WELCO M E NOTE Artistic Director

SAM STRONG Dear Friends, On occasion, real events collide to create a story that we usually associate with the most talented dramatists. The life of Father Peter Kennedy and his congregation at St Mary’s Catholic Church is one such series of events. I probably don’t need to remind anyone that the church in question is located just 300 metres from this very theatre, and was once host to one of the most diverse inner-city church communities in the country. The conflict between Father Peter Kennedy and the institution of the Catholic Church is as epic and complex as any historical religious upheaval, and it happened here, making it the perfect choice for QTC’s contribution to Brisbane Festival. It’s also the perfect choice for a company committed to telling urgent, new and local stories that unapologetically reflect our society back to itself. David Burton’s play establishes its own genre of the spiritual thriller, exploring themes of faith, diversity, leadership and identity. Who are we without the institutions and labels we use to define us? What happens when the community that once embraced us fragments? In these moments of loss and solitude, where can faith or hope or even God be found? These are large and important questions, and I’m glad David Burton’s text doesn’t shy away from them. He and the team have taken on the daunting task of creating a work inspired by true events. This is difficult enough when the events are long past. It becomes an even greater challenge when the story’s characters are still with us. But this also presents an opportunity. Peter Kennedy and other members of his congregation have been generous with their time and, more importantly, their personal lives in helping us craft this piece. It is by no means a factual blow-by-blow of the true events, but I believe David, Director Jason Klarwein and the cast have remained equally faithful to the spirit of the events and the demands of a memorable night in the theatre.

Peter Marshall

This work serves as a reminder that there are extraordinary things happening around us every day, and remarkable people attempting to meet struggles quietly behind closed doors. It is part of QTC’s mission to bring these stories to the stage and give audiences a chance to reflect on their meaning. In a time when divisions of race, religion and politics are too often exploited, the unity, tolerance and openness reflected in this story are a rare tonic for a heavy heart. See you in the stalls (or pews). Sam L-R: Kevin Spink, Peter Marshall.

M ESSAGE FRO M O UR SPO NSO R Director, Philip Bacon Galleries

PHILIP BACON Philip Bacon Galleries is excited to be able to sponsor the Queensland Theatre Company’s production of St Mary’s in Exile. It is wonderful to be involved with the production of a play written by a local writer dealing with a fascinating local story. The gallery has had a stimulating year so far with exhibitions by such luminaries of the art world as Robert Dickerson, Jeffrey Smart and Margaret Olley. However we are equally thrilled to be showing major contemporary painters such

as Brisbane’s own Ralph Wilson this month and Michael Zavros in November. Just like Queensland Theatre Company, Philip Bacon Galleries hopes in our own way to bring interesting, relevant and thought provoking artistic experiences to the people of Brisbane and the rest of our state. I wish you a great night at the theatre.

WR ITER 'S NOTE Playwright

DAVID BURTON

I came to St Mary’s as many others did: a stickybeaking lapsed Catholic. I visited the church just once, at the height of its controversy, in 2009. What I encountered was a refreshing, relevant and resonant interpretation of a Catholic mass. It addressed, very directly, so many aspects of Catholicism that had alienated me, my peers, and Christians around the world. Any traces of theological coldness had melted into homilies and prayers that were intimate and heartfelt. There was an atmosphere of gentle protest, and incredible vulnerability. So when I began a lengthy research process to transfer the story to theatre, I was expecting to write a story of rough and tumble spiritual underdogs against an inflexible empire. A modern day David and Goliath fable. I encountered something far more complex. I sat for many hours with the real Terry and Peter, their congregation (past and present), the current Archbishop of the Brisbane diocese, and others. Each person told the story of St Mary’s In Exile differently. But each were united

in their very human search for meaning. Behind the hierarchical titles of ‘priest’, ‘bishop’, or ‘congregant’ were people looking for validation, solace, intellectual stimulation, unity and hope. The story of St Mary’s poses big questions for the institutions of the 21st century, religious or otherwise. How are we able to maintain traditions, acknowledging the past, but also maintain relevance to the present? Is any institution capable of truly comprehensive inclusivity? Is a belief meaningful if it doesn’t have practical application? And of course, what happens to a young person when you take away their capacity to feel romantic love, and tell them they have powers beyond an ordinary human? It’s been a privilege to write this show, and to work so closely with the St Mary’s In Exile community. They live on, still gathering every weekend at the TLC Building on Peel Street. MICAH Projects continues to do amazing work for social justice (www.micahprojects.org.au). My heartfelt thanks to the community for their trust and generosity.

JASON KLARWEIN

The page on which you read this is not large enough to cover the depth and breadth of the play you are about to watch. However, I can assure you, this means you are about to witness a thrilling piece of theatre. David Burton’s rigorous and enlightening work is not only about one of the largest schisms in the modern history of the Catholic Church, it also happened just one block from the seat in which you are sitting. In 2009, almost 1,000 people exited the building called St Mary’s and crossed a road called Hope Street to take up a new spiritual and physical life in the Trades and Labour Council Building on Peel Street. This brave group of people hungered not only for an expansion of their own spiritual needs, they also hungered for a more inclusive definition of what it means to be human. This is what separates this play from being just a local story told by local people. Yes, some of the events you see before you are truthful. And yes, some is fiction. But what you are looking at is an example of the amazing strength and belief that manifests when people collectively unite. Our society is increasingly focused on the individual, no matter what ‘social’ media tells you. Congregationalism, the leadership of the many as opposed to the leadership of the few, is really the issue at the heart of this story. It doesn't

matter whether the institution in question is the Catholic Church, the government of a country, or a corporation. The collective nature of the people with a will for change, is an unstoppable force. It cannot be contained by rules or denial. The need for groups of people to unite and strengthen their identity though their own vulnerability towards empowerment is and can be liberating and euphoric. On one hand, you may think this story is David and Goliath, but if you look closer it's more like 1 Corinthians 13:13 Faith, Hope and Love. Acceptance and compassion - no matter what your religion, faith, belief, sexuality, country, gender, ethnicity - is what separates the human in us from the animal, the beast. This is also a story of the individual and mortality. The ebb and flow of our changing and shifting identity as we move closer to death. What is important? What is family? What is love? What is now? The etymology of the word ‘catholic’ is from the Greek ‘Kata-Holos’ which means: ‘in respect of-the whole’. And in turn, the Greek word ‘Katholikos’ means ‘universal’. What you are about to see is ‘universal’. Which is why it makes good theatre.

DESI GN I N G ST MARY'S I N EXI LE Designer

ANTHONY SPINAZE St Mary’s in Exile is based on real people, real events and real places. When initially discussing the play, the biggest decision Jason and I had to make was – should the set design draw on the real church, which is such a central part of the story? Although the church is iconic, in the end we decided to move away from the architecture of the actual building. This is a story about people, about faith and about religion – universal themes with a powerful personal impact - so we didn't want anything too grand in the set that would detract from the story. And because the parish of St Mary’s was more about the community and less about the building itself, we wanted that to carry through with the design. To create a spiritual space that could convey the universality of the story I researched many beautiful modern churches. One recurring feature was concrete textures contrasted with natural wood - we fell in love with this idea. The work of Tadao Ando, a Japanese architect was a big inspiration. There was a cleanness and

Costume design sketches

a simplicity to his designs which is the perfect backdrop to this piece. Because people were the heart of the St Mary’s community it was important that the vibrant and diverse community of parishioners be the centre of this design. I used the costume designs to bring this community to life – although the garments are simple everyday items, the bright colours of the costumes stand out against the set and make clear that this congregation is the most important part of the church. I’m proud to work on a local production that has such a universal theme. The story is set in South Brisbane, the playwright David Burton - who has created this evocative script with such believable human characters - is originally from Toowoomba. The entire creative team are local, as are most of the cast and crew. It’s wonderful that our production showcases Queensland talent, showing that new local work can make an important contribution to big national debates about issues that matter to so many people.

Fr Peter Kennedy is appointed Administrator of St Mary’s. In the years following Fr Terry Fitzpatrick becomes a regular associate at the church.

Archbishop John Bathersby writes a letter to Peter and the community outlining his main concerns with their practice, warning they are currently operating outside of communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

The community receives another letter of concern from the Archbishop, who threatens the beginning of a ‘formal process’ if the issues aren’t resolved to the Church’s satisfaction.

6th February, 2009

St Mary’s liturgies are modified in an attempt to appease the Archbishop.

Archbishop Bathersby issues a letter saying he will terminate Peter Kennedy’s role at St Mary’s unless he resigns beforehand.

6th July, 2008 Fr Terry Fitzpatrick receives a complaint about a statue inside the church, which some interpret as Buddhist. The following day, without explanation, the statue is gone.

19th March, 2009

Fr Peter Kennedy and Fr Terry Fitzpatrick give their final service at St Mary’s South Brisbane, and walk down the road to the Trades and Labour Council building, taking their congregation of several hundred with them.

ABOUT ST MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH St Mary’s Catholic Church, located 20 Merivale Street, South Brisbane, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is under the care of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars. The church was blessed and opened by the second Archbishop of Brisbane, Archbishop Dunne, on the 2 July 1893. The building we see today replaces the original St Mary’s, which was a modest, wooden chapel first constructed circa 1864 on the current site of the car park. South Brisbane’s population experienced a rapid increase in the 1880s, which prompted a meeting in August 1889 to discuss the construction of a larger church to meet the needs of the expanding population. Fundraising for a new church with the capacity to seat 800 people commenced the next year. The Italianate and Romanesque revival structure was designed by George Simkim and John Ibler, who most notably designed the Breakfast

Creek Hotel as well as many Catholic church commissions. The foundation stone was laid by Cardinal Moran on 25 September 1892 and by the building’s completion the following year, it had cost £2150 in total to construct. A significant portion of funds were raised by the community, despite the devastating floods of 1893. The most notable addition to the church was the completion of the sanctuary, vestry and sacristy in December 1929, which was ornately designed by Cavanaugh Architects and officially opened by the third Archbishop of Brisbane, James Duhig. St Mary’s was State Heritage listed in 2004 and efforts continue today to preserve and restore this architectural gem and treasured gathering place for the local Catholic community. The current Parish Priest is Father Lam Vu.

WELCOME TO THE BILLE BROWN STUDIO To ensure that patrons enjoy the performance, management asks you to note: • Cameras, tape recorders and paging devices should not be used inside the auditorium. • Switch off alarms and mobile phones prior to the performance. • A single cough measures approximately 65 decibels of sound. The use of a handkerchief helps greatly to soften the sound. The management reserves the right to refuse admission, also to make any alterations to the cast which may be rendered necessary by illness or other unavoidable causes. Patrons are advised that the Bille Brown Studio has EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES, a FIRE ALARM system and EXIT passageways. In case of an alert, patrons should remain calm, look for the closest EXIT sign in GREEN, listen to and comply with directions given by the inhouse trained attendants and move in an orderly fashion to outside the Studio.
