Zain’s story receives Arabic publication PUBLISHING

The autobiography of Kuwaiti telecoms pioneer Saad Al Barrak is to be published in Arabic by Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing. A Passion for Adventure: Turning Zain into a Telecom Giant was originally to be published in English in March 2012. The memoirs cover Al Barrak’s life story and business philosophy, and reveals how he transformed Zain from a state-owned operator to an international giant with 72 million customers across 23 countries. He also discusses challenging times, such as Iraq’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait in the early 1990s. The Arabic edition, due out in August, will be promoted with launch events across the Middle East. Saad Al Barrak’s memoirs have been translated into Arabic and will be published by BQFP.

QCRI supports humanitarian research project in the USA Project will compare tweets about damage and casualties. The Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) is supporting a University of Chicago summer fellowship program that aims to find innovative ways to use data to solve real-world humanitarian problems. The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Data Science for Social Good Fellowship sees 36 aspiring data scientists work with government and non-profit organizations. QCRI is contributing one of the projects for the fellowship; studying the potential to quickly and accurately measure disaster damage using tweets sent on Twitter. The project will compare tweets about damage and casualties during recent natural disasters, with hard data about the actual destruction.
