Queensland Theatre acknowledges the Jagera and Turrbal people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, and their unique relationship with the lands, seas and waterways. We pay our respects to their Elders both past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Afghanistan 2011. Our Australian soldiers. Their story.

Queensland Theatre is immensely proud to present the world premiere of Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Johnston’s remarkable play, First Casualty, drawn from his experiences, and those of his friends, as they served in Afghanistan. It is a play that our Artistic Director, Lee Lewis, has championed since she first read it as a judge for the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award in 2016 and we are now the beneficiaries of her tenacity, belief and skill.

The war in Afghanistan is hard to picture, unless you’ve served. Christopher gives us the rare opportunity to better understand the experience of serving soldiers, spanning the entire gamut of scenarios they might face - from the boredom of outpost life, to the culturally complex interactions with local warlords, and the adrenaline of a chaotic firefight and constant vigilance. But always, it comes back to their humanity, their mateship, and their personal struggles.

Many of us will know someone who served, but will not be fully aware of the challenges they faced and their impact.

This production would not have been possible without the invaluable support of our production partners, BDO and Board Matters and our Landmark Productions Fund donors, whose support allows us to develop and present important works of scale each season. We also acknowledge the guidance offered to us by Legacy Brisbane, which does so much to support the families of the soldiers who never returned from Afghanistan.

As well as being a gripping story, this play has so much: relatable characters, danger, humour, camaraderie, empathy and insight. I hope you enjoy it, are moved by it, and continue to think about it for a long time to come.

FIRST CASUALTY

Welcome to the remote Combat Outpost Mirage, home to eight Aussie Diggers mired in our longest war. From this tiny fortification overlooking a beautiful valley in the forbidding mountains of Afghanistan's Uruzgan province, Captain Trent Kelly and his men have a lot to deal with. When they aren't mentoring a platoon from the Afghan National Army, they're patrolling for Taliban insurgents, negotiating with a powerful local warlord, or simply making it through another day a long way from home.

Written by a serving soldier and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, First Casualty is a debut play like no other. It's an authentic account of the real lives of Australian troops at war — the triumphs and the tragedies, the strains and the sacrifices, the pressure and the release. There's tension, occasional explosions of violence, and humour, but at its heart First Casualty is about the friendship of the soldiers who have given up so much for their country.

This is not an anti-war story. This is not a pro-war story. This is a story of soldiers — the sons, the husbands, the fathers, the people we love.

On my first deployment to Iraq I was stationed next to an extraordinary archaeological ruin. The Sumerian city of Ur, birthplace of Abraham, was buried on the outskirts of our desert airbase. After monsoon rain ancient artefacts would emerge from the terracotta mud. Ceramic and bronze remnants, cuneiform carved into stone. The first writing.

Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan was also reminiscent of the Old Testament. Some 25,000 Australians served there between 2006 – 2014. I was there in May 2011, at the height of violence and the surge, when Bin Laden was killed and coalition forces began to draw down on a timeline. From that point onwards we fought in a no-mans land between ends and means. Our campaign became monumentally insubstantial, full of sound and fury, evanescent like a dream.

My play is set at this moment — the apogee of our commitment — when the conflict began spilling and shifting. Two days over two acts on Combat Outpost Mirage echo with two decades; and now those decades of blood and treasure are slipping back into sand. Soon there will be no trace left of our presence. Just stories, through a glass darkly.

In Bandung a Kopassus blacksmith still forges the ancient Javanese curved dagger called a kris. At his crucible he marshals all the elements, pounding the blade layer upon layer, tempering the steel with nickel from a meteorite. The finished weapon has jiwa: fire, soul, the restless energy of a dark star; life and death in its form. This kris and other artworks are on display in the Bille Brown foyer.

First Casualty took a lifetime to write. My family instilled a love of learning and the arts. The Jesuits gave me a classical education. Duntroon was a masterclass in character. Formidable soldiers reviewed the script for me, then defended it from others. Amanda Jolly, Elizabeth Jameson and QT; Max Lambert, David Williamson, Karen Rodgers and Sydney’s Griffin Theatre Company lit a path to the main stage. But the hero of this journey is director Lee Lewis. Paratroopers are trained to

jump by night, heavy with equipment; the wind-rushing blackness made light by courage and conviction. Lee Lewis radiates these qualities. She is the play’s champion and chalk leader. I can’t wait for her to bring this story home.

First Casualty is not a documentary or official history. It is fiction; imagined away from reality to seek out and close with something more elusive.

The Army has never been more remote from most Australians. Trust is eroding on both sides, though one can’t survive without the other. I wrote the play for my friends and family, to experience among our community; to bridge the distance between caste and country. If it falls short the fault is mine alone.

First Casualty is an elegy, a play within a play. An artefact emerging from the mud. Perhaps the writing will survive.

For the fallen.

Christopher Johnston, Lee Lewis

... the Australian public's need to understand our military involvement in Afghanistan has never been greater.

It’s been seven years since I first read Christopher Johnston’s play in the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award shortlist. The world has changed a lot in that time, but the urgency, the purpose and the integrity inside First Casualty have never waned. The voices of Australian soldiers in this story have grown stronger and clearer and braver, the complexity of the circumstances they were caught in has grown more nuanced, and the Australian public's need to understand our military involvement in Afghanistan has never been greater.

Bringing this new work to the stage over the years has involved support from battalions! Griffin Theatre and Playwriting Australia, many meals and cups of tea with generous people who offered cultural, musical, dramaturgical, and language insights, the extraordinary leap of imaginative faith made by the Landmark Production Fund donors, enthusiastic sponsorship by BDO and Board Matters, the knowledge of many many soldiers, the permission of the Army, the talent of so many actors in developments, and finally the crazy passionate commitment of the creative

team who gathered to make the production you see tonight — 12 actors, 12 creatives and the might of the entire Queensland Theatre production team — all deployed to tell this story.

As I wonder at the journey Christopher and I have gone on, I think back to my first reading of the script when I heard in his writing voices and ideas I had never seen on the Australian stage before. The chance to bring this soldier’s words to life so that we as a community can start to talk better about our involvement in the war in Afghanistan is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Rarely does fiction in the theatre matter so much to so many people. This play does not pretend to be definitive: it offers few answers but raises many questions. I look forward to the conversations it invites.

Sophocles was a general and a playwright. The combination is rare. And valuable. Not only in the time he lived in but for future generations. Around the world. Thank you Christopher, for your military service obviously, but for your artistic courage.

— Lee

Ahead of the official start of rehearsals for First Casualty, the core cast went out on a three-day bootcamp with Australian veterans to get them ready to accurately portray ADF soldiers on the stage. The training program downloaded an enormous amount of information to the actors, including detail focused tasks like proper gun control, how to wear the uniform, and the process of going out on patrols.

Our second landmark production of the year, First Casualty, is making its world premiere thanks to the generosity and support of our Visionaries family and the Landmark Productions Fund. With the help of all our supporters, we’ve been able to fulfil our shared vision to develop and present significant works of scale for Queensland audiences. We look to 2023 with great anticipation for our next landmark production, Vietgone by Qui Nguyen, directed by powerhouse duo Daniel Evans and Ngoc Phan, to be presented at the Playhouse, QPAC in November.

Together we are making our ambitions a reality

FROM OUR PRODUCTION PARTNER

Board Matters is very proud and excited to support Queensland Theatre. It’s never been more important to support a vibrant performing arts community in Queensland. The arts make us think, feel and understand whilst giving us insight into who we are or who we could be, as an individual and as a community.

For over 20 years, Board Matters have been helping boards and organisations understand who they are and who they could be with our industry-leading corporate governance solutions.

We are a team of specialists practised in the art of directorship for better organisational performance. Getting the right cast around the board table is a great start. But getting them working from the same script demands great skill. We are deeply experienced, practicing directors ourselves, and know the challenges of the board room, first-hand.

Intent on creating value for every single client we work with, we deliver solutions as bespoke and as unique as you are.

Enjoy the performance!
