CONCRETE BANK OF THE RIVER LACK OF RECREATION SPACE Subject of this thesis is Odra waterfront revitalization, situated in the important part of Szczecin, between the Old Town and Chrobry Terraces. After carpet-bombing during World War II the city was devastated. The Old Town was destroyed in 75% and bricks were exported to Warsaw, so reconstruction was impossible. In 1946 a plan was made to rebuild the city in a new, modern way. The result is a 70-meters wide route that cuts-off the city from river, elevated freeway with vast junction that completely destroys connection between Old Town and Chrobry Terraces. New buildings are mostly four-storey "cube" blocks that do not have the scale and quality appropriate for this place. Floating Garden SPOT is a vision of transformating this entire area in order to create the heart of the city, which has been lost over the years. SPOT in extension means Szczecin Plus Odra Transformation. The name of the project refers to promotional city slogan “Szczecin 2050 Floating Garden. This is an idea that focuses on development coastal areas of the city and the reconnection with the river.

HOW TO CREATE A NEW HEART OF THE CITY? To achieve this aim, it is important to make 3 significant changes. First change is a reorganisation of the traffic that includes a removal of elevated junction, and leaving only direct connection between the left and the right bank of the river. Furthermore, a reduction of the route which runs along the bank is needed. These actions aim to facilitate pedestrians and bicycles access to the waterfront. Second change is continuity of public spaces. Szczecin is a city that has rich system of parks and green spaces, but in the vicinity of the river is usually concrete bank with no place for recreation. Floating Garden SPOT brings people close to the river by creating high quality green spaces along the banks, and designing new bridges which stimulates the flow of pedestrians between the two shores. Last but not least change is complement of the buildings. The Old Town of Szczecin was not fully rebuilt in the aftermath of the war, it needs to be finished and create as a new high-class district.

Floating Garden SPOT E: Educational incubator for young people is an extension of urban design Floating Garden SPOT. This is a science centre where schoolchildren can learn about physics, biology, chemistry and geology. There is also a place for high school students and universities where they can learn, organise workshops and events. The building shape refers to medieval fortifications line as well as historic buildings line. The form is divided into three elements in order to fit into narrow divisions of the historic grid. Different heights adds the expression and dynamism to the form.

CITY HALL AS A GATE TO NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Wyspa Mieszczańska in Wrocław is a place that suffers after World War devastation. Buildings are scattered. It is important to redesign them in order to create valuable space. First phase of this project was creating an urban design in a group of seven students. Second phase was designing the building. “City Hall : geodesy and cartography department” was designed in collaboration with Julia Modlińska. Main idea of this project was to connect two buildings by multifunctional underground space, which is shown on diagram. Urban phase was developed on a handmade model.

WISE COMPLEMENT OF URBAN GRID An assignment was to complement the town quarter which was redesigned after World War. Entire parcel was divided and distributed in groups. This project is a residential building with two storeys of service functions. Świdnicka is a very prestigious street therefore materials used to finish the facade are high qualited. A model of the whole complex was presented at the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław during the festival DOFA 2013 on a exhibition “Young Architects build Wrocław”.
