WELCOME
which guarantees a high quality of education. We have signed cooperation agreements with Gdańsk University, of Technology, University of Gdańsk and the University of Warmia and Mazury concerning cooperation as regards the quality of education and teaching programmes compatibility. The university has implemented the European Credit Transfer System. The PWSZ in Elbląg is a member of the Erasmus+ Programme, which gives our students the opportunity to travel abroad in order to study or complete their placements financed by the European Union. Every year they have both the possibility to study in Spain, Romania, Germany, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Turkey, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania or Slovakia and to complete their student placements in large European Union companies of their choice. For several years now the PWSZ in Elbląg has been accepting foreign students from Spain, Latvia, Hungary, Turkey, Macedonia, Slovakia and Lithuania.
Rector prof. Zbigniew Walczyk, D.Sc., Ph.D., Eng. The State School of Higher Professional Education (PWSZ) in Elbląg is a young higher education institution, but at the same time one of the oldest and biggest ones among the 36 state schools of higher profesionnal education founded in Poland. Our School is the equivalent of German "Fachhochschule", translated into English as "University of Applied Sciences". The American equivalent would be "university college". In Poland, however, the imposed translation is "State School of Higher Professional Education". The PWSZ in Elbląg was established on July 1, 1998. Since its foundation our School has issued 8005 graduation diplomas (6285 diplomas for graduates of full-time programmes, 1720 diplomas for graduates of part-time programmes) and 1643 post-graduate diplomas. Over a quarter of our students originate from rural areas, which three times exceeds the national rate. In this way our vocational university, similarly to nearly all of the vocational universities, prevents young people living in the rural areas from social exclusion, which may result from limited access to higher education. Currently, the PWSZ in Elbląg provides education to almost 3500 students in nine fields of 1st cycle studies (bachelor and engineering), offered by the Institutes of: Applied Informatics, Technology, Pedagogy and Languages, Economics. The study programmes comply with the Polish legislative acts concerning higher education and with the Bologna Process comprising all the countries of the European Higher Education Area. All of the programmes offered by our university have been accredited by The State Accreditation Committee,
The theoretical knowledge acquired by the students at the university is complemented by skills referring to its application during student placements which take place at the best companies in Elbląg. The technical fields of study of our vocational university are traditionally supported by the turbine and foundry plants of Alstom Power Ltd. Our students gain economic and administrative experience in business enterprises and in financial or local government institutions, while the future teachers polish their skills at the schools in Elbląg. Our students also have the opportunity to pursue their scientific, artistic and sports interests by participating in the students’ science associations, the academic choir and numerous sports sections of the Academic Sports Organisation. The graduates of the State School of Higher Professional Education in Elbląg are highly valued by employees. Many establish their own businesses, and those who wish to continue their education are qualified to do so at the second cycle level in all academic institutions in Poland as well as abroad in the European Union countries. The flexibility of the Bologna Process gives them the chance to continue their education in related fields of study. Dear Candidates, you are now making a life decision concerning the choice of a university where you intend to gain qualifications for the profession you have selected. This must be a responsible and well-considered decision. I am convinced that our university is worth choosing from the wide range of educational offers. The high position which is held by the State School of Higher Professional Education in Elbląg is a guarantee that you will not be disappointed. Welcome. 5
ELBLĄG AND REGION Elbląg (Ger. Elbing, Prus. Elbings) – city in WarmiaMazury Voivodship, with the population of 128 thousand, located at the mouth of the Elbląg River close to the Vistula Lagoon. The origins of the city go back to 1237, when the Teutonic Knights erected a castle at the Elbląg River. In 1246 the settlement surrounding the castle was awarded city rights. Elblag is one of the oldest Polish cities with rich history, well documented by archeological research, exceptional on national and European scale. As a result, the Elbląg Museum prides itself in possessing exhibits unique on worldwide scale – e.g. a medieval lift. The Old Town is the part of the city most commonly visited. There, on the foundations of old tenement buildings, new structures emerge, resembling those of the past.
on the verge of Elbląg Upland, with the area of 369 ha, offering numerous walking and cycling paths. Elbląg is visited by musicians, theatrical and comedy artists, which ensures a wide range of entertainment available to everyone. Cafes, bars and discos make the city a place which never goes to sleep
The legend of the baker’s journeyman During the war between Poland and the Teutonic Knights, the latter decided to capture Elbląg, a rich and economically strong town. As legend has it, a young baker’s journeyman used his baker’s spade to cut the rope that held the gate which protected the entrance to the town. In this way, he prevented the town from being seized by the Teutonic Knights.
Thanks to its attractive location – at the border between two different geographical regions: The Vistula Delta and Elbląg Upland – the city is a perfect departure point for trips to the Baltic Sea, the Vistula Lagoon and, for those longing for quiet, beautiful views and contact with nature, to the lakes. Within a few kilometers from Elblag, Raczki Elbląskie village is the lowest point in Poland, with the depression of 1.8 metres below the sea level. Attractions are abundant in Elbląg itself. The Old Town, constantly being restored, holds the visitors’ attention with its charm and the note of mysteriousness stirred up by the walls from the 13th century, unearthed by the archeologists. A place to visit is the Market Gate, which used to be part of the city walls, whose foundations were erected in 1319. Now the Gate is a place from which a magnificent view can be seen of Elbląg and its surroundings. One of the most interesting places in Elblag include a forest park Bażantarnia, located 7
Tourist attractions Elbląg – the longest sailable canal in Poland. It is 83.3 km long and runs through two geographical regions: the Vistula Delta and and Iława Lake District. The Elbląg Canal is the only in Europe system of inclines, which was built in order to enable vessels to clear a 100m water level difference on the distance of 10km. A European rarity is the system of five inclines, where ships are placed on carriages which run on rails. If you are planning an unusual adventure on board of a ship which travels not only on water but also on grass, Elbląg is the place to visit.
Malbork – famous for one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe built by the Order of the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary's Hospital in Jerusalem. Since 1997 Malbork Castle has been listed as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The monumental fortress is only 30km from Elbląg and can easily be reached by car, bus or train.
Frombork – a town situated on a few hills on Warmia Plain at the Vistula Lagoon. The main tourist attractions of the town are the following: The Cathedral Hill with the 16th century cathedral, 17th century Radziejowski’s Tower with a viewing terrace and Planetarium. Tourists are attracted to Frombork by famous organ concerts, attended by renowned musicians. Frombork is also an international sea border crossing to Russia.
