About
We are social animals. We crave contact with others for support, well-being, and entertainment. But we do not just interact with other beings, we also interact with our environment, whether it is mother nature or man-made structures. In everyone’s daily life, we interact with interior spaces; we work; we live, but how many of these spaces are truly designed for the individual is live? That is the question as a designer I want to provide solution. With the principles of Social Design in mind, my goal is to be a designer who represents something.

Basis Violence, war, and persecution besides causing damage to the artificial and natural landscape, uproots livelihood. Further with climate disasters and poor governance, there has been a 200% increase in people seeking asylum. The refugee crisis is paramount. Camps are usually planned, built and designed for only a short time but fail to accommodate everyone. According to the UN, only 189,300 refugees of 65.6 million were resettled in 2016. Alongside this, the society has to habitat asylum seekers and deporters, which further crumbles down the system. People prefer to find refuge in a country where they can get better opportunities. But when institutions and countries start rejecting humanitarian efforts for self-preservation, it leads to increased burden and hostile conditions. Same is happening along the borders of the US and Mexico
8
Background A humanitarian crisis has taken place along the borders of US-Mexico. In May 2019, around 19,000 people were waiting in Mexico to seek asylum in the States. Many of them are living in detention centers, crowded shelters, and makeshift camps. From only men crossing over to the US for employment in 2000 to families seeking refuge in 2014 for a better livelihood, there has been a tectonic shift along the borders of US-Mexico. This led to American Immigration Crisis in 2014, following which the Trump government implemented a crackdown. With ‘Zero Tolerance Policy’ in 2018 and ‘Metering’ in 2019, the total border crossings have been constant, but the no. of people seeking asylum has increased. This has led to thousands of asylum seekers waiting for refugee status along the US-Mexico border. With the US administration seeking a “safe third country” to absorb asylum seekers, organizations in Mexico have struggled to keep up with the influx of migrants. Once a country of transit, Mexico is buckling under the demands of its new reality.

9
New Beginning
Issues New laws have effectively delayed the asylum process, with the backlog increasing by 10,000 cases in Mexico in one year. Over that, the inhumane living conditions in migrant camps have made people restless for a response from the Centre of Border and Protection (CBP). This has led to them occupying streets, spaces near border walkways, and bridges. Due to an increased number and changing society fabric, immigrants are seen as a burden on city tourism and the city’s safety. They are considered to be intruders and face racism, xenophobia, and discrimination on a daily basis. Immigrants are not safe themselves, often falling victim to the increased crime rate. With growing tensions between local communities in Mexico and a delayed immigration process in the USA, asylum seekers are slowly being rejected by both countries.
10
New Beginning
Brief As asylum seekers occupy border walkways and bridges, it’s function expands from a transit medium to space for rehabilitation. These bridges connect Mexico and the USA not only physically, but also culturally and emotionally. It’s a gateway for asylum seekers - for their dreams, freedom, and security. Border bridges essentially are shared spaces, belonging to no one country. With migrant facilities limiting total intake and asylum seekers refusing to leave bridges, the idea is to expand it to become a temporary habitat. Challenge is to design an immigrant respite center. It will function as a temporary accommodation facility for 1,500 asylum seekers - over a pedestrian vehicular border bridge.
11
New Beginning
Objective The main objective is to design a facility over a border bridge for 1,500 asylum seekers. They will stay there temporarily for 1-2 months until their case is heard by CBP. This space will act as a respite center where they can rehabilitate, interact, and plan their future. The project must be conceived as a solution to the growing immigrant crisis, wherein asylum seekers are being refuted by countries. Between climate change and the chaos of global politics, the humanitarian crisis over the next decades will remain paramount. Thoughtful design cannot prevent that inevitability, but it can alleviate some of the sufferings that our fellow humans will endure.
Function Inclusivity Safety Project must retain its primary function of pedestrians and vehicles crossing the border
Inclusivity To create a safe, inclusive environment where people can access fundamental rights and live with dignity
Robust The design should be robust to ensure low maintenance and less hassle
Safety Creating safe boundaries around, so that immigrants don’t cross the border illegally

User Reasons for Migration
For people seeking immediate asylum in States. It takes 1.5-2 months till they get a response
For people fighting their case for deportation in States, temporary seeking refugee in Mexico
An asylum seeker is essentially a person who has left their home country under extreme circumstances and is seeking refuge in another.
People who have been deported from US. They can’t go back to States till 10-20 years
Migrant having travelled from other countries in search for a better livelihood and to get away from violence

Location Eagle Pass - Piedras Negras international Bridge Piedras Negras, one of the border cities of Mexico with a 62% crime rate is a dangerous place for immigrants seeking stability. Further, the city saw it’s main shelter housing immigrants shut down due to a lack of funds. This led to people setting up makeshift tents near bridges, on roads with many moving to neighbor migrant cities. Having no designated space of their own, they are left to be exploited. It hence becomes important to activate rehabilitation spaces that could distribute immigrant populations and create a safe environment. Built in 1927, the Eagle Pass-Piedras Negras International Bridge is a pedestrian and vehicular border bridge (no commercial use) which crosses the Rio Grande connecting the United States-Mexico border cities of Eagle Pass, Texas and Piedras Negras, Coahuila. The bridge was reconstructed in 1954 after it got destroyed by flood

Concept Welcome to “Micro-City where refugees can find security and temporary rest while waiting for their visas. The goal of this project is to create a welcoming space that not only provides safety and comfort during a difficult time but also a place they can connect with others in a similar situation so that they can focus on the small things that are positive like family, new and old friends. The aim of the project is to design a communal living center with amenities. In this design, security is being set up in the forms of security posts at the two entries at each end of the center and accommodations with all the amenities like bathrooms, beds, and storage will be in the form of housing blocks with shared courtyards which not only provide shelter but also the opportunity for communal activities. There are also offices that will provide necessary services like refugee information, medical care, counseling, daycare, and adult training, etc.

Green Design Features
Solar Panels Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. Because of the hot semi-arid climate, which has hot summers and mild or warm winters, of the site, there is plenty of sunlight that could be utilized. Solar panels are great for this project because this is an independent center that cannot rely on any nation for resources, it is important for it to be self-sustaining in some aspect.

Vertical Growing Pods Vertical growing pods are a kind of vertical farming system that grows food using vertical inclined space so that more food is grown per square meter compared to a field or a greenhouse. A perfect combination of natural and artificial lights are used. Instead of soil, peat moss or coconut husks or non-soil mediums are used. Various sustainability features are used to offset the energy cost of farming. Vertical farming uses 95 percent less water than the traditional method. As a part of the effect of turning this project into more of an off-grid center, it is a great idea to have a way to produce vegetables and fruit. This could also provide a great bonding opportunity for the refugees.

Aesop
Aesop is an Australian luxury beauty brand established in 1987 with its headquarter in Melbourne and has offices and stores around the world. In addition to skincare, Aesop also produces hair care, soaps, and fragrance. Their objective has always been to formulate skin, hair and body care products of the finest quality; they investigate widely to source plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients and use only those with a proven record of safety and efficacy. Staying true to Aesop’s aesthetics and company values, The design goal was to create a welcoming and comfortable work environment. Aesop has collaborated with a number of different designers for its store interiors around the world. In an interview, the brand’s founder Dennis Paphitis explained that no two stores are the same. I wanted to put my own spin of Aesop style by bringing the signature sink design from its retail stores into the showroom/boardroom to showcase what Aesop is to clients. By incorporating a gym, I wanted to show that offices in the 21st century are more than just a workspace, they are people’s second home.

Inspiration was drawn from the 1959 movie North by Northwest since the brand itself uses the glasses worn by Cary Grant as inspiration. Oliver Peoples’ commitment to timeless design and craftsmanship is reflected in every product which is why I incorporated a workshop into this project. I want customers to have a chance to see what goes into every product. This is a retail space where customers can take their time to choose a product. The Heritage Hall where the project is located in a historical building in Vancouver, dating back to 1914 located on Main Street, in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

Hygge
Hygge, a Norwegian term for wellbeing, frequently described as “coziness” or “togetherness” in English the term has no literal translation. The core concept of it is a celebration of warmth, happiness, and togetherness. Moments from slipping into a hot bath to enjoying a hot morning coffee with family and friends are just two simple examples. The spirit of hygge is about being inspired to make quality time for family and friends but also being motivated to be by yourself and the ability to just be present. In this residential project, I want to incorporate the concept of Hygge in the form of an inviting living area for social occasions with loved ones, cozy private areas for cozying up with a good book.
