FOREWORD DR DOMINIQUE FALLA DEPUTY DIRECTOR LEARNING AND TEACHING QUEENSLAND COLLEGE OF ART, GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY
Out With A Bang is the last of its kind. This publication presents the final showcase of the outstanding work of graduates from the Bachelor of Digital Media program, Queensland College of Art (QCA). The Queensland College of Art remains one of Australia’s premier creative institutions, distinguished by its tradition of continuous commitment to art and design education for over one hundred years. The outgoing Bachelor of Digital Media, Bachelor of Digital Media with Honours, Bachelor of Digital Media/Bachelor of Business are all Gold Coast QCA degrees dedicated to interdisciplinary practice. As part of a five-campus University capturing the dynamic growth of the Southeast Queensland corridor, the Bachelor of Digital Media was a key part of this growth at the Gold Coast campus. The degree has since been phased out to make way for unified cross-campus offerings. Part of our commitment to creative education is to provide our students with real-world industry experience. Our in-house Liveworm Design Studio and The Argus online visual journalism magazine are principal assets in ensuring our graduate students are industry ready. Beyond showcasing the work of our Gold Coast graduates, this publication uncovers innovative practitioners and creative entrepreneurs. We are once again very proud of the work showcased in the pages of the 2018 graduate catalogue. It continues to demonstrate to the world that the Gold Coast is an exciting and vibrant place to live, work and study. The graduate designers, artists, filmmakers, photographers, and creative innovators featured in this publication continue to make their mark on the national and international stage. The QCA is always excited to publish a yearly catalogue, as it acknowledges the outstanding work of our graduates, alumni, colleagues and peers and this final showcase from the Bachelor of Digital Media ensures the students will go Out With A Bang!

MARIANA DUMONT ROTSTEIN I am a Brazilian who lived in China for four years, travelled to almost every continent in the world, then moved to the Gold Coast to follow my passion, graphic design. Due to this, I have experienced a variety of different cultures, which made me grow up to have a multicultural background and visual reference from all over the world. That has made me a very open-minded creative and versatile designer. Expressing myself through images has always been a pattern in my life. I used to draw on any surface possible, including my arms and legs — to the point of getting an actual tattoo of one of my illustrations.
After I first heard about graphic design, I knew right away it was the path I wanted to follow. I now have a Diploma in Design and a Bachelor in Digital Media (Graphic Design). “Do what you love, and you won’t have to work a day in your life”, right?

I feel that there is always new skills and techniques to learn as a designer, and that’s a challenge I’m willing to take. I love to create illustrations of all kinds, my favourite being stippling, which takes an intense amount of patience and concentration which are key characteristics of a designer. JAN PIMPING If there is one expression that can best describe what I tend to do it would be a catch 22 — simple yet complicated, creative yet rigid. Naturally, I prefer for things to make sense (most of the time) which is why I am drawn to designing things that have meaning or a history behind them. I believe this is the reason why I find myself immersed in doing brand identities in a lot of my projects. Whenever I’m not doing these, I’m usually doing something, somewhere but not here.

DAVID SWARTZ I can finally say that I’m a university certified graphic designer. Now I just need to figure out what exactly graphic designer is? Since working professionally the last six months, I have found this term unparalleled in its vagueness, but I think this is what will keep it so fresh and interesting for me. Personally, I love illustration, specifically drawing stylised portraits of friends, family and my own personal experiences. I think to be successful in this industry, you need to always stay true to yourself. My best work has always had a personal dynamic to it where I am able to inject emotions and stories into my designs.
In the future, I would really love to get into hand drawn animation and boy oh boy it is going to take some practice. My dream job would be working for Pixar or Cartoon Network.

LUCY TASKER If made into a venn diagram, my work would sit in-between cute, retro, and the imperfections of the handmade style I channel into my wobbly illustrations. This year I have established my own little design brand, peachy studio. I craft delicious, lovely things, while keeping ethical practices at the forefront of my designs.

ALEC ZHI QIAN YONG I remember when I was young, my mother would change the placement of the furniture to give our home a new ambience. Surprisingly, this always gave me a curious feeling even now as an adult. I love how change of space can be impacted by a rearrangement of objects. It can give people the feeling of new-ness. I want to recreate the experience for people which is why I chose to be an Interior Designer. The butterfly table was inspired by Edward Lorenz’s chaos theory in which no matter what decision is made there will always be consequences.
Every organism was made randomly hence, creating a unique shape. This is a hanging table which could be fixed to a ceiling in a luxurious entrance hall of a mansion or a leisure space of grand communal hall. aleczyong45@gmail.com lecolnstudio.com
