INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE
The site previously held a glass works in the 1940s. The landscape design takes design cues from glass and the fractured radial pattern from shattered glass. This radial form follows the curve of the waterway and orientates the landscape south towards Bow Back River. The glass shards define the forms within the landscape.

The design approach aims to create a permeable and accessible public realm which responds to the existing conditions and surrounding townscape and heritage. The built form of the development has been driven by the desire to create a public realm that not only responds to people’s needs, but is both integral to the spirit of Marshgates Industrial heritage, with reference to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the Canal Park.

SHENZHEN, GUANGDONG
SITE ANALYSIS
Meilin – Caidian Industrial Belt
Financial Expansion The site sits east of Futian’s CBD, west of Chegongmiao business zone, south of high class residential and north of the Shatou inner city village.
Futian Central Business District
Importantly Xiangmihu’s positioning between Central Futian’s Financial District and Chegongmiao business zone supports the site’s strategic role as a key regeneration site that can strengthen Shenzhen’s east to west financial expansion.
Huaqiang North Chegongmiao
Hong Kong - Shenzhen Innovation & Technology Park
Futian Port Shenzhen – Hong Kong New Corridor
Tanglang Mountain Park
Environmental Corridors
Bijia Mountain Park
Shenzhen has limited access to water resources, and its water supply system is under increasing pressure due to the city’s rapid growth. Main waterways around the site are polluted due to the wastewater discharges and stormwater runoff. This project has the potential to environmentally connect the Tanglang Mountains and Shenzhen Bay together through green and blue infrastructure. Allowing for an increase in water supply and ecological habitation positioning the project as a global leader in health, well being and urban resilience.
Futian River
Meilin Reservoir
Xinzhou River Fentang River
Xiangmi Lake Lotus Mountain Park
Central Park Childrens Park
Shenzhen Golf Course
Mangrove Nature Reserve
Regional Connectivity The site is constrained by a trunk road system featuring four east-west roads and three north-south roads, which have evolved out of necessity but provide connections to the wider city, whilst a network of fragmented secondary roads and bypasses provides scope for enhanced connectivity, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists traversing the area, and land use efficiency. The district currently benefits from 5 metro lines and 5 stations, which are reasonably integrated with the local bus network, and connects Xiangmihu to most of the key destinations around the city.

The contemporary history of Shenzhen is one of enormous change. Shenzhen today is quickly evolving from a quiet market town to one of China’s major global commercial centre. Xiangmihu is located within Shenzhen’s central government, Municipal Committee and business district of Shenzhen. The site is also naturally benefit from its superior environmental and transportation advantages. Xiangmihu Park City will be revealed as a memorable, experiential and connected network of environments that position Xiangmihu as a global leader in health, happiness and harmonious living.

In response to the ever-changing environments cities have to respond to, our team has developed an urban revitalisation approach that intrinsically integrates urban design and place making together. A key aim of this approach is in implementing flexible and changeable solutions to highly specific and constantly evolving places. Central to this commitment has been our team’s international research into understanding the vital aspects that combine to form a place. Through our extensive resource network, we have been able to discern these vital systems into a workable set of criteria that can be applied to any ‘place’. Referred to as the Place Vitality Criteria, these elements form a holistic set of systems. Each system inter-relates with the other, reinforcing the complex relationships that interplay in creating vital places. Importantly these systems respond to the needs a community and inform smart governance.

URBAN TYPOLOGIES
The urban structure has been broken down into a series of typologies that ensure a varied urban grain. Each is designed with a private courtyard and a strong urban edge to maximise street definition. Each Typology’s courtyard sits on a raised solid podium base for private use by tenants. These podiums allow for continued active frontage and narrower intimate and bustling city streets. Located on the podium are a myriad of perimeter block forms and towers, ensuring height and density variation while maintaining urban structure on the ground plain.

The mews is a deliberately narrow road, giving it a distinct identity in relation to the other streets. It is defined on each side by two storey courtyard houses which include single storey elements, ensuring that the mews receives good daylighting and open aspect despite its narrow width. There will be gates accessing the car port to each house and otherwise additional on-street parking will be in a chevron arrangement in groups, interspersed with trees. This arrangement acts as a chicane to reduce traffic speeds, The whole street width will be a shared surface.

GARDEN CITY SKYLINE FUTIAN, SHENZHEN, CHINA
GARDEN PLAN
This is the first international public flower show held by the Shenzhen Municipal Government. Our design team was commissioned to design two gardens, one of which was the “Skyline Garden”. It was a pre-formal flower show display, last for a month, and it plays significant role as advertising for the upcoming show before it officially launched to the public.
26
The site is located in central plaza of the Shenzhen Civic Center. The idea is to place a delicate and exotic small soft garden into the center of the city which dominated by hardscape. Lighting structures has also been designed and brings special effects in the nighttime. It also designed to coordinate with the city’s breathtaking light show on the background, and attract the public’s attention, eventually encourage them to participate in the official garden exhibition held in the Botanical Garden one month later.
The design concept is to arrange the main landmarks in the three districts of Shenzhen according to the geographical location. Plants are follow the overall ‘tempo’ , matches the height of the building shape, to creating the feeling of a flower city. The plant distribution rule is starting with relatively calm colors on the edge, then reaches the more vivid visual effect on the central island. At night, the garden will have a three-hour lighting display, lighting tubes which embedded in the steel pipe is a perfect way showing the shape of the skyline and light up the planting underneath. Worth mentioning that all materials on the site are recycled materials.

We took the butterfly as the main design concept, representing the image of a butterfly’s transformation. More than 50 species of plant were selected and most of them are easy to attract butterflies. Colored acrylic plates and nylon ropes has also been selected to create the symbolic figure of butterflies. All materials on the site are recyclable, to avoid any unnecessary burden for the environment. This design has won the gold prize at the boutique garden section.

The design concept consists of two preliminary design solutions. Mainly used acrylic sheets, nylon rope s and weathering steel plate to represents the butterfly idea. Visitors can see through all these structures, so there are barely any viewing blocking. We have selected red, purple, blue and yellow as the colors of acrylic plates and transparent illusion PVC which is matching with flower colors, it not just enhance the dynamics of the garden, and it will also cast a dazzling effect on the pavement under the illumination of the sun. The installations on site are cleverly arranged, very solid as a temporary garden exhibition, easy to assemble and disassemble, which also greatly reduces labor costs..
