Great plays create great conversations every time they are performed. Lee Lewis Artistic Director

Tonight, we are seeing not only the conversations between George and Martha, Nick and Honey, but between Edward and Margaret. Edward Albee and Margaret Harvey. Playwright and Director. American and Australian. A conversation about truth, fear, love, history, men, women and power. This is all meant to provoke conversation in us. Edward Albee is one of America’s great provocateurs. This play was deeply confronting when it met its first audiences in its themes and in its language. The controversy continued when it went to film — ‘Screw you!’ was changed to ‘Goddamn you!’, but the Motion Picture Association of America finally agreed to keep the famous ‘hump the hostess’. Language that seems tame now was wildly aggressive then — but the spirit of provocation still lives inside the play. Edward Albee was fearless in his willingness to expose truths with his words and provoke his audience into seeing themselves. Directors must have great courage to stage those truths in the bodies of actors, live, on a stage, in front of us. You cannot shy away from his spirit of provocation.

The shape that the provocation takes alters in every production. I wish I had seen the Elevator Repair Service production of Everyone’s Fine with Virginia Woolf which included vampires… I want to thank Margaret Harvey for her fearlessness in meeting Albee’s challenges. As a Queensland artist, she enters into the conversation with her unique and powerful voice and makes a case for seeing the politics of the original within us, as opposed to leaving them in their original American frame. I want to thank the extraordinary cast for putting themselves into the Albee/Harvey crucible — courage indeed. I want to thank Mitchell Butel for his vision and the State Theatre Company South Australia for celebrating the talent of Queensland artists. I want to thank Production Partner Griffith University for partnering with Queensland Theatre for 20 years to ensure we create fearless theatre for Queensland audiences. Thank you for being up for a great conversation. — Lee Lewis

QUEENSLAND THEATRE PRESENTS THE STATE THEATRE COMPANY SOUTH AUSTRALIA PRODUCTION OF

EDWARD ALBEE’S

WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? DIRECTED BY MARGARET HARVEY

Nick and his wife Honey are new in town and accept an invitation to an intimate afterparty at the home of George and Martha. As the spirits flow and the conversation grows ominous, the four find themselves locked in a cruel sparring match with a hidden agenda. In the small hours of the night, this boozy gathering becomes a frenzy of savage insults, spiteful mind games and wicked humiliations. Arts South Australia

By the time the sun rises, all secrets will be laid bare, and none of them will ever be the same again. Edward Albee's electrifying masterpiece veers between reality and illusion, between hatred and desire. This play shouldn't be funny, but it is — caustic, spectacularly petty and brutal. Is this a portrait of a marriage in crisis, or the most sophisticated game of torture you've ever witnessed? Director Margaret Harvey delivers a fresh and unique vision of this classic in a captivating new production from State Theatre Company South Australia.

I acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal people, the traditional custodians of the land, waters and sky of where we are presenting this work to you. And I pay my deepest respect to all of their elders past and present. Margaret Harvey Director

As a First Nations woman of Saibai Island blood and English heritage, I cannot ignore the lens through which I view this work. Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a scalding vitriolic commentary on the state of America in the early 1960s. At times dark, there are also humorous moments. But what does this almost 60 year old play say about the time we’re living in now? By suggesting setting this story here on Australian soil what comes to fruition is the state of a nation — there is an alignment with the socio-politics that has permeated this nation state. We have these intersecting power dynamics that reframes the writer’s original themes of the work and re-interrogatesan audience’s perception of the work. Colour-conscious casting was at the forefront of my mind when breathing new life into Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. At the same time, race is just one aspect of every character’s identity, and is conveyed alongside other aspects like class, gender and age. I’ve simply chosen

to make race explicit rather than implicit through colour-conscious casting. Race is a social construct, that promotes social and political hierarchies and power relations. While we have insightful and ultra-talented BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) playwrights investigating and exploring themes around race politics and identity there is another layer to extract when we move race dynamics to the foreground in classics of the western canon, just by simply casting actors who are BIPOC. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is essentially about who’s afraid of living a life without false allusions. Australia is at a crossroads and the political paralysis that has gripped this country on issues of immigrants and asylum seekers, environment, sexual politics and Indigenous issues will not make it all go away, it is only exacerbating the historical untruths this country is built on. So who’s afraid of the truth? — Margaret Harvey

Edward Albee Writer Edward Albee became a force in the American theatrical scene in the late 1950s, writing short plays that not onlyusedexperimentallanguageand form, but also confronted sensitive cultural issues. Although his frank dialogue and provocative topics disturbed some critics, his body of work — which has been described as confrontational, uncompromising, controversial and elliptical — has expanded the landscape of American theatre. His continual exploration has influenced generations of theatre artists, and his perseverance has also been rewardedwithnumerouscriticalawards, includingthree Pulitzer Prizes for Drama (A Delicate Balance, 1966; Seascape, 1974; Three Tall Women, 1991), Tony awards for Best Play for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1963) and The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? (2002), the Kennedy CenterCommendationforLifetimeAchievement(1996) and the National Medal of Arts (1996). In 1959, his one-act play The Zoo Story made him a well-known playwright, first in Europe (the play premiered in Berlin) and then in America. Albee's ascendance to the top ranks of American theatre was further assured with the success of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), which was his first full-evening piece and also his Broadway debut (his other plays had been produced off-Broadway). The play adapted into a film directed by Mike Nichols in 1966, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Some of Albee's other significant works are The Death of Bessie Smith (1960), The Sandbox (1960), The American Dream (1961), Tiny Alice (1964), Box and Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung (1968), All Over (1971), The Lady from Dubuque (1980), Marriage Play (1987) and The Play About the Baby (1998). Edward Albee died in 2018 at the age of 88 and is remembered as one of the foremost playwrights of his generation.
