Publisher’s note... Dear Readers, My Magical Myanmar is proud to announce the arrival of our new monthly format, which launched this month in both print and digital formats. From September onwards, we’ve decided to break with our usual style – for the better. In our Snapshots section, we’ve highlighted the Nat worship – a tradition of spirit veneration unique to Myanmar. For the athletically-minded, there’s a story about trekking in Shan State’s dramatic Pindaya Region. In September’s issue, you’ll be able to experience a trip by train from Myitkyina in Kachin State to Mandalay, and, if you’re so inclined, try your hand at making delicious traditional recipes. Best of all, we’ve highlighted a truly incredible photo essay by the YAT photography group that showcases life of copper hunters in Monywa, a place that has become increasingly difficult to visit in recent years. This issue is all about action verbs. Myanmar is an adventure, and a place that pushes you to enjoy new experiences and explore unusual places. The magazine is packed with up-to-date and hip lifestyle and tourism information, featuring comprehensive guides to hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and markets. Every month, we’ll strive to provide our readers with exciting stories about culture, nightlife, destinations, and activities, paired with striking photography that highlights the beautiful destinations Myanmar has to offer. My Magical Myanmar’s mission is to help travelers experience the fascinating cultures and unique traditions of Myanmar, to share this country’s stories, to explore its varied landscape, and to explore the history and customs of Myanmar from the inside out. My Magical Myanmar caters to a clientele that is both foreign and local, and is widely distributed at hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, cafes and bookshops. For readers who prefer going paperless, we offer a digital version, as well. We distribute locally throughout Myanmar to reach the world’s most sophisticated travelers. Next month, we’re all about food, both traditional and cutting-edge. We’ll look at Myanmar’s national cuisines, offer up our editors’ top restaurant picks, and provide mouth-watering menus for our readers to prepare at home. Stay tuned, and keep supporting us!

Sincerely,

History The Lokanat BuildinG

T

By Shwe Yinn Mar Oo

he Lokanat Building, in the centre of downtown Yangon at the corner of Merchant and Pansodan roads, is an exemplar of the city’s heritage architecture. With one of Yangon’s earliest contemporary art galleries on the first floor and flourishing Italian architecture throughout, it is a symbol of Yangon’s cosmopolitan past. It was built in the early 1900s by Isaac Sofaer, a Jewish trader from Baghdad. Originally known as Sofaer’s Building, it housed businesses such as the China Mutual Life Insurance Co., and Reuters Telegram Co., Ltd., famous photographer Philip Klier’s souvenir shop and retail outlets which sold products from Britain. After Issac Sofaer died it was bought by a family of Indian Surti traders who owned the building across the road (formerly known as Rander House) and its name was changed to the Randeria Building. After World War II, it housed many government offices, including those of the Forestry Department, Sugar Project Board and Ministry of Industry (1). The Lokanat Art Gallery was founded in 1971 by a collective of prominent artists and remains one of the city’s top art galleries. The renowned artist, Paw Oo Thet, spent his time in a small room at the gal-

lery until he died in 1993. Today the building highlights one of the challenges facing almost all of Yangon’s heritage buildings: a complexity of owners, including government ministries. A web of owners is a major constraint for building preservation and renovation. Due to its strategic location, the ground floor of the building is devoted to commercial activities and houses a branch of Kanbawza Bank, Gekko restaurant and bar, Myanhouse souvenir shop and also a teashop. The back entrance on 37th street provides access to a small publishing house on the ground floor and a small guest house on the first floor. The block of Pansodan Street between Merchant and Strand roads features some of the city’s grandest examples of heritage architecture and one of the finest is the limestone-coloured Lokanat Building.

Tribes THe Kayah BY Noe Noe Aung

T

he Kayah are one of Myanmar’s main races. The are 134 national races by official count, of which the eight major races are the Bamar, Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. According to history, the Kayah people were once included in the Kayin ethnic group. During the colonial era, they were known as the Karenni ethnic group, or Red Karen, because of the colour of their clothes. In 1951, the Karenni homeland and its people were given a new name – Kayah. There are nine Kayah sub-groups and each its slightly different. Kayah men dress their hair with a white head-scarf and wear red trousers and open-fronted jackets. Kayah women dress their hair with a red head-scarf and wear sleeveless red or black dresses with a red or black shawl. The women also wear heavy silver earrings, thick silver bracelets and silver hairpins, and beads around their legs. The Kayah people believe they are descended from legendary half-human, halfbird creatures known as Kinnara (male) or Kinnayi (female). As religious people deeply rooted in their beliefs and culture, they deeply revere their traditions and have their own festivals and dances. The Kayah people worship Nats (spirits) and Buddhism.

Religion Nats

M

BY Noe Noe Aung

yanmar has multiple religious and cultural belief systems, including Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism, as well as an indigenous form of animistic and polytheistic worship involving spirits known as Nats. Official figures show that more than 80 percent of the population are Theravada Buddhists. However, many of the country’s ethnic groups practice Theravada Buddhism in conjunction with Nat worship, involving the propitiation of spirits who can intercede in worldly affairs. Although Nat beliefs differ throughout Myanmar, some are universal. There is an official pantheon of 37 Nats, most of whom are believed to be the spirits of humans who died violently and, unable to accept their fate, have been caught in a limbo between life and death. Worshippers rely on the intercession of spirit mediums to request favours from Nats. Ceremonies to honour the Nats are held when the favour has been granted. Each Nat provides help for a specific purpose, including the protection of cattle, farmland, households, children and women abandoned by husbands and lovers. One of September’s Nat festivals honours and celebrates a protector against danger and enemies known as Bo Bo Gyi.

Festivals By Noe Noe Aung

Boe Boe Gyi Nat Festival Taungthaman Lake, Mandalay (September 21 – October 3)

T Yadana Gu nat (spirit) festival Amarapura, Mandalay (September 1 – 13)

T

he Yadana Gu Nat Festival is also known as Mother of Taung Byone festival. One of the reasons why this event is enjoyable is the necessity of travelling to the festival site by boat. The festival is held each year to honour Medaw, Mewanna, the goddess mother of Mt. Popa. This event is held immediately after the Taung Byone Festival, near Mandalay, which attracts thousands of mediums and devotees who pay homage to the power of

nats. Every year, the festival starts on the 10th day after full moon day of the Myanmar month of Wagaung and lasts about five days. The Yadana Gu Pagoda festival and Yadana Gu nat festival are held simultaneously. During the festivals, boats carrying offerings and filled with dancers and musicians perform in homage to the nats ply the Ayeyarwady River near Mandalay and Amarapura. Most of the pilgrims are from Mandalay, Amarapura, Tada Oo, Sagaing and Monywa.

he Bo Bo Gyi nat festival is one of Myanmar’s famous annual festivals and runs for 12 days. Bo Bo Gyi, also known as Myin Phyu Shin, is one of 37 spirits in the nat pantheon which predates Buddhism but has long been integrated into indigenous religious belief. The ritual of offering food to the spirit is the main event of this festival. Bo Bo Gyi is known as the Rider of the White Horse and is a poltergeist who provides protection from danger and enemies. On the eve of the festival, devotees throw packets of tea leaves at each other. Those who are hit must pledge to attend the following year’s festival. The celebrations start at the entrance to the village, on the altar of Myin Hpyu Shin Bo Bo Gyi. In accordance with custom, villagers prepare five sets of trays, each with seven vegetables and seven pieces of pork. The offerings must be carefully arranged and include steamed rice, tri-coloured glutinous rice and rice formed into animal-shaped cakes. Other staples are pumpkin, coconut, banana, dried fish and fried chilies, garnished with tea leaves and betel nut. The main feature is the pork, which is served on its own or minced into porridge. Offering pork to Bo Bo Gyi is a unique feature of the event because offerings of pork are taboo at other nat festivals. The Bo Bo Gyi festival is also unique for being alcohol-free: alcohol is regarded as an essential offering to the nats at other festivals. Devotees at the Bo Bo Gyi festival do not sing or dance. They simply cook together, worship together and enjoy the food offerings with friends, family, relatives, and pilgrims visiting from other areas. The participants believe that they will enjoy health, happiness and good luck.

October 2015 Indein Pagoda festival, Inle Lake (October 14 - 17)

This Buddhist ceremony is held at an ancient pagoda on Inle Lake.

This festival usually begins one day before the full moon day of Thadingyut and its focus is a huge Buddha image carved from a block of marble. The festival coincides with an annual competition among teams of cane-ball (chinlon) players.

This national festival marks the end of Buddhist Lent and is one of the biggest festivals on the Buddhist calendar. People light candles around their houses and in the streets and homes are decorated with colourful lights. Pagodas, houses, public buildings, parks, and monuments are all illuminated and there are various activities for everyone to enjoy.

Four of the Hpaung Daw Oo Pagoda’s five Buddha images are carried on a golden barge to spend the night at villages around Inle Lake. Their arrival at the villages is greeted with ceremonies and rejoicing. Thousands of people from communities around the lake and villages in the surrounding mountains carry offerings of fruit and flowers on lacquer trays in boats and pay homage as the holy barge passes. Teams of the lake’s famous leg-rowers compete in annual boat races.

EXPOSURE The Copper Hunters of Monywa By YAT Group

In the Salingyi Township of the Sagain Region, around 200 households from four villages once hunted for copper at the now closed Letpadaung Copper Mine. The Letpadaung Copper Mine was a large surface mine that recently received a lot of international backlash when news about its possible human rights abuses and illegal breaches of economic sanctions incited local protests and police violence. Local residents, many of whom worked at the copper mine to earn approximately K10,000 ($7.80) per 2.6 kg of distilled copper, were forcibly evicted from their homes and exposed to hazardous materials. These photographs were taken in 2013 prior to the closure of Letpadaung Copper Mine.

Kempinski Hotel Nay Pyi Taw by

isaac malone

S

wiss luxury hotel chain Kempinski is banking on the national capital emerging as a popular tourism destination and opened the Kempinski Hotel Nay Pyi Taw in November 2014 in an agreement with the Kanbawza Group of Companies. The 141-room property, which includes 35 suites in three exclusive villas, occupies spacious grounds in the southeast of Nay Pyi Taw. Facilities include a state-of the art gym, swimming pool and a range of conference rooms. The late-night Diplomatic Bar offers a selection of Myanmar-inspired cocktails and the ‘Rangoon Kitchen’ restaurant serves European fare with an Asian twist. The hotel’s managing director, Franck Droin, takes pride in a menu designed to satisfy both western and Myanmar diners. The large buffet breakfast, with its selection of noodles, mohingya, western-style

breakfasts and cheese and bread selections, is a welcome start to the day. The smartly-designed rooms offer pleasant views of the manicured gardens and feature spacious bathrooms and free Wi-Fi access. The beds, sumptuous and inviting, ensure that guests can drift away and relax during their Nay Pyi Taw visit. Mr Droin said the hotel places particular emphasis on staff training and this is evident the minute you arrive at the reception area, its design inspired by the Konbaung Dynasty: smiles abound as you make your way to your room. The hotel could not have opened with a more high-profile visitor when US President Barack Obama stayed in its aptly-named Presidential Suite during his visit to Nay Pyi Taw in November 2014 to attend an ASEAN summit. The Presidential Suite includes a spacious meeting room featuring traditional

The rooms are well designed. They include pleasant views of the manicured gardens, spacious and modern bathrooms and free Wi-Fi access. The beds, sumptuous and inviting, are easy places to drift away and relax during your Nay Pyi Taw visit.

Myanmar décor, a lavishly-appointed bedroom and a private swimming pool, gym and spa. “To have President Obama stay with us was a very good opening for us,” said Mr Droin. Although Nay Pyi Taw has struggled to attract high visitor numbers since it was unveiled as the national capital in 2006, Mr Droin believes that the city will become an increasingly popular destination. “The aim is to create more awareness for people to come,” Mr Droin said. “Nay Pyi Taw is five times the size of Berlin; there are 4,000 hotel rooms, there is a shopping mall, a zoo, and there are museums and parks. But there is a perception of Nay Pyi Taw not being open to the world. I have lived here for one year and I have to say that more and more people are coming,” he said. The government has prioritised Nay

Pyi Taw as a MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination and the city has two big convention centres. The Kempinski has also hosted big, high-profile events. They have included an eco-tourism conference and events held during the ASEAN Tourism Forum earlier this year. “There is space, there are no transportation issues, the service and food are good, and the hotels and the airport are fine as well. So there is a lot of leverage there,” Mr Droin said, referring to the city’s potential as a MICE destination. He also believes that being within easy reach of popular tourist destinations such as Bagan and Inle Lake will attract visitors keen to see Nay Pyi Taw’s unique attractions. Apart from its massive parliament and government buildings, the city’s attractions include a zoo where animals have

better conditions than many other zoos in Southeast East, the National Gem Museum, many parks and the Uppatasanti Pagoda. The government recently opened the parliament to a select number of visitors. “Many Myanmar people like to travel and see new places, and Nay Pyi Taw is definitely a place where not a lot of people visit,” Mr Droin said, referring to the city’s growth potential as a destination. “The parliament building also, it showcases the Myanmar government, and I think this is very interesting for tourists, as well as for an educational purpose, of what Myanmar is with regards to moving forwards.” Kempinski is planning to open a hotel on Yangon’s Strand Road in the near future, but Mr Droin said the company is not interested in opening at many destinations. “We believe that luxury is limited, so in Myanmar we will have two hotels, maybe three, but not 20,” he said.

36 | In focus >>> restaurant review: La Carovano

The Second Child of Ching By Daniel Alexander Roca

F

or those not familiar with the culinary enterprises of Ivan Pun’s PUN+Projects, La Carovano is its latest foray into the world of contemporary fine dining. Led by chef Kevin Ching, a baseball-cap-wearing, pan-Pacific cuisinier known for globally tweeted breakout restaurant/food truck/Saturday afternoon beer-garden and Port Autonomy, La Carovano is one of Yangon’s must-stop foodie destinations. This second child of Ching, La Carovano, is distinctly unlike his older, established brother. Where Port Autonomy is comfortable with its tattered edges – its lack of walls, air conditioning, cushions and viable water drainage seems to perfectly coincide with the snappy and amalgamated food served on tinny enamelware – La Carovano wants to distinguish itself as the demure member of the family. If Port Autonomy is the place to spend a lazy afternoon watching geese squawk while

They reigned until the country was colonised by the British in 1885, and the last king, King Thibaw, was exiled.

getting boozy on ladles of rum punch, La Carovano is where you go to roll up your sleeves and wax hypothetical while forking tiny nibblets of risotto. It works. But it’s difficult. These sibling roles are reversed. La Carovano should be the older brother – wise and established in his maturity of palette and tradition. Port Autonomy is the young, plucky upstart who walks into a board room wearing a pair of Vans, trying to set himself apart from the task of carrying on the family name. But that’s not the way this family panned out. The dynamics are reversed. And now La Carovano has the arduous task of reeling in the recklessness and spontaneity of his older brother by providing patrons with a sense that there is firm hand at the helm of this ship, while embracing a quality and flair that still says, “Yes, I am of the same family.” In case you’re wondering where that flair is, it’s in the food. The menu ventures away from the ec-

centric East-meets-West fusion of his brother and explores the cuisine of the Mediterranean. Rustic and familiar, the dishes satisfy your appetite with flavours that warm the heart rather than shock the system. And while the fare is traditional, Chef Kevin has managed to retain that vibrant and bombastic panache that we long for in his food. The Hamachi Crudo, served on a smeared bed of avocado and garnished with micro greens, flower petals and (of course) salmon roe, enters the palette lightly before punching in with its flavour; the smoothness of the avocado spread provides a subtly sweet foundation that melts with the hamachi while the tiny marbles of roe act as self-contained splashes of salty-sweet. It’s not overly whimsical. Its exact and well timed, a dish that needs to be consumed in modest, conscientious bites to fully appreciate the chemistry of what’s taking place. Similarly, the Grilled Radicchio is a whirling dervish of texture, colour and

flavour. Buttermilk, blue cheese, sunflower sprouts, and (yet again) salmon roe, all work together to bring a crunchy, sharply bitter structure that is laced with enough sweetness to make you wonder why you enjoyed it. But you did, and you are going to try another bite to find out why. Other dishes, such as the Zucchini Carpaccio, Seafood Risotto, and Rigatoni with Lamb Bolognese, all bring elements of what is familiar—homey, soul-warming plates that skirt the line between something old and something new. The Porchetta, which I consider to be highlight of the menu, is quite simply a one-plate American Thanksgiving. Creamy, buttery mashed potato embellishes what is already a savoury and fatty mouthful of home. Again, the garnish of rocket and gremolata (a chopped mix of lemon zest, garlic, and parsley) bring contrast to the body of the crackled pork. All of this is built around a selection of equally robust side dishes, such as fresh

corn polenta with feta, sautéed carrots with cumin, yogurt, and za’atar, and potato with Iberico ham and (once more) salmon roe. A plentitude of bruschetta and mezza options also grace the menu, adding to the idea that food around this table is not meant to be the one punch highlights of La Carovano’s hip older brother. Rather, this food is meant to be shared, to bring life to a company of people who know that good food stimulates good conversation. It seems that this second child of Ching understands that his arrival constitutes the beginning of a family, and as such has embodied an atmosphere that welcomes the experience of exactly that: family. It’s relaxed yet attentive, garnering enough maturity to command respect while asking you to leave stuffiness and pretence at the door. Though everything about it feels elevated, the food itself has the playfulness and wit that seems to be in the genetic makeup of Chef Kevin’s food.

Mote Lin Ma Yar Coupled Dough Cake By Noe Noe Aung

M

ote Lin Ma Yar (coupled dough cake) is a traditional snack. You can see it on sale throughout Yangon. In common with most traditional snacks, Mote Lin Ma Yar is reasonably priced and has a great taste. It’s a real treat and best to eat while still warm. It is made from rice flour, water, sugar, baking soda, salt and garnished with boiled beans, eggs and salted sesame powder.

A new Trekking destination Written By: CLiff lonsdale Photos By: Robert TylEr

T

he sound of rain on the roof accompanies a cacophony of snores coming from the dozen or so men around me on the floor of this monastery. I snuggle further into my sleeping bag, mummified to the extent that only my nose peeks out, uncovered. I’m still cold, but it’s a nice kind of cold. Despite the temperature, the hardness of the floor and the symphony of unsynchronised apnoea, I’m tired enough to know that nothing will prevent me from relishing the fatigued sleep of someone who has completed a decent day’s walking. Early this morning we set off under clear, blue skies on our two-day trek from the small town of Pindaya. Our group, a gaggle of foreign trekkers of varying ages and levels of fitness and a small army of enthusiastic local guides, dutifully follow the energetic and enigmatic U Doh Soe Min (or Mr Doh as he is better known) like children being led by the Pied Piper. He’s excited and sets off at a cracking pace, proud to show us the twenty new trails in the region that he has spent months mapping. I struggle to keep up as he describes the variety of routes he’s been developing. The trail we are on is not one of the more technically different routes, but I discover that it is far from being an easy half-day stroll. Within the first half-hour my knees begin to complain. It occurs to me that I don’t do that much walking anymore, not

proper walking. I might potter around a market or take the dog for an evening stroll, but in my hectic life of meetings, schedules and sedentary work, I rarely have time to walk and I certainly never go walking for the sake of it. If you are inclined to enjoy the luxury of stretching the old legs once in a while, then you are fortunate that Myanmar is blessed with a plethora of pathways, and trekking fans have long flocked to the Shan hills to ply the tracks and trails from and around Kalaw and Hsipaw. These well-established tourist routes have consistently provided great pleasure to hikers from all over the world. They offer a splendid stroll, if a not particularly challenging one. However, these trekking routes are in danger of becoming spoiled by their own success; in the height of the tourist season the Kalaw-to-Inle Lake trail often becomes a long queue of people wearing drip dry clothing or ethically-made ethnic leisurewear – a well-organised, wellequipped, slow-moving odyssey. The Danu Self-administered Zone in Shan State is between Inle Lake and Mandalay, and comprises the townships of Ywangan and Pindaya (site of the famous Shwe Oo Min caves, and a place where tourists often stop off as they travel through the area on their way to or from Nyaung Shwe or Kalaw). The trek I am on is one of the new trails developed by the Danu Literature, Culture and Development Association with support from the Myanmar Institute for Integrated De-

velopment. It is hoped these new trails will encourage more people to visit the area for more than a day. We wind our way uphill on a dirt road for an hour, before Mr Doh darts into the trees without warning. Following him through the gap we find ourselves at the bottom of a steep staircase that disappears into the thickets high above; it appears that our ascent starts here, that last bit was clearly just a warm up. We stumble our way up the uneven, red clay steps and because I am concentrating on keeping my footing, I am unable properly take in my surroundings. Although the steady narrative of entomological and botanical facts from the guides keeps me up to date on what I am missing, my focus remains firmly fixed on the ground. Leaves are plucked and their uses explained, wild fruits gathered and distributed. The guides are keeping themselves busy and are keen to impress. They even collect litter along the way. As we reach the top of the steps, a light drizzle begins. The snippets of information and chatter dry up. Silently we each find our own pace, a comfortable speed through which we can settle into our reveries. Our group stretches out along the trail, each person with a little space to call their own, a place to be comfortable. As the compacted red soil of the path begins to shine, slicked wet with the fine rain, our shoes start to slip and we are forced to slow down. Unable to remove my eyes from the path for fear of foolishly fall-

ing, I occasionally pause to catch my breath, marvel at the scenery around me and snap a photo or step aside to allow elderly, slipper-wearing village women to overtake me like wiry mountain goats. We skirt the edges of tea plantations, the smiles of waving tea pickers greeting us. We occasionally venture into the fields or work our way around large rock formations precariously close to the edge. Our journey follows a path stomped into the landscape over the centuries by countless pairs of feet. Occasionally through the trees I catch glimpses of the valley far below and the mountains high above. Then the path veers back through the lush green curtain of foliage, its dark tunnels hiding one another from those in front and behind. Sheltering from the rain at a tea factory, I watch women fastidiously sorting the leaves through a giant mechanical sieve. They barely acknowledge my presence. The harsh flash of my camera momentarily freezes their labour into a frame, but it doesn’t do justice to the effort involved in the process. I feel awkward at the intrusion and wonder how I would react if a stranger appeared in my office and took a few snaps of me sitting at my computer. At another village further up into the hills we are treated to a lunchtime feast – as we are at every meal – and devour our curries and rice in silent enthusiasm. Replete, we stretch and rub our calves, sip

hot, bitter tea from delicate porcelain bowls, and gaze into the hills as women pick tea just below the cloud line. We encounter few men in the tea plantations; many of them are away working in mines. “Good money, but dangerous work,” one of the women said. After several hours of steady uphill walking, we reach the clouds at a plateau and sprawl on the wet grass to catch our breath, the bells around the necks of nearby beasts playing a soothing and mysterious overture. Before we can get too comfortable, Mr Doh drives us onwards. “Not far to go,” he promises. We follow him, splashing through shallow streams, squelching across muddy fords. I am already wet and dirty so I don’t care. In fact, the change in texture of the ground feels wonderful on my tired feet. The word “leeches” is whispered back along the line and I instantly search my uncovered legs for unwanted passengers, racking my memory to remember what is was you were supposed to do if you found one. Do you use salt, or is that slugs? Thankfully, I am leech free. We drop back below the clouds and arrive at our night stop, Yasagyi. Inquisitive children shyly welcome the foreign visitors and we respectfully and gratefully remove our boots at a monastery before being granted an audience with the abbot. This involves more warming green tea. The clouds seem to have followed us and the dramatic scenery of waterfalls and mountains

quickly disappears as the weak light from the sun is filtered through the fog. A sepia tinge is cast upon our mountain refuge, turning it into an old faded photograph. Eventually the sun gives up, leaving an eerie darkness that descends as swiftly as the temperature. We make ourselves comfortable on the floor of a candle-lit hut, the air warmed by steaming bowls of rice and curry. After emptying them, we retire to our sleeping mats. The next morning, suitably fed and watered, I stretch my stiff muscles and make the necessary sound effects one must during such an activity. The sun takes the chill out of my bones and I feel ready for action. The guides are crafting rudimentary walking poles from stout lengths of bamboo, their

tips sharpened at one end. This is a strong indication that the second day’s walking will be tough. Nobody refuses the offered assistance, even those like myself who would normally shun such things as an unnecessary accessory. They turn out to be essential. When the first of our party slips onto their backside I stifle a laugh. When the second person hits the dirt, some of us might have tittered under our breath. But as the members of our party were picked off one by one as if by a hidden sniper, we each knew that it was only a matter of time before it would be our turn to join the muddy red bottom of shame club on this steep and slippery downhill walk. I was the fourth to join the club, and also the eighth and eleventh, if you are counting.

We survive the descent of the mountain intact, and in good spirits compare our wet-bottom trophies before finishing our walk to the blue lake (which as the name suggests is blue. Perhaps ‘lake’ is an exaggeration, as it is more of a pool. But is most definitely blue). What a marvellous place to finish. The lake is that exact shade of blue that it absolutely shouldn’t be; a blue that only appears in computer-edited travel brochures of idyllic beaches or in wickedly dangerous cocktails. It is a shade that no one can describe with any justice, a water so clear you could watch streams of bubbles chasing each other to the surface as they passed through a criss-cross frame of submerged skeleton trees. We couldn’t get too close the lake, be-

cause of a tatty barbed-wire fence that kept us mere mortals out of the water. This is a sacred lake and a home to spirits, but it was a stunningly special and peaceful place to visit and a truly magical spot to end our trip. Tired, dirty and happy we return to Pindaya by minibus. Long, hot showers and ice-cold beers help us reflect on our adventure. Discussing our trip, we all agreed that trekking in the Danu Self-administered Zone is an exceptional and exciting addition to the trekking options in Myanmar, and one we would all recommend. Mandalay to Myitkyina by train: unadorned Myanmar at its beautiful best by Connor Macdonald

I

sat on the rickety Mandalay-Myitkyina train for almost two whole cycles of the sun, bumping over twisted tracks with the ever-present feeling that I would be involved in the slowest derailment in history. The 643-kilometre (400-mile) journey to the Kachin State capital in Myanmar’s far north was a chaotic 37-hour ordeal, replete with shouting tradesmen, stomping hordes of rifle-toting police and long, sweaty waits at provincial stations. I loved every minute. We left Mandalay station two hours later than scheduled and soon began carving our way through condensed suburbia; living rooms filled with families watching TV, people laying down and fanning themselves in the balmy night, parents preparing their children for bed; all very bucolic. I was dozing when the train stopped at Sagaing

station. Suddenly the night erupted with the sound of authoritative barks, stomping boots and the clunk of ammunition boxes being loaded onto the train. Thirty stone-faced police officers with rifles boarded. For five minutes, the carriage was in chaos as the company of police shuffled around finding their seats, pushing past passengers. “Oh, sorry,” muttered one officer. He barged past me and nudged my face with the butt of his rifle. I kept locking eyes with another young officer sitting opposite me; my attempts at defusing smiles were met with a louder, more concentrated chewing of betel. It was a long, strange night. I was tired though, so I managed to sleep. When I woke, the train had stopped. Looking at Google maps, I confirmed that we had been there all night.

The police were all less menacing now – in white singlets, their uniforms and helmets hanging by the windows. One bounced a chubby-faced baby on his knee. My first attempt at venturing off the carriage for food was a failure. A packed teashop erupted in laughter when I tried to buy samosas. I retreated to the safety of the carriage, dignity in tatters. Moments later I bought a chicken curry from a woman walking by my window with a kiosk on her head. As I devoured its contents, an officer placed some more chicken into my container, then came a spoon of ngapi, a pungent fermented fish paste, from another – a combination of pity and that trademark Burmese generosity. Over the next 12 hours the train crawled through the dry central plains – peanut farms scattered among palm trees baking under an unrelenting tropospheric white haze. Later, we squeezed through tunnels of jungle cut only by the regular course of the train and rolled into innumerable small town stations where banyan trees taller than five-storey buildings shaded us from the afternoon sun. The train would inexplicably stop at these towns for hours. Spending unsolicited hours at these idyllic country sidings with my new police family, I couldn’t help but appreciate my surroundings in places I otherwise would have missed. It was while sitting under a huge banyan at Maw Luu when a friendly young man wearing a stone cross around his neck struck up a conversation. He was a Baptist pastor from the ‘black area’ of Kachin State returning from a convention in Nay Pyi Taw. The ‘black area’ is a no-go zone for foreigners controlled by the Kachin Independence Army, one of several armed ethnic groups in Myanmar. I asked him about life hundreds of kilometres north of Myitkyina. “People don’t have much money but everyone helps each other out,” he said. “This is people from the village helping me build my new kitchen, almost finished now,” he said, showing a photo of the

ed in laughter. “I need to bring Bibles and computers to the schools.” Pastor Paul* and I talked for a few hours on the wooden seats of the ordinary class carriage. Several times the train hit a kink in the track and the carriage was launched about 20cm (eight inches) into the air, all of us thrown like rag dolls. Even the most solemn senior police officer couldn’t help but laugh. In 2013, a consortium of foreign investors

expressed interest in upgrading the railway from Yangon to Myitkyina. They wanted to start with the line between Mandalay and Myitkyina, reducing travel time to a mere eight hours, and the idea remains in the pipeline. The Mandalay-Myitkyina line opened in 1885, capping off a period of rapid expansion of the national rail network by the British. Since then it appears not much has changed. Steam trains

have been replaced by equally slow diesel locomotives. The tracks are spared much of the attention they need and receive only the most essential maintenance. In the early evening we rattled across fertile plains, flanked by towering blue mountain ridges on both sides, a ceiling of pink denoting the slow close of the day. Countless rows of women, hunched over, laboriously planted seedlings in the mud of recently flooded paddy fields. They always stood, turned and waved as we passed. Men ploughing fields with buffalo, big cheroot cigars clenched between their teeth and deep in concentration, acknowledged our passing with a glance and a puff of smoke. I was standing in the doorway admiring the beauty of landscape when it dawned on me that the trajectory of the train was emblematic of the country as a whole. One day it will be sleek and efficient, devoid of kinks in the track and unsolicited rests at little country towns. Suddenly a man appeared from nowhere selling ice-cold beer from a bag. As I was making the transaction, the carriage jolted and we were both launched into the air almost as if the train was reacting to my ruminations. At that moment I was glad that “necessary developments” were still “in the pipeline”. Early the next morning, two days after leaving Mandalay, we rolled into a mist-shrounded Myitkyina. I had been confused when the man at the ticket booth in Mandalay had warned me that the train ride was “very slow, yes, very slow”, as if I was mistakenly under the impression I was about to board the Myanmar equivalent of a Shinkansen bullet train. Now I understood. I said farewell to the family of upper class carriage two, now back in their police colours. I saw Pastor Paul on the platform and we vowed to keep in touch. Then I checked into a hotel for a well-earned rest. For the return journey, I decided I’d buy a ticket on the 24-hour “express”.

*Pastor Paul is not his real name.

Finding peace in a still and focussed mind By Tom Lambert

W

ai Lun Wun monastery in Bago offers a rich and accessible experience for newcomers to explore meditation, Buddhism and the role of monastic institutions in Myanmar communities. For the fourth time in a minute I shift awkwardly, trying to find a position that would relieve the striking pain that’s running up my spine. My concentration flutters between the tension in my lower back, the blazing heat of the summer sun, and what I’m supposed to be focused on: my breathing. During the Thingyan holiday last April, I discovered that meditation wasn’t as easy as I naively thought it might be. Meditation retreats can be an intimidating experience. Many monasteries in Myanmar are simply unwilling to admit foreigners. Those that do often offer courses with regulations such as fasting from 12pm, to waking at 3am, and even remaining silent for the duration of the course. For those unfamiliar with monastery life, these regulations make the monastic experience unappealing; often, prohibitively so. Moreover, my peers who have ventured out to monasteries have often returned to share strife as strict boundaries are enforced to instill discipline. Some recount that constant introspection led to emotional turmoil. Wai Lun Wun monastery has relaxed some of its rules to encourage those new to its practices as part of a more modern and accepting Buddhist philosophy. Escaping the frenzy of Yangon for the Thingyan holiday, the monastery’s verdant grounds and clean air stood in stark contrast to the aridity of Bago Division and even more so with congested Yangon. Rows of blossoming trees line the road to the monastery entrance where impressive works of carpentry depicting “Hinthas”, the provincial symbol of Bago Region, are presented under an overarching Banyan tree. Novice monks come bounding up to me with fresh batches of jasmine, picked from one of the four gardens. The monastery has stood on these grounds for 185 years, and in 2004 the Venerable Dr Ashin Pyinnyawbhatha become its head monk. “We blend old traditions with new ideas and methods,” he explained, and emphasises that his mobile phone, the cars and the speedy Wi-Fi, enhance the ability of the staff to serve the community and better enable visitors, such as me, to be exposed to Buddhism. It’s 6pm as I’m shown my dorm and the light slides across the dusty grounds, illuminating the dark wood of a shack that is to be my home for

the week. It’s certainly a modest outfit; just fine for me and Bhikku Gunavera, a monk from India who lives in the Mon State capital, Mawlamyine. Dr Pyinnyawbhatha thought it would be fitting for an experienced, English-speaking monk to guide me through the meditation process. Sympathetic to my inexperience, Bhikkhu Gunavera explained that forcing meditation in any sense would likely be counterproductive. Although certainly encouraged to meditate, I found the lengthy sessions were troublesome, often tying myself up in psychological knots. On his advice, my hours were reduced and I began to experience some improvement in concentration. Instead of rising at 3am, I was rising with

the sun at 5:30am for breakfast – a much more agreeable time that ensured that I wouldn’t resemble a character from Dawn of the Dead for the rest of the day. I was also pleased to find that at Wai Lun Wun, a minority of visitors was eating a small meal about 5pm. Needless to say, I joined them. It’s easy to scoff at the adaptations that Wai Lun Wun has made, claiming that this isn’t “the real thing”. But as I sat down to chat with Dr Pyinnyawbhatha, it became clear that his view was to concentrate on the fundamental precepts while making adaptations to encourage new visitors. He explained that visitors would often respond by being able to meditate for longer and with a higher degree of concentration with these adaptations.

It also became clear that this monastery was serving the communities that depend on it for vital services. Community With the growth of “engaged Buddhism” (a socially and environmentally aware iteration of the religion) in mind, I saw this institution as a clear example of how the trust between community and monastery has been leveraged to fill the significant gap left by the government. “We receive neither government nor NGO funding. Individual donors keep us going as our work is essential for the communities we serve,” Dr Pyinnyawbhatha said. And it certainly is just that – essential. The monastery’s vast resources are in sharp

mymagicalmyanmar.com >>> September 2015

contrast with Kyauk Tan: the adjacent village with little in the way of amenities, an hour from the nearest city, Bago. Each Saturday, the purpose-built clinic treats hundreds of villagers and the monastery’s ambulance takes those needing further attention to hospitals in Bago or Yangon. Attendance at the school has increased by 150 percent during the past decade, providing free education for many of the poorest families in the area. The monastery’s role in the community is symptomatic of the crippling underfunding of social services that has resulted in established religious institutions shouldering community needs. Budget allocations to health, education and social welfare have been between 8-9 percent of

departures >>> finding peace in a still and focussed mind | 59

total government spending since 2012-13, which is low in international terms. The result is that essential services are often provided by third parties, usually with religious affiliations: a truth seldom admitted by the governing authorities. “We appreciate our ecosystem,” Dr Pyinnyawbhatha said. The monastery leadership discourages waste and has co-ordinated growing its own food organically on site. The design of the monastery ensures that anyone in its compound is never more than twenty yards from the nearest recycling bin. In the mornings more than a hundred young students trawl through the site in competition, collecting as much discarded rubbish they can find, recycling whatever possible and disposing of the rest.

Dr Pyinnyawbhatha’s embrace of modernity may initially seem to diverge from the conventional image of a monk’s austere existence, but under closer scrutiny, the necessity and benefits to society of his modernisation are apparent. As I try to sit upright, embracing stillness of mind and body and feeling the recurring distractions of discomfort crawling into my thoughts, I also realise its benefit as a teaching tool for the inquisitive visitor. Wai Lun Wun cannot be recommended enough. For those who are deterred by the rigid discipline of some monastic regulations in Myanmar, this monastery also offers a more palatable option for seeking the soothing comfor t of a still and focussed mind.

usic bursts from the entrance of the Sky Bistro at the top of Sakura Tower. Past the smokers congregated in the corridor and the two young women stamping wrists at the entrance, the entrance to Sky Bistro offers a view of the downtown Yangon skyline pierced by the spires of golden pagodas and coloured by neon lighting beyond the images of party guests reflected in its windows like bodies floating in the night. Inside, guests mingle in small groups. Some enjoy the music; others order drinks from the bar and watch the dancing crowd. A woman dressed in black stands behind the DJ booth, with her hair pushed behind her ears by a large pair of headphones. She bobs along with the music. Yu Kyaw Tin, also known as DJ Yu, was first exposed to mixing music while studying in Britain for a bachelor’s

degree in business management. She left for Britain after high school and returned to Myanmar in September 2013. “I think I made the right decision,” Yu said in an interview, referring to her decision to come home when the economic and political transition was underway. Being a woman DJ in Myanmar has its advantages, Yu said. “There are not many female DJs around who play the same of style of music as mine,” she said. “I learnt the basics of mixing about two years ago and my style of music widened over the years. You are less exposed to a variety of music here and this is why you need to give yourself more time to find your music and keep yourself updated.” As the beat grows louder, the crowd thickens. A steady stream of guests joins the gyrating crowd on the dance floor, each exploring their response to the pulsing beat.

It’s amazing how much music can inspire people to feel and dance. It’s not a bad feeling to be on the other side of the booth now and you get to make the crowd smile.

“It’s amazing how much music can inspire people to feel and dance. It’s not a bad feeling to be on the other side of the booth now and get to make the crowd smile,” said Yu. One of her first public performances in Yangon was at the TS.1 Gallery launch after-party at Gekko Bar in April 2014. Yu says one event was a turning point in her career as a professional DJ. It was a rooftop party at the Alfa Hotel in December 2014 and many of the guests ran bars. They were impressed by her mix and approached her to play at their venues. “I have been quite lucky with my bookings ever since then,” she said. “A lot of doors opened up for me.” Her bookings have risen from six in 2014 to more than 24 last year. Yu’s style is a mix of different genres, from minimal, Nu disco and techno to deep house, tech house and progressive house. “I would like to become a much more advanced DJ on stage and learn to use other technical tools when I am mixing,” she said. “I prepare my sets according the event, the location and the crowd. It depends on the kind of event at which I am performing. But I always aim to uplift the vibe in the room during my sets and bring the dancer out in everyone.” Yu’s DJ career is facing some obstacles, including the recent bar curfew and a relatively small number of bars and clubs in which to perform. ”We are lacking a variety of venues,” Yu said. “The venues here are limited in terms of space and capacity and the variety of events hosted. I would like to think the scene is moving forward, and the au-

dience definitely seems to have an open mind. But the current social scene seems to have taken a step back because of the restrictions.” The curfew in Yangon that has bars and clubs shutting their doors at 11pm has had an impact on bookings. “I’ve been getting fewer gigs since the curfew but I am still very happy with the number times I play out,” she said. “I am getting more bookings for corporate events lately. I think overall it [the curfew] just somewhat killed the vibe of Yangon’s nightlife. I doubt the curfew will be lifted anytime soon.” Her biggest challenge, though, is juggling her career as a DJ and her full-time job as marketing manager for PUN+Projects. “I have some evenings during the week to play around on my decks at home, but I would like to devote more time to it,” Yu said. “It can consume a lot of your time because you are always trying to learn more. I would eventually like to learn to produce but I do not have enough time at the moment.” Yu is undaunted by the challenges she faces. Her drive to develop her style and ability stems from a love of music that inspires her to keep moving forward and contribute to change and growth in Yangon’s nightlife scene. “I think being a DJ is easy as long as you have the passion and the ear for it,” Yu said. “I don’t think I need a reason or motivation to be a DJ; it’s self-motivated,” she said, adding that the nightlife scene needs more women DJ with real passion. “Most DJs want to be in the scene for the popularity rather than the love.”
