hi, i am Qieer Wang. i originally come from Chengdu, and i moved to Baltimore in 2014 for graduate study at MICA. recently i am trying to explore ways to convey my idea with different formats. i like using materials like ink, brush, screenprinting, crayon, monoprint and also digital pen. i think the most important element in my works is emotion. Style doesn’t really matters as much as concept to me. My goal looks like and will always be depicting the emotional atmosphere.

Basically, I made six “ FACEs” based on six quotes about attitudes of living a life by using Renaissance painting to collage. For the products, I printed them out in two different formats––book and postcard. For the book especially, I cut their faces into 3 parts, so that people could make their own face by turning pages. Also, I made a very simple webpage to showcase this idea online.

To hear never-heard sounds, To see never-seen colors and shapes, To try to understand the imperceptible Power pervading the world; To fly and find pure ethereal substances That are not of matter But of that invisible soul pervading reality. To hear another soul and to whisper to another soul; To be a lantern in the darkness Or an umbrella in a stormy day; To feel much more than know. To be the eyes of an eagle, slope of a mountain; To be a wave understanding the influence of the moon; To be a tree and read the memory of the leaves; To be an insignificant pedestrian on the streets Of crazy cities watching, watching, and watching. To be a smile on the face of a woman And shine in her memory As a moment saved without planning. ― Dejan Stojanovic

For the very first project we were asked to generate new ideas based on our old works. Since I was always drawn into depicting energy and emotion in my old drawings, so this time I decided to explore energy within scenes of “ a moment before.
/// image harvest= new style+ old concept /// /// 26

I convey the idea through a totally different way compared as my old style. It was a very risky process for me, but daring taking risks sometimes means daring accepting failures.

This was a two-day workshop project.(really a sleep-nomore workshopXD! All processes were finished within 3 days!) Audio was by my friend Tun.Thanks a lot for his support from thousands miles away. For the concept, I got the inspiration from people’s relationship between each other in daily life, especially between family members. “We grow and live on the same branch, fight happens at any time, however, I will always forgive you no matter what.” And also, I want to remind people of that “Your Words can hurt people’s feeling easily. Although they will forgive you eventually, the injury would still there like a wrinkle on a piece of paper.” For the character design, I got inspiration from my old mono-print drawings from last semester. After redesigned it, I did collage with those three “plant people”. https://vimeo.com/122815361
I also did two more sections for depicting the characters’ emotion. For one, I made a small “Nails in Wood installation to express that the first guy was irritated by the other two. For another, I use mono print material and a roller to make rough and bold scratchy lines and shot them step by step.
/// stop motion= collage+ installation+ motion /// /// 42
I really enjoy this project itself and also the rush of time. I hope I can do more and do better stop-motion animation in the future.

In this workshop we have to find a topic to do 5 pieces to convey this idea through. I chose “Femininity” and focus on depicting a specific part– “ celebration of being a woman”.( This set was from one of my pattern workshop reaction series which was about femininity. The first four pieces are focus depicting “celebration of being a woman”. In the fifth piece, to be particularly, I want to convey a reality in Asian country recently, which is identification of the woman to her own. I use blue walls and water as a metaphor of isolation and self-doubt. Warm orange-red versus cool purple-pink represent the temperature of male and female. The woman stand on male’s shoulder is a metaphor of married woman in society. Male looks like they’re protecting woman and they think this relationship is perfect, however woman does not.They look imprisoned spoiled and empty. Woman stand on their own feet is a metaphor of single ladies.The look afraid and upset of being aware of themselves. This topic also help me rethink what exactly feminism is––it is a revolution in woman herself as a individual first, then as a group, and last make it natural in society.)

I cooperated with local primary school student to create two illustration pieces for their poems around March.2015. It was a very interesting but also challenging project to handle. I have to say both of my poems are all very deep and meaningful. However, it could somehow showing more personal interpretation based on my experience rather than satisfy all the audience. Therefore, some misunderstanding could easily happened.

This is an assignment from my digital illustration class, based on a short story from “ The Dictionary of Imaginary Places”–– Bear Island. The way I depicted this assignment has been influenced by the way I depict my poster assignment from the class, which was using simple shape and with flat color. And this imaginary assignment have a strong influence on my self-directed project later on.
The story–– BEAR ISLAND, situated off the coast of the United States, near the Island of Fortune, and subject to hurricanes and floods. As the name of the island makes clear, bears have become the dominant species. They walk erect, cultivate the land and gather the crops. Men, on the other hand, move on all fours, live wild in the forest and are the bears’ slaves or beasts of burden. /// imaginary illustration /// /// 58

/// 60
61 /// /// imaginary illustration /// I felt excited because of the unlimited imagination space we got from this world. So, my interpretation of the story was about a whimsical world of citizens who are all drawn into fashion and have a very severe obsession of hierarchy by category citizens by the levels of thier fashion value.
Outside of the fashion runway show, this is the landscape I imagined that human beings are the island itself.

For this project, I cooperated with a musician α·Pav. He provided me his new album named “ Pasion 3”, which contains 8 songs. I interperated the eight songs as a story about a journey. So I designed a story about a girl originally came from a geomatric world, which will shows in the inner book on the back as a poster. She found a canyon, after walking through it, she came to a totally different world––melting, soft world. Her journey was taken by different animals from page to page.

<first breath>
<First Breath> is animated for a song wirtten by a musician α·Pav, which was derived from the name of a star in the southern constellation Pavo. His music genre are basically Ambient and Electronic. His new album is named “ Pasion 3”, and the song I chose was called “ υ”, which is still a name of a star.
For the final video, welcome to have a look on my vimeo page– – vimeo.com/qieerwang.

My story was an imaginery scene inspired by the music. It is described the first breath of this world, and after the breath the face turning into a wild landscape with mountains, trees and rivers. I basically want to depict the moment of growing and the sense of eternal changing.
