Welcome Note Wesley Enoch, Artistic Director Dear Patron, Supporter and Friends, When Bille Brown passed away almost 18 months ago we made sure he was never forgotten at Queensland Theatre Company. The theatre has his name attached to it, there are photos of Bille in the many shows he did at QTC hanging on the entrance walls and in the foyer hangs a magnificent portrait by artist Ben Quilty. One thing Bille was also well known for was his support of emerging talent and new work. As a writer and actor Bille Brown was a great advocate for developing great talent and as we move back to our home here at The GreenHouse you can experience some of the best new works and best new theatrical talents. I saw A Tribute of Sorts as part of La Boite Indie Season in 2012 and could see straight away the potential in this amazing ensemble of artists. Ben Schostakowski is a name to remember … seriously … he is an artist of the highest order

who will make a huge impact on theatre-making in this city. Combined with the awardwinning performing talents of Dash Kruck and Emily Burton, this is a hit show. This season at QTC represents a return and touring of a hit show. So often shows slink off into the memories of the few who get to see them. This year we had a chance to bring two shows, A Tribute of Sorts and The Magic Hour, back to life and show them to you again. The artists and the shows have a chance to grow and mature. A fantastic opportunity. These two shows are welcome additions to our work at the Bille Brown Studio at The GreenHouse. I’m sure Bille will be watching with eager eyes to see what happens next. Director's Note Benjamin Schostakowski Hello and welcome. Let's begin. One of A Tribute Of Sorts' original inspirations was Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies; an illustrated abecedarian book of infant deaths. Gorey has this incredible talent for making incidents like a 'fatal assault by bears' beautiful and hilarious. I found a considerable amount of theatrical potential in his ideas. Rather than stage the book, we imagined some awkwardly endearing characters and through their mindset developed our own homage to unfortunate children. This is the story of Ivan and Juniper and their tribute. Our premise smashes two distinctive worlds together: one of macabre incidences of short-lived innocence and one of glitterspangled showiness. These worlds seem rather contrary which is exactly why we ran with them. Dash, Emily and I have had the incredible joy of creating this production from the ground up. We spent a significant amount of time investigating how Gorey constructed his humour, we dove into the world of vaudeville, of what

good and bad performing looks like and everything in between. On the road to creating this work we were inspired by a whole bunch of artists - Edward Gorey, Hillarie Belloc, Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, Lally Katz, Post, Gregory Crewdson, Roald Dahl and The Tigerlillys to name a few. We researched self-taught magicians, homemade dance routines, child actors and our own predilection to shameless theatrics. In February 2012 we had the opportunity to test the ideas of the show at Brisbane Powerhouse's World Theatre Festival. Our scratch showing, A Spectacular Of Sorts, provided us a chance to test the aesthetic and the themes of the show with audiences. The responses were delightfully encouraging and so we pushed forward into two more creative developments to complete the work. Needless to say, we had an outrageous amount of fun working on this production. It was an honour to premiere this show in La Boite's Roundhouse Theatre through their Indie program in 2012. And it's more exciting again to

be able to remount the show with Queensland Theatre Company and share it with new audiences. This work owes sincere thanks to a long list of people who lovingly helped us bring it all together, and especially to you, our audience - thank you for coming along to experience the show. Our story starts in a small theatre or maybe a living room. Our story lies in the hands of Ivan and Juniper Plank they're new to the idea of live performance, but that isn't to say they haven't rehearsed - a lot. Tonight is the night they present their tribute to unfortunate infants. I hope you enjoy. Benjamin.

Synopsis

Ivan and Juniper have a peculiar task. Over the course of one night, these teenage cousins must re-enact a list of alphabetically ordered, but altogether unfortunate, events. With lo-fi charm and eisteddfod zest, each incident is luridly reimagined becoming more outrageous and elaborate as the night progresses. Beneath the shameless theatrics and melancholic gaud of their recreations, something unexpected is happening between Ivan and Juniper. A wickedly funny and absurd jaunt of old-world magic and intrigue - it’s a tribute of sorts ...

Biographies Benjamin Schostakowski

Benjamin graduated from directing at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 2013. He directed and wrote A Tribute of Sorts for La Boite Indie (2012), winner of four Matilda Awards (including Best Independent Production and Best New Australian Work). In 2011, Benjamin was appointed an Associate Artist with Queensland Theatre Company.

Dann Barber DESIGNER

Dann is currently in his third and final year of a Bachelor of Dramatic Art (Design) at NIDA. Prior to this Dann received a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University with a major in drawing. This culminated with his major work being shown in the NotFair Primal Mutation exhibition at Thousand Pound Bend in 2012 and again in the 2013 group show Black and White at Blockprojects, both in the Melbourne CBD. Whilst studying Fine Arts, Dann co-founded a fringe theatre company, What Just Happened, performing Features of Blown Youth (2009) and The Logue Of PT Lawrence (2010) at the Arts Centre in Melbourne. Last year Dann co-designed the set and costumes for Benjamin Schostakowski’s new work Klutz and co-production designed Willow’s music video No Sound for Triple J/Rage. Dann is currently designing the set and costumes for The False Servant at NIDA. Later this year he will complete his NIDA studies by designing the set for a new production of The Light in the Piazza.

Pete Foley

ANIMATION

Pete is an animator, illustrator and motion designer. His distinct point of view holds references to Art Deco, minimalism, mythology and modernism. He likes hard lines, silhouettes and angles. His first film was released in 2005 when he created a stylised and bold animated short, commissioned by Creative Commons. It was translated into seven languages and continues to be shown in conferences around the world. This collaboration with musician Chris Perren gave birth to their indie film duo Black brow. In April 2012, working with Paddington motion graphics house IV Motion, they released their first iPhone game; Penny Time, to rave reviews. Pete’s roles were art direction, character design, character animation and concept. Pete animated Sam Tupou’s artwork for the mid-lake performance of Polytoxic’s internationally touring Trade Winds. He designed the entirely projected sets for The Violent Romantics’ play My Struggle (The Life and Times of an Individ in a World Full of Hipsters) (Anywhere Theatre Festival) and most recently co-directed and co-designed Maxine Mellor’s Trollop with Wesley Enoch, David Morton and Ben Hughes (Queensland Theatre Company). Pete was humbled to receive the 2012 Groundling for Outstanding Contribution to Multimedia Design. Pete completed a Bachelor of Animation at the Queensland College of Art.

JUNIPER PLANK

Emily graduated from University of Southern Queensland (USQ) in 2010 and has since been a part of a number of independent theatre projects, including the multi-award winning 2012 production of A Tribute of Sorts in which she played the role of Juniper. For this role Emily won the 2012 Matilda Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Emily proudly makes up one third of the independent theatre collective All Together Now having debuted their first new work Life ETC. last year, and this year presented Will Eno’s Oh The Humanity as part of the Empire Theatre’s Homegrown Season in Toowoomba. Emily is currently one of the lead actors for The Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe and is also working with Mixtape Theatre Collective on their new work, Bad Friend. She recently co-directed with David Burton and Kate Murphy this year’s USQ Shakespeare in the Park production of The Winter’s Tale. Other work outside of performance includes teaching acting and drama workshops. 8

As a vocalist, Dash performs regularly at cabarets and jazz venues. Dash also works regularly as an acting instructor and director for organisations such as NIDA, QUT, The New York Film Academy and The Actors Conservatory. He is a graduate of QUT. Dash is a proud member of equity.

One hundred years ago, in 1914, a bullet from an assassin’s gun in Sarajevo sparked a war that ignited the globe. Patriotic young men all over the world lined up to join the fight – including hundreds of Indigenous Australians. Shunned and downtrodden in their own country – and in fact banned by their own government from serving in the military – Aboriginal men

War I Indigenous Diggers heroes’ welcome – just a shrug, and a return to drudgery and oppression.

Black Diggers is the story of these men – a story of honour and sacrifice that has been covered up and almost forgotten. Directed by Wesley Enoch and written by Tom Wright, Black Diggers is the culmination of painstaking research into the lives and deaths of the thousand or so Indigenous

soldiers who fought for the British Commonwealth in World War I. Grand in scale and scope, it draws from in-depth interviews with the families of black diggers who heard the call to arms from all over Australia, as well as conversations with veterans, historians and academics. For the Queensland Theatre Company, it has been a privilege to bring the important stories of these men onto the stage in the year of the ANZAC Centenary.

About Monsters Appear Monsters Appear craft contemporary theatre works that meld character-driven story with visual stage imagery, old-world artifice and design activation. We endeavour to captivate modern audiences with unique stories that are intricate,

intimate and immersive. We create works that celebrate theatricality, creative imagination and the darker side of humour. Monsters Appear have presented work through Metro Arts, Brisbane Powerhouse and La Boite Theatre Company.

Works to date include The Glorious Nosebleed, Beverly is Dead, A Spectacular Of Sorts (work-in-progress showing) and A Tribute of Sorts. The company works with artists on a project-by-project basis and is directed by Benjamin Schostakowski.

To ensure that patrons enjoy the performance, management asks you to note: • Cameras, tape recorders and paging devices should not be used inside the auditorium. • Switch off alarms and mobile phones prior to the performance. • A single cough measures approximately 65 decibels of sound. The use of a handkerchief helps greatly to soften the sound. The management reserves the right to refuse admission, also to make any alterations to the cast which may be rendered necessary by illness or other unavoidable causes. Patrons are advised that the Bille Brown Studio has EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES, a FIRE ALARM system and EXIT passageways. In case of an alert, patrons should remain calm, look for the closest EXIT sign in GREEN, listen to and comply with directions given by the inhouse trained attendants and move in an orderly fashion to outside the Studio.

Improvisation and Clowning with Louise Brehmer Acting Skills: Finding a Character Acting Skills: Using Your Voice Physical Theatre and Movement Auditions and Monologues

Young Writers Group Interested high school aged young writers will participate in a fivesession workshop program, working with playwrights including David Burton and Elaine Acworth and industry professionals to learn and develop their craft. By the end of the five-sessions, the participants will have completed a range of writing-for-theatre tasks and will have a collection of their own written pieces to include in their portfolio.
