VILLIGER HALL SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY PZS Architects completed Villiger Hall in July 2012. This student residence hall is 116,500 square feet with space for 415 occupants. The facility includes study lounges, social lounges, laundry room, and kitchen and fitness center. The buildings massing and stone exterior keep in line with the traditional feel of the campus. The building is sited to respect the adjacent chapel and form an open space for student activities. The design combines a granite base and limestone base with a field of coursed ashlar stone blend. Limestone was used at the building’s entrance and to clad the study towers at each end of the building. Limestone
bands surrounds the windows, and were also used to break down the 6-story mass of the building. Each floor includes lounges and study areas and common bathroom areas. The facility includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, buildingwide wireless networking and laundry facilities. The hall, which maintains around the clock security, was constructed to “maximize student interaction,” according to Director of Residence Life John Jeffrey. Positioned at the corner of Cardinal and City Avenues, Villiger Hall serves as the southern gateway to the campus, pathways link the campus to Maguire Campus.

MITCHELL & HILARIE MORGAN HALL TEMPLE UNIVERSITY PZS Architects is part of the project team who designed Temple University’s newest residential and dining complex, Mitchell and Hilarie Morgan Hall located at the corner of North Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue. The complex is comprised of 1,275 student beds organized in several suite configurations in two major building elements. The high rise tower element includes 24 residential floors and the midrise element includes eight residential floors, both situated above a public/lobby level. Both the Tower and Midrise lobbies are entered from an elevated Terrace that was constructed over a plaza deck above a parking/service level situated at and below street level. The site encompasses an entire city block.
The complex also includes a 40,000 SF three level Dining Pavilion which houses a two level food court with a multipurpose dining room/ballroom located above, overlooking the Terrace. The dining facility offers a wide variety of dining concepts from organic farm-to-table or global Asian cuisine to authentic South Philly cheesesteaks and serves over 3,000 meals per day. The primary goal of this facility was to house students, but just as important, the University wanted to provide a better sense of community for the students. The facility is one of the largest student residential complexes in the city, and has added to the Philadelphia skyline, while providing a sense of community to the students at Temple University. PZS Architects was the Associate Architect for this project, which MGA Architects was the Design Architect.
DIVERSIFIED DINING
When developing the dining pavilion PZS worked closely with Sodexo, Temple’s food service vendor. The goal was to accommodate multiple food service concepts on multiple levels. The terrace level includes a variety of cusines and the food concepts were located to minimize congestion, and to separate the dining area into a quiet area adjacent to the landscaped courtyard.
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY changed the skyline by developing this 27-story tower, as seen to the right. The tower and surrounding complex also provide a gateway to Temple’s main campus from Broad Street. The area welcomes students into a courtyard where they can eat and interact.
WIDENER UNIVERSITY STUDENT RESIDENCE HALL PZS Architects completed the design of a new student residence hall for Widener University as part of a design competition in 2014. The 72,000 SF four story building accommodates 208 beds in a combination of four person suites and two person dorm style rooms. The L-shaped building was strategically positioned on the site to create a hierarchy of spaces ranging from public to private. The private space is further defined as a protected interior courtyard with space for a volley ball court and open green grass areas providing opportunity for student recreation. The entrance is accessed from a covered walkway, which connects the protected exterior green courtyard to the residential plaza. The building also features a street level retail component. The retail space includes a circular outdoor plaza at the corner of the building, helping to redefine the area as an entrance and establish street life. This building was designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification.
U N I V E R S I T Y O F O T TAWA MIXED-USE STUDENT HOUSING DEVELOPMENT PZS Architects was retained by a private developer as a Student Housing Consultant to provide support for the 9-story mixed-use student residence building, with retail 13,100 SF retail space, a 2,800 SF fitness center and 4,660 SF student amenity area on the ground level. The ground floor retail space is intended for street-oriented retail activity (e.g., coffee shop, restaurant, personal service uses, retail food store) which would serve the needs of the student residents and the local community. The project will contain 180 suite-style units spread over eight floors, with each unit featuring studio and twobedroom configurations and shared bathroom, kitchen and living space. The design features one level of underground parking with 62 parking spaces to accommodate vehicles for resident, visitor and retail parking, as well as three spaces at grade. Secure storage for 100 bicycles is proposed on the ground floor. This project was designed to obtain LEED certification.
R AY A N D J O A N K R O C C O M M U N I T Y C E N T E R T H E S A LVAT I O N A R M Y The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center is located in North Philadelphia. This 130,000 square foot facility features worship and performing arts center, teen activities center and game room, aquatics center, sports training, recreation center and recording studio. The Salvation Army Kroc Aquatics (SAKA) swim team is Philadelphia’s premier competitive swimming program and one of the top teams on the East Coast. This facility earned a “Citation of Merit” from the AIA Pennsylvania. The center serves as a hub of community activity in what was formerly a blighted urban landscape. According to the AIA Jurors, the building “appears to devote all its energy to creating a great experience for the kids who use it.”
The center was designed with LEED certification in mind; however, the Salvation Army chose not to pursue the certification process, instead they chose to use the funding (which would have been required to complete the certification process) for the programming at the facility. Approximately 95% of the existing material was recycled and reused on-site including concrete foundations soil and asphalt paving. Materials from demolition provided the fill under the building alleviating the load on the region’s landfills. Passive solar shading, a 2-acre white roof, high performance glass and mechanical systems were used to reduce energy consumption. PZS Architects worked with MGA Architects and Andropogon Associates on this project. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Completed in 2010 130,000 square feet $ 72 Million
JIMMY MORAN POOL This 10-lane, competition-grade pool is designed for recreational swimming, lessons, water polo and competitive swim meets. ADA-accessible spectator seating is available for up to 290 guests, and poolside bleachers and lounge seats can host up to 5 swim teams.
DYNAMIC SPACEs PZS designed the gymnasium as a versatile and accommodating space. The lofty, sunlit room can serve to host sports games and activities, as well as large assemblies, presentations and dinners.
MODERN FITNESS STUDIO The 13,100 square foot fitness center features two floors of fitness equipment and on-site trainers. Free weights, stretching areas, an indoor cycling studio and two adjacent exercise studios complement the abundance of cardio and circuit training equipment.
