Welcome Note Artistic Director
SAM STRONG Dear QTC audience, The other day I popped into rehearsal for Jason Klarwein's production of Much Ado About Nothing. It was only the second week, but already I could sense what a delightful night of theatre it was going to be. Shakespeare's play is, of course, a great place to start. Much Ado typifies what people love about Shakespearean comedy - the delicious wordplay, the wonderfully memorable characters and the utter command of classic devices like the overheard conversation. In its complex depiction of Beatrice and Benedick, Much Ado sets the template for the generations of romantic comedies that followed. Even more than that, like many of Shakespeare's comedies, Much Ado is not afraid to plunge us into darkness before we reach the resolution of the end. Most importantly of all, what I glimpsed in the rehearsal room was a talented team not just realising, but breathing new life into Shakespeare's comedy. I think bringing an audience another version of a Shakespeare play obliges you to match the theatrical imagination of the source and stage Shakespeare’s work with an audacity and flair that would make him proud. What I saw in rehearsal was well on the way to doing that. And if what turns up on stage is anywhere near as fun as that rehearsal, you are in for a rare treat indeed. Looking forward to seeing you there. Sam.
shakespeare400 #Shakespeare400
23 April 2016, the first Preview night of our production of Much Ado About Nothing, marks the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 1616. Shakespeare400 celebrates his 400-year legacy to western literature, performing arts, language and culture. Globally throughout 2016, theatre companies, cultural organisations, creatives, academics, fanatics and more are paying homage to the bard through a program of performances and exhibitions. Queensland Theatre Company is proud to join the worldwide festivities with this staging of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedy. We invite you to #Shakespeare400 to celebrate our production of Much Ado About Nothing.

DIRECTOR`S Note Director
JASON KLARWEIN Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare's great comedies. It's a delightful look at the battle of the sexes and the freedom of individuals. The common perception of the play is that it is a frivolous, silly comedy that is really all about ‘nothing’, but on closer inspection, this is not the case. In the late 1500s it was very fashionable for writers to vie for audiences by using catchy but disposable titles for their plays, perhaps as a reaction to the solid but unimaginative self-titled works such as Richard the Third and Henry the Sixth. Plays such as Too Good To Be True and Better Late Than Never have not survived the decay of time, but Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing has. ‘Nothing’ according to scholars of Shakespeare and the etymology of the English language, (of which I do not claim to be one), believe that the words ‘nothing’ and ‘noting’ may have sounded exactly the same out of the Elizabethan mouth. Therefore sometimes the title is referred to as Much Ado About Noting. ‘Noting’ as in - observing, paying particular attention to, and bearing in mind. Whereas the word ‘nothing’ is a deeply profound and paradoxical philosophical question. What is ‘nothing’? Even theoretical physicists would have a hard time exploring that question. Later in his career Shakespeare would turn his mind to the concept of ‘nothing’ in the great tragedy, King Lear. But you will not be seeing that play tonight and the Queensland Theatre Company have set me a word limit, so move your eye to the next paragraph, dear reader.
Much Ado About Nothing is really Much Ado About Being Human. It takes a brutal, albeit funny, look at how men (in all their forms) treat women. And how women (in all their forms) treat men. On the surface of this production you will find lush tropical sunsets in which characters sip cocktails and indulge in witty banter, but underneath something far more profound is occurring. Emancipation and equality. For me, one of the great lines in this play (and there are many) comes from Beatrice’s frustration in not being able to take action and right an injustice perpetrated by a man, “Is he not approved in the height of a villain, that hath slandered, scorned, dishonoured my kinswoman. Oh, that I were a man … Oh god, that I were a man! I would eat his heart in the market place!” Her frustration at the childlike whimsies of the privileged men in the play really does form the basis for great comedy and some very touching, honest moments of human vulnerability. This play is a beautifully controlled sensual look at love and lust. What people will do to get it and what people will do to avoid it. And what society deems should be done with love. What small tight boxes and titles love must fit into to be ‘legitimate’ in the eyes of a majority. And how love, which Juliet says, “… is as boundless as the sea”, could possibly fit into the restrictive timeframes and rules set down in books. As Benedick says, “Man is a giddy thing.” Enjoy, Jason Klarwein
who's who in much ado? “Much Ado About Nothing is really much ado about human nature. It takes a brutal, albeit funny, look at how men treat women. On the surface of this production you will find lush tropical sunsets in which characters sip cocktails and indulge in witty banter but underneath something far more profound is occurring. Emancipation and equality. Jason Klarwein (Director)
Play Synopsis Act I
Act IV
The play opens with a party to celebrate a group of returned sailors. It doesn't take long before witty and playful banter becomes the focus. As Claudio confesses a love of Hero, we see Benedick claim he will remain a bachelor for life, clearly evident in his cunning word battles with Beatrice who also seems convinced to stay single. Don Pedro and Claudio hatch a plan to woo Hero during that evening’s revelry, whilst Don John and Borachio hatch a plan to counteract it.
The wedding of Claudio and Hero is interrupted due to Claudio’s accusations. More planning and scheming unfolds, this time by Leonato, Dogberry and Benedick, in an attempt to restore Hero’s honour. Benedict consoles Beatrice and they unwilling declare that they might love each other, but the conversation quickly turns to thoughts of revenge against Claudio for shaming Hero. Borachio is interrogated, and reveals his crimes.
Act II
Leonato assists in revealing to Don Pedro and Claudio that they have been tricked by Don John, and compels Claudio to come to his house the following day. At Leonato’s house all of the scheming and plotting is revealed and Benedict and Beatrice publicly, albeit reluctantly, reveal their love for each other.
Leonato and Beatrice gather before the party and instruct Hero what to do if a man tries to woo her. At the party, Don Pedro dances with Hero and begins to flirt with her. Don Pedro courts and wins Hero for Claudio. The marriage of Claudio and Hero is supported by all parties. Don Pedro enlists the help of Leonato, Claudio and Hero to trick Beatrice and Benedick into falling in love with each other. Don John and Borachio devise another scheme to interfere with the marriage of Hero and Claudio.
Act V
Act III The morning after the party, Benedick is led to believe that Beatrice loves him. Hero, with the help of Margaret, tricks Beatrice into believing that Benedick loves her. Later that evening Don John enacts his plan and convinces Don Pedro and Claudio that Hero is unfaithful. Dogberry and Verges patrolling the evening streets overhear Don John and Borachio talking about the success of their plan and arrest Borachio whilst Don John flees.

YOU HELP US BRING THE WORDS OFF THE PAGE Ladies in Black. The Secret River. Black Diggers. Each of these works began as an idea, as words on a page. Ideas come to nothing without time and support. QTC believes Australian playwrights can create the next generation of theatre classics, and is committed to developing and programming their work. These courageous endeavours are impossible without the support of our donors. Thank you for being part of our creative family. Help make Australian theatre great by donating today. LIOR & BUCHEN TO COMPOSE FOR WORLD PREMIERE SEASON OF THE WIDER EARTH The highly anticipated world premiere of The Wider Earth just got a whole lot more exciting, with an original score from acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Lior, together with famed Sydney-based producer Tony Buchen, in a groundbreaking collaboration. Set to reframe the visual theatre experience, The Wider Earth stars over 30 custom-created puppets, eight actors and now two of Australia’s leading musical creators. With a bevy of astonishing puppets breathing life into creatures great and small – from the tiniest longhorn beetle to the majestic southern right whale and the ancient Galapagos tortoise – The Wider Earth reimagines the tale of scientific visionary Charles Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle. “And because of the nature of the story and the world we are creating, our collaboration with Lior and Buchen is absolutely and totally perfect. We will work with both of them to create an original score which will accompany the entire production, given the important role that music will play in supporting the visual storytelling of this production,” said David Morton from Dead Puppet Society, who penned The Wider Earth and will also direct and design. Lior is one of Australia’s most successful singersongwriters, renowned for his beautiful voice and songs that radiate with truth and sincerity. He is an ARIA award winner and eight time nominee including Best Male Artist, Triple J’s prestigious ‘J Award’ nomination for album of the year and Best Independent Release. This project represents his first foray into composition for theatre. Similarly, Sydney-based producer, mixer and songwriter Tony Buchen is sought after all around the world because of his immense talent. Most recently he has worked with emerging Australian artists The Preatures, Asta, Thelma Plum, Jeremy Neale and Montaigne, and is equally at home mixing the debut album for Californian mega choir The Silver Lake Chorus, providing string arrangements for US based duo The Falls, and collaborating on string quartet Fourplay’s latest project with acclaimed UK author Neil Gaiman.
“It’s a coming-of-age story about science and faith, and how one doubting young man with a questing heart set out to ask a question of Mother Nature, and found the answer to everything” David Morton

Presents Kenneth Branagh’s
The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live cinema season continues with a new vision of Shakespeare’s heartbreaking tale of forbidden love. Branagh and his creative team present a modern passionate version of the classic tragedy. A longstanding feud between Verona’s Montague and Capulet families brings about devastating consequences for two young lovers caught in the conflict. Reuniting the stars of his celebrated film of Cinderella, Kenneth Branagh directs Richard Madden and Lily James as Romeo and Juliet and Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio.
