Abstract
‘The Garden of Eden’ is a bold interpretation of God’s Garden wherein the floral and trees are an imagined species of hybrids. The colourful blossoms of Spring represents the beauty that the floral of life offers while the almagated body parts represents the hedonistic nature of paradise. Illustrated with reference to the style of bontanical illustrations, this piece is an introduction to various new species of Chimeras that are meant to represent the dualistic nature of all things alluring; seemingly innocent yet not quite so. What nature tries to hide we might never know and it might be beyond scicence but we can always take a guess.

Moodboard 02 Bill Crisafi Initially, I had the idea of representing the skeletal structures of plants but I came across Bill Crisafi’s works that combined human body parts with plants and I found it intriguing how it can be so ghastly yet elegant at the same time hence it inspired to try and do the same but not in such a dark tone as I believe a more cheerful one will give more of a surprise and juxtaposition. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/322992604521071544/ https://www.pinterest.com/pin/137430226113043814/ https://www.pinterest.com/pin/720153796645687842/ https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/55450639149169473/

Moodboard 02. Dan Funderburgh On Ina’s suggestion, I went to look into toile art which is derived from the term ‘Toille de Jouy” meaning a type of wallpaper with typically complicated and repeated patterns rendered in a single colour and depictive of life or floral. I across this artist whose art style I find very intricate especially with his use of lines to do the shadows. https://www.debutart.com/artist/dan-funderburgh

Moodboard 03. Carlo Chiostri While doing my typographic assignment, I came across the illustrator for the original illustrations of Pinocchio and I was interested in the way he uses lines to depict the light and darks and how lines create a very vintage look. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlo_Chiostri https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6hWywulI1A

Sketches I tried some variations in sketch first and Ina’s feedback was that they had to look more vintage so I decided to look more into using lines to bring out the shadows.

02. Lineart and Colouring I went back and used the lines and it really looked much more vintage and I decided to go with more pastel colours to portray the innocence of Eden’s flowers.

Image Tracing Because I did this in a non-adobe software, I was afraid the graphics would not be clear so I decided to convert them through image trace in illustrator and it resulted in this effect that darkened the shadows and made everything cleaner.

Pattern Swatches I split the swatches into more bright looking ones and darker looking ones so as to convey the duality of the garden!
