Basic Sewing Supplies - notebook, pen, pencil, eraser & sharpener, 18" ruler, paper scissors, fabric scissors, straight pins, sewing needle, thread to match fabric, fabric markers (for light & dark fabrics) and thimble. Some classes will need a rotary cutter & mat.
Cancellation Policy There are no refunds for cancelled registrations. Refunds (less the $15 non-refundable registration fee) will be made if there is a wait list and your spot is filled. Unfilled wait list spots are not refundable. You may transfer your registration to another person if you are unable to attend.
Friday 6 hr. Workshops ▪ August 1, 2014 Friday Evening Event - Creative Collaborative Collage with Lyric Kinard
Ready for some fast and frenetic fun with fabric? During this free flowing event participants will be taught a variety of design basics such as color schemes, focal point, proportion, formulas for making a face, etc. while collaboratively creating several 4" x 6" art cards. Expect lots of learning and laughter, a little creative chaos, and the opportunity to make new friends! We'll supply the stabilizer and glue. You bring one quart sized zip-loc bag filled with fabric scraps and a few embellishments to share, one plain/solid(ish) fat quarter to share, scissors, glue stick, hand-sewing needle, all-purpose thread, and a Sharpie. Please preregister for this event!
Animal Totems Helene Knott
Required materials fee: $5 includes embroidery stabilizer, Golden Threads™ tracing paper, fusible web, and animal pattern of choice (Salmon, Bear, Jaguar, Thunderbird, Wolf, Seal or Bird). A totem is a symbol, usually an animal, which serves as an emblem of an individual or group of people to remind them of their ancestry (or mythic past). The process of making this project is similar to making a Mola (Central American reverse appliqué) and incorporates Seminole strip piecing for the body of the image. The appliqué will be fused and by machine. Skill Level: All, Sewing machine needed
Bead-Dazzling Embroidery Interpretations Nancy Eha
Required materials fee: $13 includes all beads, thread, needles, and patterns. Learn how to replicate embroidery stitches with beads. As beads and thread have different physical properties, you will learn the finer points of the conversion process. Fear not, Nancy has developed a foolproof method so that even an absolute beginning beader can be successful! You'll learn beaded variations of the chain stitch, buttonhole, fly, cretan, and how to create beaded berries on fabric. Skill level: All, Hand Class
Beginning Machine Quilting Cindy Needham
This is a fun, no stress workshop where you will be provided with a very solid foundation of good information and instruction on free-motion quilting. Learn how to set up your work space; choosing the correct threads, batting and needles, and how to properly baste your quilt. Spend quality time at your machine obtaining your perfect rhythm and stitch length, learn some great tips on executing different quilting designs, how to safely change your bobbin tension and learn basic guidelines for freeform feathers. Extensive handouts are provided on a CD. Skill Level: Beginner, Sewing machine needed
Elements Of Art For Quilters Lyric Kinard
Kick-start your creativity and learn about the basic elements of good design through a series of short, hands-on exercises. Learn why some colors fizz while others explode, why some quilts calm and some excite. A few simple tools from the artists kit will help you take your work, whether traditional or contemporary, to the next level. Skill Level: All, Design Class
Foil And Paint Sampler Bouquet - Kathy McNeil
Required Materials Fee: $15 includes pattern, a 16" x 6" foil sheet, glue for foiling, 1 neocolor paint crayon, 1 brush, 1 inktense pencil, and fabric medium for inktense pencils. This playful sampler will introduce you to the joys of using several different art mediums to enhance your quilting projects. Fuse your flowers to your pre-made background fabric and then watch the artist in you emerge! In the afternoon we will Foil around with gold embellishments to add sparkle. Kathy will also demonstrate Tsukineko inks, and discharging color from fabrics too. We will finish with a discussion of quilting designs, thread and needle choices. Learn how one easy-to-make quilt block can be used to reap unlimited design possibilities. A WOW for both beginners and experienced quilters alike. Inking Your Fabric - Lura Schwarz Smith

Textile inks have a wonderful range of applications in quiltmaking. For both traditional and innovative uses, from the simplest shading of an appliquéd leaf or petal to detailed color work on human faces, inks can enhance your work and add new, beautiful dimension to your quilts. Learn easy, effective shading and blending techniques in this workshop working from your own photos or drawings, any subject matter, which will allow you to produce images of your choice. Jump Start Your Creativity Barbara Olson
Required Lab Fee: $4 for pattern. This technique is for the quilter that is ready to break out of the box and experience a playful way of creating. Too much thinking or fear often stops quilters from trying new designs and fabrics. A simple flower pattern is the first ingredient, a wide array of wild, powerful and playful novelty fabrics (polka dots, geometrics, florals, etc.) and few solid fabrics is the second ingredient and a willing spirit is the third ingredient. No-Sew Fabric Flowers Michele Byrum
Required Material Fee: $5 includes fabric, and patterns. Discover the process of making appliquéd flowers from a single piece of fabric, all without threading a needle! The focus of this class will be on learning the method of using a "window" to select specific portions of the fabric to create a realistic flower image. Saturday 6 hr. Workshops ▪ August 2, 2014 Saturday Evening Event - Wearable Wonders Challenge
Create something new by reducing, reusing and recycling an item already in your possession. Complete your Wearable Wonders Challenge piece (Hats, Garments, Purses, Jewelry, Accessories) before you come to Symposium. Any construction method is acceptable – gluing, tearing, stitched by hand or machine, hammered, stapled, pinned, etc. And spend no more than ONE hour putting your creation together. Abstract-A-Licious Lyric Kinard
If you’ve looked with hidden longing over an imaginary wall to the world of art quilts but don’t know where to start, this is the class for you. Lyric will gently guide you through simple and concrete design exercises designed to help you create ideas for original abstract quilts. Doodles will be scribbled, eyes and minds will be opened, fun will be had. You will learn the basics of fused collage as you assemble your quilt top. Even students who have never created their own designs before will end the day with at least one small and uniquely original art quilt top. Skill Level: All, Design Class

This workshop is for those who are interested in a more specific look at rendering the human face convincingly in fabric, no matter what your drawing skills may be. Not an art student? Not to worry – we learn successful tracing and basic shading, and using lightboxes, we can all make people that look like real people in our quilts. Some drawing on paper, and some work on fabric. In class time, experience textile inks and markers and produce simple, effective faces on fabric. This workshop provides the tools you need to later customize and use your own photos or drawings of people in your quilts. All skill levels welcome – just bring an "I can do it!" attitude. Linen Ladies - Cindy Needham Join Cindy as she shares her passion in quilting, which is turning ordinary vintage linen tablecloths into fabulous wholecloth linen quilts. The morning is spent learning how to deal with stains and holes, special binding and edging techniques, discussing threads & battings and learning basic designing for wholecloth quilts. The afternoon is spent designing and marking your piece. She will have quilts for fondling and lots of samples. Sewing machines are NOT needed for this class! Painterly Flowers - Barbara Olson
Required Lab Fee: $4 for pattern. Fabric is an up close and tactile way of expressing the creative impulse. Create an imaginary flower by using fabric like a paint brush stroke. The brush stroke can be linier, to direct the eye, or textural, to add shading and depth. A simple flower pattern is the first ingredient. A pleasing combination of fabrics with directional lines and textural effects to create shading is next. A range of lights, mediums, and darks helps add depth to the petals. A few accent fabrics that add highlights and interest completes the design. This flower is only the beginning. This technique can be used in all types of quilt design. Reversible Machine Appliqué: Rock Stars Helene Knott
This is a very simple yet fun and rewarding method of creating double-sided machine appliqué. You will end up with a reversible mini quilt with two identical (though mirror image) sides. For a first time project, starting with a small quilt will allow you to make real progress in class. The project is a tide pool theme and the class handout includes templates of starfish, seaweed and seashells. Skill Level: All, Design class, Sewing machine needed
Single Fabric Flowers - Michele Byrum Required materials fee: $5 includes fabric, patterns, and stabilizer. Michelle will show you how to make beautiful floral appliqué from one piece of fabric. Using a commercial print she will guide you through the process of selecting portions of the fabric to create dimension and color variations in your appliqué motifs. Learn the "window" technique along with needle-turn appliqué to create flowers out of a single piece of fabric. A stabilizer will be used as the foundation for the flower. Slice And Insert Improvisation Katie Pedersen
Join author Katie Pedersen for a full day workshop focusing on the improvisational Slice and Insert piecing technique from her book Quilting Modern: Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts. Learn the basic technique, a foolproof strategy for matching inserts, simple techniques for adding complexity to a design as well as how to work with even width and wedge shaped inserts. Combine simple sewing with a new skill and create your own linear design. Katie will share quilts from the book as well as new designs to inspire you. Doodle Your Way To Better Quilting Cheryl Malkowski
We take out paper and pencils and doodle without any inhibitions. Deciding where to go next is the hardest part of machine quilting. We will explore options for continuous line quilting for backgrounds, all-over patterns, borders and more. Folk Art Embroidery - Helene Knott Required materials fee: $10 includes a master pattern, a preprinted rinse-away working pattern, felt, embroidery floss, beads and sequins, beading thread, and a beading and embroidery needle. Hand embroidery is relaxing and pleasurable; the appeal of decorative hand stitchery is universal the world over. There are many forms of the craft and this project is rooted in the needlecrafts of India and Pakistan. In this class you will learn a variety of stitches that will be used to render a Folk Art motif – either a cat or a peacock. The finished embroidery can be applied to another project – a quilt or wearable art or completed and stuffed to make a charming ornament. Skill Level: All, Hand class
