Director’s Note
Welcome to Pymble’s Senior School production of Girl Asleep
Matthew Whittet’s coming-of-age play is a heightened, retro-styled vision of Australian suburbia, but the 70s tunes, record player and flares are just the beginning. Whittet writes that, “Sleeping Beauty was the starting point for the play. Greta Driscoll is a girl who is so introverted it’s like she’s asleep. We allow her to fall asleep and into a fairy-tale at the same time.”
The play is a fun house of teenage dreams, realities and nightmaressome of them more literal than others. The story converges on Greta’s 15th birthday where everything she thinks she has ‘in check’ takes a wild turn and the lines between adolescence and adulthood become hauntingly blurred; her mum, Janet, doesn’t understand her; her dad, Conrad, just isn’t funny anymore, and her older sister, Genevieve, is suddenly watching ‘like a hawk’.
When the night of her party finally arrives and everyone from school spills into her living room, it’s no wonder Greta takes a break to process it all. Then, the unimaginable happens, and her world turns even more bizarre. Or is it her subconscious? Only one thing is certain - she needs to find her music box to finally break the spell.
The cast have really risen to the challenge of this technically savvy and highly imaginative piece of theatre.
Thank you for supporting us.
Ms Melinda Pedavoli Head of Drama and Theatre ProductionThe cast and crew would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to our College leaders - Dr Kate Hadwen, Lamia Rockwell, Christine Kenny and Justin Raymond, as well as Greg Meagher, Sarah Loch, Nikki Wyse and Michelle Hunt - for their support of the performing arts and their belief in the transformative power of theatre in fostering the confidence of our young women. The girls would also like to thank their families for their support and patience with holiday and after-school rehearsals. Finally, we thank our audience for being here tonight.
