ANALYSIS OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

Poor regional transport planning makes it difficult to disperse foot traffic. Currently, there are several abandoned vacant lots on the site, and the surrounding buildings are in a state of disrepair and urgently need renewal.

DESIGN STRATEGY

The design re-planned the functional zoning and sorted out the traffic routes. Based on the preservation of historical buildings, the current abandoned open space and buildings are renovated, and a riverfront landscape zone is designed.

MIND MAPPING

The project starts with the protection of historic districts, taps into the city's representative historical lineage, and designing a characteristic waterfront landscape space to promote the development of the city's cultural and tourism industry and revive the regional economy.

02

COMMERCIAL DISTRICT DESIGN ANALYSIS Firstly, the design was updated to meet the needs of the residents and the current problems of the commercial area. The overall planning of the building layout and architectural design, and the design of a sky corridor to connect the central area. In addition, sky gardens were added to the buildings to create a unique landscape.

ARCHITECTURAL GENERATION

Secondly, the spaces and roads within the site were reorganized to create varied and exciting spaces, and green spaces were designed. A diverse and continuous cascade of green spaces forms a complete riverfront landscape.

INDUSTRIAL PARK DESIGN ANALYSIS

ANALYSIS OF FUNCTIONS

The area was originally deserted vacant land and buildings. As the area is adjacent to the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, the area is planned as a cultural and creative industrial park. The industrial park complex is designed in a sub-area and pocket parks are designed along the streets.

RURAL RIVERSIDE LANDSCAPE DESIGN

SITE ANALYSIS The site is located along the Sheshui River, in Liuhe Village, Dawu County, Xiaogan City, Hubei Province. The area has convenient transportation and the village covers an area of 6.6 square kilometers, 716 households, and a population of 2636 people.

Xiaogan City belongs to a subtropical monsoon climate. It has frequent northeast and southwest winds, distinct four seasons, abundant rainfall, sufficient sunlight, warm and humid weather.

This project effectively solves the current problems of rural rivers and creates a pleasant rural riverfront landscape system. At the same time, this project hopes that the village can give full play to its unique advantages and combine cultural industries with tourism to promote regional economic development.

RIVER COURSE DESIGN According to precipitation analysis, there is less water during dry periods which makes it difficult for people to use the river water. Therefore, a cascade storage method is designed for the river channel to collect water locally for convenient human use. During flood periods, excess river water will flow downstream through a central trough while regular cleaning of fallen leaves or debris inside the trough is necessary to prevent blockage.

CASCADE WATER STORAGE NODES This water storage measure is built every 50 meters in the river course. There are few fish in the river, so it would not affect fish migration.

PASTORAL COMPREHENSIVE EXPERIENCE CENTER

Combined with local characteristic industries, this area is designed as a pastoral comprehensive experience center, where visitors can visit the sweet potato picking and vermicelli processing process, understand agricultural knowledge, and experience the whole process of sweet potato picking and processing. At the same time, the interior also sells fan products to create special catering.

ANALYSIS OF PLANTS

The design retains local trees, all of which are native species, which is easy to survive and maintain. Camphor trees and willow trees are planted at intervals along the Sheshui River; pine trees and maples are planted on both sides of the roadway. The shrub selection is mainly red-leaved heather. Aquatic plants such as reeds, Miscanthus sinensis and wild rice are selected in the river course, accompanied by plants such as self-growing mosses. Ornamental herbs such as calamus and celandine are planted in appropriate places, which can increase the ornamental nature of the river bank and purify microorganisms and impurities in the water.

BACKGROUND

With the increasing cost of living and employment pressure, young people are under increasing pressure. Recently, we have noticed that people’s interest in temples continues to climb yearly, and many young people like to go to temples to pray for a smooth life.

DECOMPRESSION SPACE DESIGN

The essence of how temple prayers can relieve stress for young people

The act of praying and making wishes can itself be seen as a way to release life’s pressures. When people face uncertainties, difficulties, and challenges in life, they may seek a means to express their hopes, fears, and desires, and praying and making wishes offer such an opportunity.

USER INTERVIEW

Based on the problem of high pressure of young people nowadays, this project is more suitable for contemporary young people with a sense of ritual in the form, combined with the traditional Buddhist temple praying for blessings and modern interactive technology, to create an interactive space to relieve stress.

11

STIE ANALYSIS

The most stressed groups in the city are concentrated in university students and office workers. Therefore, three nodes are selected as examples based on the distribution of universities and enterprises in Shenzhen. This design is universally adaptable and can be applied to multiple sites due to its small site area, which facilitates pressure relief for the surrounding population.

Incorporating interactive technology into spatial design can bring people a better experience. The design makes people experience the space with a sense of ritual through the process of seeking blessings, obtaining artifacts, consecrating, and redeeming vows, thus relieving stress.

EPILOGUE

The phenomenon of “Praying to the Buddha” is a youth subculture that emerged during the period of social transformation, reflecting the multiple existential situations and social mentality of young people, such as anxiety, confusion and entanglement, and implying the behaviour of young people seeking to heal themselves after being subjected to intense social changes. The project creates a spiritual sanctuary in the urban jungle, where the ancient ritual of making a wish is reinterpreted from a modern and innovative perspective.

14

SITE ANALYSIS

04

The site is located in Tianhu Village, Tianjin, and the buildings in the village are traditional bungalows with northern slopes. Most of the people in the village are over 60 years old, and there is a lack of spatial planning in the village, thus it is in urgent need of overall improvement.

ELDERLY-ORIENTED RETROFITTING OF BUILDING AND YARD

Architectural Design Location: Tianjin.China Site area: about 377.5 ㎡ Duration: 07/2021-09/2021 Student: Chong Qiu (Indivisual Academic Work) Instructor: Yijia Wang Email: yjwang@cau.edu.cn

The project selected a typical traditional courtyard in northern China for renovation. In view of the fact that many elderly people live in the village, the building was retrofitted to be suitable for aging, and the barrier-free facilities and indoor and courtyard layouts were optimized.

The data show that the rural migrant workers are mainly 20-40 years old and primarily engaged in the secondary and primary industries. Data Sources: National Bureau of Statistics

ANALYSIS OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

Due to their long-term disrepair, there are many problems and hidden dangers in the structure of villagers' self-built houses.

DESIGN STRATEGY

Based on the current situation of the aging population, the project aims to enhance the quality of life of the elderly. It conducts age-appropriate building and courtyard design to create a safe, comfortable and healthy living environment for the residents.

Problem 4 Building Structure:

Since most of the buildings are built by farmers with weak building knowledge and are in disrepair for a long time.

Problem 2 Courtyard Space:

The courtyard space is too dull, without landscape and activity space.

Problem 5 Indoor Space:

The toilet and kitchen of the house are not connected with the living room and bedroom.

Problem 3 Building Facade:

The window opening on the building facade is small, which is not conducive to indoor sunshine.

Problem 6 Interior Decoration:

The interior decoration is too old, which may cause safety hazards.

During my undergraduate studies, I participated in many competitions and was fortunate to have two of my projects completed and put into use. One of them is located in a rural area and the other is in an urban area, both of which were typical. These projects have given me a deep understanding of how the knowledge I learned in the classroom can be applied in practice.
