Dear Pygmies, I have designed you a new kayak which is showcased on page two. It includes our new side cutaway technology and was fun to design and even more fun to test paddle and prepare for sale. For you paddlers that like hard-chine kayaks, give it a look. Last year I wrote you a letter titled “A Love of Public Lands”. The center spread in this year’s catalog is again an article from me about wild lands (see page 14). When I was little, I like most kids, loved to be outdoors and was hard to call back inside. My dad started taking me on float trips when I was five. He got me a pair of chest waders when I was six. Gave me a fly tying rig when I was 9 which I totally got into. My dad quit fishing in 1953 when I was 11 because there were too many people on his favorite float streams and the native fish stocks were depleted. By the time I was in my twenties I had stopped fishing for everything except sunfish caught on a fly rod and carp shot with a bow and arrow. I became an expert cook of both species and Sunnies and carp were still plentiful and happy. But my ultimate response to degrading waterways and proliferating “No Trespassing” signs, was to buy a kayak. And in 1969 I took off by myself on a two and a half month kayak trip down the Yukon River. I saw only two other boats on the river and zero “No Trespassing” signs on the entire trip. I have been heading back into the far north ever since. But…. This too will not last. This year’s letter is much more personal despite the fact that it is filled with statistics. These numbers are the only way I know to tell you the truth of how my world has changed. It was personally painful to write. I try to tell a chronological story, to start with the natural world and lay out the chain of cause and effect to where we are now. I end at what I see is our present catch point, the place we are stuck. It is a sad, dark tale with all the characteristics of a Greek tragedy filled with greed and blindness within our epoch’s chosen method of survival. I’m sorry, I did my best, I don’t know how to tell the story of where we are at and how I feel about it in another way. My hopes are to inspire recognition of the problem. Paddlers are people who appreciate wild lands and so I hope that we can initiate the change required. John Lockwood President, Pygmy Boats Inc.

NEW! RONAN 155 PRO

New! Ronan 155 Pro 15’6” LENGTH | 22.6” BEAM | 11.5” DEPTH | ONLY 34 LB

Innovative Deck Design: Like the popular Ronan design, this new kayak design features a hard-chined hull. The major differ-

ence between the Pro and the original lies in the length and the application of Pygmy’s patent pending paddle cutouts. These side paddle cutaways were first introduced recently with the Pinguino 150 Pro (see page 4). They cutaway the sheer line to allow the paddler a much closer, more efficient paddle stroke without any knuckle banging. Paddlers have enjoyed the cutaways so much

2

that after introducing the Pinguino 150 Pro, it quickly became our most popular kayak. The cutaways give the new Ronan 155 Pro the stability of a 23” beam, but it paddles like a 21” svelte kayak.

A Versatile Design: The Ronan 155 Pro is 15” longer than the original

(15’6” vs. 14’3”), with the same raked bow and stern that give the original Ronan its lovely sweeping lines. This longer length is the perfect crossover size for those looking for a fun, maneuverable kayak for playful paddling without sacrificing the storage capacity for some light touring. The new Ronan 155 Pro is an excellent choice for someone who wants both a lightweight day paddler yet hopes to do some light touring without the need for a second kayak.

Comparing Designs: Like the Pinguino 150 Pro the Ronan 155 Pro has a higher, drier rear cockpit height. It is a little less suited to rolling than the original Ronan, but the paddler experiences a drier and more ergonomic ride for exercise, day paddling and touring. The new Ronan 155 Pro and the original Ronan share the same height at the front of the cockpit (11.5”) but the Pro does offer more space around the knees (8.75” vs. 9.9” height). Due to its longer length, the new Ronan Pro offers a little more initial stability than the original. With the Ronan Pro the paddler can choose between two cockpit sizes, the 17”x33” or the smaller 15.8”x33”.

OUR MOST POPULAR KITS

THE PINGUINO SERIES For eight years now the Pinguinos have been our most popular kits. The width and extra-large cockpit of the Pinguino 145 and Pinguino Sport puts them in the “recreational” class and they can both handle 300 lb. paddlers. The smaller cockpits of the Pinguino Pro and the Pinguino 145-4PD are great for smaller paddlers or people who want a snugger fit in a wider, more stable kayak.

Pinguino 150 Pro: 15’ Length | 23.7” Beam | 11.5” Depth | 34 lb | 17”x36” or 15.8”x33” Cockpit The Pinguino 150 Pro’s new patented paddle cutouts have reduced the sheer line width of the kayak by three inches. This allows a recreational kayaker to take a much closer, more efficient paddle stroke without banging their knuckles on the edge of the deck. You get the initial stability of a 24” wide kayak with the paddle stroke of a 22” kayak. At 15’, its length is a crossover between a recreational and a touring kayak, giving it the perfect balance of top end speed, hull efficiency and paddle ergonomics. The Pinguino 150 Pro is great for all-around recreational use as well as fitness paddling or light touring. (See Photo at Left)

Pinguino 145-4PD: 14’6” Length | 25.5” Beam | 11.5” Depth | 36 lb | 17”x 33” Cockpit The Pinguino 145-4PD has the same hull as the Pinguino 145. This gives her the same stability and offers the same advantages at cruising speeds with less frictional drag than longer boats. She features the more paddle efficient fore deck and the lower rear cockpit height of our other new kayaks. Her front deck design cuts the side deck panels away to allow a closer, more comfortable and efficient paddle stroke, while giving her more knee height. Her smaller arched cockpit and much lower rear cockpit height makes for a snugger fit and easier execution of Greenlandstyle layback rolls. She fits shorter, lighter people better than the taller Pinguino 145. She’s great for light touring, and like her sisters, the Pinguino Sport and Pinguino 145, she performs well in surf and rock-garden paddling.

PINGUINO SERIES 6

Photo: Ken in a Pinguino Sport on Admiralty Inlet with Mount Baker in the background.

Sea Kayaker Magazine Review “The Pinguino hits the mark dead-on, a recreational-style kayak for the home builder. It is perfectly suited for photography or bird watching and its stable behavior made it confidence-inspiring, fun, and easy to paddle.” (TE, 6’1”, 200 lbs)

WoodenBoat Magazine Review “The Pinguino 145’s stability makes it an ideal platform for fishing, photography, and relaxed outings... It’s a well-mannered design with a respectable cruising speed and a good amount of cargo space for carrying several days’ worth of camping and cooking supplies. Its near-sister, the Pinguino 145-4PD, has a smaller cockpit that allows for rolling and advanced control.”

www.PygmyBoats.com | 360.385.6143

19”x 36” Cockpit or 17”x 33” Cockpit The Pinguino Sport (shown in photo at left) is a great choice for paddlers who want who want light weight, stability, a shorter length and a giant cockpit. Her shorter length and light weight make cartopping and carrying to the water a cinch. The Pinguino Sport’s size also makes her an excellent choice for stowing on the deck of a larger boat for day paddling from a “mothership”. Though the Pinguino Sport is a recreational kayak at heart, she has the soul of a sea kayak, so don’t be afraid to take her out in the surf (in April 2009 Canoe & Kayak Magazine called her, “One of the best wave performers of the surf sessions.”). Due to her shorter waterline length she’s the most maneuverable of all the Pinguinos but as such has the least amount of storage and is also the lowest top speed.

Pinguino 145: 14’6” Length | 25.5” Beam | 13” Depth | 36 lb | 19”x 36” Cockpit The stability and large cockpit opening of the Pinguino 145 make her an excellent choice for fishing, photography, bird-watching, or a relaxing day on the water. Folks with stiffer knees enjoy the ease of entry. At 14.5’ her chief advantage is the fact she has less wetted surface and less frictional drag than longer boats, and paddles with less effort at speeds below four miles per hour. She’s more stable with more knee height and foot room than any of our other touring boats, except the Borealis XL. She tracks solidly, but thanks to her shorter length is quick to turn. Great for light touring as well. Before the introduction of the Pinguino 155 Pro, this was our best selling kayak for 7 consecutive years.

SELKIE

Selkie 14’ Length • 22.5” Beam • 9.75” Depth • 29 lb The Selkie takes two of our most popular boats (the Arctic Tern 14, page12, and the Murrelet, page 8) and marries them into an elegant, light weight boat that petite women love. John Lockwood nailed his first static brace in its sea trials and found it extremely easy to roll with its dramatically low rear cockpit it’s even lower than the Murrelet.

Petite Women Rejoice:

Selkie

Petite paddlers love the snug fit and lower volume deck for higher angle paddle strokes. Like the original Greenlandic sealskin kayaks the Selkie is hard-chined. At 14’ x 22.5” it’s a great boat for petite women or for larger paddlers who want a snug-fitting, low volume kayak to play in the surf (up to men’s size 9.5, or up to size 11 in aqua socks). The Selkie features a low sheer line with the Murrelet-style, cutaway side deck panels that allow more body rotation. A number of small women have already expressed their joy at finally having a low volume boat that fits! Since her introduction she has been paddled by many women ranging from 4’9” to 5’4” who were thrilled that they finally had a boat designed specifically for them and that is lightweight enough for them to car top.

14’3” Length • 23” Beam • 11.5” Depth • 32 lb The Ronan is a more spacious version of the Selkie. Many of our taller customers would stare enviously at the Selkie’s sweeping lines and low rear cockpit height before trying to cram their long legs and large feet into her snug fitting front deck. For these paddlers we’ve created the Ronan. While 3” longer than the Arctic Tern 14, the underwater hull of both the Selkie and the Ronan are identical to our ever-popular Arctic Tern 14, giving them the same efficiency in cruising speed due to low wetted surface area. Like the Selkie, the Ronan features upswept ends with a low sheer line and sloping side deck panels, which allows more body rotation and a more efficient use of a Greenland paddle. The major difference between it and the Selkie is its higher hull sheer height and larger cockpit, which allow larger paddlers the space needed for ease of entry and exit (up to men’s size 10.5, or up to size 12 with aqua socks). The Ronan’s front cockpit height is 11.5” while the Selkie is 9.75”. The rear cockpit height on the Ronan comes in at 7.25” while the Selkie sits at 6.21”. Its dramatically low rear cockpit height makes layback rolls effortless. This kayak is designed for playful paddling in dynamic water. Experienced paddlers will love this low volume beauty in dynamic water, surf or as a lightweight day paddler.

ARCTIC TERN 14

Arctic Tern 14 14’ Length • 23” Beam • 11” Depth • 32 lb In response to a request from Michael Powers, Tsunami Ranger and kayaker extraordinaire, John designed the Arctic Tern 14. Michael wanted a smaller, more maneuverable kayak that he could take into the rock gardens and sea caves along the coast of Oregon. By 2002 the Arctic Tern 14 became our second best selling sea kayak as she became a popular boat to take into the surf and rock gardens along the entire west coast. The boat’s hard chines and shorter length make her very responsive to leaned turns, an ideal characteristic for playing in the surf zone. Her recessed cockpit makes executing rolls and braces in rough water easier. Although the Arctic Tern 14 was designed with advanced paddlers in mind, the end result was much more. Teens and smaller adults relish the fact that there is a touring boat just their size. Her lower wetted surface gives her a cruising speed advantage over longer boats and makes keeping pace with larger, stronger paddlers in longer boats a pleasure, not a chore. The Arctic Tern 14 is ideal for paddlers 4’10” up to 6’ with shoe size up to men’s 10.5. At 32 pounds and 14 feet, she is extremely easy to car top. The Arctic Tern 14’s hull has been used for inspiration in our newer models, the Ronan and the Selkie.

AT-14

Reviews in Sea Kayaker Magazine “The Arctic Tern 14 is a godsend for smaller boaters. Its shallow cockpit design, nimble handling, and light weight are coupled with straight tracking and good speed. This boat is fun to paddle, and an excellent choice for smaller paddlers who can make their own boat.”

10

“So light to lift. Every time I hefted it, I was thrilled by how easy it was to shoulder carry...This boat puts a solo carry within the ability of paddlers for whom it was previously not possible.”

Voted “BEST KAYAK KIT” Winner of top honors in Sea

Kayaker Magazine’s Readers Choice Awards, the Arctic Tern was voted in 2005—hands down—the best kit kayak on the market. Her classic Greenland lines, raked bow and stern, and the sweeping curves of the multi-chine cambered deck combine to make her one of the most beautiful medium volume touring kayaks available. When you want to alter course quickly, lean over on her hard chines and cut fast, graceful turns. The Arctic Tern handles rough seas beautifully and will be your best friend on big crossings. And who wants a boat good for touring only? At 39 pounds, the Arctic Tern is a light delight on day trips or lunch hour workouts, too. Arctic Tern Hi 17’ Length • 23” Beam • 13.5” Depth • 42 Lb. A deeper version of the same award winning boat for people with big feet or more camping gear. If you have a shoe size larger than men’s 12 or want more knee and foot room, or if you like to take everything but the kitchen sink, this is the boat for you.

Reviews in Sea Kayaker Magazine

“I really loved this kayak. The hull design is top-notch, it combines superb rough-water handling, good tracking and turning, and outstanding surfing ability for a touring kayak. A great choice for beginners interested in learning good technique and edge control.” – K W (6’1”, 200 lb male) “I really enjoyed my time with this boat, and I was loathe to give it back. It handles well and one could use it for day paddling, long trips, and even local racing.” (HE) “The Arctic Tern is a pretty boat with nice handling characteristics. It is a good general-purpose cruiser that would carry ample gear for camping.” (TE)

MURRELET 2PD & 4PD

Our Most Popular Touring Kayak!

The Murrelet is a 17 foot multi-chine hull made for those who like

4PD

a high-performance kayak. At 22 inches wide she is thin and sleek, but retains very comfortable initial stability. She executes leaned turns beautifully and is very well behaved in wind and waves. Though this kayak is designed with the Greenland roll in mind, this is a great performance touring kayak for intermediate kayakers or novices looking to expand their skill set. Customize your Murrelet by choosing which hull version, cockpit size and deck configuration is right for you: 1. Choose Your Hull: Hull version one tracks strongly while hull version two is our most maneuverable touring kayak. If you are looking for a play-boat to use in currents, rock gardens or surf, or want a short boat feel in a 17- foot sea kayak, hull version two is for you. If you are looking for an exercise boat or a touring boat, you may want hull version one (it’s one of our strongest tracking kayaks). Both versions roll beautifully, track well and are sleek and fast. 2. Choose Your Cockpit Size: The 15.8”x 33” cockpit has a snugger fit, while the 17”x 33” is for those that appreciate a little more wiggle room. 3. Choose Your Deck: The Murrelet 4PD (“Four panel rear deck”, shown in photo) has the most storage space, making this the best choice for people seeking the performance of a Greenland-inspired kayak with the option to tour. Height at Front of Cockpit: 12” | Knee Height: 10.1” | Rear Cockpit Height: 7.9” | The Murrelet 2PD (“Two panel rear deck”) has the lowest rear deck height for Greenland style rolling. Height at Front of Cockpit: 12” | Knee Height: 10.1” | Rear Cockpit Height: 7.5”

2PD

Review in Sea Kayaker Magazine “The Murrelet is a great kayak for Greenland-style rolling, and yet has some stowage advantages for long trips. I loved the light weight for car-topping and enjoyed paddling and showing off this wooden beauty. It’s stable enough for athletic beginners, and a playful, rough-water rolling machine for the experts.”

The Freya represents a three-year collaborative design between John Lockwood (owner and designer of Pygmy Boats) and his daughter, Freya. The idea hatched at a paddling symposium when Dubside, a world-renowned kayak roller, suggested Freya take her rolling skills to the National Greenland Kayaking Competition. She and John accepted the challenge. Four prototypes later they felt they had achieved the perfect rolling kayak. The full Greenland story can be read (and viewed) on our website. In brief, both she and the boat performed beautifully in Greenland and held the highest rolling score of any male or female present at the 2015 competition.

Freya

FREYA

Freya 16’4” Length • 19.63” Beam • 9.91” Depth • 28 lb

Designed to Roll: The Freya is intended for advanced paddlers who want to further develop their rolling skills, or who desire a very

maneuverable kayak. With her extremely cutaway back deck, laybacks are a cinch. The hull and decks were redesigned to make forward finishing hand rolls easier. The hull rocker was pushed further than any of our other designs to create a playful hull for dynamic water. This kayak is not intended for the beginner or the larger paddler. It was designed for a smaller-framed paddler with narrow hips and will accommodate up to a size 11 men’s shoe (US), depending on ankle flexibility.

Freya Fennwood, Highest Scorer in the 2015 National Greenland Rolling Competition “The Freya is by far the easiest rolling kayak I have ever been in. She fits like an extension of my body. I knew my Dad could design it if I could describe what I wanted. The end result is a kayak I know so well and am so confident in that I can concentrate on having fun in gnarly paddling situations like in the surf or tidal rapids.”

A Ground Breaking Assessment of All Life on Earth reports

60% of All Mammals are COWS & PIGS - 36% are HUMANS - Only 4% are Surviving WILD Mammals “All living things were not made for man” Alfred Wallace, 1869 “Let me be taken care of in the simple ways a wild place offers: a few fish, or crabs, snails, clams, limpets, rabbits, berries, and greens. Let me take lightly from a place that still has abundance. Give me the moods of the wind, the rain. Let me sleep in the sun. Let me use my body and I am ecstatic. It never fails. The wilderness offers me these gifts.” John Lockwood, Pygmy catalog 1998 A Groundbreaking assessment of all life on Earth reports that “The world’s 7.6 billion people represent just 0.01% of all living things. Yet since the dawn of civilization, humanity has caused the loss of 83% of all wild mammals and half of plants.” Agriculture and livestock grazing has had a devastating impact on life on earth. 70% of all birdlife on earth are now chickens and domestic foul. 60% of all mammals are cows

14

and pigs, 36% are humans, 4% is all that is left of all wild mammals. “Civilized” man has terraformed the globe removing 50% of all terrestrial plant life”, while “The total biomass of crops cultivated by humans is estimated at only ≈2%“. Plants account for 82% of all life on the planet and this 50% loss represents a massive reduction in the bio productivity of the entire earth (form The Biomass distribution on Earth, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, May 21, 2018, goo.gl/jZZAoB It is not an exaggeration to say that in next 200 to 500 years we will have killed every living thing on the planet that is not for sale. Everything that can’t be sold will be removed and replaced with something that can be. And every bug that eats our crops, every animal that has the nerve to eat the grass that “belongs” to our cows, and anything else that reduces the market value of “our” biosphere will be killed.

Our oldest positively dated Homo Sapien ancestors lived 300,000 years ago. For 290,000 years (97% of our life on earth) we lived an ecologically sustainable lifestyle in cultures based on sharing gathered food and on community support. In 10,000 BCE we had a world population of 1 to 5 million people. Since then, the human population has exploded to 7.6 billion, adding an astounding+ 6.6 billion people to the planet in just the last 218 years! I was 31 years old when the 1973 Endangered Species Act was passed by a vote of 355 to 4 and celebrated by none other than arch-conservative Richard Nixon for protecting “an irreplaceable part of our natural heritage-threatened wildlife.” This consensus lasted for just 17 years--until Ronald “GREED-IS-GOOD” Reagan went on a binge of deregulation and welfare for the rich that drove wealth to the top 1%. Reagan chose the infamous James Watts to be Secretary of the Interior, who opened up federal lands to clear-cutting, ranching, mining and other commercial development. Watts set a record for listing the fewest number of new species under the Endangered Species Act. Forty-five years after its passage, Donald Trump is gutting the endangered species act again and has stripped 2,008,124 acres from Bear’s Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments for cattle, coal, uranium and oil and gas (see Pygmy’s last catalog’s My Love of Public Lands). Both Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump gave massive tax cuts to the rich, believing in the “magic hand of the market” despite over 3,500 years of repeated market collapse in the historic record. Their faith remains unshaken despite the simple logic that uncontrolled markets will catch and sell the last fish in the sea as its rarity raises its price. Don’t doubt this; remember

15

we killed 85 million buffalo and 5.5 billion passenger pigeons - the most numerous bird that has ever lived on earth is now extinct and they are part of the statistics presented here. We humans have lived on earth for 290,000 years. We hunted and gathered plants and animals that were genetically adapted to survive in the deserts, forests and grasslands where we lived. We used the best food storage technique that has ever been invented - which was to leave our food alive on the hoof or in the ground. Our economy was based on sharing. We worked only 18 to 22 hours a week on all subsistence related activity, had the same percentage of people over the age of 65 as Europe did in 1870, and we were taller and in better health than those who replaced us in the early Neolithic era (after the domestication of a few plants and animals). I was taught in grade school that before the arrival of human civilization life was short and a constant struggle for survival. That, and pretty much everything else I was taught about history, culture and economics, was an ethnocentric lie. The problems we face now are global in scope; how can we expect them to be solved by leaders of industry and government who celebrate greed and are so focused on individual wealth and status that they will kill every non-monetized living thing on the planet to get it? While these are hard truths to swallow, I’m not of the belief that there is nothing we can do. Such a belief rejects at least 290,000 years of human experience. Believing that your ancestors were miserable for 97% of our history is inaccurate. Believing that civilization is

16

www.PygmyBoats.com | 360.385.6143

wonderful belies that fact that most of us can’t sing or dance or tell jokes anywhere near as well as the Pygmies. Believing that humans have reached a new and elevated level of consciousness is an absurd conceit that requires us to be blind to the alienation of industrial life and to what we have done to the planet. According to Forbes Magazine, March of 2018, the 2008 billionaires around the world have $9.1 trillion dollars of personal wealth. That is more than the wealth of bottom 50% of the planet’s population. The top five by rank, country and number of billionaires are: 1.China (819), 2.USA (585), 3.India (131), 4.Germany (114) and 5.Russia (96). But the 3 richest men in the world are all American and they also have a combined wealth, which is more than that of the bottom 50% for their fellow Americans. The US and Russia are the most economically un-equal countries in the industrialized world. The richest 400 people in the United States have a combined wealth of $2.7 trillion. Many of these men have gotten mega rich off cheap foreign labor by outsourcing their jobs. Many of the corporations they own pay little or no taxes. Think Apple, the worlds first trillion dollar company, which manufactures nothing in the US. Or Qualcomm, one of Apple’s few US suppliers, who also has outsourced all of their manufacturing overseas. Apple holds $252 billion in profits offshore, where it can avoid paying U.S. taxes. Reversing our destruction of wild animal and plant life on the planet and the mass changes we have made to the chemistry of the earth’s atmosphere, oceans, and soils will take trillions of dollars.

But it is obviously easier and cheaper than making a paradise out of Mars that has no atmosphere, no oceans and no soil. Such are the grandiose pipe-dreams of Jeff Bezos, the richest man on Earth, who barely pays any federal income tax at all (See online article “Jeff Bezos is A Genius At Not Paying Taxes”). Taxes are important. Any country whose health and welfare depends on the charity of the super-rich is in deep trouble. We cannot depend on the enterprise or the “magic hand” of the rich to save the planet. Conversely we can count on the corporations they own to eliminate or skirt tax law, anti-trust law, environmental law, lobby law, campaign finance law, inheritance law…. etc. Although trained in anthropology and computer science, I became a dedicated student of the American economy starting thirty-six years ago when I was in my early forties. In my opinion a good place for us to start saving the planet is by passing the Accountable Capitalism Act that Elizabeth Warren introduced in congress on Wed 15 Aug 2018. Under this legislation, large corporations would be required to not just consider the financial interests of shareholders but also those of their employees, customers, and the cities and towns where those corporations operate. A group of academics studying the economics and history of corporations, led by the Cornell University law professor Robert Hockett, endorsed Warren’s bill. I join them in endorsing Warren’s Accountable Capitalism Act. We must come together as a body politic. We must elect men and women who will spend our tax dollars on the health and welfare of our fellow citizens and the planet, instead of welfare-for-the-rich and bombs and bellicose posturing. VOTE. TAIGA CANOE

The Taiga out for a paddle on Lake Whatcom, Bellingham. Cane Canoe Back Rest Accessory: $54.00

18

www.PygmyBoats.com | 360.385.6143

Taiga Wilderness Tripper 17’ Length • 35” Beam • 13” Depth • 60 lb

We named our canoe, the Taiga (Tie·guh) after the great north woods, where some of the largest tracts of wilderness remain. This area is sprinkled with lakes and rivers of all sizes. Retreating glaciers left behind some of the finest wilderness paddling in North America.

Taiga

Lines of Tradition: Designer John Lockwood studied countless traditional canoes

during the development stages. With few exceptions, original tripper canoes had symmetrical hulls with recurved ends and tumblehome sides. The Taiga is the first stitch and glue canoe kit that incorporates this traditional tripper canoe design. If you would like a classic canoe that will take you from your busy life to quiet solitude, build yourself a Taiga. She was designed for extended wilderness travel. She tracks nicely and displays good manners in a wide variety of conditions. Her light weight and balance will be appreciated on portage trails. Stealthy efficiency make the Taiga an excellent choice for bird watching, fishing and day paddling as well. You will fall in love with the grace with which the Taiga plies the water. She has beautiful ash gunwales and thwarts with classy wicker seats. Her recurved bow and stern and tumblehome are characteristics that have been lost in mass-produced plastic and fiberglass boats due to the difficulty of pulling them off molds. This is not the case when you build the beautiful Taiga from precision pre-cut panels. Sawyer Voyager Canoe Paddle (shown at left): $139.99

TAIGA CANOE

Review in Canoe & Kayak Mag. “The finished product draws admiring stares from passersby and it handles well on the water, too... Final stability is outstanding. In strong wind and waves, the hull felt reassuring and secure. The hull has significant rise at both ends, so it maneuvers well, although it will also hold a course... It glides nicely and turns well on calm water... We also loaded 420 pounds into it, which did not even begin to approach its safe loading limits... At 65 pounds, the boat is remarkably light for a wood canoe.”

rated Coho has been making waves since her introduction in 1997. Comfortable and versatile at 17’6” long with a 23” beam, the Coho has plenty of volume for paddling expeditions. At 40 lb, its light weight also makes it a great choice for day paddles, or a quick paddle in the evening after work. The Coho features a multi-chine hull design for great paddling efficiency. The moderately-rockered keel makes the Coho responsive when turning without sacrificing tracking ability. Coho Hi 17’6 Length • 23” Beam • 13.5” Depth • 42 lb We have taken our highly rated Coho design and added an additional 1.5” keel to deck height to accommodate paddlers with larger shoe sizes and longer legs. The Coho Hi’s additional 1.5” of deck height is great for shoe sizes larger than a men’s 12 or for those looking for a higher volume touring kayak so they can take it all with them on paddling expeditions.

“Paddle to Seattle”: Josh and J.J. paddled their Cohos 1,300 miles down the inside passage.

Coho

Coho Hi Reader’s Choice Awards, Sea Kayaker Magazine- Voted “Best Wooden Kayak” ”The Coho has been on the market for 14 years and hasn’t lost any of its appeal. When we reviewed the Coho in 1998, it drew high praise from a 5’2” woman and a 6’2” man alike. The 17’6” by 23” kit kayak weights only 39 pounds, making it easy for smaller paddlers to carry. For our reviewers the Coho was ‘beautifully responsive’ and ‘tracked quite well.’ One put it ‘on the top of my list for an expedition-style kayak,’ and another rated it ‘my hands-down favorite of all the boats I have reviewed. I would recommend it to anyone.’ Varnished wood and light weight always make a good first impression but only performance on the water could give the Coho its longevity.” - Sea Kayaker Magazine, November 2011-2014

Borealis XL

The Borealis XL design complements our line of multi-chine hull shapes combining the raked stern and sweeping sheer line of a Greenland style boat with the performance and beauty of our famous multi-chine kayaks.

Perfect for Big Paddlers: The Borealis XL is a high-volume solo touring kayak suited for paddlers weighing 230lb-350lb. At 17’, with a 25.5” beam, 13” deck height, and an extra large 19” x 36” cockpit, the Borealis provides the volume, stability, and ease of entry that bigger paddlers need.

Stable and Comfortable: Originally designed for heavier paddlers, we were surprised to discover what a pleasure the Borealis is for some paddlers with long legs and large feet (up to size 15 men’s shoe). Her wider beam makes it more spacious and increases stability for a more relaxed feeling on the water. The roomier cockpit and 13” deck height makes it easier for long legs to enter and exit and allows the knees to be bent more. Pygmy’s signature cambered decks cut away the sheer, enabling paddlers to maintain a high paddle angle and ergonomic stroke despite her extra width. For paddlers who want to take her in dynamic water she can be fitted with our keyhole knee braces for a locked in fit. The Borealis is also available with our smaller, standard 17” x 33” size cockpit.

BOREALIS XL

Borealis XL 17’ Length • 25.5” Beam • 13” Depth • 43 lb

Reviews in Sea Kayaker Magazine “The Borealis XL “ is really the big guy’s dream: a quality kit touring kayak that combines a grand size with great looks and good handling.”(TW) “Despite the wide beam it was quite easy to push along at 4 knots.”(MK). “Ample storage for long trips is a high point of the Borealis XL. Extra goodies and all the luxuries of home can fit in the grand compartments.”(TW). “The extra-large cockpit is heaven on earth....The foredeck is canted and doesn’t interfere with high-angle paddle strokes... For a kayak large enough to accommodate larger paddlers, the Borealis is light enough for an easy solo carry” (MK).

OSPREY DOUBLE / TRIPLE

Osprey Double 20’ Length • 30” Beam • 13.5” Depth • 60 lb Like the Osprey Std. hull, the Double and Triple are multi-chined and efficient. Weighing only 60 pounds, the Osprey Double is a pleasure to paddle, and easy to load on and off a car. The Osprey Double has excellent primary and secondary stability. Even in big water, her 30” beam holds you steady. You can load this hull full of gear and large adults. Volume is the true weight limit. The Osprey Double is light, elegant and eminently seaworthy.

Osp-Dbl

Osprey Triple 20’ Length • 30” Beam • 13.5” Depth • 62 lb John took our Osprey Double and fashioned a 3-cockpit version. Otherwise, the hulls are identical. She’s quick, easy to handle, and a versatile craft as well. A child or two, a large dog, or a mountain of camping gear can sit in the center cockpit while two adults paddle the boat from the fore and aft positions. The Osprey Triple can also function as a solo kayak—simply paddle the boat from the middle cockpit. This enables you to center your weight for a balanced paddle, with the hull in good trim. When looking for a boat in which the whole family will feel comfortable and secure, consider building an Osprey Double or Triple.

It is beautiful, rugged and versatile. It’s a pleasure to build. I have no previous boat building experience and very little woodworking experience. Phone support was excellent.” 12-29-2009, bbonnen It is totally a gorgeous dream boat. It’s wonderful that it is so light -- super easy to put on the car compared to our old canoe. Mine came out right on 64lb all up with seats and rudder. 10-18-2010, Ben

Osp-13

Designed for petite adults, up to 5’3” 125 lb, along with teens and kids down to 50” tall, the Osprey 13’ is light and quick. Her low wetted surface means keeping pace with stronger paddlers is simple. She handles beautifully. Whether you are on a placid estuary or rough open water, the Osprey 13 will hold a course, and her shorter water line aids in maneuvering in tight water. This is a great kayak for kids!

Osprey Std 15’8” Length • 24” Beam • 12” Depth • 38 lb

Osp-Std

The Osprey Std continues to maintain a cult-like following thanks to her stable manners and ease of paddling. As one of our strongest tracking hulls, she holds course beautifully in wind and waves. Her low wetted surface gives her a fast cruising speed and her long water line (the same as the 17’ Arctic Tern) gives her a high top speed. Ample cargo capacity and good stability make her a fine choice for touring and day paddling. Beginner paddlers often comment on how quickly they feel confident paddling the Osprey Standard. More experienced paddlers marvel at her quick acceleration and efficiency.

Osprey Std.*, Dec. 1996, “has good stability. In terms of paddling feel she is one of the most comfortable boats I have ever paddled. I felt secure in it immediately” (VS).

“The boat is quick and responsive. It accelerated and held speed with little effort” (DA). When unloaded, [she] gave all of our reviewers a sense of easy, effortless paddling, perhaps because of its light weight. “The day of my test I paddled over ten miles and I felt like I had hardly done any work” (VS). *SK review is of the GoldenEye, the predecessor of the Osprey Std. The GoldenEye had the same hull without our new cambered deck.

11’ ALL-ROUNDER SUP

11’ All-Rounder Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) 11’ LENGTH | 34.25” WIDTH | 5.25” THICK 35.5 LB | 249 L VOLUME Based on classic long board designs “All-Round” SUPs (also known as Recreational SUPs) combine ease of paddling with stability and maneuverability. They are the “multitaskers” of the SUP world. Our new 11’ SUP with its classically beautiful lines fits the bill. Its length and 10” tail fin provide good glide, while its rockered bottom and narrow tail give it good maneuverability. The shape, width and volume give it the stability needed to hold large paddlers steady and makes it great for beginners. While designed primarily as a flat water board, its rockered bottom helps the board handle choppy afternoons and smaller playful waves. It’s great for ocean paddling, river running (class 2 and under), cruising, fishing, crabbing, and paddling tandem with a child or furry companion. Due to its length and width, it’s a popular choice for SUP Yoga enthusiasts as well.

The Perfect Family Board: Stability and versatility make this board the perfect one-board choice for the whole family.

With its flat deck, this user-friendly board provides a wide platform for a comfortable stance. We’ve taken it crabbing, on board a sailboat for some side adventures, paddled it on glassy days, in choppy swell and had a local yogini contort on deck. It’s an ideal family board for beginner paddlers up to 250lb and advanced paddlers up to 300lb.

Build Your Own Paddleboard: This paddleboard comes together easily with no prior woodworking experience. The internal structure is composed of pre-cut wood stringers and cross-members making it extra rigid for a sturdy feel under foot. From the entry-level paddler prioritizing stability to the advanced paddler who wants performance in a wide range of conditions (fishing or taking a companion) this is a fun all-round board that you can build!

WINEGLASS WHERRY 26

WineGlass Wherry 14’ Length • 48” Beam • 16” Depth • 90 lb

The WineGlass Wherry has the wineglass transom and smooth double-ended waterline of a classic rowing boat. When designing her, John drew inspiration from beach skiffs that were common along the New England coast during the late 1800’s. Used in commercial fisheries, folks launched them through the surf and rowed out to fishing grounds. Their planked skegs allowed them to be more easily built and avoided the added weight of a heavy keel. Our WineGlass Wherry is a synthesis of two such boats—the Penobscott Bay Salmon Wherry and the Sea Bright Skiff. Like her predecessors, she is rugged, stable, and can handle wind and chop with grace and speed. Weighs Only 90 Pounds: A traditionally built craft of the same design, with planking and ribs, would weigh nearly 300 pounds. The lightweight wood with fiberglass encapsulation saves you 70% in weight, without sacrificing strength and durability! The WineGlass Wherry is amazingly easy to transport. She can be carried on the roof of your vehicle, on a small trailer, or rolled to the beach with strap-on wheels. Whether you want a yacht tender, a camping boat, a seaworthy exercise rowing craft, or a family adventure boat—the WineGlass Wherry can do the job, beautifully.

Wherry

WoodenBoat Magazine “The Wineglass Wherry transports effortlessly over-land on a two-wheel dolly. Balancing its 90lbs over the wheels, I was able to push the boat along blacktop, down the ramp, and into the water alone, without any strain... The boat was well mannered on all points of sail, tracking dead straight. This was especially impressive on a beam reach, when one might expect the boat to round up or weathercock. There was none of this behavior.“

P ygmy ’s Stitch- n - Glue Construction DON’T JUST PADDLE IT, BUILD IT. Pygmy Innovation: Pygmy Boats’ designer, John

Lockwood, created the world’s first commercially available hull plate expansion program, revolutionizing boat building. In 1985 he began using that cutting-edge technology to serve home builders of human powered boats. Pygmy Boats is now the oldest most esteemed manufacturer of precision pre-cut stitch and glue kayak kits in North America. Our boat kits are award-winning, sophisticated designs. Their ultra-accuracy makes them quick and easy to construct, even for non-woodworkers. All of our boats are fully computer designed. John studies the traditional centuries-old design

concepts and modifies them for modern needs and materials, resulting in extremely complex hulls. Computer guided lasers cut our plank templates to .004 of an inch accuracy. The accuracy and design combined create a sophisticated, high performance boat that’s easy to build.

Simple Construction: Never before have boats of

this complexity been built so simply and quickly. The building process takes no special skills. Hundreds of women and men with no prior woodworking experience build Pygmy boats each year. No power tools are needed. They require no strongback or mold. No trimming of panels (call us before ever making any modifications to a kit!). Our shop crew does

all the woodworking. The kit arrives via FedEx to your door. Unpack the boxes, lay out the labeled panels, and glue them to their full lengths. Edge drill the wiring holes with a handy little template that makes this step a snap. Then start sewing the panels together with small wire twists. You exert no force on the panels. They easily assume their proper shape as you stitch them together. Next, glue the seams, remove the wires the following day, and fiberglass the boat. We recommend mixing epoxy, pouring it in a paint tray and laying it on with a foam roller. This technique quickly saturates the fiberglass cloth, laminating it to your hull. Most people build their Pygmy in a garage or basement. Those without an outbuilding or basement can clear the living room furniture, spread out a tarp and construct a boat right in the house! Key For Table At Right: * Given in Ft3, Unless Otherwise Noted ° The Transverse Metacenter, in inches, is a measure of a kayak’s initial stability. A higher number is more stable. All single kayaks computed with the same weight person. † Efficient cruising is a function of low frictional drag and low wetted surface. Lower WS means faster (less effort) cruising speeds, here expressed in sq. ft. For example, the shorter Arctic Tern 14 cruises with less effort than the longer AT-17 until the AT-14 reaches 4.91 mph. ‡ Top cruising speed (TCS) is determined by loaded waterline length (LWL). A longer LWL gives a faster TCS. At approximately 90% of its hull speed (when a kayak starts to produce a bow wake longer than its LWL) the effort required to continue accelerating radically increases. In general longer kayaks have higher top speeds and short kayaks have more efficient cruising speeds. § Also available with a 17” x 33” cockpit opening.
