Synopsis The beloved Australian novel given delightful new stage life Young Storm Boy lives a simple yet free life on the coastal wilds of the South Australian Coorong, combing the beaches with his reclusive father, Hideaway Tom. During a long summer, he makes two friends who will shepherd him from childhood into adulthood: the jester Fingerbone Bill, who teaches him about his country; and Mr Percival, an orphaned pelican who prepares Storm Boy for the wider world with a poignant lesson about love, loss and letting go. This landmark new production of Colin Thiele’s cherished yet bittersweet comingof-age story brings together the creative forces behind Jasper Jones and The Wider Earth. It will touch the hearts of young and old with its masterful puppetry and boundless imagination.

‘ A beautiful work, with a deep emotional resonance, a masterful adaptation ideal for children just discovering this incredible story or those of us revisiting after many decades.’ – The Daily Telegraph

Endless Summer

Family Classic

After The Age declared the ecosystem of Coorong “dead” in 2006 hope is not lost - a bird boom in early 2016 suggests a path to recovery and reinforces the importance of Storm Boy’s message of sensitivity and conservation.

Welcome

Amanda Jolly Executive Director

Storm Boy is almost part of Australian mythology. Colin Thiele’s novel delighted the nation when it was published 55 years ago, and his

bittersweet tale of a youngster’s coming-of-age on the wild South

Australian coastline shaped the character of everyone who read it. Or perhaps your first encounter with this wide-eyed child and his pet pelican was in the cinema - either with the marvellous, award-winning 1976 feature film adaptation, or even this year’s remake. It’s a story that keeps moving and breathing, like a living thing and Tom Holloway’s wondrous stage adaptation is the latest incarnation. In our beautiful co-production with Melbourne Theatre Company, Sam has reunited the creative team behind the much-loved Jasper Jones. And who better to give form to Mr Percival the orphaned pelican, along with the other diverse wildlife, than our longtime collaborators and puppet geniuses, Dead Puppet Society, who made The Wider Earth an international sensation.

With Storm Boy we are also thrilled to be presenting a story for families to enjoy together. This show’s potential to introduce the next generation of theatregoers to the joy of live performance is formidable, and its poignant lessons about love, loss and letting go stay with us for a lifetime. We hope that some of the young people who enjoy this show will go on to participate in our extensive Education and Youth Programs which include our Young Artists’ Ensembles, our Young Playwrights’ Award, workshops, residencies, education resources and more. It remains for me to express heartfelt thanks to the sponsors for this production of Storm Boy, Griffith University and Ord Minnett, for helping to make it possible. I hope this show kindles - or rekindles - a sense of wonder in us all. Amanda

Director’s Note We all remember the first show that we saw, whether we were taken by our parents, our grandparents or a friend. I hope this version of Storm Boy will be that formative

theatrical experience that makes people fall in love with the stage for the rest of their lives. Sam Strong Director

Indeed, Storm Boy already occupies a cherished place in the hearts of so many Australians, whether they encountered it through Colin Thiele’s novella or the multiple film versions. It's a story that has captivated the imaginations of both young and old, drawing the child out of adults and speaking to the adults in children. Storm Boy depicts an archetypal human process of moving through grief. In the story, all of the characters are in flight from something. They are all wrestling with some sort of loss in their lives, and they all learn that loving something sometimes means letting it go. Tom Holloway’s adaptation subtly foregrounds this theme of caring for each other, as well as a more contemporary narrative of caring for our environment. Of course, the key relationships in the story are not only those between the people. Any version of Storm Boy depends – moves or doesn't move an audience – on the basis of the relationship between Storm Boy and the pelicans, especially Mr Percival. With this production we have been incredibly lucky to work with that wonderful Brisbane success story, Dead Puppet Society, with David Morton coming on board as Associate Director and Puppet Designer. One of the gifts of using puppetry is that you can bring the relationships to life in a way that is even more human and more affecting than if you were using real animals. Puppets (and especially their puppeteers) can interact with actors in a controlled and focused way that real animals can’t. At the very least they are a lot easier to work with and will upstage less than a live animal!

Part of the brief to the creative team was to bring the animals and the landscape of South Australia’s Coorong to life in a way that is uniquely theatrical. The design team leapt at this challenge, and have created a world that is at once epic and intimate, simultaneously cinematic and poetic. The Coorong is one of those rare places in our modern world where you can feel genuinely alone, and be genuinely dwarfed by nature, and these ideas have informed the spectacular design you’ll see tonight. As a director there are works where you focus on moving your audience, and there are works where you focus on delighting them. There are also some rare works where you're able to do both, sometimes on the turn of a dime. Jasper Jones was one of them and Storm Boy is another. They're the shows that particularly excite me as a director because they give you the capacity to both inspire and devastate an audience, to both break their hearts and mend them, at the same time. I hope the experience of watching Storm Boy is as beautiful for you as the experience of making it was for the team. Sam Strong
