ABOUT — HELLO, my name is Qianyu, also known as QY. This is a compilation of the works that I have done thoughout a period of 4 weeks, for the module, Expressive Illustration. — In this space, I will showcase my works and my thoughts. — One thing that I aim to achieve is to engage the viewers with my works. I think the best thing about being an illustrator is the ability to engage and stir up the interest of the viewers. Apart from that, paying attention to the daily experiences and happenings in life is important. Because these experiences and happenings can inspire me and lead me to creating another illustration. — Ultimately, I hope that when people look at my illustrations, they will feel curious and want to know more about it. As a illustrator, I feel that I should be curious about the world, life and my surroundings. Curiosity will lead to great things. In my opinion, by staying curious, we will be more open to changes and challenges, such as learning a new skill or doing something we have never done before. —

finishing The character on the opposite page is called the Thug Trucker. A manly thug that goes around proclaiming his love for New York City. I have fallen in love with the 8 characters that I created during this short period of time.

These series of sketches were done for onomatopoiea. We went through a round of crit and got requested to touch up and introduce new ideas and sketches. Even though it was not a smooth sailling process, we still managed to cope with it.

This illustration is one of my favourite. I love the negative space and the style of the finishing. Looking at it, I have mixed feelings. Sometimes, I feel calm and at ease. Other times, I feel alone and cold. I would say this is the power of illustration. Using a single image to convey a message. Illustration is engaging and it tugs the emotions of the viewers when done correctly.

metaphor sketches
This section of sketches were done on metaphors. We were given a short period of time to complete the sketches before we moved on to our final finishings. The process was challenging. But I definitely learned alot during this 4 weeks. I did a few finishings, however a couple of them didn't look right and thus they were rejected by my lecturer.

finishing The illustration on the opposite page is titled Just Married. The idea behind is to show how couples are tied to each other after marriage, each losing part of their freedom. — I hope that my works will make the audience feel like they can relate to it. The things and experiences that I have went through over the past years are now part of me and this experiences made me who I am. I try to relate my past experiences into my work, so that in such a way, I am adding my personality to every art piece and project that I dedicate myself to. — As a budding illustrator, satisfaction to me is when I feel a sense of achievement when the outcome of my work is better than what I expected. The feeling of completing my work also leaves me satisfied, because I know that I have put in a huge amount of effort and when it’s done, I feel accomplished. Satisfaction is also about being proud of my work.
