Vineyard On The Platform

01

Adelaide CBD

Vineyard On The Platform project outlines a competitive Adelaide in regard to livability and sustainability, through the rejuvenation of Metro Edge. A railway cuts Adelaide urban core into half. The east side is Adelaide CBD with City Parks while the west side is City of West Terrace. Meanwhile, the urban core is not only divided into several parts visually, but also separated into two parts by the rail line. Therefore, owing to the inconvenient transport, City of West Terrace has missed many development opportunities.

03

n.t.s.

Trying to transfer the regional disadvantages to advantages is a main strategy to enhance strengths and reduce weaknesses. The design of Vineyard On The Platform is based on the high-speed rail development planning, which will be considered in the following years. Therefore, a new modern and environmental “underground” train station keeps the existing railway transportation functions. The water level of the West City Parks is 7.2m higher than the existing railway. The minimum altitude of high-speed rail passing way is 5m. Therefore, building a “bridge” on the top of the existing railway to link the City of West Terrace and the Adelaide CBD is feasible and efficient theoretically.

On the top of the Platform is an urban side vineyard. It connects City of West Terrace with the West City Park visually. Meanwhile, the cooperation of the vineyard and the City Parks aims to respond to the key challenge of climate change such as urban heat island effects. Vineyard particularly conforms to the Adelaide wine making culture and urban atmosphere. It is a kind of agricultural landscape and rural landscape, which expresses the theme of “Metro Edge Elimination” clearly and vividly. Because of this, there should be no boundaries between urban and rural areas, and there should be no boundaries of industry and agriculture.

SITE SURVEY

ISSUE

TRANSPORTATION:

Three rail lines are on the east side of the site. They are the negative points for this area. But on the other hand, they also create opportunities for City of West Terrace. The high-speed rail progarm between Melbourne and Adelaide will be built in the following years, which could improve vitality.

The roads are criss-crossing in the territory, exrending in all directions. However, from the site central to Adelaide CBD, it must go along the Sir Donald Bradman Dr at north or Anzac Hwy at south.

LAND USE:

To some extent, the metro edge is a big problem for development of City of West Terrace. It not only separates the site form Urban but also isolates City of West Terrace from development opportunities. The existing transport system provides a bond between city and site. However, this area still lacks interaction with Adelaide CBD. And it is so difficult for people to pass through the rail line and walk to there from the city. Meanwhile, due to the cut-off of the rail line, the site is hard to integrate into Adelaide city visually.

Train Station Urban Park The Old Industrial Area Residence Zone Adelaide CBD Design Area The rail way cuts off the site and Adelaide city. The influence of metro edge is still a huge issue for the footpath.

In the past, there is only one footpath from city to site south. And people need to spend much time to walk through the previous footpath. So driving is still the most important transportation for local residents. However, three new footpaths will go across the city west park and rail lines. It makes walking become a new and interesting transportation in this area. Among the three footpaths, red rubber covers one on the north, which is for the residents who like jogging in the morning.

Planting grape is a good job for homelessness. Meanwhile, the vineyard is also a good strategy to attract wineries to invest the advertisement.

PERSPECTIVE 3 Many apartments are being build near the site. Most of them focus on CBD white-collars and oversea students as their main customer groups because these people need to exercise and the free spinning space.

The bigger group, the bigger screen. The electricity power is generated by the spining machines which can support the LED screen to show the advertisement. The ad-rate could be a part of donation benefit for homelessness. The big LED screen also could be uesd in events.

Meanwhile, spinning provides the electricity for the LED screen, wchih could be used to show advertisements. Many companies would like to show their advertisement and invest this opportunity.

INTRODUCTION ST KILDA

Salisbury is located 25km north of Adelaise. It occupies an area of 161 square of Gulf St Vincent to the Para Escarpment and the foothills of the Mt Lofty Ranges. 32 suburbs are incorporated in Salisbury from Edingburgh in north to Walkey Heights in the south. And more than 134000 residents are living at Salisbury.

ADELAIDE

St kilda has rich tourism resources, such as St Kilda Adventure Playground, Mangrove Trail, Tarmway Museum.etc. The tourism is dispersive. And the operating frequency is underutilized.

Project 04/ 47

Mangrove Trail is a very famous tourism project, which provides a habitat for migratory bird. Coastal mangroves, shallow water seagrass and intertidal mudflats develop a native biological ecosystem.

St kilda is linked to A1 Highway with a 5km long main road. However, there is no indication sign nor landscape along the two sides of the road.

Large, constructed saltwater evaporation lagoons surround the only road into the suburb, being filled in spring and salt normally harvested in autumn and used by Penrice Soda Products. And it was used to produce soda ash.

Project 04/ 48

HISTORY

The 1949 photograph shows the mangroves growing in front of houses south of the hotel, and the deep, mangrove-lined creek where the boat channel is presently. The shallow boat channel came in to the hotel, and was used by limited draught boats at high tide. There were well- established seagrass beds just off-shore that came as close to the shore as the landward edge of the adjacent mangroves.

Some time in the late 1960’s things started to change rapidly. The landfill rubbish tip for the City of Salisbury was begun, and it was established on the mangroves adjacent to the southern creek. This was a common practice in the 1960’s, and many of the east coast mangrove forests have suffered a similar fate. Several northerly remnants of mangroves still remained on he northern edge of the landfill.

A shallow channel established itself north of the dumped spoil. It may have been kept open by water being pumped out of the landfill area, where a deep collection area existed just behind the seawall. By 1972 the Bolivar Wastewater Treatment Works had been operating for seven years, and this, combined with the dredging and landfilling activities, may explain the dieback of seagrass, compared to 1961, that is visible in the photograph.

A photograph taken only seven years later in 1979 shows how quickly the landfill progressed. An additional ‘cell’ had been added on the northern side of the landfill and now completely covered the mangrove forest, except of two small, isolated trees. The photograph from 1979 clearly shows plantings and other improvements taking place on the southern cells of the landfill. There appears to be no further pumping out occurring at the landfill, and the channel to the immediate north of the boat channel dredge spoil embankment has filled in. The shallow channel to the hotel has almost disappeared.

This shows the view in 1989. It is likely that the gas pipeline was installed by this time and the lumpy dredge spoil north of the boat channel would have been ‘rocked’ to prevent it slumping and to make a firm foundation for the pipeline. Of note in the 1989 photograph is the presence of sea cabbage (Ulva rigida) growing on the floor of the bay where seagrass previously occurred. All Ulva species are nitrogen scavengers and they can blanket a nutrient-rich area completely, in Spring time. Further off-shore the seagrass beds had deteriorated into separate little ‘islands’ with patches of bare sand between them.

The final photograph in the series shows the bay in 2000. What can also be seen in this last photograph is that the rapid retreat of the seagrasses is still continuing. One of the most recent areas of seagrass to die back was a patch just off the end of the playground (built on the old landfill). The rusty colour on the photograph marks the area that had recently died. Within a few years the area will simply look bare, as the rest of the bay does.
