d e k r a m X e r u Another advent on my bucket list By: Vicky Ras I have always been obsessed with the great outdoors. I embrace outdoor adventures with the excitement of a child on Christmas Eve, including all the injuries and scars I have sustained over the years: from crashing hard and being hospitalized after a mountain trail biking accident to being sidelined for months due to shin splints and stress fracture from running ultra marathons, both on the road and on mountain trails as well. Although for a while, I harbored the deepest fear of any activity that involves the open water – all because I couldn’t swim, not even float – and had to forego sea adventures. Until I was invited to do intro to scuba diving sometime in May this year and discovered much to my delight that it’s not so terrifying out (or 25ft below) there, after all. And just when I thought I simply lucked out on scuba diving and my fear of the ocean has not completely dissipated, I found myself saying yes to yet another adventure – surfing. This water sport adventure was not part of the agenda when my runner friends and I hied-off to Iba, Zambales in the western shores of Luzon island last June. We were there to participate in the fun run organized by the local government in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the municipality. To the unfamiliar, Zambales, which is approximately a 3 to 4-hour drive from Manila, hosts 173 kilometers of beaches, with coral reefs, dive spots, and surfing areas. The peak of Mount Pinatubo lies on the intersection of the boundaries between Zambales, Pampanga, and Tarlac and on that day in 1991, when this once-dormant volcano violently erupted, a vast portion of Zambales has acquired “desert
like” features after being buried by more than 20 feet (6.1 m) of lahar. Today, however, Zambales is gaining popularity among divers, surfers and weekend beachcombers. Weather forecast mentioned no big waves in Zambales but the sea painted an entirely different picture when we arrived. The waves were surfable! Not one to waste time, we immediately asked the locals where we can rent boards and if there’s someone who can give a non-swimmer like me a crash course on surfing. Within minutes after checking in to our room, my friend and I changed into our swimsuits, and I was getting very rough tips on how to mount the board, pop, and stay vertical. I found it rather difficult at first to pop, coming from a horizontal position, on the surfboard. My mind kept telling me I would fall within seconds and true enough, I did – countless times! Proving once again the extent of our mind’s power: I think, therefore I am. In my case, I thought I would not be able to stand up and float away and I did fail in my first few attempts. But I got tired of landing on the right side of my glutes (which at that time was already starting to feel tender and painful) and decided that I am going to stay atop the board no matter what – and I did! My arms and abs felt raw the morning after, it was painful for me to even laugh or sneeze. I chipped a toe nail and my nail polish got ruined, too, but these things all seem inconsequential (I mean they really are, anyway) when pitted against the mad high I got out of actually being able to stay vertical for a few seconds on top of a moving surf board. Never mind that the waves were not as gloriously high as the 8-foot wall, for example, that experienced surfers prefer, or that my popping did not look anywhere near as graceful and natural. Never mind all that, because on that day in Iba, Zambales, I became little brown surfer girl.

When Mariama Krishnan joined the QI family in 2007, little did she know that it would change her life and better yet, the life of others. What inspired her was the corporate heartbeat, RYT HM (Raise Yourself To Help Mankind), which encourages kindness, understanding and care for the less fortunate, especially children. The turning point came when she attended the Footprints Testimonial Night in 2010. In our recent interview with Mariama, she revealed that she “felt compelled to learn more about the children participating in the programme.” Driven by a passion to help, Mariama visited the kids at several homes to observe them.
Because of this interest I started playing ball in school. I even became Captain Ball of my class back in seventh grade. But I wasn’t the best player. In fact I have missed plenty, if not all my shots, lost my grip on the ball too often, and stumbled way too many times. But as all players would love to say, I really love the game.
Until adolescence came and stole this passion away. I grew interested in a lot of things growing up. Not that I wasn’t interested in basketball anymore, but I had pushed it aside to give way for more important things- teenage stuff. I have outgrown my love (and my alertness) to play ball, but I will absolutely enjoy watching it forever. Enjoying the sport is a default most Filipinos. And despite the lack in height, countless Filipinos have excelled in this amazing sport. Millions enjoy watching it too! Just ask any stadium and coliseum in the Philippines for a list of its biggest attendees, and a basketball game would most definitely top the list. I was blessed to have watched the most unforgettable game to date. My nephew, a high school junior at one of the biggest universities in the Philippines, played for the junior league championships.
The experience opened her eyes, as well as her mind to ideas on how she could make a difference. Before joining QI, Mariama had taught tae kwon do on a part-time basis. After her visits, she seized the opportunity to combine her love for the sport with her desire to contribute. “Once I understood their plight, I volunteered to be a tae kwon do instructor at the Agathians Shelter,” she said enthusiastically. Her love affair with tae kwon do began at age 17, when an incident at school encouraged her to take up the sport. With the full support of her family, she quickly moved up the ranks and earned a third-degree black belt under the careful tutelage of her masters. The fighter in Mariama led her to participate in several championships, representing her school and even her home state of Perak. Working with the children has helped Mariama to raise herself, both as a tae kwon do instructor and as a person. Teaching 32 different personalities was not an easy task. Nevertheless she soldiered on, conducting classes faithfully every Saturday morning and even on public holidays. Backing her at every step is Vijayaratnam Foundation
Unfortunately, their team lost. Seeing the players, including my neph ew, give it their best was just remarkable. But seein g them defeated broke our hearts. As their oppo nent cheered and held the championship cup, my nephew and his team were all in tears . At that moment, I remembered what bask etball meant to me and to millions of Filip inos. It’s really not about the skills, the points, and the championships won, it’s about the heart. Their compelling drive to win gives people the inspiration to keep on going even durin g the most impossible situations. For ever y loss comes hope. For every win comes persever ance.
Walking toward my nephew, I just felt the urge to comfort him. But when I held his hand , he held his silver medal close, thanked us and gave us the biggest and warmest smile and said, “We’ll win it next year.” I smiled and felt a certain warmth inside me. I was proud that he had played so well.
My nephew (far left) with his team during the awardin g ceremonies. They placed 2nd.
(VF), which provides funding for the children’s classes, uniforms and exam fees. It seems that all the hard work is paying off. A few of her students have represented the state of Selangor in competitions, whilst 22 have completed their first graded exam. “It makes me really happy to be able to help the children,” beamed Mariama. “I’m incredibly thankful to God for giving me the strength to make a difference to their lives. Now I don’t just have 32 students – I have 32 brothers.” Just how long does she plan to keep running her little dojang (Korean for training school)? “For as long as I’m needed,” replied Mariama with a smile. “Hopefully the classes will guide the children to be better people.” Seeing this devoted teacher put in the time and effort to help others, makes us proud to call her our colleague. Have you got a similar story? Why not share it with the VF team? We are always on the look-out for a great cause to support. Just contact [name] at [details] and we will get in touch with you.

By: Gil Cadiz We crossed the border to get to Salzburg, Austria and I couldn’t believe that I was in the very setting of ‘The Sound of Music’. I totally geeked out when we walke d by the fountain where Maria and the Vontrapp kids danced aro und while singing ‘Doe, A Deer’. Salzburg is a small and charming city filled with elegant bar oque halls, churches and houses. As we didn’t have enough time, we didn’t see the big cities of Switzerland like Geneva, Zurich and Basel; however, we did go to Appenzell (known for the world-famous Appen zeller Cheese; of course, we went to the cheese fac tory and hoarded tons of cheeses) and this was the place where I had to nudge and pinch myself to come to terms with the fact that the place was ind eed… real. My mind jus t couldn’t handle the rustic beauty and perfection that my eyes were seeing . The winding roads were smooth and pretty. The gra sses on the rolling hills were perfectly manicure d. A patch of land had a different tinge of green fro m that of the one beside it. The cows were all rob ust, healthy and happy. Quaint houses of quiet and laidback dwellers were well-dispersed aroun d the hills. I said to myself this must be what a fairyland looked like or I might be in one alre ady! Appenzell was incredibly idyllic that we thought we were duped into thinking it’s a real pla ce but it’s actually just a hum theme park that shuts dow ongous n as soon as the last of the tourists leaves!... Until now, I som etimes still think Appenzell was just a mirag e. Or, Switzerland might not even be real, afte r all… I’ve got to save and go back to che ck!

Ramadhan in theHoly Land By Devi Roswati Sjahril
Ramadhan is a special month, a holy one for Muslims. Every year, Muslims all over the world celebrate Ramadhan by fasting for a whole month. During this holy time, we try to get closer to God by obtaining pahala (good credit), which can be done through good deeds, prayers, helping others, reciting the Qur’an, etc. Alhamdulillah (praise to God) my recent Ramadhan was very special – I completed an Umrah journey to Mecca. Umrah is a mini Hajj that can be performed at any time of the year. Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. said, “To perform Umrah in Ramadhan is like performing Hajj in my company.”

To reach the holy land, I had to take a 9-hour non-stop flight from Jakarta to Jeddah. In Indonesia, we normally fast from dawn till sunset, which is about 14 hours. As Saudi Arabia is 4 hours behind Indonesian time, my first challenge was fasting for 18 hours on my first day! Another challenge was the extreme difference in climate – I had to bear the 50-degree Celsius heat of the afternoon sun! It was the hottest temperature I had ever experienced, but because of niat (strong will), Alhamdulillah I managed to adjust to the difference. The first city I visited was Madinah, a 6-hour drive from Jeddah. Most of my time was spent in a very beautiful and magnificent mosque, Al-Masjid al-Nabawi, which was built by our Prophet Mohammad S.A.W. Every Muslim who goes there wants to visit the Prophet’s grave to pray and pay their respects. Every day I slept for only 2 to 3 hours, but I enjoyed my time very much. The night-life was good: after each night’s Tarawih prayer, we explored the surrounding shops. Most of them were open till dawn because during the day, people prefer staying indoors to avoid the extreme heat. After sahur (breakfast) at dawn, we began our fasting for the day. Next, I went to Mecca for Umrah. Performing Umrah was a great experience for me, especially while fasting. There were so many people there, almost as many during the Hajj! It was very challenging doing the Tawaf (circling the Ka’bah seven times) and Sa’i (walking between the hills of Safa and Marawh seven times; these are the hills situated to the south and north of the Ka’bah respectively) in the scorching mid-day heat. Another memorable moment occurred when I went to one of the deserts to buy fresh camel milk. Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. is known to have prescribed camel milk and urine for good health, so the benefits have been known by Arab Muslims for centuries. In fact, it is clinically proven that camel’s milk is better than cow’s milk – it contains less fat, cholesterol and lactose; plus, it has more vitamin C, potassium and iron! There in Mecca, a 300ml bottle costs only 5 riyal, so I was excited to give it a try. I’m glad to report that it tastes good! All in all, performing Umrah during Ramadhan was the most incredible experience I have ever had.
A tribute t
There’s a saying “Live each day as if it’s your last and overall just do it”. It is about how much we have impacted the lives of others, such that we are still greatly missed even after we are no longer here. My late friend and colleague, Wyzchugyn, was such a person, and this is why I have undertaken this page to remember him and share my memories with you.
I met Wyzchugyn or better known as Archan, (which means teacher) five (5) years ago in QI Services Thailand, Bangkok. During that time, his Department Head had appointed him to work with me on various creative projects. Looking at his nerd outlook, I barely thought he would be a guy with an imaginative or exciting ideas - but Archan certainly proved me wrong. In fact, he presented many creat researches and art theories that caught me by surprise.
In Bangkok, we’ve always teased and irritated Arch for turning meetings into an Art Theory class and making things far more complex than anyone could imagine. Yet, he always shrugs it off with a great sm on his face and continues to “teach” - now that’s what I call the spirit of teaching. Not everyone can master the art of teaching, as it comes with great passion and patience.

Archan also gained popularity as ‘Robin Hood’ after the role he portrayed in a humorous skit in the awardwinning entry for QI’s Got Talent in 2009.

Archan was also very dedicated to his work. He stayed back and worked late whenever it was necessary, and dealt with the challenges of his job without any fuss. The only time I’d remember Archan being highly stressed was during the last VCon, where he had to work with me and Puddhi scheduling instantaneous changes on all booths. Whenever under stress, he would take to heavy smoking. Only last year did we come to know that Archan had been diagnosed with cancer. The doctors confirmed that the virus had spread to his lymphatic glands and he was advised to undergo chemotherapy. He became progressively weaker after each session. As some of us have learned, death is inevitable for most cancer patients. However, Archan fought this disease with courage. What impressed us most was his positive mind and attitude. He continued to come to work regularly and even began working on some of his pending projects.
by Jesada Siraprapawan
Archan always hid his sorrows, and veiled his suffering with a smile. If we had not enquired about his condition, he would never ever have uttered a word about his pain. As the days went by, Archan lost more of his strength and even his voice became weaker. He began to spend more time in the hospital. Most of his team mates visited him in his last days. I still recollect the last text message I received from Archan which said, “I’m happy working with the group and I look forward to be back at my desk soon, Job”. After that message I assumed that Archan would make a comeback. I also made time to visit him despite being busy with major projects. Little did I know that he did not have much time. Archan passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 28, 2011. Although it’s been three months since his departure, we still feel his presence around us. He has left us all with his wisdom and appreciation for good humor. As long as we have those memories of him, he will always be with us in spirit. We miss you, Archan.
Rest In Peace.
A tribute to Archan “Achar n’s Humility made him a lead er in his own right – an example to all of us and a man whom we will miss dearly in our family. Ma y his soul rest peacefully from here on...”
