Production Notes
STEM and the Performing Arts have come together to create the wonderful world of STEAM, providing a dynamic and enriching collaboration for our Junior School students and harnessing the unique skills within each discipline. The skills developed are complementary and often mirror each other, fostering innovative thinking and problem-solving. Both require high levels of:
• Creativity: Through imaginative storytelling, character portrayal, and developing novel solutions and inventions.
• E ective Communication: Through conveying emotions to an audience or articulating complex ideas within interdisciplinary teams.
• Teamwork: Reliant on the coordinated e orts of actors, directors, and crew, and essential for collaboration among engineers, scientists and technologists.
• Problem-Solving: By adapting to the dynamic nature of live performances, STEM professionals tackle complex problems with analytical skills.
Integrating skills from both areas has provided opportunities to enhance our students’ capabilities and foster a multidisciplinary approach, enriching artistic and scientific endeavors and leading to more impactful outcomes.
In our production, all the sets, props and production elements have been created by the students. We are very proud to see how the girls have put on their creative and imaginative Wonka hats to create something that has had a real-world application.
When selecting a play for the Junior School STEAM Festival, it was important to choose something relatable. The theme of kindness in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is central, as Charlie’s inherently kind nature ultimately enables him to reach his full potential and inherit Willy Wonka’s magical chocolate factory. This narrative highlights how the smallest acts of kindness often go unnoticed yet have the biggest impact, demonstrating that genuine goodness and compassion can lead to extraordinary opportunities and transformative outcomes.
