1.0 Three Relationships Point/Line/Plane

.

Explore how the ideas & designs interact with the ground surface

Mass Explore the idea of underground spatiality.

Frame & Infill Explore the space above ground.

1.1 Point / Line / Plane Lines intersect to produce points Planes intersect to poduce lines

1.2

Mass

SOLID AND VOID: DARKNESS AND LIGHT: TOUCH AND SEE "When it comes to excavated ground, dreams have no limit" (Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space)

SHARON KELLY and ROBIN PRICE This picture is a complete mutation into an abstract mass with negative drawing of shapes. The initial rational mapping gives way to intuitive dynamics of expanding dark matter with light scoring pathways as its signature over it.

Charcoal drawing in class The contrast between rough straight lines and smoothing area creates a sense of falling.

Concept My design ia about to indicate routes by the change of light. The light sources are the wide opening at the end of the tunnel and the sky opening. From wide to narrow, the light to dark, an intense feeling is created while walking into it.

1.3 Frame & Infill Excavated cube

Frame can be simple, and when the frame is simple, the variation of infill is what makes it intersting.

Concept

The conceptual idea for my design is an simple framed cube infilled by secondary frames. In my design, the frame is simple which is just a cube frame. However, the infill is interesting which is made of small scaled frame.

2.0 Herring Island- A place for keeping secret something like a pavilion

2.1 Site Analysis: Herring Island

A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRET Herring island is a interesting place for enjoying nature which is surrounded steel and concrete. The vegetation and foliage on the island performs as screen that block out most of city views from within the island, which makes it a perfect place for keeping your secret away from city life.

The red area is the grassy picnic area, which is the only wide open flat area on the island. Free electric barbecues, picnic shelters and drinking water fountains have been installed.

Those orange lines are showing the main pathway around the island The old Scout hall on the north corner was renovated to form the Herring Island Gallery. It is open for the summer arts festival and available for functions and exhibitions.

3.0 Reflection

Throughout this semester, I learned a lot about how to express my design concept and develop the potential as far as I can. As a student study for architecture, I learned how to think and produce in an architectural way. When there is a case, we have to understand the function that is required, then make use of space to generate function. In addition, about this studio, it’s really helpful to have our own concepticle firstly. By having our concepticle first, we had our chance to get tutor’s help on developing ideas and that’s the most important thing to help us going deeper and deeper.
