life”. Climate change caused many natural disasters especially in tropical countries such as Malaysia which recently faced flooding in the capital city, Kuala Lumpur as well. Flood occurs almost every year, particularly during the monsoon season and caused many people displaced. More and more floods are happening nowadays even in the city. Homo sapiens make the Earth sick so we need to work together to take proactive and pragmatic actions such as implementing green design and lifestyle to treat climate change.

Kuala Lumpur's most prominent retail belt that is home to many landmark shopping centres, al-fresco cafés, bars, night markets, food street, mamak stalls as well as hawker-type eateries. This area is popular among tourists and locals, especially among the youths. It is accessible easily by multiple choices of public transport within and outside of Kuala Lumpur such as MRT, monorail, and bus.

Site Background

1950s - 60s

2018s

Bukit Bintang established on late 1950s. The local scene was centred on a former cabaret and amusement centre known as BB Park. Most of the areas are relatively undeveloped. 1960s saw development and consolidation of BB as a activity hub.

Establishing of MRT stations on BB has seen improvement on visiting rate of Bukit Bintang. Increasing convenience to reach Bukit Bintang.

Late 1980s-1990s

2010s

A prominent commercial hub of the city, where many Chinese entrepreneurs originally set up businesses along the stretch. The area is beginning to experience modernisation, gradually transforming into a commercial hub as YTL corporation develops interest.

Bukit Bintang Street is currently the main street in downtown Kuala Lumpur. It is the backbone of that part ot the city called The Golden Triangle and which is home to the latest and trendiest shopping malls, 5-star hotels, entertainment centers in Kuala Lumpur.

engkat Tong Shin flies largely under the radar of locals in Kuala Lumpur. A quieter, smaller sibling to the city’s nearby famous eat street, Jalan Alor. It is home to several well-regarded backpacker haunts and is a stop on KL’s Hop-on, Hop-off bus. History suggests that Tengkat Tong Shin became an upmarket lane and home to wealthy Chinese with some rather smart terrace houses having been erected here. Its residential status declined after 1969, partly because more desirable addresses opened up in the expanding suburbsThe lane became slightly edgy as many inner city areas around the world can become but about a decade or so ago, changes to rental control freed up some of these places and now they are more commercial than residential in intent.

The lane can best be described as mixed use with a couple of substantive hotels, backpacker guesthouses, numerous spa and reflexology centres, hawker stalls, restaurants, bars, and shops. While definitely not the most glamorous part of the city, it has lots of character, with the small detail more of interest here rather than any iconic structur. While Tengkat Tong Shin has no defining ‘wow’ qualities, it is a short lane in downtown Kuala Lumpur located near the iconic streets of Jalan Alor and Changkat Bukit Bintang and warrants a slow stroll to admire the detail..

The 8 House stacks lively urban neighborhood into horizontal layers of typologies connected by a continuous promenade and cycling path up to the 10th floor creating a three-dimensional urban neighborhood where suburban life merges with the energy of a big city, where business and housing co-exist.

A continuous public path stretches from street level to the penthouses and allows people to bike all the way from the ground floor to the top, moving alongside townhouses with gardens, winding through an urban perimeter block.

Two sloping green roofs are placed to reduce the urban heat island effect as well as providing the visual identity to the project and tying it back to the adjacent farmlands towards the south.
