To make flexible places that can adapt to current times, respond to the users' behaviors, and open to evolutionary rules instead of close and strict codes.

Multi-center city Los Angeles is probably one the most disperse city in the United States. It has many different centers, which have different cultures and characters. Those centers are always competing with each other by grabbing the resources to make themselves stronger. So will there be a winner in the future? I don't think so. This is a game with no reward.

Open Source In the perspective of the whole city's development, the diverse cultures and identities of different places are great assets. If I can find a way to let different centers share their unique products instead of competing with each other, the collaboration could greatly improve each centers' development, and people will no longer need to drive far away for a particular product, because that product could be moved to their center.
Travellers (People from other centers)
Caravanseria Therefore, this incubator, which is a mixed use place with maximum possibilities could be a stop for different products from other centers. It shouldn't be just cheap copies, but something that can increase the value of that products, as a tailor. Silks will be moved to here, and be fabricated. A place like caravanserai is a good example. A caravanserai is a roadside inn where traders (commerce) and travelers (cultural pollinators) can rest and recover from the day's journey as they do business. Its value isn't the center space for marketing, but the circulation created by the traders lived here.
Citizens (People from Downtown)

Skateboard Since this is a place for both the locals and the users from other centers, it should be flexible for various users. A skater, unlike typical pedestrian, experiences space just as intensely and consciously, albeit in a different way. He/she is alive to the possibility of space, not in its totality, as an architect would be, but as a collection of tactile surfaces to be jumped on, grinded, and conquered.

One of the methods of changing the speed of pedestrains is to control the height-width ratio(HWR). As the vision of the site is decreasing with the lower HWR, people may walk faster due to less attraction of the site.

By analysing the speed around the site, I figured out the major task of this project, to overcome the high speed arterial roads on the connection between chinatown and a small neighborhood. In this case, changing the speed of the connection will be necessary to bring a lively life back to this old industrial area.

Accelerate/Decelerate I rotate the normal buildings to a more random shape, and give the access from ground level to another level. In this way, the speed of the locals and the others will be changed. By changing the speed, I can have more opportunities to play with 2 kinds of flows here. Lower speed of pedestrian flows can increase their consciousness, and they will be more open-minded to the surroundings. Considering the skater's actions, 3 kinds of forms come into of my mind: lines, edges, and barriers. I can get 6 units from those forms. Since every form, connection, and activity can find an appropriate speed, speed is a common measurement for them. Therefore, the speed in this place is the foundation of the project. In this way, the connections will have their own combinations of 3 units, and those units will give them particular forms to control the speed. The attractions for other centers can also be applied to the connections. Cooking school

Multiple What does modernism mean to Paris? This diagram shows the analysis from 2 dimensions: time and scale. Green line means positive, red line means negative.
“OPEN BLOCK from Christian De Portzamparc The work foucu on research and concerns the quality of living space and the understanding of the city. From buildings to urban re-think, the town is a founding principal of his work, developing in parallel and in crossover along three major lines: community oriented buildings, towers, and neighborhoods (from the block to the major city development)

Connection Identity Space
Dark color means more private space, even though they maybe public space. Paris structure has more openness, because it hides the private space.
SEMAPA is developing the whole area. The character of this place is that new buildings will cover the existing rail. So the level of the new buildings will be the same to the boulevard next to it. But there will also be a level change between the new buildings and the existing warehouse. SEMAPA's plan for the warehouse is to turning it into an incubator. Now some buildings have been built or under construction. The new plan for that area is still under review. My objective is to design the open space between the new buildings and the incubator and to make them being connected as a whole project.

Some of the programs on the promenade can share an entrance to private properties. In this way, this passage overlaps with the private programs. More local people can use the entrances on the pedestrian street, increasing the pedestrian flow. The space can be easily changed by just closing the entrance. Public and private space can be interchangeable. It is a safer entrance than the one on the backyard.

“The lack of resources is no longer an excuse not to act. The idea that action should only be taken after all the answers and the resources have been found is a sure recipe for paralysis. The planning of a city is a process that allows for corrections; it is supremely arrogant to believe that planning can be done only after every possible variable has been controlled. - Jaime Lerner Architect, urbanist, former mayor of Curitiba, Brazil

TOD( Transit Oriented Development ) project along the Central Avenue in Phoenix Midtown is searching for a solution for the extension of TOD project in Phoenix. We think it's an opportunity to achieve a new character for this conventional financial district. People can work here, but more importantly, they will also be able to live here and play here. A network can be applied. The private properties should have a liability to frame a community friendly environment.

BEFORE

Traditional planning could have great impacts on the district. New projects, which follow general strategies, will frame the city's context. While overall strategies come out through cautious considerations and countless meetings, we cannot disregard the possibility of failure. Small-scale improvements are increasingly seen as a way to stage more substantial investments. In this project, I start with 3 tactics to allow local people to test the several events. All of the events refer to the possible land uses from planning. This approach provides feedbacks from users, testing new concept before making any political or financial commitments.

VISION OF GENERAL PLAN The Heritage District will be a destination to visit, shop, work and live. It will be a place where new residents can visit and connect with the Town’s origin. The Heritage District will again, be the vital center of the Town. MY VISION Modern forms, simple lifestyle 35Retrospective Modernism
Retrospect
Retrospective Modernism could be the solution of Gilbert Village. My motivation is to transform the old town, and to maintain the old lifestyle. Simplicity can hardly survive in a big city, but it is the native symbol of a small town. People may appreciate the symplicity here. It won't be a quiet town, but it can let people focus on their daily life.

Rynthm + Diversity
Cultures in Seattle are disperse. Different cultures celebrate their festivals in different locations and different dates. Even though, people are living in the same city, they can hardly share the identities from their various backgrounds. How to make a hybrid place that can include the culture resources in the city? In this diagram, I list 2 symbolic festivals in each month and identify them with the Lewis Model. Next step is to re-arrange them. Rule 1: diversify the festivals in each month Rule 2: increase the festivals in warm seasons. The new arrangement of festivals could be the attractor of this new place. By creating places that are flexible for different events, people may experience the interactions of different cultures. Amazon will have chances to engage the community by providing services to trigger this process.
