is one of those rare females. She is the offspring of an old show heifer (Sim/Angus) I showed back in my day. I bred the heifer to a Limousin bull, and 23C was born. She will be 16 years old this spring. I then bred 23C to Broker (Limousin) for her first calf. DSUL Too Sweet 55E will turn 14 this spring. Too Sweet’s second calf was DSUL Sweetness 232H, who was the Champion Limousin Female in Denver 2000. She turns 10 this spring. DSUL takes pride in our cow families with longevity and predictability. All three females here produced a slew of champions (Limousin & Crossbred), and all three are currently in ET. We could literally write a book on this great cow family’s success. Yes, cow families do make all the difference, and here’s the proof...

feed costs are so important. As corn prices have increased, some feedlot operators have chosen to feed lower energy diets and/or to shorten the feeding period producing lighter weight cattle and/or lower quality grade cattle. However, an increasing low-choiceselect quality grade spread suggests feedlot managers should maintain dietary energy density and continue to feed cattle to qualify for low choice or higher quality grades. Back in the August issue we provided two tables showing commodity prices then (2006) and now (2008). These tables (shown again as tables 1 and 2) are still relevant even though corn and bean prices are considerably lower than the summer highs. However, while corn and bean prices have decreased, many of the co-product prices have remained high. Based on these two tables, I have shown in tables 3 – 9 several alternative diets that lower feed costs while maintaining similar cattle performance. Hopefully, these diets can provide innovative ideas feedlot managers and cowcalf operators can adopt for a specific program to lower feed costs.
The older I get, the more I realize the less I know about the beef cattle industry. Life seemed more clear-cut back in 1972 when I graduated with a BS. At least, back then I thought I knew most, if not all of the answers. Take the choice-select quality grade spread, for example. Historically, as the fed cattle price has increased so has the low choice-select spread increased ($6 - $12 differential); and, as the price of finished cattle has decreased, so has the choice-select spread decreased ($1 - $3 difference). Back in the summer when fed cattle were in the high $90’s the choice-select spread was $8 - $9. Then as fed cattle prices began to decrease in early fall, the choice-select spread narrowed to $2 $3. Now, in late November, as finished cattle prices have continued to slide into the $80’s the choice-select spread has grown larger and currently is ranging between $9 - $12 (on Friday, November 21, the reported spread was $11.65). One conclusion is the American consumer, whether good times or bad, has a preference for high quality beef. This is one more reason (lower fed cattle prices, higher feed prices) why alternative diets to increase

Oklahoma Club Calf Association - December ‘08
It was cold and bleak today, as we sorted cattle, tattooed and weaned, wormed and dehorned spring born calves. The cows are preg checked and out on corn stocks, bean stubble, along with anything else we can salvage to keep wintering cost low. Just three or four more fall born calves yet to arrive, but after the New Year, the January calves start arriving and we will still be AIing some of our fall calvers, all the while, we have steers and heifers in the barn to rinse, work hair and prepare for all the upcoming shows. Yes, it is a continuous, never ending job to really stay competitive, but it also is very satisfying and fulfilling that when we as families can do this together breed, raise and exhibit a champion. Those of us who are not fortunate enough to raise our own have the thrill of shopping and looking around the corner for that next great one and then spend a year finding, training and working with this calf to make him a champion. Probably nothing else our children can do demands more family teamwork, stick togetherness and dedication than does the art of feeding, fitting and showing a champion beef calf, whether it be a steer or heifer. As I write this letter, we are in the month of our winter show season, with all the big jackpots right on us as well as Phoenix, Denver and many others. Above all, let us not forget the envy of everyone our specters OYE, the Oklahoma Youth Expo, in Oklahoma City in March, billed as the worlds largest all junior show, where the good ones meet the great ones and the great ones meet the greater ones. The show where you walk out of the ring with a blue ribbon, you truly have something to be proud of and something to talk about the rest of your life. This is the show where the slap of the grand steer closes down, the point races on the past year for our OCCA members another year has come and gone, many jackpots and shows, many miles, many memories and many new friends that now we just naturally seem to call family, a journey like no other, you will ever experience, one you will cherish all of your adult life. I tell my kids, enjoy this now so you can enjoy it later, and just ask three generations before you in your family. Everybody keep this in mind. See you at the upcoming shows and OYE. Announcing a new opportunity for young cattle exhibitors and their families! The newly formed Missouri Club Calf Association invites YOU to get involved! As you may have heard, the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association has elected to radically reduce the number of shows allowed within their junior points program. Because of this, we have established a group of cattle producers from across the state, with a knowledge and passion for show cattle, to develop a large-scale points program, in addition to many of the shows already counted by the Missouri Cattlemen’s group. We believe that showing cattle helps develop responsibility in youth, and a valid points system will give recognition to juniors for their hard work and dedication to their projects. This system will be available to any junior showing in the state of Missouri, beginning January 1, 2009, and running until August 1, 2009, with only shows open to the entire state of Missouri eligible. By doing this, it will allow for an awards ceremony to be held at the Missouri State Fair, where many juniors are already present. Points will be awarded beginning the date membership dues are received.
Things to know..
• A website will be available as a way of communicating between the committee, shows, and exhibitors. • Each animal will be assigned an identification number to be used throughout the year as an attempt to eliminate any confusion when awarding points. • A minimal yearly membership fee will be charged with all the money covering program costs or awards for the juniors. • An official set of Rules & Regulations will apply and be enforced throughout the year. • Current point standings will be available at any time, either in print form or via the MCCA website. • A notice will be sent out in the state of Missouri with exact details of the program.
The MCCA is not-for-profit. This program has been created with only the best intentions for junior exhibitors in mind, but programs such as this are only a success if they receive support. Message from the Outgoing President... The Junior Nebraska Cattlemen are starting their 12th year and membership remains around 00 from across the state. Beginning with the December shows, our board has decided to require registration papers on all breed steers. Nebraska is actually one of the very last states to go with this rule and now we can divide out the purebreds from the percentage steers, as national breed associations already do. Another change coming is the merger into a multi-species junior organization. Details are being considered and each species will have their own board and advisors. Change is constant but to grow and expand is truly a blessing in these questionable economic times. The Case for Waiting Out The Storm Today’s financial markets are giving many investors cause to doubt the wisdom of investing in stocks. The many months of negative returns in most major markets have taken their toll on even the bravest investors. In order to put today’s very difficult events into some perspective, it may help to look back at what other people in other times may have experienced. TransOvaarticle Tips for a Successful Embryo Transfer Program Embryo transfer (ET) is a tool which many producers have utilized to multiply the elite genetics of their top females more rapidly than natural service or Artificial Insemination (AI). While breeding season is months away, now is the time that producers should think ahead and consider the management decisions that support an effective ET program. Many people who have been through the process of embryo collection and transfer realize the detailed preparation steps that need to be followed- as well as the many things that can go wrong. Dr. Jon Schmidt, Director of Professional Services at Trans Ova Genetics, offers a few tips for breeders that can help them build a more successful ET program. Adequate cow care and nutrition are the foundation. Cows with a body condition score of 4-6 on a level or slightly increasing plane of nutrition will provide the best results. Make sure rations are balanced for all major nutrients, and are without vitamin or mineral deficiencies. Beware, however, of rations too high in protein, as that may have negative implications on flush results. Cattle in comfortable, low stress environments tend to achieve optimal results. Healthy cattle are a must. Ensure that all cows are up to date on vaccinations before being used as a donor or recipient. Your local veterinarian would be the best person to consult with on what vaccinations are most pertinent to your geography. Nonetheless, either vaccination with a modified live virus within thirty days of a flushing protocol or an antibiotic treatment during the setup shot schedule could inhibit flushing performance. Plan ahead. Successful ET programs do not just happen, they are planned. Consult with your ET practitioner months before the actual flush or transfer day to secure a date on their calendar and to get a detailed schedule with cow preparation instructions. Getting a reference heat on donor cows before they start their set-up schedule is ideal,
and will require a few extra weeks of planning. The recipients in your herd will require extra attention and care should be taken to ensure that they are at least 60 days post calving before they have an embryo transferred into them. Following the rules will pay dividends. Your ET practitioner will provide you with a detailed schedule personalized for each individual donor being set up. To be most effective, hormones must be injected intramuscularly (unless otherwise noted), and while it may be tempting to adjust the hormone dosages or times for injections, following the schedule as close as possible may make a noticeable difference in the outcome of the flush. Practitioners take factors into consideration such as breed, age, weight, body condition, and previous flush history when devising these individualized protocols. Timing is everything. Proper heat detection will provide you with valuable information on when to inseminate donors or transfer embryos into recipients. This information will be very important to your ET practitioner. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t underestimate the importance of semen. Semen is a crucial part of a successful flushing program. Four units of excellent quality semen should be used for inseminating donors at a staggered interval. Donors are bred a minimum of two different times-usually at 12 and 24 hours after the first observed heat- and a third breeding might be preformed earlier or later depending on the circumstances. After the last breeding, keep donors comfortable, especially avoiding heat stress, until your practitioner is able to perform the flushes. Embryo Transfer results can be highly variable- and for many different reasons. Regardless, consistency and discipline within an ET program will prove to be beneficial over the long run.
