MASS TIMBER MUSEUM FOR THE LA INSTITUTE OF FILM ARTS

SPATIAL CONTINUUM

The LA Institute of Film Arts & Underground Museum Annex merges independent cinema, contemporary art, and public engagement, seamlessly extending the urban realm through a double-height sloped plaza and interconnected pathways. Housing galleries, screening rooms, and an analog film archive, it serves as a landmark for artistic expression and cultural dialogue in Downtown Los Angeles.

Fall 2024

The museum is an extension of the public domain and sidewalk, creating a seamless ground plane connection between the urban realm and spaces

A double-height sloped plaza serves as a welcoming entry, inviting the public into a dynamic environment

Circulation through ramps and stairs weaves throughout the museum, guiding visitors on an accessible journey that dissolves boundaries between public and private realms, fostering exploration and discovery

RECLAIMING UNDERUTILIZED SPACES IN THE HEART OF SILICON BEACH

V ENICE TECH HUB

Located at the convergence of Washington Way and Abbot Kinney Blvd, this Venice Tech Hub reclaims underutilized space in the heart of Silicon Beach, creating a community-driven innovation hub that bridges technology and art. The studio also looked at AI image generators and creating fabrication methods through Grasshopper scripting. By cultivating collaboration, learning, and accessibility, the design reflects Venice’s unique materiality while providing a visible, inclusive space for both the tech industry and local creatives to connect and thrive.

A COOPERATIVE HOUSING PROJECT

METAMORPHIC METROFOYER

Reimagining cooperative housing in Los Angeles, this intergenerational community fosters mutual care, autonomy, and cross-generational relationships by bringing together youth in transition, elderly individuals, and caretakers in a heterogeneous living model. Inspired by desert dunes, its striated massing and fluid topography shape nine distinct housing pods, seamlessly integrating shared kitchens, study areas, and recreation spaces, while the dynamic ground floor—housing retail, groceries, cafes, and communal programs—creates a resilient urban oasis that bridges social support with architectural innovation.

The Oasis Housing Cooperative aims to empower and support marginalized groups often overlooked in capitalist cities like Los Angeles, providing a sustainable, intergenerational living environment. Designed as a metaphorical oasis, it offers a rich network of resources and support to residents facing systemic barriers. Youth receive basic necessities and career guidance for a confident transition to adulthood, while elderly individuals without familial or financial support live alongside caretakers and mentors, fostering mutual care and autonomy. Inspired by the metrofoyer concept, the ground floor integrates retail, groceries, cafes, and communal spaces for financial literacy workshops and counseling, while upper floors create diverse, interconnected living spaces. Rejecting segregated housing models, Oasis encourages cross-generational relationships and meaningful social interaction, bridging community, support, and sustainable urban living.

RESTORATION & RENEWAL OF TRADITIONAL DWELLINGS

REIMAGINED REVITALIZATION

Through USC Architecture’s study abroad program in Asia, I explored urban revitalization in Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City, merging heritage preservation with modern living. In Hong Kong we reimagined a traditional shophouse, balancing adaptive reuse and community engagement. In Ho Chi Minh City, we focused on KTT social housing, where we introduced staggered micro-dwellings to enhance ventilation, accessibility, and community life. These projects bridge tradition and innovation, fostering sustainable urban renewal.

REIMAGINED REVITALIZATION

RESTORATION & RENEWAL OF TRADITIONAL DWELLINGS

Hong Kong Tong Lau Historical Shophouses

At the University of Hong Kong, Mariya Idris and I collaborated on revitalizing traditional “tong lau” shophouses, focusing on the property at 207 Des Voeux Road W in Sai Ying Pun, now designated as a Grade II Historical Building. Through documentation, modeling, drawing, and adaptive reuse strategies,

we achieved a balance between modern functionality and historical preservation. By engaging with local communities, we explored innovative approaches to cultural preservation and urban heritage, seamlessly bridging tradition and modernity for sustainable urban living.

& RENEWAL OF TRADITIONAL

Vietnamese KTT Social Housing

Our collaboration with the University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City (UAH) focused on the renewal of social housing projects, known as “KTTs.” Our USC team (Mariya Idris and Allison Yen) worked with Lam, Mẫn, Thai, Đông Huyền (UAH). Our KTT was located at Chung cư 42 Tôn Thất Thiệp in District 1. By engaging with the dynamic and evolving urban landscape of Ho Chi Minh City and engaging with Vietnamese locals, we worked towards implementing staggered micro-dwelling units, contributing to the enhancement of living conditions such as increased cross ventilation, better accessibility, and fostering a sense of community.

ADAPTIVE REUSE: THE REGROWN ROOFTOP

FROM GARDEN TO PLATE

Located at 801 S Broadway, this adaptive reuse project is a rooftop urban farm that features an organic, feathery form that is both striking and functional. The structure is designed with glulam and steel frame with custom curved double glazing systems. The project brings an urban agriculture space in the heart of downtown LA’s Historic Core.
