The 2018 Season
a
A great season of theatre is like a great album. It is a series of unique experiences that, when put together, form a meaningful whole and take you on a journey. The journey across our nine in 2018 shows is deliberately varied, but unified by our desire to share the very best with Brisbane. You can see urgent new Australian stories, the finest new international plays, the hottest next generation of talent, and the country’s most outstanding artists. In reverse, we’re also taking the best of Brisbane to the rest of the state and country. We will world premiere a show in Cairns, tour 11 Queensland venues, take two shows to Melbourne, two to Sydney, one to Perth and another to Canberra. Queensland Theatre will be a national force like never before. Each of the plays in Season 2018 achieves what theatre does best – puts human experience under the microscope. We can see ourselves reeling with chaos in the workplace, enraptured in new romance, navigating the parent-child relationship, celebrating with family and wrestling with a failing marriage. First, a thank you. Thank you for so enthusiastically embracing the 2017 Season. Together we set a twentyyear record for Season Ticket Holders, played in more places, and shared theatre with more people than ever before. If 2017 was about taking the talents of Queensland to the rest of the country, 2018 sees us telling more stories from our wonderful home state. In May, one of the most dramatic sporting moments of all time will form the springboard for a new play about football, family and faith. In November, Ibsen’s classic heroine Hedda Gabler will splash down poolside in a new version set on the Gold Coast. Like all great theatre, the 2018 Season transports us to places we wouldn’t otherwise encounter (or even imagine). The eight plays traverse centuries of time, the breadth of our country, the expanse of the globe, and the inner workings of diverse and brilliant minds. In the coming year, you can be at the centre of a food fight at the Christmas dinner from Hell, evade pursuers across the Scottish highlands, wrestle with a Kafkaesque bureaucracy in Tehran, help solve a 1960s murder mystery in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, become entangled in a 17th Century scientific feud, or sing melancholy love songs to the exotic Duke of a mythical realm. All of this transportation will take place via the magic of theatre. And in 2018, our home venue will itself be the subject of a dramatic reveal. When it re-opens, the Bille Brown Studio will have been transformed – via a new stage, new seating and a new foyer – into the Bille Brown Theatre. Welcome to the 2018 Season. Sam

A razor sharp rom-com that blends Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner with Meet the Fockers Two politically powerful families at war. A son and daughter helplessly in love, defying their parents. You’ve heard this story before – but what if Romeo was white, Juliet was black and the war mainly fought on Twitter? After a whirlwind romance, hotshot lawyer Charlotte Gibson and penniless avant-garde cellist Francis Smith are engaged. One thing stands in the way: Charlotte’s the favourite daughter of Australia’s most charismatic Aboriginal politician, and Francis is the son of his dour and stridently conservative rival. It’s been mutual hatred for decades, sparked by an infamous shoethrowing incident on the floor of parliament. As the two bitterly entrenched families collide in the Gibson’s glitzy holiday mansion over an Aussie Christmas dinner, the long-standing feud comes to a head. Cue a sharp-witted and riotously funny struggle for dominance where barbed insults fly, secrets come flooding out and hypocrisies of all kinds – race, gender, religion, status – are mercilessly skewered. Black is the New White sold out its world premiere season at Sydney Theatre Company in 2017, a triumph for Queensland Theatre’s director Paige Rattray, writer Nakkiah Lui and designer Renée Mulder. Now it’s coming to Brisbane.

Tongue-in-cheek noir thrills as four actors deliver hundreds of characters and thousands of laughs A night at the theatre goes spectacularly wrong for dashing adventurer Richard Hannay, ending with a glamorous secret agent dead in his arms. Stiffening his upper lip, our handsome hero dives straight into a thrilling wartime conspiracy in this ripping laugh-a-minute romp. Classic film noir melds seamlessly with zany comedy as Hannay clings to trains, dangles from bridges and is harried across the moors by machine-gun fire – all recreated through fiendishly inventive stage wizardry. With just four actors playing a titanic cast of 139 characters, this riotous retro spy caper is performed at breakneck speed with a knowing wink to the audience and a tip of the hat to Alfred Hitchcock and Tony Hancock. After a record-breaking season at State Theatre Company South Australia, former Queensland Theatre Associate Director Jon Halpin returns to Brisbane to direct an all-Queensland cast including Hugh Parker and Leon Cain.
Scottish author John Buchan’s 1915 novel The Thirty-Nine Steps has spawned multiple film adaptations – most famously Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 version.

Washed ashore and separated from her twin brother, the plucky Viola must learn to survive alone in an exotic foreign country. Disguising herself as a man, she quickly becomes entangled in a web of amorous pursuits gone awry. As Cupid’s arrows send dukes and countesses running in disastrous directions, a wacky entourage of servants and drunken freeloaders watch on in amusement. All the while, Viola must fight to ensure nothing blows her cover. Shakespeare’s hilarious and lovable characters are brought to life through all new songs by legendary composer Tim Finn (Ladies in Black, Split Enz, Crowded House) and a cast of comedic greats including Jason Klarwein, Christen O’Leary and Jessica Tovey.

One football club, one family, and one unforgettable NRL grand final Where were you the night of the 2015 NRL Grand Final? The night when long-time underdogs the North Queensland Cowboys won in an all-QLD nail-biter that changed the game, and the state, forever. For one family of Cowboys diehards, their whole lives have led up to this moment. Jess was born on the night of the North Queensland Cowboys’ first game in Townsville. Daughter of Foley Shield legend Frank ‘Black Flash’ Wright, she grew up as a footy fanatic with big dreams, silky skills and boundless ambition to play. But as a girl in a male-dominated sport, she faces more than her fair share of knockbacks, just like the luckless Cowboys. Despite their relentless string of losses, Jess still dares to believe in her team, and herself. Queensland Theatre joins forces with debase productions and JUTE Theatre Company in Cairns to bring this iconically Queensland story to audiences across the state.
In the 2015 grand final, the Cowboys beat the Broncos 17-16 thanks to a Johnathan Thurston field goal in golden point. ‘Sport and theatre have so much in common and I love them both: their sense of drama and spectacle, of heroes and villains, and triumphs against the odds. The last few minutes of the 2015 NRL Grand Final is almost the perfect piece of storytelling’ – Sam Strong

Osamah Sami’s memoir Good Muslim Boy, upon which the play is based, won a 2016 New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award.
‘ G ood Muslim Boy stands out from the pack for its success in rendering the strange as familiar, and the familiar as deeply strange’ – The Australian
An irreverent but tender memoir of a father, a son and a question of faith What does it mean to be a good Muslim boy? You probably shouldn’t gawk at girls in bikinis or fake a medical degree. If you must be an actor, you shouldn’t play a gay man on television, or Saddam Hussein in a post 9/11 American musical. And you definitely, definitely shouldn’t leave an arranged bride at the altar. Meet Osamah Sami. He’s done all of the above. Interesting, considering his father is one of the leading Islamic clerics in Australia, having pulled his family out of war-torn Iran to settle in suburban Melbourne. But when his kindly and unorthodox dad dies suddenly during a trip to Iran, Osamah must grapple with an inscrutable and corrupt bureaucracy in his fight to bring his father’s body home to Australia – all the while looking back on his life in a haunting, hilarious and heart-wrenching retrospective.

True Story 13
The smash-hit stage adaptation of the classic Australian coming-of-age mystery In the sizzling summer of 1965, a bookish 14 year-old boy flees from the boredom and bullying of small-town life by burying himself in stories of epic adventure. He never thought he’d find himself living one. Charlie Bucktin lives in a tiny, insignificant bush town where nothing happens. Nothing, that is, until the town’s very own Huckleberry Finn – the light-fingered and dark-skinned Jasper Jones – stumbles upon a gruesome crime out by the dam. Who else would he call on for help but the sharpest kid around? A midnight tap at Charlie’s window sparks a race to solve a murder and clear Jasper’s name. Somewhere between Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and classic movie Stand by Me, Kate Mulvany’s adaptation of Craig Silvey’s novel is a bittersweet, joyous coming-of-age yarn set in a community where every weatherboard house hides a dark secret.
‘A corker’ – The Age
Sam Strong’s production of Jasper Jones sold out its Melbourne Theatre Company season and was nominated for four Helpmann awards including Best Play. Now Brisbane gets to see what all the fuss is about.

David Williamson meets Isaac Newton on the verge of his greatest scientific discovery Isaac Newton’s laws of motion are the foundation of countless human advancements. This is the story of how one of the greatest moments of scientific illumination almost didn’t happen. It’s 1684, the dawn of the Enlightenment. Bright young astronomer Edmund Halley must somehow wrangle the secrets of the universe from the brain of fickle and contrary Isaac Newton. At the same time he must wrestle with his faith and risk his home, family and reputation to find the money and means to share this beautiful, powerful theory with the world at large. For all the celestial bodies and scientific laws named after them, it’s easy to think of our 17th Century giants of science as infallible geniuses. But here are our most powerful minds laid bare: riddled with self-doubt, squabbling over fame, and ensconced in bitter intellectual rivalries. Beloved playwright David Williamson bring us a gripping and blackly funny drama about ideas that would change the world. The all-star cast includes Matthew Backer (Switzerland), William McInnes (SeaChange, Time of our Lives) and Rhys Muldoon (House Husbands).
‘ Isaac Newton was not a pleasant man’ – Stephen Hawking Edmund Halley is the namesake of Halley’s Comet. He realised that comets observed in 1531, 1607 and 1682 were in fact one comet passing the earth every 76 years.

Ibsen’s fiercest leading lady lands poolside on the Gold Coast Hedda Gabler is railing against her life. She didn’t marry bogan drug slinger George Tesman so she could play housewife in a monstrous Gold Coast mansion with white leather couches, blingy chandeliers and endless rounds of Aperol Spritz. She wants something much more. Now her old flame, Ejlert Løvborg, is out of prison and off the junk. Is he about to slice off a piece of George’s empire? Maybe Hedda can pull some strings to work this to her advantage. Logie Award-winning actor Danielle Cormack (Wentworth, Rake) is the Hedda we’ve all been waiting to see. Melissa Bubnic gives us a local version of the Henrik Ibsen classic that is as dangerous and surprising as its heroine.
The role of Hedda Gabler is considered the female acting equivalent of Hamlet.

Education and Youth Regional New Stories – New Artists Ways to Support
Collective experiences that change lives – on and off the stage ‘ Theatre companies too often think about the short term and the visible - the next season or the stars that might be in it. At Queensland Theatre we’re equally committed to our long-term investment in Australian culture - the development opportunities that will leave a legacy. Our Education and Youth Programs expose young people to the life changing magic of live theatre, including those whose circumstances make it difficult for them to participate. Our artist pathways initiatives help people make a life out of what they love, cultivating the careers of artists at all levels of experience, from all backgrounds. Great new art does not spring into life fully formed. It depends upon creating the environment from which it can emerge. Your support is what makes this work possible. We can’t lead from Queensland without you.’ Sam Strong Artistic Director

Education and Youth The future of theatre lives here Future audiences, future artists. All over Queensland. From youth ensembles in Brisbane and Logan, to curated writers groups, open masterclasses and artists in schools, we’re inspiring and motivating tomorrow’s leaders and providing safe spaces for self-expression. We’re investing in theatre education all over the state, providing drama teachers with specialised resources, hands-on support and artist-in-residence programs. The breadth, scale and innovation of our Education and Youth Programs is leading the way for other state theatre companies. For more information about Education and Youth Programs contact 07 3010 7600 or mail@queenslandtheatre.com.au

Regional
Queensland Theatre’s Torres Strait Island production My Name is Jimi toured Cairns, Brisbane and Thursday Island.
Theatre from our whole state, for the whole country In 2018 Queensland Theatre will commission or produce five plays featuring Queensland stories.
At Queensland Theatre we live up to our name. We’re telling stories from every corner of our state, and giving voice to all our cultures, especially our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We’re touring our work regionally and nationally, making sure our artists and their stories are known and applauded across Australia. Isaac Drandic, one of Australia’s leading Indigenous artists, has joined us as Resident Dramaturg. Based in Cairns, Isaac is helping discover new talent and develop regional stories. Regional students don’t miss out either. Our Education and Youth team bring together students and teachers from across regional Queensland to work with our artists and share their performances with each other. For more information about regional programs contact 07 3010 7600 or mail@queenslandtheatre.com.au

New Stories – New Artists New stories from new voices We want to create the next landmark work of Australian theatre, but this doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, resources and strong creative teams. That’s why we are supporting and welcoming assistant directors, resident artists, playwrights and independent artists into Queensland Theatre. We are a home for artists and new ideas, empowering practitioners to grow and tell the stories that define us. Assistant Directors – artists who have participated in this program and then directed for the Company include Jason Klarwein (My Name is Jimi, Much Ado about Nothing), Kat Henry (Constellations) and Travis Dowling (The Scene Project). Resident Artists – designers, directors, choreographers and other emerging theatre professionals receive mentorship and experience at Queensland Theatre.
Queensland Theatre works with over 100 independent artists each year, supporting their development and sharing resources.
Playwrights – Queensland Theatre works with more than 20 playwrights annually, assessing scripts, offering commissions, providing dramaturgical support and organising creative development readings. Independent Artists – our ground-breaking Independent Residency Program continues in 2018. A group of independent Queensland artists will receive support curated specifically to meet their needs.
For more information about artist development opportunities contact us on 07 3010 7600 or mail@queenslandtheatre.com.au
‘ Working with industry leaders, inside a professional theatre company, has been a turning point in my career. It’s the kind of opportunity all artists need but so few are given.’ Vilma Mattila Resident Designer

Sponsors Make it Possible From our long-term friend Philip Bacon ‘ Queensland Theatre is a place where some of Australia’s best artists passionately and intelligently explore the human experience. Philip Bacon Galleries does the same through the visual medium. It is no surprise that we share the values of excellence and altruism, and the mission of enriching lives through art. I am proud of our long-standing relationship, and can say that Queensland Theatre is the perfect partner for a business wishing to distinguish itself as an active contributor to the community.’
Queensland Theatre is experiencing an unprecedented period of growth and success We are breaking Season Ticket sales records and reaching more Australian cities and people than ever before. Our corporate partners are essential to ensuring we continue to deliver shows and community programs of the highest quality. In return, we offer our sponsors premium media exposure, the ultimate entertainment experience and an opportunity to fulfil the role of a good corporate citizen.

Play Briefings
For patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing, Auslan interpretation is scheduled for a selection of performances in 2018. Please let the Queensland Theatre Season Ticketing team know if this service is required at the time of booking. For more information email sales@queenslandtheatre.com.au or call 1800 355 528
If you want to know about the audition process for an actor, how a character was developed, or why that piece of music was chosen, consider booking the Night with the Artists performances on selected Monday evenings at 6:30pm. Following the show, the cast and creatives discuss the process with you.
Come and hear the cast and crew talk about the production you are about to experience. Play Briefings are held on the stage a few days before the first preview, so you often get a sneak peek at the set as well! The Briefings typically run for about an hour and are free. You’ll receive an email reminder before the date so you can let us know if you are attending.
