Reflections We are now about midway into our second quarter and as we look back at the past 4 months, I see a lot of promise. It is nice to see so many confident, productive cadets at QLA moving toward their dreams. We began the year with goals, two of which were to grow as critical thinkers and learners. Our mechanism toward these goals is to focus on reading, writing, research and project work, sharpening math skills and making technology an integral part of every course. We have seen our cadets make strides in literacy and vocabulary, which we have integrated into every course through the use of vocabulary walls in every class. We are also working hard to increase reading fluency. While the- se arduous tasks remain ahead throughout the year, we are reminded that readers are leaders. QLA teachers began the year assessing to gain baseline data on student performance. This baseline data included tests, writing prompts and MAP testing. When baseline data was collected we were able to start defining areas of fo- cus. As the quarter moves toward a close, and midterms near, the coming four weeks will be another opportunity to assess student data and ultimately make any needed changes to our curriculum. Although data assessments are critical academically, we also applied and found them to be the driving force for our PBIS program. How can we make our cadets positive members of our school community? This is the guiding ques- tion that helps define our student life “curriculum”. Our area of focus here is to help establish independent learners who hopefully will make those decisions which, positively impact their community, country, and world. Zarmina Hotaki Principal

Qatar Leadership Academy helps students build upon their positive experiences at QLA to gain admission into colleges and universities of their choice. Applying to colleges and universities is an exciting and revealing experience which gives students a chance to look at who they are, what they value, and what they might want to do with their lives. It can also be a complicated, demanding, and time-consuming process. QLA college counselor helps guide, support, and counsel students and parents as they research schools, make choices, select and visit universities, and complete applications. So far, 40% of our students have successfully submitted their applications to multiple universities worldwide. Two students have received conditional offers from the University of East London, Swansea University and Portsmouth University, UK. QLA is proud of their accomplishments thus far. With such positive momentum at QLA, I hope to be able to share more great news in the near future. Louis Petersen - College Counselor
I hate Math! Who created Math! Why are we doing this? Where am I going to use math in the future! We as Math teachers are accustomed to hearing these phrases from our students. It is a huge challenge for a Math teacher to motivate students to do math. Our QLA Math Department con-‐ tinuously tries to see how we can present more relevant infor-‐ mation to our students and motivate them in regards to Math. To compliment that effort, we have started showing them the use of math in daily life. We encourage them to see math pat-‐ terns in different structures in Qatar and around the world. We have also initiated different kinds of bell tasks such as ThinkPair-Share, timed worksheets on a basic concept related to the lesson, mental Math and interactive activity on www.myimaths.com, to start our classes at a different note. This also makes our students curious to know how their Math class is going to start each day. Furthermore, we are also planning to introduce the use of Mathematical investigations to develop our students’ skills on pattern recognition, communication and re lection in math. This will also give them an opportunity to be exposed to open ended problems. We are also working on introducing, from se-‐ mester 2, a plan to revisit all the basic concepts that students would need in grades 11 and 12 at regular intervals in grades 7 through 10. This will be a special focus especially in grades 7 and 8 in the form of bell tasks or interactive activities or hands -on activities. This will address the issue of students with dif-‐ ferent learning styles such as Audio, Visual and Kinesthetic learners. I hope all these steps will make Math more appealing and more relevant to our students and that we will be able to motivate our students to do well in Math, which is the ultimate goal of the Math Department at QLA. Grade 12 Product Design Grade 12 students have completed their first project of their Design Technology course which intro- duced them to technologies that are used internationally to produce products, support marketing and enhance their computer literacy skills through website design. The project introduced the topic of CAD/CAM, which is extremely current in the international work- place. CAD represents any drawings or designs drawn with the support of a computer, whereas CAM is when a machine produces that computer drawn design for you. The benefits of CADCAM include increasing accuracy and supporting multiple productions and decreasing the time to produce which increase profits for companies. It was very interesting listening the cadets discuss the examples that they have seen in their lives, this helped understanding on the reliance on Technology and the rele- vance it has to their potential future careers in regarding to advertising, or production in a huge varie- ty of fields and being aware of the consistent changes and developments that happen in this area. The students demonstrated exemplary initiative and maturity through their discussions and support towards each other whilst creating their websites, gathering research, designing and producing CAD and CAM products. Inquiry skills, curiosity and problem solving were elements led by the group to help create quality products and solve problems that arose during the Design Process. The cadets ex- perimented and improved their understanding on the following areas: Google Sketch Up – 3D drawing program (CAD) 2D Design – 2D drawing program (CAD) Laser Cutter – a machine that cuts wood and acrylic using drawings from 2D Design (CAM) Vinyl Cutter – a machine that cuts sticky vinyl using drawings from 2D Design (CAM) Weebly – a website creation site for students to display their work on. The cadets designed and made a wooden mould, drawn on 2D Design and cut from wood on the laser cutter, to create a pewter medallion. They demonstrated great safety skills when using the brazing hearth to melt the pewter. The purpose of the project was to enhance workshop skills alongside un- derstanding the ease of reproducing a product and what impact that can have on industry. Fiona Bayliss DT Teacher
A Rewarding Dialogue with local Ar sts at the “First Atelier Ar sts Workshops” The IB Visual Arts students from Grade 11 and 12 visited the “First Atelier Ar sts Workshops” event at the Recrea on Centre in Educa on City on the 26th of October. It was the first me that such an event has been organized, where the public had the opportunity to see the ar sts crea ng their own artwork in the Atelier! The 11th and 12th Graders cherished those mo-‐ ments of observing ar sts being “hands on” in a truly crea ve environment! They did not miss any opportunity of discussing with many ar sts, who live and work in Doha, about their art, their inspi-‐ ra on sources, and their medium and techniques. It was fantas c to see the enthusiasm and excite-‐ ment during some of the demonstra ons that took place. It has been a very rewarding experi-‐ ence for everybody and a great inspira on to all students. Grade 12 students have been inspired by the ex-‐ pressionis c use of paint that some ar sts have used in their work, whilst Grade 11s have come back to our classroom and finished their S ll-life drawings eagerly to move onto pain ng!

Inside look into Grade 11 Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) and Biology Students in grade 11 ESS and Biology had the opportunity to investigate, explore, and conduct field work. Through these hands on activities, students applied different experimental techniques and lab report writing skills according to the In- ternal Assessment Guidelines of the IB Diploma Program. Students in Grade 11 Biology designed and conducted their own experiment to investigate osmosis. They learned how to design fair experi- ments, collect appropriate data, and analyze data. G10/11/12 cadets carried out some training using the new petrol stoves for camping. Hopefully we will be taking cadets out sometime this academic year to test these skills. They were using the Swedish made Primus cookers to boil water for making tea. A process that all the cadets love to do! Colin Campbell - Leadership Instructor
