QLA Mission and Vision
Academic Affairs Milestones The major areas of focus for 2013-2014 school year has been to create a: viable curriculum, offer effective feedback to all students, create a safe and orderly environment and a collaborative environment for all faculty. To reach the above goals we focused on three initiatives. The three initiatives were the implementation of a one on one technology plan, increasing our MAP scores and school wide literacy program. Our one on one technology plan has been a major focus this year with the launching of our Google Dashboard for daily classroom use. All students received a chromebook this year and many of the lesson plans and work was available online for the cadets to access. Technological advancement is an aspect of life that the world cannot shun any more. The introduction of chrome books to the classrooms is a concept that QLA has embraced with enthusiasm. The need for chrome books has been associated with quite a number of advantages. The advantage of portability that these gadgets come with is hard to ignore. Field trips and investigations simplified due to the portability aspects. The chrome books provide immediate access to data for processing and development of feedback from graphics. Facilitation of works allocated in groups and the sharing of files within students are added advantages of these systems. They also generate reports and encourage innovativeness within the students. Chrome books have inbuilt abilities that make them favorable for use in classrooms. Their inbuilt large capacity storage systems that link to the cloud connectivity are an advantage it has over other laptops in academic use. The fact that most of the books are huge in volume and require large space for storage makes it complex to use other systems since external storage sources will be required.
embracing technology in the classrooms is inevitable. The specific use of chrome books at QLA has been advantageous and connects our cadets to a community that develops together. The Google Dashboard allows for students to receive and give work online. All comments and grading is done online which creates a paperless system that is easier for overall organization and prepares the cadets for the responsible use of technology. Our one on one technology plan allows for an effective feedback system that in some cases occurs as the student is actively working on an assignment. Our students also took the MAP tests this year in the Fall and Spring allowing the school to use data driven support for curriculum and academic changes. Our MAP scores allow us to answer the crucial question: Are my students learning? With the data we are able to better monitor the success of our cadets and areas of concern to continue to drive all academic changes based on real data. Our school wide literacy program is another school wide initiative and strategy to help the overall reading and comprehension of our cadets. Literacy is the foundation of the core classes the cadets are required to take. Our literacy program bridges the gap between the different courses and allows for interdisciplinary planning. The school wide literacy program creates an environment in which all faculty have to work together and support the ultimate goal of student success. This year all faculty worked in collaboration to use the literacy plan in all classes and reflect on its success. Our MSA mid-term report was turned in for review. We will continue to work on planning and preparing for improvement with the support of MSA
The fact that Google chrome opens immediately means how fast it is, advantaging it over other gadgets. The ability to store power for a long time also advantages them. Based on the above items, it is justifiable as to why

Leadership Earth Day April 22nd 2014
Honour Guards
Kick-off to our 2nd Annual Earth Day was the welcoming of staff who either car-pooled or walked to work to demonstrate their commitment to reducing CO2 emmisions into the environment:
50 cadets in grade 7 – 11 were involved in 2 Honour Guard activities in May – the QF Universities Convocation Event on May 6, and our graduation ceremonies on 28 May. Military staff and cadets worked additional hours to ensure the professionalism of these events.
Leadership Activities: • Gr 11/12 Abseiling – during leadership classes in midApril, the Gr 11/12 cadets demonstrated their courage and determination by rappelling off of the 16 m wall. • Gr 11 – Methods of Instruction – Gr 11 cadets were tasked with using the EDIP (Explain, Demonstrate, Imitate, and Practice) method of instruction to teach individual and small group skills. Several teachers were excellent practice students for the Gr 11 instructors:
Fitness Weight-Loss The fitness weight-loss group has been fortunate of the coaching of our Qatar Military staff. The group has been working out daily during leadership time, starting each workout with intensive programming in the weight room and then a cardio activity. Participants have improved their fitness levels (increased ability for push-ups and sit-ups) as well as weight-loss.
• Gr 7 – 10 Command Tasks – For their final practical evaluation of the year, Gr 7 – 10 cadets were tasked with problem solving in small groups. Each cadet was assigned to lead one task and evaluated by leadership staff and faculty on their leadership skills: effective planning, communication, and directing others. Thank you to our staff members who volunteered to assist in evaluating the command tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to see leadership in action – in addition to the positive engagement of cadets in experiential activities.

Leadership
Beach Clean-up and BBQ During the final week of leadership – Gr 7 – 11 groups went to the beach to clean the area and BBQ at the beach. Cadets worked together to set-up and cook their planned meals. This was a challenge due to the windy weather most days that week:
Student Council Events • Movie Nights in the QLA Auditorium : QLA Student Council finished the 2013-2014 school year with a flurry of fun events; beginning with two movie nights in the auditorium, one for grades seven and eight, another for grades nine and ten. The council surveyed students to help pick the movie, organized and operated the tech, served snacks and cleaned up at the end of the event. Students enjoyed themselves and showed good leadership; hopefully we can host more movie nights next year! • Soapy Soccer Tournament on the Football Pitch: Student council followed up the success of movie night with an extremely fun soapy soccer tournament on the football pitch. Music blasted, the sun was beaming and everyone who played was covered in water, soap and smiles at this fun and refreshing event. Soapy Soccer was another great event that we hope to bring back next year! The student council did a wonderful job of organizing and coordinating the event with QLA departments, but the event would not have worked without all the help and support from QLA Public Relations and Facilities Management.
