BRAND HISTORY

We are an American children’s magazine. It began publication in June 1946, started by Garry Cleveland Myers and his wife Caroline Clark Myers in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. They both worked for another children’s magazine, Children’s Activities, for twelve years before leaving to start Highlights. Since its inception Highlights has carried the slogan “Fun with a Purpose”.

Highlights magazine reflected their philosophy that children become their “best selves” by using their creativity and imagination; developing their reading, thinking and reasoning skills; and learning to treat others with respect, kindness and sensitivity.

Highlights is geared mainly toward elementary school students; it contains stories and puzzles for children ages six to twelve years old. One aim of the magazine is to encourage kids to read and has something for preschoolers in every issue. Highlights’ illustrations feature people of all colors and its stories also cover diverse communities. Its February 2017 issue included a family with two dads, the first depiction of a same-sex relationship in the magazine’s 70-year history.

OUR NEW LOGO

Satisfy Curiosity, Find Interesting Things

Our new brand logo shows the meaning of Satisfy Curiosity, Find Interesting Things. Also, it nicely showcases the brand spirit of Highlights. Here, we use a geometric shape and the letter “H” to create a star, which means we are very happy to help every generation grow up. For the wordmark, we use a round San Serif to make the feeling professional and approachable

BLACK & WHITE LOGO

The color logo is always preferred, but there are times when we will need to use the black or reversed signature in one-color printing. On dark backgrounds, use reversed signature. When there is adequate contrast and light backgrounds, use black signature.

LOGO IN COLOR

The primary logo includes both the star, as well as the name Highlights, the logo can also be split up into different components for a more flexible application. At smaller sizes, the wordmark alone will fit the space best and be more readable. The star can be used on its own as a graphic element, or with the signature initials inside as a secondary logo. In all variations of the logo, it can be used with the appropriate colors, as a single color of any allowed color, or black and white.

LOGO SIZE CHART

See the chart for guidance on when to use each type of logo variation. If the application of the logo is small (under an inch), it should be used as a wordmark only. Under a half inch, the logo is too small to be seen and should not be included in any form at that size. For larger logos (over 2 inches) it can be used as either the full primary logo, or the symbol logo.

The brand Highlights’ current color is red. For this re-branding, we wanted to refresh that standard of brand color.
