3rd Annual Word N Sound International Youth Poetry + Live Music Festival 27 Nov - 1 Dec 2013 Cape Town | Johannesburg | Soweto
LIVE CREATIVE HUSTLES The final week of November 2013 will mark a highlight of the South African Poetry calendar, as the 3rd Annual Word N Sound International Youth Poetry + Live Music Festival gets underway. Word N Sound presents the premiere poetry showcase in all of Johannesburg, however, for their third festival, they are taking it onto an interprovincial scale. Adding a Cape Town leg to the Johannesburg based Festival, the four day spoken word feast kicks off at the District Six Homecoming Centre where local poets will share a stage with Catherine Labiran and Harry Baker from the United Kingdom. This will be the first year the Festival expands to another city. The Festival then moves to Johannesburg to set Newtown ablaze. On the 29th and 30th of November, some of the best local and international music and poetry acts will converge at the Market Theatre Laboratory in Newtown.
WORKSHOPS
The second series of free creative sessions for 18 to 25’s kicks off this month in partnership with Word N Sound International Youth Poetry and Live Music Festival. The popular Live Creative Sessions, brought to you by Live Magazine SA and British Council Connect ZA, return this month with a brand new line-up of free monthly sessions in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Titled, Live Creative Hustles, the first sessions will be hosted as part of the 3rd Annual Word N Sound International Youth Poetry and Live Music Festival on the 27 and 28 November in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The sessions will be focused around Digital Tools for the New Age Artist and feature panel discussions, poetry performances as well as the opportunity to network with professionals over refreshments.
Cape Town District Six Homecoming Centre Wednesday 27 November 2.30pm – 5.30pm Free
In the age of internet and social media, young writers are faced with both unlimited opportunities and new challenges. The sessions will explore how new platforms influence poetry and literature in SA and the UK today, as well as how they can be used to stimulate and grow interaction between the two creative economies. The Live Creative Hustles will also play host to two UK poets from the award-winning Roundhouse’s Poetry Collective which supports gifted poets from across London aged 18-25. The 15-stong collective get together once a week to develop original material under the guidance of celebrated beat poet Polarbear. Live Creative Hustles are a monthly platform for up-and-coming creatives aged 18 to 25 years to engage with established industry professionals and arts practitioners, receive creative and career advice as well as build relationships with professionals.
