ROBYN ARCHER:

AN AUSTRALIAN SONGBOOK

DEVISED AND PERFORMED BY ROBYN ARCHER

Robyn Archer

Name

Lee Lewis Artistic Director

It was a very hot summer’s afternoon when I travelled to Canberra to see Robyn Archer perform her show The (Other) Great American Songbook… in a tent.

Queensland Theatre acknowledges the Jagera and Turrbal people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, and their unique relationship with the lands, seas and waterways. We pay our respects to their Elders both past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Admittedly it was the Spiegeltent, so it sounded like it should be glamorous, but it was really hot and it was daytime and it was Canberra… but I went because I wanted to see if the woman who ran on the West End for a year with her show A Star Is Torn was still amazing. By the third song, the whole audience was singing along, transported to another time and place by not only Robyn’s powerful voice or the virtuosity of the musicians playing with her, but by the extraordinary mind that was speaking to us through song of great political ideas. A great desire grew in me to have that leading mind focus, finally, on Australia. I could wax lyrical on the breadth and depth of Robyn’s achievements as an artist and cultural leader, but that is what Google is for. What I would like to encourage, is the

commissioning of works from our legends. So much focus in theatre is on our emerging voices, which I absolutely understand, however the chance to ask our most experienced creators to speak of our world across time doesn’t happen often. It's only possible because the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund gave us the funding required to commission a new work from Robyn, and very generous donors Elizabeth Jameson AM and Dr Abbe Anderson supported a full year of its creative development. I cannot thank them enough for seeing the great need for our senior artists to speak, sing and tell stories of gathered wisdom. She has other shows about song in France, Germany and America but now we get to hear her perspective on the voice that is becoming Australian. What a gift for us all to enjoy. I would call this show one of the pandemic’s silver linings because when this was first commissioned, Robyn’s calendar was very full. Thanks to all the lockdowns, she has had far more time to think,

research and talk with her music collaborators than she would normally have given herself! This show is starting on the stage named for a great showman. It will travel around the country with Robyn in years to come and I hope it will thrill audiences with the complexity of thought for which she has always been celebrated. It will evolve and shift as she tinkers with the sounds and narrative, as the politics of the times change. I hope you will see it again in other cities and with other friends because it’s shows like this that are made to bring us all together. This night is a celebration of Australian talent, and I thank our Production Partner, Philip Bacon Galleries, for his support. It is a celebration of the artistry of one of our theatre visionaries. It is a privilege to have Robyn Archer on the Bille Brown stage in the world premiere of her new work. In a time when there hasn’t been a lot to celebrate, this is definitely a moment for a bucket of champagne! — Lee

25 JUN – 9 JUL BILLE BROWN THEATRE

DEVISED AND PERFORMED BY ROBYN ARCHER

Robyn Archer — Australian legend, industry pioneer and provocateur — has delighted audiences around the world with her powerhouse shows. Singing songs from the underground cabarets of the Weimar Republic, the salons of 19th century France and the folk clubs and Broadway stages of New York City, Robyn has conjured the works of Bertolt Brecht, Edith Piaf, Woody Guthrie and countless others. Now, she’s coming home. Robyn’s wealth of musical knowledge is distilled into a fearless, political and personal celebration of the way song has shaped Australian identity. It’s a melodic road trip through more than 150 years of ‘other’ Australian song, as Robyn explores the music of her upbringing and the countless rhythms and voices that are woven into the unique sonic fabric of this country. A trio of Australia’s finest musical artists join Robyn to transform the Bille Brown Theatre into a cabaret stage: piano accordion virtuoso George Butrumlis, actor and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Goodall of The Audreys on guitar, and composer Enio Pozzebon on keyboards.

“…there couldn’t be a more important time to bring to the surface the alternative voices which have existed in Australian song for centuries.” Robyn Archer Devisor/Performer

The idea for An Australian Songbook arose when George Butrumlis, Michael Morley and I performed our three different cabaret programs at Griffin Theatre when Lee Lewis was Artistic Director of the company. We had a French program (1880s–1960s), a German program (1919–1933), and concluded with The (Other) Great American Songbook (songs from the Civil War through to Pink). Lee asked whether I’d ever consider doing something similar with Australian songs. We didn’t get to do it at Griffin — and now here we are at Queensland Theatre.

“Getting my head round the idea of an all-Australian program was the greatest challenge.”

In my mind it was never going to be a predictable list of greatest hits, but rather an alternative list, mainly of songs that audiences might never had been aware of or had forgotten. It would not be swamped with love songs or jingoistic anthems and clichés, but hopefully would trace in song the kind of history that doesn’t get so much airplay. I started researching, looking again at some of my own songs, seeking permissions from living composers, and then going through the lengthy instinctive process of giving the concert some shape and sense of a journey. Naturally, every song had to be one that I would enjoy singing, and the next step was to think about which musicians would come on the journey with me. George, Cameron, Enio and I had all worked together on the show I devised and directed — The Sound of Falling Stars — and as we were keen to work together again, I decided that this

might make the perfect quartet for An Australian Songbook. Given my intention was, in sync with my own wide-ranging and often eclectic tastes, to cover many musical genres — folk, art song, musical theatre, singer-songwriter, country and (almost) rock — I knew these three remarkable musicians would find creative ways to cover the lot.

enjoyed coming up with other ways to create the necessary musical highs and lows. This became even more enjoyable when Enio and Cameron joined us for the last four weeks of rehearsal. With an additional two highly versatile musicians, the fun really began, and only then did the program start to take its current shape.

During 2021’s Melbourne lockdowns and then the productions postponement, George and I worked remotely and squeezed in a couple of face-to-face rehearsals when the rules allowed more than 25km travel and permitted a homestudio visit. George started to do basic charts and we discussed possible arrangements. Given that none of our performances are cover versions, never attempting slavishly to copy the original, we

I hope you enjoy the program as much as we have enjoyed putting it together; that in amongst the odd song you do know, you will encounter things you’ve not heard before, and come away with a renewed admiration for the way in which Australian songwriters have preserved so much of our past. May they continue to do so! And Lee, thanks for the challenge. — Robyn

Philip Bacon Galleries is delighted to be sponsoring Queensland Theatre’s Robyn Archer: An Australian Songbook. The term ‘national treasure’ has the potential to be an overused one, in the case of Robyn Archer, it is completely apt, she is what we want in all our artists — a true original. Robyn’s brilliance as a singer is only highlighted by her ability to tell a story through the songbook she curates for her cabarets, I know she will not disappoint.

My gallery has an interesting exhibition calendar for the second half of 2022 planned, with exhibitions by Cressida Campbell, Tim Storrier, Michael Zavros and Nicholas Harding to come. I am delighted to be associated with Queensland Theatre and I hope that like it, Philip Bacon Galleries will continue to bring stimulating and challenging art to all Queenslanders. I wish you a great night at the theatre. — Philip Bacon
