Welcome Note Artistic Director
SAM STRONG Dear QTC Audience, This is an unusual welcome for me. At the time I write this, I haven’t seen a performance of Bastard Territory or Motherland. Indeed, I won’t see either show until an audience does. This is because both are pre-existing pieces that had seasons elsewhere before being programmed by my predecessor. As an exacting Artistic Director, presenting a work you have never seen is an unnerving proposition. As an audience member, it is precisely as it should be. One of the most wonderful experiences you can have in a theatre is seeing a new story unfold in front of you for the first time. The moment when the lights go down at the start of a new play has a pregnant expectation quite distinct from the moment when the lights go down on a play you already know. It’s this freshness – this immediacy – that keeps us coming back to new stories, and why the creation of new work is at the centre of what we do at QTC.
L-R: Benhur Helwend, Lauren Jackson, Peter Norton in Bastard Territory.
Of course, Bastard Territory and Motherland are not strictly brand new stories. Both of these plays have had very successful seasons already. Bastard Territory was a revelation for Darwin and Cairns audiences when it premiered in 2014, selling out multiple shows. Motherland had a critically acclaimed premier season at Metro Arts in 2013. QTC reviving these plays gives a wider Brisbane audience the chance to experience them. It also embodies the vital role QTC plays in Queensland Theatre’s ecology. You will already have heard me talk about our interest in cultivating the career pathways of artists. These revivals attend to the development pathways of works, letting them evolve, grow and deepen across multiple incarnations. The result is that our experience as an audience is refined and intensified along with the shows. I look forward to going on the journey of Bastard Territory and Motherland with you. See you as the house lights go down on both shows. Sam

Director’s Note IAN LAWSON “Life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going.” – TENNESSEE WILLIAMS
At once a sweeping family saga and an astute observation of Australia’s social-political history, Bastard Territory spans time periods, countries and realities. Yet it is grounded in the simple need of a man for answers that make sense of his past, affirm his present and enable a future. Riddled with personal fault lines that overlap and combine to form a fragile crust, Russell must endure and embrace the seismic shifts that are unleased upon him if he is to catch his chance at finding truth. I have been very fortunate to help develop and direct a number of Stephen’s plays over the years that have been keenly based in real locations with unresolved histories. Stephen uses these locations as antagonists; paralleling and amplifying the protagonist’s struggles, while bringing a scale to his stories that provided breath-taking perspective. It makes for theatre that is both intimate and grand. Bastard Territory is no different; in fact, it is one of his finest works, if not his finest. Combining his idiosyncratic and flawed characters, complex plotting and thematic adventure with unapologetically theatrical grandeur (magic even), Stephen has created something very special – I think Tennessee Williams would approve.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank JUTE and Browns Mart for championing Bastard Territory and new work in general. Without a commitment to telling stories from our own backyard, Australia’s cultural life would be much the poorer and our theatre largely irrelevant. It is a rare event in theatre to get a second opportunity to work on a piece such as this. My thanks go out to a superbly talented cast who have been so generous during the short rehearsal period, embracing the chance to dig deeper and re-imagine rather than just remount. Finally, thank you to the team who breathed life into the world of this wonderful play. I hope it sweeps you up, up and away.

Director's Note CAROLINE DUNPHY In 2013 Motherland was a newly written script, which Katherine Lyall-Watson was in the process of redrafting when she first asked me to read it. The lives of three real women (one Australian and two Russians) and their search to find a place for themselves in a tumultuous world sparked my initial interest in this monumental piece. The play’s events, which span the twentieth century, three continents, World War II, the Russian Revolution and Queensland’s Fitzgerald Inquiry, were brilliantly overwhelming and posed a great staging challenge that fuelled me as a director.
L-R: Peter Cossar, Daniel Murphy.
I came up for air and was immediately immersed in our collaborative world with a fine team of local actors to work into the depths of Motherland's core. It’s a rare and special experience to hear the voices of five mature actors on stage. Bringing Motherland's extraordinary women out of the shadows of history and interweaving their stories needed great care and precision. Working closely together with a sensitive design team allowed us to explore the nuances of movement, sound, light and contemporary design to build the epic world and allow the rich and muscular writing to transport the audience. I’m thrilled that Motherland continues to resonate on many levels and that these women’s intimate stories stand the test of time with courage and integrity. L-R: Kerith Atkinson, Peter Cossar.

Q&A with Motherland author
KATHERINE LYALL-WATSON How did you come to be involved in the Motherland story?
How did you decide what leads in the research to follow in order to create the story?
I'd just finished the Queensland Premier's Drama Award reading for my play Tinder and ThreeSisters Productions had come to see it. They approached me to see if I'd be interested in writing a play for them and introduced me to Elena Volkova, a Russian researcher who had come to them with the idea for a play about Nell Tritton. I was hooked from the moment I first heard about Nell and Kerensky!
That was really tricky! Basically, I followed the leads that excited me. There were so many directions I could have taken (and so many early drafts following various threads that turned into dead ends) - for instance, Nell had another marriage before Kerensky. She was married to a Russian opera singer who was apparently a womaniser and alcoholic. I loved writing him and had a lot of fun in their scenes, but in the end I had to make the hard choice to cut him from the play as his scenes with Nell didn't advance the story (they were a fascinating detour but if I'd kept going with all the fascinating detours I'd have ended up with a seven hour play! - or a mini series!)
A lot of facts for the story were gathered from Elena Volkova, also known as Alyona. Were you able to meet with any other decedents of the original characters who could provide further information? I met with a nephew of Nell's, but he had only met her a couple of times when he was a boy and he wasn't able to tell me much about her or Kerensky. Interestingly, neither Nell nor Nina had any children, so their lines stopped with them. Elena was my main source of living information and I loved finding out about her fascinating life. As soon as I met her, I knew she had to be part of the play and I was so grateful when she agreed to have Alyona modelled on her.
Did you find it hard to draw the line on the research and story? Absolutely! I kept finding out new things that I wanted to include, but there's a point where you have to stop and use what you have rather than keeping on researching. There's a lot of information that I found out after I'd drawn that line which would have made Motherland a very different play. It's why I now call it a work of historical fiction based on fact.
Are there any other interesting facts that you discovered while doing the research for Motherland? Nell went to Somerville House. Her name was Lydia Ellen Tritton and she changed it to NellĂŠ, I think because she wanted to be more exotic. She later dropped the last e and changed it to Nell but also went by the name Therese while she was overseas. It was hard tracking her as she used so many different names. She also published a terrible book of poems when she was still young - but I imagine if any of us looked at the sorts of poems we wrote in our teens, we'd cringe at their sentimentality. Her family owned the Tritton Furniture Emporium and were very wealthy. She danced with the Prince of Wales at Cloudland but was smitten with all things Russian. I think she found herself when she travelled overseas and was free of the constraints that were naturally present in Brisbane in the 1920s.

About Ellen Belloo Ellen Belloo was formed in 2013 to create new Australian work that combines text and contemporary performance. Their philosophy is to bring people, stories and talent ‘out of the shadows’. Ellen Belloo aims to find new ways of exploring text and space via the medium of the human body and to create contemporary performance with heart and muscle. The company comprises four women with decades of experience in theatre, film, and writing: Caroline Dunphy (director and performer); Katherine Lyall-Watson (writer); Kathryn Kelly (dramaturg); and Danielle Shankey (producer). Ellen Belloo’s first work was Motherland, premiering at Metro Arts in 2013. Their new work Hanako premieres at the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2016. Two further works, The Gloaming, and The Blue Boat, are currently in development. For more information on Ellen Belloo and to see other work developed by the company, visit www.belloocreative.com
