As His Majesty The King’s representative in Queensland, I am immensely honoured to present today’s Awards and Decorations under the Australian Honours System.

Recognition through the Australian Honours System is the pre-eminent way our society acknowledges outstanding contributions and remarkable acts of bravery.

On behalf of all Queenslanders, I congratulate you most warmly for your achievements.

Commended for brave conduct for his actions during a dingo attack on K'gari, Queensland on 3 April 2023.

Commended for brave conduct for his actions assisting a neighbour from a house fire in Burrum Heads, Queensland on 3 August 2021.

Mr John Mount Gee

Commended for brave conduct for his actions retrieving a young girl from the Brisbane River in Queensland on 17 April 2021.

Mr John Matthew Gordon

Commended for brave conduct for his actions rescuing a swimmer caught in rough seas at Dreamtime Beach in Fingal Head, New South Wales on 12 April 2023.

Mr Dylan John Lazzaroni

Commended for brave conduct for his actions rescuing a person who had fallen from a waterfall in Mareeba, Queensland on 6 March 2021.

Mr John Danial Stewart

Commended for brave conduct for his actions rescuing a trapped driver from floodwaters in St George, Queensland on 22 February 2020.

Mr Dylan Taylor

Commended for brave conduct for his actions rescuing an unconscious person from a submerged vehicle in Dalby, Queensland on 4 April 2022.

AUSTRALIAN HONOURS AND AWARDS

The Australian Honours and Awards system includes:

• The Order of Australia

• Meritorious awards

• Military awards; and

• Bravery decorations.

Anyone can nominate someone to be recognised through the Order of Australia. Nominations are assessed by the Honours and Awards Secretariat, then considered by the Council of the Order of Australia before recommendations are made to the Governor-General.

To complete a nomination, you will need:

• The nominee’s name, age and contact details

• To explain why they are deserving of award, including details of their actions of service; and

• To provide details of up to four referees to support the nomination.

HISTORY OF GOVERNMENT HOUSE QUEENSLAND

Government House, also known as Fernberg, was built in 1865 for Brisbane merchant Johann Heussler and his family.

It was one of the first houses in the Paddington area, and since 1910 has been the working Vice-Regal residence of the Governor of Queensland.

As a heritage-listed, State-owned residence surrounded by 14 hectares of estate, it is an important Queensland landmark steeped in historical, cultural and environmental significance.

The Fernberg estate has a proud history of serving Queensland produce, and that continues today.

A place for all Queenslanders, Government House regularly hosts free guided tours of the Fernberg House and gardens. Further information can be found on the Government House website via the following QR code.
