of threads by free-motion on her home sewing machine. Her unique works are well “garnished” with unbelievable embellishments from fibers, to ribbons, beads, buttons, ultra suede and even shells. Heidi teaches quilting, surface design, fabric collage, fabric dyeing, embellishment and beading. She lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with her three chocolate spaniels.

Moxie Lieberman
3D Needle Felting ▪ Fri: 2-5 pm Moxie is an artist, fiber pusher, and human being. She enjoys conceptual art, hi-jinx and/or shenanigans, and making wool do impossible things. Needle felting is Moxie's primary medium and it's pretty much all she ever wants to do. Her art has been shown in several books as well as galleries in Seattle, New York and Los Angeles and more. Moxie spent 2012 creating her first large all-wool installation for the Bellevue Art Museum. She's very proud, and still very tired. In 2010 Moxie's book I Felt Awesome was published by f+w. In addition to her book and her online tutorials, she has taught thousands of people to needle felt in dozens of settings, including the Frye Art Museum, The Exploratorium in San Francisco, and the Maker Faire Bay Area. She also runs her own small business, Hi-Fiber Kits, bringing felting and spinning supplies to the people. Moxie spends what free time she has not cleaning up after herself and writing quirky paragraphs about herself in the third person. She lives in Seattle with her unbelievably patient husband and the two best cats in the known universe.

Dynamic Designs For Every Quilt Style Thurs: 10 am-5 pm Kathy McNeil is an internationally award winning quilt artist, teacher, judge and designer. Sewing thousands of little scraps of fabric together by hand, she creates quilts that look like paintings. These wallhangings are inherently and symbolically full of love and comfort. Often using over a hundred different fabrics in one composition, she revels in adding small details and surprises for the viewer to find. Cindy Needham
Open Thread Bar ▪ Thurs: 10 am-5 pm Beginning Machine Quilting ▪ Fri: 9 am-5 pm Heirloom feathers and Backgrounds ▪ Sat: 9 am-5 pm Cindy fell in love with quilting over 40 years ago while her family was stationed in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina and Virginia and is still going strong! Her articles have been published in American Quilter Magazine, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Machine Quilting Unlimited, and more. Her book, Wholecloth Linen Quilts, was published six years ago, and now she selfpublishes her handbooks, which are available on her website. She started teaching quilting in 1996, and has been teaching nationally since 2007. She is honored to have won the Machine Quilting Teacher of the Year Award in 2010. Cindy has been a featured artist at Road to California Quilter's Conference and Showcase. She absolutely loves her job and spending good quality time with her students.
Susan Purney Mark
Layering Colours With Fusibles ▪ Thurs: 10 am-1 pm Thermofax Screen Printing ▪ Thurs: 2-5 pm Since taking her first quilting class over 30 years ago, quilting has been a very important part of Susan's life. Her studies have included intensive design courses in England and Canada, as well as quilting techniques, history, fibre and dyeing workshops. While she works as a teacher, designer and author she also spend time working in different aspects of surface design; dyeing, painting, batik, discharge and silk screening. This field continues to fascinate her as she delves deeper into the variety of techniques and design. She is a co-author and author of several books published by the American Quilter’s Society and Martingale & Co. In 2012 she filmed an instructional DVD titled Soy Wax Inspirations which will soon be available for purchase.

Jeri Oswat
Embellished Presentation Box...Plus Sat: 9 am-12 pm Jeri Oswalt was raised in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. After completing a degree in Clothing and Textiles at Oregon State University and spending a few years in the fashion industry, she took a detour into the business world. She has now come full circle, completing London City and Guilds certificates in Design and Embroidery. She continues her study and works with the group STiTCH. Jeri works primarily in traditional hand stitch on non-traditional surfaces. While an interesting base fabric takes that stitch further, it is always about the stitch. Currently she is focused on working with stitch on fabrics layered in fusible web, paint and images.
Sherry Rogers-Harrison is a lifelong resident of Washington State and has been a Longarm professional quilter since 1995. She began sharing her passion for quilting with others in 1997, teaching her methods both nationally and internationally. She is an international award winning quilter whose work has been published in many books, publications and calendars. Sherry self-published her first book in early 2002 and has since authored three other books. In 2007, she became interested in inked quilts and developed a unique process she calls Ink-Liqué™ which utilizes permanent pigmented inks and pigments combined with wholecloth style quilting. This technique has won her numerous prestigious awards and accolades and is creating quite an interest in the quilting community. Her passion for creativity continues to evolve and she can't wait to inspire you to get your Color On!
Faculty Bios Becky Scellato
Lotus Blossom Table Runner ▪ Sat: 9 am-12 pm Becky's love for Japanese textiles and crafts began in the 1960's when her father was stationed at Kadena AFB, in Okinawa, Japan. Every week a mamasan came to teach the family how to shop in the neighborhood markets and helped them learn to prepare the local dishes. She introduced Becky to Bunka, a Japanese form of punch embroidery. Having learned how to sew at an early age, Becky felt a real excitement at being taught a variety of hand-stitching crafts. Over 15 years ago, she learned Sashiko from a Japanese woman and fell in love with the process. Sashiko is an easy embroidery technique using a running stitch, is relaxing and fun, and creates a sense of peace while stitching. Sashiko is elegance in simplicity.

Linda Tellesbo
Cactus Flower - A Judy Niemeyer Pattern Thurs: 10 am-5 pm Linda Tellesbo is a Judy Niemeyer Quilting Certified Instructor originally from Washington’s Skagit Valley. She began quilting in 1989 with the purchase of a small quilt kit with hearts. Many quilting courses followed that helped to perfect her skills. Over time, her piecing skills led her to the completion of quilt after beautiful quilt. After retiring from Verizon in 2002, Linda began focusing on her quilting skills and purchased an A-1 Longarm Quilting Machine. With the free time that retirement provided, Linda also began piecing more complicated quilt patterns and experimenting with her own wholecloth quilt designs. Within a couple of years, Linda bought a six-needle embroidery machine to embellish her quilting projects and continues to be on the lookout for new challenges.

Thea is originally from Whidbey Island, mother of four and a long time member of the Seattle handmade movement. She started exhibiting in neighborhoods in White Center and West Seattle and has participated in numerous local shows including Urban Craft Uprising, etsyRain and I Heart Rummage. Her work has been featured on TV, fashion blogs, in magazines, and books. A self-taught kanzashi artist since 2002, she brings new life to vintage kimono fabrics. Many mixed media techniques are applied to achieve the unique quality of her flowers; worn by the famous and by her neighbors next door.
Jamie Wallen entered the quilting community in the 90’s with a background in fine arts. After a longarm purchase in the late nineties he began to develop his own unique style of quilting developing a large and loyal community of piecers. In 2004, Jamie began teaching his signature workshops and classes, Mystical Quilting series and Threadfusion. He continues to teach internationally and in 2011 a new studio furthers his art where he films, dyes and teaches workshops in Michigan City.

Sewing machines: Classroom sewing machines will be supplied by Quality Sewing & Vacuum. BSS = Basic Sewing Supplies: notebook, pen, pencil, eraser & sharpener, 18" ruler, paper scissors, fabric scissors, hand needles, thread to match fabric, straight pins, fabric markers (for light & dark fabrics) and thimble. Required Kit and/or Material fees are listed in the class descriptions. These fees are payable (cash preferred or by check, USD) to the instructor at the start of class. For those traveling by air, we have a limited number of small cutting mats, rotary cutters (and other assorted sharp things) available for you to use.
