The autobiography of Kuwaiti telecoms pioneer Saad Al Barrak is to be published in Arabic by Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing. A Passion for Adventure: Turning Zain into a Telecom Giant was originally to be published in English in March 2012. He also discusses challenging times, such as Iraq’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait in the early 1990s. The Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) is supporting a University of Chicago summer fellowship program that aims to find innovative ways to use data to solve real-world humanitarian problems. The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Data Science for Social Good Fellowship sees 36 aspiring data scientists work with government and non-profit organizations. QCRI is contributing one of the projects for the fellowship; studying the potential to quickly and accurately measure disaster damage using tweets sent on Twitter. The project will compare tweets about damage and casualties during recent natural disasters, with hard data about the actual destruction.
