A great season of theatre is like a great album. It is a series of unique experiences that form a meaningful whole and take you on a journey. The journey across our nine shows in 2017 is deliberately varied, but unified by our desire to share the very best with Brisbane. You can see urgent new Australian stories, the finest international plays, the hottest next generation of talent and the country’s most outstanding artists. In reverse, we’re also taking the best of Brisbane to the rest of the state and country. We will world premiere a show in Cairns, tour ten Queensland venues, take two shows to Melbourne, two to Sydney, one to Perth and another to Canberra. Queensland Theatre will have a national presence like never before. Each of the plays in Season 2017 achieves what theatre does best – puts with chaos in the workplace, enraptured in new romance, navigating the parent-child relationship, celebrating with family and wrestling with a failing marriage. Theatre is unique in its capacity to change how we feel – about ourselves, about our lives, about our universe. It can show us something we recognise innately, or something we could never have imagined. We have all been rendered speechless by an experience in the theatre. These are the sublime moments that keep us coming back. It’s what I hope for each time the lights go down, and what I strive for with every work I bring to the stage. It’s why I have the best job in the world.

human experience under the microscope. We can see ourselves reeling

You might have noticed an evolution in our name. This is more than just an abbreviation. It reflects our commitment to the health of the state’s whole creative culture. We aim to support it, enliven it and nurture it in any way we can. In short, we aim to lead from Queensland. I can’t wait to share my first season with you. Welcome to the next era of your Queensland Theatre. Sam

LADIES IN BLACK Book by Carolyn Burns, music and lyrics by Tim Finn Based on Madeleine St John’s novel, The Women in Black 28 January — 19 February

Queensland Theatre — 2017 Season

Playhouse, QPAC

Frock up and rock up. Step back through the doors of F.G. Goode’s department store and into a magical modern fairytale. The ladies in black are back for the summer sales. Sydney, the late 1950s: the city swelters in stuffy repression, longing for the cool, glorious liberation just around the corner. Bright-eyed, bookish school leaver Lisa takes a summer job in the most prestigious department store in town, and has no plans to become a housewife or secretary, despite what her father insists.

Among the racks and fitting rooms, she meets the exotic Magda and the ladies of the cocktail frocks department, who open this young ingénue’s eyes to a world of cosmopolitan possibilities. Fresh from touring the nation, don’t miss this return season of the Helpmann Award winning hit musical by Tim Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House) and director Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical; Love Never Dies; Dream Lover). THE FLICK by Annie Baker 10 February — 5 March Cremorne Theatre, QPAC

On a break from college, young film buff Avery takes a minimum-wage job as an usher at crumbling Massachusetts movie palace, The Flick. His thirty-something colleague Sam seems resigned to a dead-end life of sweeping up stale popcorn and his unrequited love for Rose, the achingly cool, free-spirited projectionist. As one late night blurs into another, and this trio of painfully ordinary people bond over movie trivia, low-level embezzling and shared ennui, the play evolves into a deeply moving, funny and delicate examination of the millions of tiny dramas that make up everyday life.

Queensland Theatre — 2017 Season

Spilled popcorn. Unspoken passions. Dusty projectors. Three unsung, underappreciated employees banter about life, love and longing.

The Flick, winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama has been the talk of New York and London. This year, Queensland Theatre breathes new life into the hit production by Melbourne ensemble Red Stitch, directed by the acclaimed Nadia Tass (Disgraced).

CONSTELLATIONS by Nick Payne 9 March — 9 April Bille Brown Studio, Queensland Theatre

How romantic, darling. Lovers often say fate brought them together, and fate doesn’t get much credit after that. But in Constellations, by hot young British playwright Nick Payne, every moment Roland and Marianne share is at the mercy of the infinite and unknowable universe.

Queensland Theatre — 2017 Season

So if everything we’ve ever done, and never done, has happened in alternate universes, that means there are universes in which we’ve never met. Universes where I married Prince Harry and you went to jail for tax fraud.

A beekeeper and a quantum physicist – the odds of them getting together are astronomical. But when their worlds do collide, they keep on colliding, as all the possibilities of their life together – good, bad and ugly – flicker across the stage in a series of intricately-structured snapshots, from first date to farewell. Sold-out seasons in New York and London – now it’s Queensland’s turn to be delighted and moved by this quirky and charming romance, directed by Kat Henry.

ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID’S CITY by Michael Gow 22 April — 14 May

Who are we, what are we doing here, and why is it so? Faced with the loss of a parent, do we rage against the universe, search for connection or hope for an epiphany? On the beaches of northern New South Wales, theatre director Will has planned to share a restful, halcyon Christmas with his recently-widowed mother. But then she falls ill. During a bedside vigil, Will is forced to piece together the splintered shards of his own life, questioning his role as an artist, as a son, as a citizen of the world.

Queensland Theatre and Melbourne Theatre Company present

NOISES OFF by Michael Frayn 3-25 June Playhouse, QPAC

A clumsy brunette bombshell; an addled actress as the dotty housekeeper; an alcoholic septuagenarian in the role of a burglar. It was never going to be easy staging a bedroom farce with a mediocre cast, but pompous director Lloyd Dallas is having a crack. You’ll cry with laughter and cringe with delight as you witness this company fray and fall apart. Onstage, it’s a whirl of slamming doors, missed cues, dropped lines and dropped trousers; backstage, it’s an even more confused and chaotic maelstrom of love triangles and trampled egos, and there’s no one without an axe to grind (or swing).

Queensland Theatre — 2017 Season

What’s more fun than a comically flawless story about tragically flawed people? Nothing.

Playwright Michael Frayn’s classic meta-farce has been running all over the world since its 1982 premiere. Now, Queensland Theatre’s Artistic Director Sam Strong masterfully marshals an ensemble of the country’s top comics for a wickedly funny night.

RICE by Michele Lee 24 June — 16 July Bille Brown Studio, Queensland Theatre

Working late, high up in a skyscraper, Nisha – at 28, a business prodigy and second-in-command of an Australian rice company – is closing a massive deal with the Indian government. Working later still is Yvette, who clears up her take-away.

Queensland Theatre — 2017 Season

Everyone has problems to deal with – in the boardroom or the basement, global or local, business or personal. Two multicultural women making their way in modern Australia forge a powerful, if unlikely, friendship that gets results.

“Indian princess” and “Chinese cleaner” is all they see when they face each other across the desk. They’re from different cultures, different generations – but as the nights wear on, they discover the many ties that bind them, and help each other navigate their complex lives. Brimming with sharp observations on globalisation, power, politics and migration as well as plenty of wicked humour, Rice won Michele Lee the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2016-2017, and will be directed by Griffin Theatre’s Helpmann Award winning director Lee Lewis.

“My grandfather used to tell me that technology will take over. We have to use it to our advantage. To teach language, to teach culture, to keep it alive. . . You have to go with the times.” — Jimi Bani Jimi Bani’s grandfather, the late Adhi Ephraim Bani Jr, was a linguist, genealogist, artist and the seventh recorded tribal chief of the Wagadagam. His eldest son, the late singer/songwriter Adhi Dimple Bani, was the eighth in line and first initiated chief. Jimi will be the ninth.

MY NAME IS JIMI Based on a story by Dimple Bani, Jimi Bani, and co-created with Jason Klarwein 10-15 July

Centre of Contemporary Arts, Cairns

22 July – 13 August Bille Brown Studio, Queensland Theatre

Mabuiag Island: a remote speck in the sparkling blue of the Torres Strait. Thousands of years of rich history and culture, with just a few hundred people keeping its flame. Now its favourite son is joking in three languages with his grandmother and torturing his son with spontaneous public break-dancing. Charismatic actor Jimi Bani (Mabo, The Straits, Redfern Now) whisks you away to his island for an evening of music, dance, stand-up and storytelling. Four generations of one family take the stage, as Jimi’s grandmother, mother, son and brothers help him spin yarns of totems, traditions and childhood memories. The islanders have lived through dark times and light, and this intimate show examines the challenges and tragedies they have faced with hope, honesty and humour, looking towards a bright tomorrow. My Name is Jimi is the story of a small community of people clinging tightly to each other, and fighting to protect what really matters, in the whirling chaos of a rapidly changing world.

“An Octoroon is a thrilling, moving exploration of personal and cultural identity, written with electric wires and staged with volcanic ferocity ... what you’re witnessing is the whole theatrical experience being explosively cracked wide open.” — Entertainment Weekly

Queensland Theatre and Brisbane Festival present

AN OCTOROON by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins 16 September – 8 October Bille Brown Studio, Queensland Theatre

Brash and provocative, the satirical comedy An Octoroon can trace its roots back to an 1856 novel, then a stage melodrama by crowd-pleasing Irish impresario Dion Boucicault. When the story of a man who scandalously falls for a slave on his Louisiana plantation premiered in New York in 1859, it helped fan the flame of the American Civil War. Today – with race still as incendiary a global issue as it was then – dazzling and radical African-American playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has torn apart and rebuilt the original text as a towering, immersive and wildly funny theatrical experience like no other.

Queensland Theatre — 2017 Season

It’s the story of historical Louisiana. Or historical Far North Queensland. Or it’s the story of a black playwright. Or how race is portrayed on stage. Or, maybe ... it’s about how they’re all the same story.

In a version subtly recontextualised to uncover and skewer Australia’s shameful history of slavery, leading Aboriginal artist and commentator Nakkiah Lui (Black Comedy) makes her directorial debut in a Queensland exclusive featuring Miranda Tapsell (The Sapphires, Love Child, Mabo), co-produced with Brisbane Festival.

SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE Adapted from the series by Ingmar Bergman by Joanna Murray-Smith 11 November – 3 December

Love blooms. Love fades. It happens to everyone. It could be happening next door. And in any marriage torn asunder, sifting through the wreckage is going to get messy. Even a seemingly perfect marriage has cracks in its facade: cracks that if untended, can become gaping rifts. Johan and Marianne are the ideal couple: two daughters, glittering careers, a lovely home.

Escape from reality

Date night

Theatre is more urgent, more immediate and more present than any other art form. Come and see contemporary society on stage, right here, right now.

For the dreamers and escapists, these plays are your ticket out of here. Forget everything for a couple of hours and soar off to undiscovered places, immerse yourself in the unknown, or surrender to fantasy.

There’s nothing more romantic than a show that warms your heart (and hopefully someone else’s). At these shows you’re sure to create some fond memories together.

… with your cultural knowledge, your extreme good taste and inspiring post showdiscussions. Here are plays about hot-button issues that’ll fire up a conversation and keep it burning into the wee hours.

There’s an old saying among comedians: “The more you drink, the funnier we get.” It holds true in the theatre, too. Here are some enormously funny plays that will go down well with a tipple before, during and after the show.

Some playwrights know exactly where to hit you. Exceptional theatre can make you care more deeply and feel more keenly. For these, bring the tissues, a hand to hold or a shoulder to cry on.

LEADING FROM QLD Touring Youth & Education New Work, New Artists Ways to Support

34

Putting together a fantastic season of plays is only part of what we do. We’re deeply invested in the health of our culture, so we consider the broad reach of our art and plan long-term the future of Australia’s theatre makers.

Queensland Theatre — 2017 Season

We aspire to lead the country from right here in our home state – by touring widely, introducing young people to the performing arts, developing new artists and stories and supporting Australia’s independent companies to create exceptional theatre. All of this vital work is impossible without your support. We couldn’t lead from Queensland without you.

New Work, New Artists

Queensland Theatre — 2017 Season

Australia’s most exciting artists make Queensland Theatre home, and we empower them to tell the stories that define us. This is how we build the future of theatre: leading in the creation of new works that become Australian classics. From playwrights and assistant directors to resident designers and Indigenous authors – we’re a creative hub for artists of all ages and disciplines. In 2017, for the first time, we are thrilled to introduce Queensland Theatre’s groundbreaking Independent Residency; bespoke resources to meet the needs of a group of Queensland’s independent artists.

Space + time + funding + mentorship = a healthy culture and exciting new work. For more information about artist development opportunities contact 07 3010 7600 or mail@queenslandtheatre.com.au “As a small company, our collaboration with QTC has meant that The Wider Earth is our most ambitious production to date both in terms of scale and complexity. Support and belief of the kind QTC have afforded us are incredibly rare, and it has meant the world to us to dream this story to life with them.” Nicholas Paine and David Morton, Dead Puppet Society

Over 100 independent artists will benefit from Queensland Theatre resources in 2017.
