EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

It was a typical college day for me back in 2004. I had time to kill between classes so I left NYU’s campus and headed over to one of my favorite places—the bookstore. As I browsed through the aisles— admiring the various titles and taking note of different authors, a striking brown woman caught my eye. Her smile was bright, her skin was sun-kissed, and her shoulder-length hair of enviable curls fell mostly to one side. She was Zoe Saldana - gracing the cover of Suede Magazine. I picked up the issue and immediately began devouring the incredibly vibrant photo spreads and articles. Each flip of the page validated my dream - to become a magazine editor. I took Zoe home with me and that evening sent an email to the Editor-in-Chief, Suzanne Boyd - desperately inquiring about internship opportunities at Suede. She shared my Trinidadian roots so I just knew she would give me a shot at interning for her. In my head, we had so much in common already! That year, I must have sent 20 emails and letters but I never heard from Suzanne. The magazine stopped publication after its 4th issue but by that point Suede had already changed my life. The publication was exciting and fresh. The content was provocative and spoke exclusively to a new generation of girls like myself. I still own all four issues (and proudly pulled them out for inspiration when I sat down to curate and edit this issue). It is in the spirit of creating a publication, (like Suede Magazine), for the uptown-downtown multicultural cosmopolitan who is always on the cusp of all things fashion, culture and entertainment-related that we bring to you – PYNK – a labor of love I am very proud to be a part of.

PUBLISHER

The initial idea of creating a magazine for the ‘pretty, powerful and provocative’ female came to me a little over year ago while sitting on the floor in Harlem on 117th street with my business partner and owner of BLEU magazine, De’von Johnson.

PYNK is a publication for fly 20-30 something’s, (as Michaela Angela Davis would say), to read about beauty, fashion, and lifestyle.

The demise of two of my favorite glossies, Suede and Honey, left a definitive void in the magazine publishing industry. I missed that Honey swag and the insane creativity Suede offered. I knew a lot of my girlfriends and industry colleagues felt the same. So... We decided that after a successful year at BLEU Magazine, we would create a female equivalent and sister mag. We named it PYNK - a publication for fly 20-30 something’s, (as Michaela Angela Davis would say), to read about beauty, fashion, and lifestyle. After several months without sleep, we launched the publication on June 5th, 2012 with LaLa Anthony gracing the cover as our ultimate PYNK Girl. At the time, LaLa was filming her show on VH1, so the entire photo shoot was documented and later aired on the finale episode of LaLa’s Full Court Life! What an awesome way to launch a magazine, right? Although I felt a strong sense of accomplishment after the release of the publication, I quickly learned the truth behind my mother’s favorite saying, “All that glitters ain’t gold.” PYNK was growing rapidly and we were receiving so much love and support from brands and the media, yet it wasn’t enough to keep our core team together. So I went back to the drawing board to assemble a team that I felt understood the PYNK brand. This issue will introduce the work of some of the coolest and most talented people I have had the opportunity to work with in a while... Gabriel Williams, Genel Ambrose, Pat Sumpter-Davis (PYNK Girl Alumni) and Carlton Brown came together with Devon and myself to create something that I’m extremely proud and happy to be a part of. I hope you all enjoy what we have put together. Email me at Mecca@ PynkMag.com and let me know your thoughts. Good or bad, always remember to #ThinkPYNK.

Meet the stylists - Alisha Crutchfield & Becca Alexis - who curated the vision for Tamar’s fun and fresh cover story looks

By: Genel Ambrose

Did Tamar express how she felt in her outfits? How did it make you feel? Tamar expressed her excitement for the wardrobe immediately upon reviewing, which was a great feeling. To have the trust from a client, from the start, is refreshing and motivating! How long have you been styling and working in fashion? We’ve been working in the industry for 10 years and we’re very passionate about it. Was Tamar fun to work with? Tell us something cute she did on set. Tamar was a delight to work with! Her bubbly giggle and public show of affection for her husband, while on set supporting her, was so cute!

Give me details on each look. Where were the clothes pulled from? The theme for the shoot was “color candy.” We wanted to ensure that the looks conveyed sweetness and fun. We pulled from various designers including Roberto Cavalli, CD Greene, Zang Toi, etc. All of these designers understand a woman who doesn’t hesitate when it comes to color and boldness! Tamar wore a lot of bright colors during the shoot. What inspired the theme for the shoot? We were inspired by Tamar’s vibrant colorful personality. Bold, bright colors are key summer trends we wanted to convey and it came together seamlessly for this shoot.

9

What can someone do to spruce up their wardrobe this season and infuse some color? Name key pieces they can purchase to make their closet pop. Alisha: Bring some drama to your pre-fall/fall wardrobe with the mix-and-match trend! Opt for color block pieces, prints, and bold colored staple items... Becca: I purchased a floral print wedge and floral print pants to add more variety to my solid pieces! Have you ever had a situation where the model or celeb on set didn’t like the outfits you pulled? How did you handle? What happened? Fashion is an expression and clients need to feel that no matter what the look is, the visual is true to who he or she is. This is a process during the fitting and also why its imperative to have many options. Clients are vocal about what looks they like the most and what they like the least. As we go through the options we come closer to what the clients prefer.

PRETTY IN P Y N K Tamar:

Beauty-Behind-The-Cover B

What was your favorite part of the Tamar shoot? Pat: My favorite part of the Tamar shoot was how well we were entertained by her sense of humor! Porsche: Tamar was so much fun and full of energy and life that she lit up the room, literally. We laughed the entire shoot which made for a really laid back set. Once we began shooting, seeing everyone’s joyful reaction to the images once the hair, makeup, and styling came together was certainly the highlight of the day. The team definitely made it happen!

Name three things that you must have when working on your clients? Pat: Three things that I must have when working on clients are a great flat iron, hair spray, shine spray. Porsche: Radiant and healthy looking skin is always my main concern on set, so my Caudalie Beauty Elixir is a product I use all day long. It preps the skin for makeup, helps to tighten pores, sets makeup, and helps to promote a glowing complexion. It literally feels like a spa treatment in a bottle. Everyone loves it! My absolute favorite foundation is Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation for its lightweight and radiant formula. I use it on all of my clients for print, tv, and special appearances. You can build the foundation for full coverage or apply it sparingly for the look of naked skin. The line has a great selection of shades for women of color as well. I always feel that a glamorous makeup is incomplete without lashes. From drugstore to luxury brands, I always select wispy and feathery natural hair lashes to add drama to any makeup. I normally customize lashes for my clients by stacking multiple pairs together to accentuate their eye shape and eye makeup. I literally am addicted to lashes, as I wear them every single day myself.

>> P orsc he C oope r, Ma ke up

Porsche: Kelis has always been one of my favorite singers. She exudes everything the PYNK girl is-she’s absolutely beautiful, has always been provocative with her music and visuals, and has created a lane that is all hers. She takes no prisoners and has always had a keen sense of style before most were “edgy.” I adore her and her gumption.

Artist

Who would you love to have as PYNKs next cover girl? Pat: I would love to see Nia Long as the next Pynk Cover Girl.

Learn How to Inspire Whiplash with a Different Type of Extension

Bat For Lashes Badass lashes are back. We’re talking impossibly lush, lap-at-your-lenses, Minnie Mouse follicle fringes — those blinkable babies we couldn’t flirt without. Eyelash enhancement is beasting beauty industry sales, with lash extensions leading the charge. Rochelle Magno of NYC’s Lash Gallery is the stylist - or eyelist, if you will - who can magically pump up your peepers without even waving her mascara wand. Check our eye-opening interview on lash extension application, styles, and maintenance.

17

By: Shanel Odum / Interviewed by Nadine Graham

Tell us a bit about what you do. I started a company in New York called The Lash Gallery three years ago. We specialize in high-end eyelash extensions, from synthetic to mink Xtreme Lashes, the brand we use, is globally renowned. What’s the main focus of The Lash Gallery besides the application of extensions? Eyelash extension is such a craze that the service is offered on every corner. The problem with some of these salons is improper application and care. You can get eye infections from contaminated tools. Balding is also very common. Strips are a no-no. I’ve noticed that people are using strips as semipermanent solutions (which is what we offer with individual extensions.) Glue from the strips will clog pores weakening the lashes or causing the lash roots to fall out completely. Hygiene and sanitation are huge priorities at The Lash Gallery. If you ever stop using our extensions, your lashes will look exactly the same as when you walked in. Why is it so important to care for natural lashes? Eyelashes are hair; they are follicles that we have to take care of. You should treat them and care for them the way you care for the hair on your head. What are some of your tips as far as taking care of the extensions? First, find the right stylist. Ask how long they’ve been doing lashes, what type of vendors they use. Don’t be afraid to ask if they’re certified and which company they used. If someone hesitates on any of those questions, then you have to wonder if they should be caring for your lashes. Once they’re applied, you need to wait 48 hours for the adhesive to secure. The lashes are still vulnerable for the first two days so we

suggest no hot showers, tanning, oil-based makeup, makeup removers, or moisturizers. What’s the duration of the wear? If you have an active lifestyle where you’re always sweating and this is your first time trying it, I’d say they can last two weeks. I also have long-term clients who are able to maintain them for a month between refills. How much do you charge per application? My synthetics range from $250 to $350, the silk and the mink are $400 and up. How long does it take to apply the lashes? I’m considered a professional stylist so my application lasts about an hour, but I ask first-time clients to give me an extra hour for consultation. Some people are asking for the Kim Kardashian look. I have clients who want a more conservative look. Once we nail down what you want, we move forward with the session. So people come to get their lashes refilled? Just like your nails, your natural lashes grow every six to nine days and each one of them are on different lifelines, so they can grow at different rates. In two weeks, you’ll see one lash sticking out like a sore thumb. That’s where maintenance comes into play. The whole point of lash extensions is to replicate the perfect lash. Besides great lashes, what else gives you the perfect, polished look? I have to have a great foundation — I use MAC— a bronzer, and a lipgloss. That’s all I use on a daily basis because my lashes do everything else.

OWER GIRLS Ladies take note of these female game-changers we call role models

DIA SIMMS Beside every powerful man, is a powerful woman. For hip hop virtuoso and business mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, Dia Simms is that woman. Executive Vice President of The Blue Flame, a marketing and advertising agency, Dia Simms is responsible for a variety of marketing strategies for Ciroc ultra-premium vodka, Sean John Clothing and all Sean John fragrances. With her Bachelors in Psychology, Masters in Management and boss-lady attitude, Simms proves she can play just as hard as her male counterparts and win. Before her high-powered executive position, Simms started out as an assistant to Combs who offered her the role after only a five-minute interview. Now five years later, she has become his go-to-gal. “As a woman, it is important to feel like you can embrace your femininity, be ladylike and powerful simultaneously,” she explains of being the only woman in a largely male dominated workforce. Hard work is the major factor for her success. “Whether you are volunteering at a church or closing a multi-million deal, it is important to give it 500 hundred percent,” says Simms.

BEVERLY BOND New York disc jockey Beverly Bond may have the looks of a stunning runway model, but this beauty was born to spin tunes. At the age of seventeen, Bond traveled to New York City to pursue a modeling career with Elite Models and later with Wilhelmina. Bond was the face of top brands including Guess, Diesel, Nike, and MTV. After a while though, she realized her real passion was music. For the last six years, the former model has brought her DJ’ing skills to entertainment events around the world. Her extensive musical knowledge has caught the attention of A-list celebrity clientele such as Jay-Z, Britney Spears, and Prince. Back in 2005, music mogul Russell Simmons was so impressed with her, he gave her a lifestyle column in his One World Magazine where she profiled different established and emerging artists. Her talent for the craft coupled with her unique style, has made her skills in the DJ booth relevant in both the

commercial and underground music worlds, as well as the fashion world. Diversifying her sound by listening to various genres of music -including hip hop, pop, soul and rock - has made her one of the most influential DJ’s in the country. Besides being a celebrated DJ, Beverly Bond is also a mentor, activist, philanthropist, and the founder of Black Girls Rock!, a nonprofit youth empowerment mentoring organization that helps inner-city girls through the arts. Black Girls Rock! has become one of Bond’s largest achievements to date, positively impacting the lives of millions of young women of color. “I want our girls to be inspired to not settle for being less than their best selves.” Bond said of the Black Girls Rock! movement. “I want them to feel proud of who they are and who they can be and who we have been.”

MICHAELA ANGELA DAVIS Born in Germany and raised in Washington D.C., army brat Michaela Angela Davis is the considered among the new millennium provocateurs influencing black history and culture. An artist at heart, Davis studied acting at NYU, Stella Adler Actin Conservatory and dance at the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. For the past twenty years, she has made a considerable impact on the hip hop and fashion communities due to her focus on style, gender, race, and culture. Davis’s first career defining position was at Essence Magazine where she served as Assistant Fashion Editor. During her time at Essence, she is credited for creating the Take Back the Music campaign, a multi-media campaign that brought awareness to the hyper- sexualized image of young women of color in the media. “My first memory of fashion is paper dolls,” said Davis who won the coveted NAACP Phenomenal Woman Award in 2011. Growing up in the 1970’s – where color and patterns reigned - influenced Michaela’s passion for fashion. Her hard work and enthusiasm for the industry allowed her to become a pioneering force behind black fashion and contributed to her work in magazines such as Vibe where she served as Fashion Director and later Honey Magazine where she was Fashion Director and Editor-in-Chief. A self-described image activist, Davis is focused on helping the world understand what it means to be black. Along with her activism, the journalist, author, stylist, and television star serves on the board of Black Girls Rocks! and conducts her own monthly career-mentoring program called Salon de Shine. A public speaker, she regularly speaks on campuses across the country, while working on a novel called The Revolution of Happiness.

This Season’s Official Must Do’s

THIS SH!T IS

HOTTER

THAN A NYC SIDEWALK IN

AUGUST

During goosebump season, we’re all about our tea, whether it’s in the morning to jolt us awake or after hours when pouring a little Jameson in to make a strong Hot Toddy is oh so necessary. This fall, we’re rocking with Rishi loose leaf teas, the leader in certified organic teas. The taste, the nutrients. It’ll change your life.

We can’t say the last time we braved a Coach store. Pre-teens purchasing their first luxury bag and fashion victims choosing matching signature accessories — not really our scene. But we’re braving Coach stores this fall thanks to the reintroduction of the classic handbag line. On second thought, we’ll utilize our online shopping capabilities.

30

The most amazing designers have been taking their talents to inexpensive retailers for years, but this fall when Missoni for Target hits shelves, we’ll be the first in line to pull some hair and knock some teeth out for the perfect size.

Our obsession with home beauty regiments for hair and skin it falls right in line with our NYE resolution to go green (not that that’s holding up). Try an avocado-olive-oil yogurt mixture to make your locks thicker and healthier than ever or a cucumber-strawberry-yogurt facial that will leave your skin fresh and glowing. Thank us later.

31

Why are perfect jeans so hard to find? It seems like the best fits can have the worst washes, but Resin jeans is out to change the game. The Estelleapproved denim line almost guarantees us pulling an American Boy for cuffing season.

We knew we had to cop Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness by Alexandra Fuller as soon as we read a passage detailing the author’s manic mother who dressed her daughter’s up as a rose and a pesticide drum for a festive party in honor of “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden.”

This is the season of Sanford Biggers, a brilliant artist. With two exhibits opening up in New York City (Cosmic Voodoo Circus at SculptureCetner in Long Island City, Queens and Sweet Funk: An Introspective at Brooklyn Museum), he’s the next hot thing in the art world. We’re glad they’re finally catching on. Head to Eastern Parkway in October for his discussion with Mos Def and Top Chef’s Marcus Samuelsson. If you don’t find a PYT that knows a thing or two about art in the audience, shame on you.

32

YSL’s La Laque nail lacquer in wintergreen is the go-to color this season. It’s funky as hell, and the perfect shade to go along with the rising chill in the air.

Who watches TV on TV anymore? We even catch up on Mad Men through Internet streaming, so it felt natural when we stumbled across the Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. And we’re not the only ones absolutely enamored, Issa Rae, founder of the hilarious webisodes, raised more than $50,000 on KickStarter to continue the series thanks to her loyal fans. If you’re not one already, get your mind right.

33

The chaos of Fashion Week is upon us, but that doesn’t mean you can’t channel some model behavior and pig out on liquid lunches. The new wave of cocktails hitting bars across the country are ones meant to taste like appetizers — think cucumber-and-basil infused vodka martini dubbed a Caprese (Salad) and the Prosecco-based Gazpacho cocktail at bars like Zio and Gastroarte (not respectively). We’re in.

It’s cuffing season, ladies. Whether you’re shopping for arctic armcandy or spooning your winter-weather boo, you should also be embracing a different kind of sexy accessory – the earcuff. We’re hooked on Pretty In Punk, the beautifully badass jewelry line that incorporates flowing feathers, gorgeous gunmetal, sterling silver swords, and studded ammo into impossibly chic ear-adornments. prettyinpunknyc. com

Bridget Kelly dishes on her frisky “firsts” (and even lists a few “lasts”) 36

37

Y

ou knew Bridget Kelly before she dropped her first single. Well, you knew of her. Besides being the bridge-belting singer who replaced Alicia Keys alongside Jay Z for his Empire State Of Mind tour in 2009, Google revealed little else about the pretty young performer with the bangin’ bob. While the boys in the yard are still trying to get to know the 25-year-old, New York-bred diva, PYNK gets personal and dips our tips into the songstress’ love life. (Thank us later, fellas!) From Dawson’s Creek-inspired first dates to cute culinary catastrophes, Bridget has a trilogy worth of LOL-worthy love stories.

In celebration of Every Girl, Bridget’s romantic roller coaster of an EP (and buzz-builder for her upcoming debut album), the Roc Nation songstress dishes on some of her firsts and lasts in love — including the woes and lows. Our girl talk was so much fun, we’re already anxious for the sequel. When was the first time a guy told you he loved you?
I was in my sophomore year of high school.
 Did you believe him?
I did. I’ve always been really optimistic and romantic. I’m a dreamer. I was really excited and the feeling, I thought at the time, was mutual.
Talk about the first time you brought someone home to meet your parents? Oh, man! My mom is a tough cookie. She’s really a hard person to crack, so it was funny to see her drill him, make sure he’s keeping eye contact, and figure out where his mind was. My dad was really quiet. He was the observant one and my mother was the interrogator. It was definitely a scene out of a TV show. Tell us about your first experience with heartbreak? I’ve had a lot of heartbreak but the first one was really devastating. I thought that I was the only person the guy was dealing with and it turned out that I wasn’t. It wasn’t so much that I caught him in the act, it’s that we were dating and he went ghost on me for a couple of days. I didn’t know if he was dead or alive. These days, we’re all on our cell phones, so to not hear from somebody for an hour is nerve wrecking. I didn’t hear from him for three days and when he finally resurfaced it was like, “Oh, by the way, I have this other girl that I’m seeing. This is a wrap and I’m having a baby.” That was my first real devastating, earth-shattering heartbreak.
Ouch. On to a happier note — how was your very first date?
I don’t really remember my first real date, to be honest. I always remember trying to make it happen in seventh or eight grade during the Dawson’s Creek era. I remember trying to get on that level but I was 14 and it wasn’t happening. I think my first real date was in high school. It was probably some place kind of cheesy, like Dave & Busters. Most of my early dates were group dates — it made things a little less awkward. I think I’m really bold but during the first date stage, my boldness didn’t come across.

When was the first time you did something sexy or romantic for someone? Probably right after high school. I can’t cook – I try to stay out of the kitchen as much as possible — but I literally spent close to two hours reading a cookbook and watching TV shows on how to bake this guy’s favorite cake. It came out horrible. It was the biggest confidence killer I’ve ever taken on but it was really romantic. I remember filling the house with balloons and trying to be super cute about it. He appreciated the effort. That’s what matters most.
Now let’s talk about “lasts.” When was the last time you cried?
Probably last week, truthfully. This might sound really silly, but there’s this commercial — I can’t even remember what the commercial was for — but the scene is of these two little girls, they’re sisters. One girl is taking care of her little sister while her mom is in the service. She’s showing her how to do her hair and take care of her clothes, and at the end of the commercial, as she’s tucking her in she says, “This kiss is from me and this kiss is from mommy.” Then you see their mommy show up in the doorway in tears. Every so often, around that hormonal time of the month, I get a little emotional. So, as soon as the woman showed up at the door, I was like “Oh my God, this is so sweet,” and was in tears. When was the last time you felt butterflies? Last Christmas. I love Christmas time so I’m always perky and excited about the holidays. It’s cuffing season and the stage was just set. It was a matter of perfect timing.
When’s the last time you gave a guy your number? The last time I gave someone my number was early last year, and it was my BBM pin. I felt that was a little less personal than my phone number. Then it turned out to not be. It was actually more intrusive because of the R’s and all that on Blackberry.
Last but not least, when was the last time a guy said ‘no’ to some loving? I’m a stubborn person and sometimes kind of controlling. When I don’t get my way, I tend to wild out, have a fit, and be a bit of a brat. The last time a guy rejected me, it actually made me want him more. It definitely had the reverse effect as opposed to me being like, “Well, forget you.” It was, “Wait, why not? Why can’t we just … ?” It definitely heightened my attraction a little.

FALL

2012 Trend By: Samantha Smikle

Report

While the summer saw a surge in rave-y neon pieces and allowed the “Nails Did” movement to take over even the most basic girl. This Fall season takes a super chic, super bold turn. Pieces are deliberate -whether it’s a bright red massive cocoon coat at Comme Des Garcons or cobalt blue cat eyes at Anna Sui. Fall 2012 attempts to trump all you know about the season - like showing us white looks, too soon to be called “Winter White.” And forget about the huge satchel bags that scream ‘back to fall,’ they’re replaced by compact, structured clutches. Let’s run-a-way with this season’s dynamic runway trends.

39

Nothing says cold weather like a statement coat. Say it loud in major impact, away-from-the-body, cocoon style outerwear. This is your chance to be bold with color! Bright, color-blocked and printed coats work well in this style that’s minimal in construction. [Chloe, Celine, Commes Des Garcons]

COCOON COATS

40

Straps won’t work with your cocoon coat and they will only hold you back at that important meeting, interview or after-work event. It’s the Power Clutch, the Go Bag. Tuck it under your arm and you’re off! Look for bags that are briefcase-like in structure and playful in color. Don’t match it to your look, wear it with everything! [Dries Van Noten, Givenchy]

THE POWER CLUTCH

41

CONFIDENT COLLARS

Sometimes it’s just the little things. Collections take a note from the accessory craze that we’ve seen in the past year: collars. From Peter Pan to studded, collections use contrast and embellishments to set your collar apart from the pack. The great part? No need for a necklace or major earrings, let this neck interest be your focal point. [Lela Rose, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Derek Lam]

42

ALL WHITE AFFAIR

Somewhere between summer white and winter white is this Fall season’s demand for the color. The only regulated color of the spectrum [no white after Labor Day] will be breaking all rules. This season sees an updated take on the color in iridescent fabrics that give a metallic illusion as seen at Peter Som or combined with off white for a tonal effect as done by J. Mendel and Derek Lam. [Alexander Wang, Peter Som, J. Mendel, Derek Lam]

43

It might be the chicest color combo of the season, the It color, of sorts. The black and blue color combo faux pas was seen on several runways, making it not so much a misstep after all. Be sure that the blue is navy, midnight even. The deepest blue with the blackest black is your instant guide to a polished Fall season. [Preen, Cushnie Et Ochs, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney]

ALL BLACK & BLUE

44

USUAL SUSPECTS

So much for the shaggy fur you snagged on sale this summer. Designers par back on fur this season. With the past year’s whacky weather pushing fall sales well into the warmer seasons, you may need lighter versions on the textured looks. Try pieces that play with mixes of leather and fur. Take a cue from the patch work of BCBG Max Azria, peek-a-boo leather and fur trim at Missoni and peeps of fur out of seams at Rodarte.

[BCBG Max Azria, Missoni, Rodarte, Givenchy]

45

Hang up your blazers and reach for something just as authoritarian and a little more structured. The military style takes over void that our fave oversized vintage jackets and trendy shrunken style blazers will leave behind. The look isn’t all gold buttoned double breasted kitsch of it’s former season appearance. This time around, look for key details like opulets, wide belted waists, shoulder patches and pieces in “military” green. [Altuzarra, Burberry Prorsum, Rag & Bone, Jason Wu and Topshop Unique.]

MILITARY MAVEN

46

A bit Iggy Azaelia, a bit Patra. All parts chic, cool and severe. For the sleekest look, style hair while damp, saturate with extra hold mouse. Add extensions in the ponytail to replicate the look exactly. Make it edgy with a kinky braided pony tail instead; secure the end with an elastic band and leave about 2 inches out puffy and frizzy! [Jason Wu, Iggy Azalea]

MY [SEVERE] PONY[TAIL]

47

SAY IT WITH YOUR EYES

Give the bold lip a rest, your eyes are jealous! A cobalt cat eye makes a debut at Anna Sui while double liner earns a double take at Rachel Zoe and Altuzarra. Earn the look with practice, but we promise that it’s easier than it looks. Say it with me, “Elevating the cat eye, elevating the cat eye...” [Anna Sui, Rachel Zoe, Altuzarra]

CLOSET CASE We’re not interested in skeletons – check out this media maven’s coveted collection Self-described as social media’s head puppeteer, music industry insider Karen Civil is a force to be reckoned with. At 26, she has held enviable posts as Social Media Coordinator for Lil Wayne’s YMCMB camp, Digital Marketing Manager at Beats by Dre and Head Bloggerati of her own KarenCivil.com.

49

What is your day-to-day like?

Even though I live in California, I still operate on East Coast time. I get up at 6 a.m., blog for a few hours, then head to the Beats by Dre Office at 11 a.m. In the evenings, if I am not attending an event, I am back at my office – Always Civil Enterprises.

How do you get people to take you seriously?

It’s not easy. It takes time and it takes hard work. When you are a woman in this industry and a pretty one, most people will assume that they can take advantage of you. Men think, “let me try to date her.” You have to learn to put on a certain guard or shield and let the people around you in the industry know that you are there for business – whether it is conducting an interview or getting a sound bite for a post – it’s about business and should be respected as such. I have great relationships with several artists and it’s strictly business. The average person will assume that ‘she must be doing xyz with this artist.’ But that’s false. I work hard and artists appreciate my site. They understand what I bring to this industry, which works great for me.

Which blogs do you frequent?

I love Miss Jia. Sandra Rose is excellent for regular news content – not just gossip. I read her medical minutes all the time. Baller Alert is great for reality show updates. I can go on their site and get a synopsis of everything that is going to happen and a recap of shows that have already aired. I love Rap Radar. From hip hop to gossip to regular news, I respect all the other bloggers in this industry.

How do you maintain your brand integrity?

When I started my blog, it was about who I thought was going to be the “next up” - people I thought deserved to have a spotlight on them. Being able to help people’s careers – such as J Cole and Drake - is awesome. I don’t post everything though. To me it’s more about quality than quantity. If your music is good and relatable, that’s how I choose.

You have a line of snap-back caps and jewelry line with Good Wood. Tell me about these ventures.

Self-branding is important; as is branching off into other areas. Rappers and actors now have clothing lines. Rappers turn into actors. So it’s the same thing for me. I have the Live Civil line coming out with Civil Clothing. I have the Live Civil bracelets that read “Live Civil.” When someone upsets you, it’s just a reminder to live civil and incorporate that mantra into your daily life. I did the snapbacks with Rocksmith and I am very excited about that. These

ventures are just things that are cool - playing on the fashion side of things as well.

Did you know what you wanted to be when you were younger? Is that who you are now?

From the beginning I knew I wanted to do something social in a digital space. When everyone was going to parties on Friday nights, I was home running my Yahoo group. It came to a point when my mother asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I remember saying, “I need my own phone line to connect to AOL without anyone interrupting my internet connection.” From starting my Yahoo group to GeoCity to my own Backstreet Boys fan site to working with Dipset, I have always known I wanted to do this. I was always fascinated by the internet. So I am definitely in the field that I am wanted to be in.

Do you feel like you have to be the person that breaks the news? Or do you let other blogs do that and you get the real deal? Working in social media can interfere with your social life because you are always on the phone. It can be a little excessive. My friends are used to it now. But sometimes when I am out to dinner or at the movies – my phone is in my hand. At home, I have my phone in the bed with me. I am glued to my phone. I have to know at all times what’s happening. That - at times - can be a bit frustrating.

How do you handle unexpected events - such as the Lil Wayne/Pusha T. twitter beef? How does it impact your job? I have relationships with both parties on a personal level. With the situation like that – I try to be as unbiased as possible. I call it being Switzerland. I respect and admire both Wayne and Pusha. I work with them. So in a situation like that, I try to stay neutral and hope it passes.

Who is your favorite artist? Mac Miller.

Favorite interview to date?

My first interview for KarenCivil.com with Drake is high on the list. Each interview was special to me – from French Montana to Two Chains to Rhyme Fest. My interview series with J Cole would top the list off though. I interviewed him in the studio and gave people an intimate first look at him, which was really exciting.

50

Name an artist you are dying to interview.

Kanye West. I would like talk to him about his personal life, fashion sense, his music and really ask him questions that no one else would.

What do you do for fun?

I box, work on the beach and surf. I like action and outdoor sports. I don’t like to sit still. I like to take full advantage of this LA lifestyle.

Where do you see yourself long term?

My ultimate goal is to have a social media/ digital agency called Always Civil Enterprises. I want to help brands and artists to build social media presence and help them better interact with fans. I want to be able to give people insight into my world. On a more personal level, I would love to write a book that would help young girls deal with self-esteem.

What is your favorite piece (outfit or accessory) in your closet?

I love my Herve Leger dresses. I started collecting them a year ago, and it’s sort of an addiction for me. I love the way they hug my curves. My bracelets are always on my arm, I love to wear a ton. Live Civil Good Wood, YSL, Hermes, Cartier, Sue Tsai & Forever 21 bracelets are my go-to everyday.

Who is your favorite clothing designer?

It honestly varies… I love Alexander McQueen, YSL and Diamond Supply.

Are you more a shoe girl or a handbag lush? Why?

I’m a footwear girl. Rocking a pair of amazing shoes is my favorite form of expression - so I like it to tell a dope story.

Where do you usually go shopping?

I was an online shopping freak for quite a few years but now that I live in LA, I shop mostly in store. My guilty pleasure is the Louboutin website. I find myself there every other week. I also still love online shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue & Ssense websites.

How would you classify your style? What does a woman’s style say about her? What does your style suggest about you? I’d classify as a girl who is just exploring fashion options and expressing herself through her clothing. I love the fact that I can dress like a tom boy one day, and be in a gown the next day. I have no set ‘style.’ I am just a girl who is comfortable in her skin.

57

58

Po Johnson’s got the kind of natural inhibition that we’re only blessed with after downing a couple of heavy-handed cocktails. She’s a VH-1 reality wrangler’s wet dream. As far as we’re concerned, the crazycute, carefree, Doc-rocking, feisty fun-lover with the perfectly chopped blond mop deserves her own show. She’s a dose of reality that doesn’t need a spoonful of sugar. Lala Vasquez’s sweet, scene-stealing sidekick has serious runaway spinoff potential (think: Flavor Of Love meets Funky Brewster) and we’re totally psyched for a season of uncensored streaking and girl-on-girl action.

The rebellious rocker recently sat down with PYNK to spill about sex, stripping, and her new single, “Super Kinda Psycho Sexy Love.”

You’ve been in NY for a while now. What’s your living situation like? I have an apartment in Los Angeles, but I record everything in New York so I’m sleeping on couches, including LaLa’s. How’d you meet LaLa? I met her while I was at Clark Atlanta University through a mutual friend. She was on the radio station in Atlanta. After I graduated, I moved to New York for music and acting, but I really didn’t have a plan. I was staying all the way upstate in Rockland County and my friend Erica invited me to come stay with her in New Jersey — I didn’t even know that LaLa was her roommate. I just never left. I met Dice a couple of weeks later, when she came to stay. There were about 10 of us in that apartment and we all fought over the couch. I use to try and sneak in La’s bed before she got home so that I would already be asleep and she wouldn’t kick me out. How long have you been making music? I’ve been recording for six years now, but since the show, it’s starting to pop off like I want it to. I’ve been recording for a while, but I’ve been writing all my life. How long have you been playing the guitar? Eight years. I’m left handed, so I learned how to play the guitar upside down because the girl who taught me was right handed and she couldn’t teach me any the other way. I play better are upside down. Describe your sound and its evolution? It’s always been funky, but poppy and fun — very much teen angst. Everything I’ve always wanted to say, I’m going to say it through my music. If you take punk, pop and the streets, and put it together, that’s what my stuff sounds like. Think of Cee Lo as a female artist or No Doubt, but a lot more urban. Extremely MTV-friendly. How has being on the show changed your life? I was a bit hesitant to do the show at first, but I realized once you expose yourself for everyone to

59

see, it’s like walking around naked in front of your lover for the first time. Why do you need to be nervous the second and the third time? Ever since the finale episode there have been a lot more producers reaching out to me, a lot more people taking me seriously. It’s been a blessing, and I love it. I’m going to take advantage of it as much as possible. What are you working on now? I’ve been performing and recording a mixtape. I am not signed to anybody right now, so I feel like this is a good time for me to be uninhibited. In regards to artistic limitations, I have none. I want to be very honest about who I am. As eccentric, crazy, and out of the box as I am, I’m still very relatable. What’s the point of doing it if you’re not relating to anybody? Are you dating? No, I’m not dating — I’m dating my music. I don’t want to date. *Sigh* It’s the truth honestly, I’m not dating any body, I’m not seeing anybody, I’m not f@#*ing anybody, I’m not sexting anyone. What kind of girls do you like? I just like a good girl. I don’t have a preference. I just like a good person, somebody whose goal oriented, somebody who’s not selfish, giving, open, someone who keep themselves up, smells good, somebody that’s not going to kill me in my sleep. But that’s not even on my radar right now. I’m on pause in regards to a relationship. I’m very much married to music. I don’t even have the time to be emotionally responsible, and I feel bad, but it is what it is. That’s mature... It’s tragic maturity. Where you out in high school? No, in high school I had a boyfriend to make myself seem normal, as a lot of people did. I was having sex in high school, but not a lot. I wasn’t into it, and I was still trying to discover who I was as an individual, let alone who I was sexually. I was blessed to grow up not having to hide who I was. I didn’t hide

it to anyone but myself, honestly. I was able to talk to my mother about everything that I felt. When I was younger, I had a crush on a girl. When I was in fifth grade, I think I told my mom I had a girlfriend. In seventh grade, I had a boyfriend. You always come across uninitiated even with you style, is that you or your stylist? The direction of the photo shoot was to glam Po out, which is the opposite of who I am. I was hesitant because I wear Doc Martins, jeans, t-shirts, scarves and hats, and I always have on sunglasses. They wanted to do the complete opposite of what I am. I had two choices: I could either look uncomfortable, or I could actually own it and celebrate that part of my life. I have a pretty good-looking body — why not celebrate it? Own it. What can we expect in the near future for you? You can expect an album, you can expect another season of the show, a couple of indie film projects I’ve done. My background is in television and film production, so I haven’t given that up. It’s a part of who I am. You mentioned being afraid of the cameras at first, but you seem like a natural star? You have to be like, “Fuck it, this is me. I like crawfish and crabs. I’m 5’4’’. I’m from the south. I had a stuttering problem. And I want be a fucking artist. My name is Po. Fuck you if you don’t like it.” Once you let those inhibitions go, everything else is irrelevant. I owe it to the audience that’s watching; I owe it to all those little girls; I owe it to all those people who feel like geeks and weirdos, I owe it to them to let them know that this is cool. You don’t have to be a part of the masses. What everyone sees on TV is me celebrating the fact that I’ve owned that. I’m not going to apologize for who I am, and I’m not going to apologize for who I want to be.

PYNK TUNES:

TOP 10 LIST

By: Candice Jones

It’s a known fact that PYNK girls are music lovers! Here’s a list of the albums that are currently in heavy rotation on our iPods and have quickly become the soundtrack to our fab lives.

< Nas’ “Life Is Good”

Nas has returned after a long hiatus to bring us the gift of real hip-hop! “Life Is Good” transports us back to the feel-good ‘90’s era while still managing to K.I.C. (keep it current).

61

< Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange”

Frank Ocean’s debut, “Channel Orange” plays like a diary. It is a cathartic body of work that anyone with a heart can relate to. If you’ve ever loved and lost...you’ll love this album.

< Jade Novah “Shades of Jade”

Rising R&B star, Jade Novah gives us a taste of what she has to bring to the genre with “Shades of Jade.” This mixtape is comprised of fresh Jade Novah material as well as covers that you’re guaranteed to like more than the original.

< Emeli Sande

“Our Version of Events”

< Elle Varner

“Perfectly Imperfect”

R&B songstress Elle Varner is the new kid on the block. However, her refreshingly fun lyrics paired with her raspy vocals and some stellar old school production makes this album a must have.

< Ginette Claudette

“Everything’s Coming Up Roses”

This Scottish-born chanteusse brings us unexpectedly timeless music on her debut. Her strong and soulful vocals layered over beautiful ballads makes this album one of the best of 2012.

If R&B with edge is what you seek, Ginette Claudette’s new mixtape will definitely fill that void. With outstanding vocal ability and lyrics that slap you in the face, Ginette Claudette is poised to bring a whole new dimension to R&B music.

< Melanie Fiona

“P.O.Y.B.L.”

“The MF Life”

Melanie has become a PYNK fave! On “The MF Life” she manages to cover all the complexities of love with little flair and a lot of attitude! This album’s a definite keeper.

< Venor

“Rain Season”

Up and coming singer/songwriter/producer, Venor, puts his emotions on display with “Rain Season”. This debut tells the tale of the classic urban romance and is perfect for the lover in you.

< Melody Thornton

This former Pussycat Doll is back with a vengeance! On “P.O.Y.B.L. (Piss On Your Black List)”, Melody flips the bird to her haters (musically, of course), while giving us bad a** music to rock out to.

< Usher

“Looking For Myself”

Ursher, as we affectionately call him, returns with his brand of an R&B/EDM hybrid album. “Looking For Myself” gives us the best of both worlds - classic and current Usher.

WHAT TAMAR WANTS TAMAR GETS

Photography by: Fadil Berisha / Interview by: RaVal Davis / Story by: Genel Ambrose

This month’s cover girl, Tamar Braxton, kicks back with us to chit chat about her hopes for motherhood, her love affair with her husband, her real-life relationship with Mary J. Blige and her rules for heating things up in the bedroom. 63

You often refer to yourself as she. Why is that? I feel that as long as people are talking about you, something has to be going right. So I say “she, because they are talking about me anyway.

You have the new show and are a favorite among reality stars. What else is going on behind the scenes that you would like to share with your fans? Everything is good. I am a little tired these days as Vince and I just started the popsicle process for in vitro fertilization. I want to have a family and we have been trying for a long time. The hormone shot makes me a little tired. But I am really excited about having a child one day soon. I realized I wanted to have a child when Vince was sick in the hospital. I love him so much and it was such a hard time for me. He is my rock. I was extremely nervous the entire time and I thought if I lost him tomorrow all I would have are photos. And I realized that I wanted more than that. A child would be a living reminder of our love.

Our relationship is very honest - we don’t keep any secrets from each other.

There are so many women that are looking to have children via in vitro, have your fans reached out to you via twitter to share their stories? No, not yet. We haven’t really talked about it a lot because this is the beginning. So you have the exclusive. Maybe further along as it begins to get more serious, then we will talk more about it. Is that the lingo - “popsicle babies?” Explain the process for our readers. A popsicle baby (In Vitro) is when you have your eggs injected with hormones. The eggs are extracted and then put in the freezer. Do you have any names in mind? *wink* You are pretty close to Mary J. Blige. What is your relationship like? My sisters are my best friends for the most part but I’m also very close to Mary J Blige. When Vince was in the hospital she was so supportive. She and Kendu are the best. They made sure to check in on me and prayed with me for Vince’s recovery. Mary is such a genuine and kind-hearted person I’m blessed to be able to call her a real friend. Not an

“industry friend.” People are really excited about your spin-off show. Can you explain to us what this show will be about? It’s more focused on my relationship with Vince our conflicts such as him being my husband and manager. I feel this show will be an opportunity to show people another side of myself. I am looking forward to it airing and everyone tuning in. All the public gets to see is the loud and opinionated version, what does this other side of Tamar all about? When I am at home, I am Vincent’s wife. Sometimes you can’t always be loud and opinionated. You have to learn when it is the right time to take the backseat, especially when you have a husband. Seeing the way you and your husband interacted at the PYNK shoot was so different than what I thought it would be. How long have you guys been together? We have been together for nine years. Our relationship is very honest. We don’t have any secrets from each other. He doesn’t judge me

and I don’t judge him.

How did you know Vince was the one? I wasn’t checking for Vince at first. He and I were friends. But it wasn’t until I found out that he was seeing someone that it hit me. I realized I had feelings for him! When he told me that his relationship at the time was coming to an end, I knew it was my time to make my feelings known. After that relationship ended. He and I started dating and eventually married. What is your favorite date spot? To be honest, I love Disney Land. Vince and I always have such a good time there. We love going on dates there so much that when we have a little girl, I would probably name her Disney. How do you keep things spicy for Vince? What advice do you have for our readers? Always keep it cute for your man. I go to bed the same way I did when we first started sleeping next to each other- CUTE! I do NOT

Her stint as host of BET’s 106 and Park might have come to an end but Rocsi insists that there is much more on the horizon. The Honduran-born personality sits down with us to talk future, fashion and favorites.

Q: You have moved on from BET. How do you feel? A: I am very excited because BET was a great chapter in my life and I loved every minute of it, but I am looking forward to the next chapter. Q: Did you always want a career in entertainment? A: No - not at all. Every little girl dreams about being an actress one day or something like that but I was the complete opposite. I wanted to be a whale trainer and swim with them and everything. It wasn’t until college that I became interested in entertainment and radio. Q: You have a movie coming out with Lynn Whitfield. Tell us about that. A: The movie with Lynn Whitfield is a suspense-thriller and it is called “The Last Letter.” Tatiana Ali also stars in it. It’s so good. I cannot wait for everyone to see this movie. Q: What can people expect from Rocsi in the future? A: There are a lot of things going on, I am writing a script. I have the first one done and I am so excited. Q: What drives you? A: My desire to be successful and be able to support my family - and also make a mark in this industry. That is what drives me. Q: In 10 years, where do you see yourself? A: Honestly, I see myself being very successful and I plan on having a family one day while continually working. Q: What’s on your bucket list? A: More traveling, having my own star on the Walk of Fame and winning an Emmy or an Oscar.

74

Q: To date, what is your favorite on screen moment? A: I have a big crush on Lenny Kravitz. On 106 & Park, he gave me a shout out on video for my birthday. I was really touched. Q: Favorite celebrity interview? A: Madonna - there is no need to explain that. Q: Who are some of your mentors in the industry, or just successful women you look up to? A: The number one person I look up to is my mother - she has always been my role model and supporter. As far as women in the industry, there are strong women like Jennifer Lopez, Lauren Whitaker, and Tyra Banks that I admire. Q: What advice can you offer young women who want a career in entertainment? A: Know what you are getting yourself into, have a thick skin, and be prepared that someone will judge you for being a woman. Make sure you know your craft well and do not let anyone second guess your work. Q: Is there anyone in the industry you are really close to? A: Throughout the years, I have been able to become friends with a lot of people in the industry like Lala Anthony, Gabrielle Union, Tyrese, and Ludacris. They were my friends from my radio days before BET. Q: Let’s talk about love and relationships. Do you think it is harder to date men in the industry or a regular guy? A: Both have advantages and disadvantages. Some people want to date someone in the industry because that person will understand the day-to- day. Sometimes, you might want a regular guy because it will help maintain a certain sense of privacy. To each her own, really. Q: Do you think it’s hard to date when you’re a celebrity? A: I think guys will be intimidated when you are in this industry. So for me it is very hard. Q: How would you describe your style? A: My style is casual chic, I like to pair jeans and t-shirts with amazing heels. If I am attending a special event, I like to keep it very lady-like. Q: Who’s your favorite shoe designer? A: Christian Louboutin. Q: Where are your favorite places to shop? A: I shop a lot at Intermix. Shopbop.com is one of my favorite online shopping sites.

PYNK

DOPE

CHICK

Story By: Genel Ambrose

She’s an LA girl by nature and a hip hop girl by heart. Fellow female DJ’s make room, radio host turned MTV personality Devi Dev is making a name for herself by repping hard for the west coast on the east coast and becoming New York’s newest sweetheart in the process. Devon Anjelica, bka Devi Dev, has successfully turned her gift for gab into an enviable career. As an on-air personality, she’s had revealing sit-downs and provocative interviews with some of the biggest names in hip hop including Dr. Dre, Kanye West and Quincy Jones.

77

DEVI DEV “When I was a kid I used to get written up constantly for talking in class,” she recalls. Growing up in a single parent home, Dev grew up as a latch key kid. In college, she majored in broadcast journalism with the aspiration of reporting the news. “At first, I wanted to be a journalist and work in the trenches. But I always dreamed about being on the radio.” She got her start in college radio at Cal State Northridge then worked the overnight shift at 93.5 KDAY before climbing the ranks. Early on in her career, she also worked random jobs at Victoria Secret, a car dealership, the LA Parks Department, and a jewelry store “slinging rolex’s” and at one point sold her car and rode the bus two hours to get to work. At 27, she’s conquered several markets – having hosted shows in LA and Houston. Now co-hosting with Sway on his morning show on Shade 45, Dev also recently landed a gig on MTV’s Hip Hop POV. She headlines the weekly show alongside the Charlamagne of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, Amanda Seales, Somaya Krishnamurthy and Def Jam music exec Bu Thiam. “We are all very opinionated,” she says. “I definitely hold it down for west coast hip hop. I am passionate and enthusiastic about it because I don’t think it gets the respect, understanding and attention it deserves.” Of course life in the spotlight comes with a bit of controversy and not everyone can say they’ve had a Kardashian threatening them with a law suit. Last spring, Dev released a mixtape with Terrance Dean called the Sex EP which unbeknownst to Dev featured Kim Kardashian’s bare breasts on the cover. “I don’t recognize people by their nipples,” she says jokingly recalling the cease and desist email she received from Kris Jenner and her lawyer. “The breasts did not have any arms, stomach or head attached. How

was I supposed to know? If I saw a picture of mine, I wouldn’t be able to pick my own out of a line up - let alone someone else’s!” TMZ, The View and other media outlets eventually learned of the story and reached out to Dev for interviews. Like any Dope Chic, Dev used the publicity to gain notoriety and released a follow-up mixtape with Dean entitled, Sex EP 2.0: Cease & Desist. (Take that, Kim!) High-five, Dev! During the photo shoot, we played a game of Questions with this month’s certified Dope Chic: You never leave home without? A camera. I am obsessed with capturing moments. If you weren’t a radio personality you’d be..? A social worker. Pumps or tennis shoes? Flip flops. I am all about fancy sandals. Favorite artist? Rihanna. She is herself and keeps it real. I love that. Indie artists that no one should sleep on? Dom Kennedy, Freddie Gibbs, and producers Urba n Noize Little known fact? I was extremely obsessed with Tupac as a child. I dedicated a part of my bedroom as a shrine to him complete with candles. I did a project on Tupac’s poetry that is still on display in a glass box in the library of my high school. A woman’s greatest asset? Smart is sexy. A woman can do or get anything she wants to with the power of her mind and how she uses it. Favorite clothing designer? Topshop is my guilty pleasure right now. And I love Alexander McQueen. What do you think makes you admirable? My favorite thing about myself is my ability to step out on faith. It has changed my life and has never led me wrong. I never sacrifice my happiness. I have never settled for anything less than happiness. People will try to discourage but you have to stay true to what your vision is for yourself and whatever your ‘happy place’ is.

THIS SEASON’S OFFICIAL FASHION FORECAST:

PYNKPREMONITIONS

Twice a year, in everyone’s favorite concrete jungle, the stars and the stylish collide – to create magic. This NYFW, we consulted our trusted Swarovski crystal ball, to let you know what to expect, what to rock, what to see, and of course, what to bookmark!

CAPRICORN

You prefer that your feet remain firmly on the ground, and resist getting carried away by emotion (though you’re known for your fantastic sense of humor). Your view of beauty is more practical than passionate, and you’ve got the panache to make it big as a critic, brand executive, or editor-in-chief. Just make sure you keep your pessimism in check, so you don’t unnecessarily burst too many bubbles (including your own).

THIS WEEK: Wear – Barely burnished browns See – Ruffian Refresh – businessoffashion.com

ARIES

Your intoxicating mix of quick wit, courage, and above all, high energy is the magic elixir that will help you to secure a spot on the hottest guest lists in town. You’ve got a love of spontaneity that perpetually draws you to new experiences, and styles that lend themselves to quick changes.

THIS WEEK: Wear – Ripe, autumn reds See – Chris Benz Refresh – stylebubble.typepad.com

81

AQUARIUS

In your hands, Aquarius, even the most outlandish dreams may become reality, because you tirelessly plan ways to make them come true. You’re original and inventive, but have a tendency toward the unpredictable that can throw admirers (or potential investors) off at times. If you’re looking to take things to the next level with your own projects, you’ll have to find a way to balance shock value with authentic value.

THIS WEEK: Wear – True, bright turquoise tones See – J. Mendel Refresh – heycrazy.wordpress.com

TAURUS

You love nothing more than feeling like a natural woman, whether your preferences run toward the eco-friendly end of the spectrum, or you love the feel of skins on skin. Fashion Week is the time of year when your inner angel (fueled by warmhearted patience) wars most furiously with your inner devil (ruled by self-indulgent greed), but fret not – under the September sun, good will prevail.

THIS WEEk: Wear – Layers of pretty, pretty pink See – Organic by John Patrick Refresh – makeluxurycount.com

PISCES

You love a puzzle, don’t you, Pisces? The enigmatic intrigues you like nothing else – hence your affinity for labyrinthine designs. At times, your selflessness and unwavering compassion may lead others to think you’re less worldly than you are. Never let them convince you that you’re anything but the sophisticated style maven that you are.

THIS WEEK: Wear – Soft, sorbet-toned blue-greens See – Chado Ralph Rucci Refresh – wheredidyougetthat.com

GEMINI

Since you so love multitasking, calendar balancing, and project juggling – it’s no wonder that this is (in your fine opinion) the most wonderful time of the year! Your expert communication skills, and superlative adaptability will convince at least a few members of the harried Lincoln Center hordes, to find method (and enjoyment) in the madness.

THIS WEEK: Wear – Ethereal greens See – Diesel Black Gold Refresh – thesartorialist.com

CANCER

Of all the signs, you’re the most patriotic, so if you’re a native New Yorker – you’re surely one of NYFW’s greatest boosters. Try to take any nay-saying from natives of the other fashion capitals in stride, and don’t let gloominess cloud the sunshine that emanates so naturally from you.

THIS WEEK: Wear – Magnetic silver See – Ralph Lauren Refresh – refinery29.com

LIBRA

Lovely Libra, you may be the chicest sign under the sun, courtesy your penchant for the finer things in life and your disdain for fashion victimization. The whirl of the week may aggravate your indecisive nature, but ultimately, your charming idealism will lead you into to all the right shows.

THIS WEEK: Wear – True blues See – Cushnie et Ochs Refresh – annadellaruso.com

LEO

Hello, Lioness! It’s Fashion Week again – the perfect time to indulge your affinity for the lush life. Ditch the usual haunts, drag your sartorial soldiers-in-arms to boites off the beaten path, and stake your fashion(world)-forward claim. All that glitters may not be gold, but sometimes the most unlikely finds just need a little burnishing to reveal their glow.

THIS WEEK: Wear – Lush, luxe, gold See – Stephen Burrows Refresh – garancedore.fr/en

SCORPIO

You’d rather plumb mysterious depths, to find something meaningful, than focus on the obvious – no matter how dazzling the item at hand. Your magnetism is reflected in your unique sense of style, but you tend to be a tad obsessive whenever you uncover something new. You may have discovered the latest “it” bag, but you can’t dictate who is worthy of wearing it.

THIS WEEK: Wear – Shades that span the dark red-tomaroon spectrum See – Made in Africa: by Arise Refresh – fashionbombdaily.com

VIRGO

You, Darling Virgo, love all things wholesome – from haute-healthy cuisine to the cleanest of classic lines. You tend to eschew trends for the modest and the practical, but you have unbridled affection for a meticulous cut – whether it’s found on a traditional blazer, or an avant garde dress.

THIS WEEK: Wear – Earthy shades of green and rich brown See - Narcisco Rodriguez Refresh – afrobella.com

SAGITTARIUS

With your tactile nature, Sag, you’re more about the “feel” than the “look”, and would prefer to be backstage perusing the racks than watching the models walk the runway. Your senses may feast more satisfactorily if you focus on intimate presentations, during NYWW, instead of overthe-top spectacles.

THIS WEEK: Wear – Sumptuous purple shades See – L’Wren Scott Refresh – afractionoffashion.blogspot.com

Rewind

DIAHANNE CARROLL BY: Kim Rose

Scene One: INT. – Tight shot of a cavalcade of designer luggage hauled in by a small army of hired help. The camera’s slow gaze upward, from heel to hairdo, accentuates the stature of a stunning star, as if looking up to a legend. And rightfully so. It’s Diahann Carroll, after all, lost within her iconic Dominique Deveraux character in the 1980s primetime soap, “Dynasty.” In this, her grand entrance scene, Diahann as Dominique boldly announces: “I intend to have a memorable stay.” Did she ever. Her elegant yet audacious introduction is every bit definitive of the inimitable career of Miss Diahann Carroll.

Born in The Bronx in 1935, the multi-talented actress and singer is credited with clearing some major hurdles in TV, film and stage. She appeared in Carmen Jones and Porgy and Bess, two of the earliest all-Black major studio films. Then she scooped up a Tony Award in 1962 for the musical, “No Strings.” But it was her role as the title character in the 1968 TV hit,“Julia,” that put Diahann in history books. No Black actress had ever starred as a non-stereotypical, professional woman in a TV series before, and she embodied the character of the widow/single mother/nurse with understated grace, winning a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nomination. Starring in classics like 1974’s Claudine (for which she received an Oscar nod) and TV’s “Dynasty” and “The Colbys” in the ‘80s, Diahann Carroll established herself as a style icon. She possessed an unmatched sense of high fashion and sophistication, and her timeless beauty was a fixture in magazines and society pages, and she made waves as an Ebony Fashion Fair model. The decisive diva made no apologies for her penchant for fine living and handsome men (count ‘em, four husbands!); and even today, at age 76, she’s rarely photographed looking anything less than flawless. Though memorable TV-mom roles have defined the twilight years of her career (“A Different World,” “Grey’s Anatomy”), that haughty foreshadowing on “Dynasty” was spot on: her remarkable six- decade Hollywood reign is unforgettable..
