Scent of Smell Research & Thoughts New Lab
The first day I went to Lab class I met with the topic of Technology ,to combine with craftsmanship .My memory in TU/e flashed back ,and the feeling of some projects there are vague for me .Because I feel the technology has to be involved in those project rather than being needed naturally in the project . So my intention is generally to stay away from it .
MY STORY ABOUT THIS LAB
But I like to make things ,to know the skills like glass blowing .And I realize technology is a so wide definition ,that electronics is just a corner of it .The temperature of glass suit for blowing ,the way of how to absorb smell from plants ,those knowledge if I learn I can apply in my own ideas .Being new and creativity are the quality of technology ,same in the design .When Daeun proposed to make perfume in our group ,I think this mysterious perfume topic involves many things I want to know and this involves the whole process of one product as Salvo talking about mass production and market. This new Lab requires self researching and planning .The good contact we have by hands ,but the time is the issue in this team project .When the perfume expert in Paris told us she would be so busy during the time we
were able to visit ,I think we all feel disappointed like the dream bubble hits against ground .This journey we expected to learn a lot about making perfume and the market knowledge .By knowing the visit in plan ,I didn’t do deep research about the perfume making .The time in the first couple weeks is spent slowly in progress . The visit of Wim in Antwerp is the first time for me to experience with so many different perfume .The fragrance comes from words in internet to the real experience of smell .Fantastic ! The experience with Ingrid ,about her knowledge of essence from different plants ,how to help improve people’s life ,extends my awareness about the scent of smell .From this experience I am motivated to talk more often with different people even I thought it’s not relevant in the beginning ,but at the end there’s always something new I can learn .The visit of glass worker studio lets me know another way people make glass shape .Even the price shocked us and the Leerdam workshop is way too expensive for our workshop visit ,it’s good to know in advance for next project . I think I didn’t contribute my full hands into this Lab project .Too much water in my main ingredients .It tastes damp and loose .Some of my ideas need more time to
be realized ,to be tested .I will start to do stuff earlier and dive with the interest .Try to deny the excuse for my laziness .Yes! If there’s another time of Lab ,I will dig deeper in this topic of smell and act and play with it much more .I like this team atmosphere ,cozy and not pushing ,though two of members left after waiting for blank for too long I think .The knowledge of participating in a team and making the energy out of everybody is what I like to try more !
DAE in my eyes and heart
It’s spacious , it’s trembling . The energy flows so vividly that something may happen and move at any moment . Which also gives me the feeling of uncertainty . Uncertainty to do work or not . I prefer to hold myself from the environment and work more on my own time or my own space . That’s how I feel in the workshop . The voice of the wood machine ,the music in clay workshop ,the smell of the plastic workshop etc. they let me focus in my own world .
When I am in the open student space ,I hardly find place to indulge in my world . There we are connected in a more spontaneous way .Where there are different meetings ,cheering out ,the freedom lets me travel somewhere else in my imagination . If there’s a couch ,an enclosed couch where I can hide or rest from the public for a moment ,maybe I can find my rhythm of working . Or the place is meant for people to flow through ,not to stay ,to squat . SOmetime too many people make me not eager to participate in the school space .To snatch resources from a crowd is too hard for me .
In that world ,land ,people ,tree ,soil ,cloud are square .
I need time to adapt to know this new world , to build the desired academy . The little different academy I want .
The idea is to have a better academy ,and show to others by minecraft .But I take more time to know the software and gain enough resource to
With a pool , more plants the water keeps room at certain humidity ,not too dry . The space to talk with ,and have playfulness .
o build .To manage something I don’t know to build I know in my mind is frustrated .It beats my enthusiasm and Lego toys will attract me more !
Making Soap
1.measure the amount of NaOH needed and solve in water 2.measure the different oils and mix together 3.when the temperatures of both 1&2 are similar to 50 celsius degree , pour the solution of NaOH into the oil by 5 times 4.mix for a long time until the liquid tend to feel like corn starch soup ,then add extra oil like jojoba and extract fragrance like jasmine 5.mix well and then pour the combination to the mold .BUT leave 5 percent ,and mix the left with colored plant powder like tea powder 6.drip the left solution in the same mold ,randomly and draw lines by a spread 7.when the pattern is done as long as you like ,cover the mold in a heat preserving box for one night
8.take the soap out from the mold and cut them 9.leave the soap in shade for a month and then use them !
Extracting Fragrance from Plant There are generally 6 ways to get fragrance from plant according to wikipedia .I tried some possible one at home . They are pepper mint ,pineapple,orange peels ,Tea ,Gongka leaves ,Lemmon Zest ,flower peddles .
It’s said most part of the body which release the smell most strongly is from the most hairy part . So if I use the material wool to make a releasing medium .
I have interests to find something to wear to carry the perfume and releasing along the time .The function of old style pen made from feather trigers me this idea .
A mini perfume holder with tubes from feather ,which hopefully can release gently ,slowly .
A smell happens to appear by purpose .The result is unpredictable ,through different circumstances . An invasion ? A surprise ? An invisible thing makes a visible fantasy . In ancient China , the pleasant smell from flowers ,wood etc. were held in an embroidered small bag .To be carried with people , to be sent as a gift for amour . The male musk deer releases scent to attract female one . The flower releases fragrance to attract bees to transport the pollens to other flowers . For us ,the smell is something hard to describe ,but something is described by the smell . Amor is the complicate thing to express . A perfume for people to express their amor ? When people see someone they like ,they will get nervous ,they start to rub fingers ,grib fist ... So I am thinking something release smell when someone start to rub it .
