PUBLIC & TRANSPORT-ORIENTED WOODWARD Design Type: Residential Design Project Theme: Urban Fabric Project Location: Detroit, USA Time: 2013, Graduate Instructor: Nahyun Hwang, Joel Schmidt Partners: Xin Miao Yong, Manuel Martinez
This project is located on the Woodward Avenue which is the most important road in Detroit. The design is based on the proposal of light rail along the woodward. A new urban fabric is added in each site which is going to have a light rail station. Our proposal is to change the existing condition of woodward corridor which the edge of the wall defines a strong seperation of pavement and buildings. In our design, considering the potential properties this site could have in the future, the ground floor is open for the public to allow various of activities to happen in the site, while the residential building is lifted up to keep its privacy.

02 CHICAGO RIVER WALK
CHICAGO RIVERWALK Design Type: Concept Design Project Theme: Public TRANSITions Project Location: Chicago, USA Time: 2012, Graduate Instructor: Claudia Wigger Partners: Lyla Feinsod, Annie-Locke Scherer
Throughout its history, the Chicago River has been used for industrial and manufacturing purposes, which led to extreme pollution. This infrastructural intervention explores the current disconnect between the Chicago River, the city, and its inhabitants. It investigates new methods of interaction with the water and redefines the river’s relationship to pedestrian, car, and building. The proposed design begins at Union Station, progresses beneath the highway, and culminates at a currently abandoned brownfield, providing river access to travelers and citizens. There are many paths to enter and exit the intervention, allowing participants to create their own destinations. The intervention extends 0.7 miles, expanding the pedestrian city four blocks south, thus progressing Chicago in a new, previously unexplored way.

03 THE AGING HOUSE
THE AGING HOUSE Design Type: Housing Project Location: Metropolitan Time: 2013, Graduate Instructor: Keith Mitnick
This project is a house of abstraction, which represents three different stages of a person’s life. Inspired by the idea of how small could suggests big, I want to design a house that focus not simply on the functionality but also layers of meanings one could introduced in a design of a single house. Three stages of a person are chose, peewee, adult and senior. By using their specific cognitions and characteristics when portraying the same house, three different results are created. The final design is one complete house having these three houses immersed into one. Techniques including view-controlling, images, materials and scale-shifting are used to illustrate ideas of abstraction.

04 VILLAGE MEMORY
VILLAGE MEMORY Design Type: Library, Musuem, and Media Center Complex Project Location: Mengcheng, China Time: 2012, Undergraduate Final Project Instructor: Li Zao Site Area: 29671 sqm Construction Area: 28726 sqm FAR: 0.7 Vehicle Parking: 222 Bicycle Parking: 360
This project is located in Mengcheng, a town in the northwest of Anhui, China. In order to maintain the self-identity of the town within the flow of urbanization in China, the design absorbs the space characteristics of a traditional village in Anhui, inherits the texture of the villages surrounding the site. The site is designed as a landscape which welcomes not only the building users who will stay in the site but also pedestrians to walk around and pass through. By dispersing the building volumes in the site, the design offers visitors more opportunities to interact with landscape and evokes people’s memories of traditional Chinese living style.

“Disaster-prevention System and Life Ark” Under normal circumstances, this new CBD could be a place where commercial activities function well and the spiritual desire of people is properly satisfied. When disaster unfortunately arrives, it could become a “new” CBD capable of shifting its function to a disaster-prevention system and fighting against disaster level by level. That is to say that the new CBD center can quickly shift into a life ark protecting people’s lives and resisting the impact of terrible disaster.

06 WETLAND MESUEM DESIGN
This site is located in Xixi wetland, Hangzhou. As a special eco-system, this wetland is carefully protected in the design. The design is to accomodate the new building to the original buildings around it, so as to reduce the impact of the new building to its surroundings. The main concept is integration, which means designing the environment, buildings and possibilities of activities that will happen in this site. The corridor circle is the basic link of each space, visitors will experience both outdoor and indoor space.
