SEASON 2019 - Queensland Theatre

Page 1

A Season of Dreamers

welcome to 2019

A defining feature of a theatre season — and especially a Queensland Theatre season — is variety. No other medium can treat its audience to such a range of experiences across 12 months. 2019 at Queensland Theatre is a case in point. Between the book-ends of two of the greatest plays ever written, we have an exquisitely observed relationship portrait, a rock and roll road trip, an incendiary political battle cry, a heart-warming family classic, a wicked social comedy, and even a joyous new musical. This range extends to generational experiences too. In 2019 you can be part of the extreme passion that only teenage years can induce, the disillusion that can accompany the end of a working life, the idealism of young adulthood, the ebbs and flows of a long relationship, and the bittersweet passage from childhood to adulthood. Thanks to the genius of the shows, we can all recognise these things intimately, however near or far they are. If there is diversity across the eight shows, they are all tied together by the quality of artistry you have come to expect from Queensland Theatre. They are also unified by a spirit of optimism. Even if the stories occasionally break our hearts with tragic circumstances, they are all shot through with hope. This is a season full of dreamers, of people who confront even the darkest of times with a faith that life can be better.

On the topic of life being better, we’re thrilled that 2019 also marks the commencement of our principal partnership (the first in the Company’s history) with RACQ. Partnerships like this are only possible when two companies share a profound alignment of purpose. Both of us are about creating great experiences for Queenslanders. That’s something we’ve loved doing for nearly 50 years at Queensland Theatre. In 2019 we will start the celebrations for our milestone before programming an anniversary season for you in 2020. In the meantime, enjoy the next instalment. — Sam Strong Artistic Director

The requiem for the American Dream that defined the 20th Century As the death-rattle of American optimism echoes through the land of the Free Market, travelling salesman Willy Loman loses himself in the halcyon haze of the past. Once the king of the road, Willy is veering off it. Time was, he could sell anyone anything, and his reward was the whole package: wife, two sons, the car, the white picket fence. But now he’s feeling his years. He’s behind on the mortgage, he’s sidelined by his wet-behind-the-ears boss, and the final straw is when his adult son Biff – once a sporting prodigy, now a directionless disappointment – lands on the doorstep, further loosening Willy’s grip on the reality of his broken-down life. Arthur Miller’s towering classic is a timeless meditation on the human need to feel special, a withering commentary on capitalism, and a tragic portrait of a fallout between father and son. Directed by Jason Klarwein Set Designer Richard Roberts Associate Designer/Costume Designer Anthony Spinaze Lighting Designer Verity Hampson Composer/Sound Designer Justin Harrison Cast includes: Charles Allen (True West, Hoges: The Paul Hogan Story), Kevin Hides (Composing Venus, A Conversation), Peter Kowitz (Janet King, Crownies), Thomas Larkin (The Wider Earth, Macbeth), Jackson McGovern (The Owl and the Pussycat, Rent – The Musical), Angie Milliken (The Effect, Rake), Ilai Swindells (Redfern Now, Open Slather) Pictured Peter Kowitz

‘Arthur Miller’s masterful 1949 play is a work of such heightened theatricality, its language both raw and lyrical, that its characters need to live and breathe in our direct presence.’ – The Hollywood Reporter

The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. It’s gone on to win three more Tony Awards for Best Revival on Broadway.

Hydra By Sue Smith

The true love story of Charmian Clift, George Johnston and My Brother Jack They were writers, dreamers and free spirits. In the 1950s, Australian authors Charmian Clift and George Johnston fled halfway across the world to the idyllic Greek island of Hydra, determined to carve out a bohemian living as artists. As they revel in their picturesque community, far off the world’s literary map, inspiration for the great Australian work strikes. But a manyheaded monster of jealousy, infidelity, illness and alcoholism also rises from the crystal blue waters of their sun-kissed island home. Award-winning Sue Smith weaves the original writings of two of Australia’s literary icons into a moving relationship drama. She conjures the passion and intensity of the near mythical ‘King and Queen of Hydra’ as they follow their dream, only to end up in a Greek tragedy of their own making. Directed by Sam Strong Designer Vilma Mattila Lighting Designer Nigel Levings Cast includes: Anna McGahan (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Underbelly), Nathan O’Keefe (Alexandra’s Project, Balloon Man), Bryan Probets (The 39 Steps, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) Pictured Anna McGahan

‘Ask nothing of it and the soul retires, the flame of life flickers, burns lower, expires for want of air. Here, in the midst of all our difficulties, life burns high.’ – Charmian Clift While living on Hydra, George Johnston wrote his 1964 Miles Franklin Award-winning novel, My Brother Jack.

A rock’n’roll family reunion that will break your heart and fill it with songs Hitting the big time is tough when the only booking your kick-ass band can score is a pub gig. But the boisterous, bolshie Barbara and her rockers the Camp Dogs are in it for the long haul. When a family tragedy beckons, Barbara and her sister (and fellow muso) René set off on a long and winding motorbike adventure from Sydney, through Darwin, and finally to Katherine – where the bickering pair come face to face with some home truths. Part madcap buddy comedy, part electrifying rock gig, and part clarion call against the taint of inequality, this effervescent play with songs sold out its original season at Sydney’s Belvoir. Now it’s set to charm the pants off Brisbane. CITY OF GOLD By Meyne Wyatt

A battle cry from the front line of Australian identity All Breythe ever wanted was to be an actor, but this isn’t how he imagined his first big television gig – as a young Aboriginal man, being the face of a disastrous misfire of an advertisement that will get him roasted by his mob. When a messenger bird suddenly brings Breythe tragic tidings from his family, it spurs him on a journey of grief and duty. Returning home to Kalgoorlie, he is thrust headlong into family conflict and the reality of what it means to be an Indigenous youth in today’s Australia. Rising star Meyne Wyatt’s debut play is as riveting and unflinchingly honest as his stage presence. Urgent, wryly funny and politically incendiary, City of Gold is a call for change that will sound out for years to come. The beloved Australian novel given delightful new stage life Young Storm Boy lives a simple yet free life on the coastal wilds of the South Australian Coorong, combing the beaches with his reclusive father, Hideaway Tom. During a long summer, he makes two friends who will shepherd him from childhood into adulthood: the jester Fingerbone Bill, who teaches him about his country; and Mr Percival, an orphaned pelican who prepares Storm Boy for the wider world with a poignant lesson about love, loss and letting go. This landmark new production of Colin Thiele’s cherished yet bittersweet comingof-age story brings together the creative forces behind Jasper Jones and The Wider Earth. It will touch the hearts of young and old with its masterful puppetry and boundless imagination. Directed by Sam Strong Associate Director/Puppet Designer David Morton Designer Anna Cordingley Lighting Designer Matt Scott Composer & Sound Designer Darrin Verhagen AV Designer Justin Harrison Cast includes: John Batchelor (Sea Patrol, Red Dog), Tony Briggs (Black is the New White, The Sapphires), Emily Burton (The Wider Earth, The Seagull)

‘ A beautiful work, with a deep emotional resonance, a masterful adaptation ideal for children just discovering this incredible story or those of us revisiting after many decades.’ – The Daily Telegraph Presentation Sponsors

After The Age declared the ecosystem of Coorong “dead” in 2006 hope is not lost - a bird boom in early 2016 suggests a path to recovery and reinforces the importance of Storm Boy’s message of sensitivity and conservation.

A comedy that asks if good intentions are the ultimate crime of the middle class It’s a dream holiday for Aussie couple Meg and Rooster – a decadent getaway in Paris in a swanky Airbnb, with fine wine, lavish food, and best of all, no three year old twins in tow – a chance for these parents to look after themselves, kick back and reconnect. But when they pick up the keys from their departing hosts – an achingly cool, overachieving young French couple – all it takes is 15 minutes for the trip to be derailed. And when they crack open a mysterious package that arrives on the doorstep, it throws up the biggest ethical dilemma they’ve ever faced. Razor-sharp and whip-smart, this edgy new comedy marks the directorial debut of one Australia’s most accomplished storytellers, Joanna Murray-Smith.

Although pop fandom has since become more complex and more self-documenting (few Beatles fans had cameras), the tropes of Beatlemania have recurred in fan crazes from the Bay City Rollers to Bros, East 17 to One Direction: the screaming, the queuing, the waiting, the longing, the trophycollecting, the craving for even the briefest contact.

The epic argument rages on A great city has been torn apart by a civil war between two brothers. In the aftermath, both lie dead – one hailed as a hero and lying in state, the other condemned as a traitor and dumped in a carrion pile. From the ashes of their conflict rises a dystopian state under a new leader – a career politician who rose to power by dint of her ruthlessness. Grieving and heartbroken, their sister Antigone challenges the leader for the right to bury and mourn her dead brother with dignity, sparking a furious act of rebellion that will shake the city to its foundations. In this lyrical adaptation of Sophocles’ timeless tragedy, award-winning Brisbane playwright Merlynn Tong adds an urgent modern twist, reuniting Christen O’Leary and Jessica Tovey after their triumphant pairing in Twelfth Night.

help us leave a legacy

Legacy

As we approach our 50th anniversary we are asking ourselves about our legacy – what mark have we made, what have we enabled, how have we made our community a better place? Rather than answer that question ourselves, we decided to ask a range of our artists, colleagues and supporters what Queensland Theatre means to them - how have we changed their lives and what would they like us to do for the next 50 years? On the page overleaf you will be able to read their responses. When you do, I hope you feel the same pride I experienced, coupled with a renewed determination to make our Company even greater. It’s clear from these answers that a huge part of our legacy has been created behind-thescenes, over many years. Our Education and Youth Programs are having a lasting impact on the lives of young people throughout the State. So many artists have had their first breaks at Queensland Theatre - actors stepping onto the mainstage for the first time, playwrights developing new Australian plays supported by our dramaturgs, emerging directors and designers assisting leading industry professionals, and people in regional Queensland having their stories presented on our stages.

Your support is what makes this possible. So many of you have been part of this wonderful journey, right up until our most recent, concrete manifestation of our legacy – the creation of a new theatre for Brisbane, the Bille Brown Theatre, our own home venue. Thank you. I invite you all to choose an area to support and feel the thrill of leaving your personal legacy on the arts in Queensland. — Amanda Jolly Executive Director

Creating the right environment for artists to flourish and develop is vital for the arts in Queensland. Actor Penny Everingham has graced our stages for over two decades and we look forward to many more years to come. Support this area to create opportunities for artists from the start of their careers right through to the height of their powers.

Our audition-only Youth Ensembles lead Australia in actor training for young artists aged 12–18. Parker Newlan has received a scholarship to be part of this in-depth skills development program. Other young people across the state participate in many of our schoolbased programs. Make this your legacy area if you are interested in supporting the next generation.

We’re touring our work to regional Queensland, providing Education Programs to remote schools and working with local artists to tell the stories of their communities. Make this your legacy area and be part of ensuring that regional Queenslanders don’t miss out on the theatre experiences we all love.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Work Sharing stories like My Name is Jimi, An Octoroon, Black is the New White and Black Diggers, where actor Colin Smith had his big break, is a huge part of what makes Queensland Theatre unique. Contribute to this area if you’re interested in seeing the development of more of these outstanding stories.

New Stories Queensland Theatre is a thriving hub of activity when it comes to the development of new plays. Talented first-time playwright Hannah Belanszky was a finalist in our Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2018-19 and spent many hours working with dramaturgs and actors to hone her script. Donate to this area if you like the excitement of being there when a new work is coming to life.

Landmark Productions Troupes of actors. Technical innovation. Intricate set and costume design. So much goes into bringing world-class productions to the stage. Death of a Salesman calls for a large ensemble, while Storm Boy incorporates beautiful puppetry into the story telling. Supporting this area leaves a legacy of unforgettable productions.

Quick FAQs

What is a Season Ticket?

Can I exchange my tickets?

What is a Preview performance?

A Season Ticket is a package of 8, 6, 5 or 3 plays, when you book all your performances in advance. You can save up to 35% on Single Ticket prices. You can always exchange to a new date if something comes up. Season Ticket Holders get the first pick of the best seats.

Season Ticket Holders may exchange their tickets up to 48 hours prior to the ticketed performance. Go to queenslandtheatre.com.au/ exchanges and follow the steps to upload a picture of your ticket/s destroyed. Email sales@ queenslandtheatre.com.au, attach a picture of your ticket/s destroyed and tell us your new date. Post/In Person – mail or present your ticket/s to 78 Montague Rd, South Brisbane, QLD 4101. Exchange and upgrade fees may apply.

Previews are the performances prior to Opening Night. Actors may still be fine-tuning their performance, and on rare occasions the director may even interrupt the show to make technical or other adjustments. Previews can give you a fascinating insight into the process of theatre making.

What is a Fully Flex Package? It’s a type of subscription where you receive vouchers now and you can book your shows later, once you know your availability. Please note: there is a processing fee of $25 at the time of booking. Multiple passes cannot be used to book for the same play. We recommend you redeem your vouchers as early as you can as shows do sell out!

What is the policy on refunds? We follow ticketing guidelines set down by Live Performance Australia (LPA). Visit liveperformance.com.au for more information.

What discounts do we offer?

What if I miss a performance?

We offer Senior, Concession and 35 & Under. To see what discounts apply to you go to the booking form or see our website.

If you miss a booked performance or fail to get an exchange in on time, you can purchase a Season Ticket replacement at a special price of $30 (subject to availability).

Can I pay by instalment? You sure can. Choose our Post-pay option. Make life easier - book and pay nothing upfront. You will then be charged fortnightly over eight instalments (donations, fees and gift vouchers included in first instalment). Can I sit with friends? If you wish to sit with a friend you must submit your forms together.
