The Zahal Resort and Spa is a direct response to the Islamic culture in Doha. The proposal aims to both create a place intricately linked to its specific setting, while at the same time alluding to, drawing inspiration from, and re-envisioning an architecture suited not only to the local Qatari culture but the larger Islamic culture from which it will be deriving its programs, staff, and character development. Layered on top of this deep abstraction of place, climate and culture is also an attempt to make connections to a more universal audience and to that, which connects us all as human beings to our planet and the places we inhabit and encounter. This experience is one of both deep personal reflection and renewal, as well as one of promoting exchange and connection.
Occupying a dramatic landscape of eroded limestone rock formations at the northwestern end of the Qatari Peninsula, the site posed many challenges. Clearly for a resort development, the most salient and tangible features of the site are the turquoise green waters of the Arabian Gulf and the chalky white sculptural limestone formations, known as brooqs. Our design proposal is a direct and bold response to these two site conditions. Our buildings are conceived as large, monolithic masses carved and eroded by program, light and the movement of bodies.

ARTRON is a leading printing company in China that reproduces and archives the work of artists both classical and contemporary. Designed to be a landmark for the area, the building integrates with teh large-scale infrastructure surrounding to form a dialogue between the two. After the Core & Shell were complete, we were tasked to provide a full interiors package for this massive headquarters. The programs include the following: a factory printing plant, a high-end bookstore, a cafe, art galleries, office spaces, executive offices, and a four-story archive book wall located in the atrium of the building. The package was produced by a staff of three people. Due to the extensiveness of the design submittal, for the purposes of this portfolio, the focus will be placed on the most public spaces in the building.

The archive wall dwarfs the four stories of the atrium, creating a truly interactive piece of architecture. A uniform material of “obsidian” mill finish steel flows throughout the space to form the bookshelves, walls, bookstands, guardrails, and ceilings. The finish allows the space to reflect on the ceiling of the 4th level, doubling the space above. Art and special edition books are placed in display cases embedded in the modular system. A glass walkway connects the 2nd and 3rd levels at the north end of the atrium. Employees can access books in the archive through a system of catwalks and rolling ladders across the span of the system.

luxury bookstore

The specialty luxury bookstore sells the premiere publications that Artron produces for companies that hope to preserve their own histories, among which are Ferrari, Manchester United, the performer and icon Prince, and the American Major League Baseball establishment.
The ceiling design of the luxury bookstore consists of recycled make-ready’s (a test print run through the factory machines before officially running print), and recycled printing plates, the material with which printing companies use to apply ink.

The conference and client consultation rooms are located in the office level of the building, and are specially designed with a contemporary Chinese culture in mind. Materials include bamboo ceiling tiles, mill-finish steel, and a gold-leaf laid carve-out in the ceiling of the main conference room.

Ethical Spectacle serves as the antithesis to the constructed external reality of the outdoor retail complex, Tempe Marketplace. Over the course of a semester, the project posed several questions on the notion of public vs. private and their relationship to the everyday consumer. While conclusions were made about communication and social interaction, the process tended toward a general philosophy of “what if...?� with potential transitions against the inadvertent divisions existing in the built retail environment.

Similar to techniques used in Vegas, lifestyle centers use a specific constructed reality to absorb consumers. With ceaseless advertising, controlled circulation, background “muzak�, and generated compilations of non-native vegetation and water features as oasis-like relief from the desert climate, the Marketplace is able to provide spectacular comfort to ultimately maximize consumption with profits as a primary endgame. The growth of lifestyle centers happens concurrently with an acceleration of the closing of traditional shopping malls, which typically require large sites over 70 acres at a time when land prices are escalating. This large scale development, built in a sea of parking, creates natural social and communicative barriers due to vehicular reliance.

A “Hole in Space”, an audiovisual art installation done by artists in the 1980’s that connected New York City to Los Angeles. With the current technologies we possess of transmitting this kind of information, our digital culture could easily demonstrate this in a public setting.

The infrastructural cores are the first means to restore connectivity to a population of people distracted by spectacle and promotes social interaction by projected screens on their unused structural edges. Physically, it serves as the connecting blocks between phased implementations of program, and also are lifted to avoid the vast expanse of empty asphalt.

METRO MILKMAN “hot future� An interdisciplinary design competition that gathered groups of students from architecture, industrial, interior and graphic design to postulate on the implications of a warming climate. Using the nascent light rail system that opened in late 2008 and its planned stages of expansion, our proposal theorized that a food source in conjunction with public transport would densify the sprawl, thusly eliminating the need for fossil fuels to transport products to isolated exurban locations, and encouraging the use of a public system in a city where the vehicle culture is currently omnipresent. academic | sp2010 | asu

The Valley Metro Light Rail is an up-and-coming method for Phoenix to step away from our car culture. In the first few weeks up and running, the sheer number of users had already far surpassed the city’s expectations. FLUX is a multi-faceted system of moveable and adaptable equilateral triangles, hinged on opposing sides. With a series of columns to which these foam panels can connect, children can form inhabitable spaces, slides, tables or seating that conform to the needs and wishes of their age. Through this non-conventional system, children are actively encouraged to be mobile and inventive, understand connectivity, while engaging the artifact to adapt to their own specific needs.

axcess house serves as the transitional element between urban industry and forgotten residential of the urban fabric in the Grant Park sector of Phoenix. Through its versatile axis between open living space and utility modules, the design creates an adaptibility for any given inhabitant, an immediate accessibility to the street and nearby park, and an urgency to restore a connection between the inner suburb to the nearby downtown. Ultimately, implementing this design in the vacant infill lots would propel revitalization for the neighborhood, allowing it to be uninterrupted by the existing culturally blank area of mass industry.

A lifted megastructure spans the length of an antiquated retail mall in the inner-ring suburb of Phoenix, touching down at three points: the light rail station, the loading dock of the mall, and the interior mall corridor to create a neutral grounds between two areas of high-traffic suburbanism. A significant piece of the megastructure, the exposed existing loading dock provides many functional resources and gives occupants a sense of the origin of their consumer goods. As the element of escapism comes to light (one being the physical escape of travel, the other the fantastical escape of consumer culture) within the rapidly degrading city ring, it becomes clear that it is only with this large scale implementation that a real sense of community can occur.

The structural skin shell allows for constant modification and flexibility of the spaces within. With the current state of economic crisis, the Christown area has recently seen a rapid deterioration in the urban infrastructure. Programmatic decisions are based on a 10-15 year projection of the immediate community’s needs standing first as a training grounds for recovery.

The implementation would allow the community to take and densify the public airspace above the private retail and its surrounding 50 acres of parking, and serve as a public beacon for economic survival without interrupting the existing functions of the mall.
